Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired North American distribution rights to Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill, a documentary about the gifted singer-songwriter who was equal parts talented and tortured.
The film directed by Andy Brown and Brian Lindstrom (Alien Boy: The Life & Death of James Chasse) premiered at Doc NYC in 2022. Greenwich plans to release Lost Angel in theaters on April 12. Watch the trailer below.
“An intimate portrait of a one-of-a-kind singer-songwriter from 1970s Los Angeles, the documentary charts the life of Judee Sill from a troubled adolescence that included armed robbery and prison through her meteoric rise in the music world and tragic early death,” notes a description of the documentary. “In just over two years, Judee went from living in a car to a deal with Asylum Records and the cover of Rolling Stone. Writers of nine limited series ranging from “A Murder at the End of the World” to “Tiny Beautiful Things” traded shop talk and stories of how they crafted muscular worlds to tell extended, standalone stories.
Ed Solomon of Max’s “Full Circle” astounded the crowd at Variety’s A Night in the Writers Room at Hollywood’s NeueHouse with the origin story of his 586-page spec script for the twisty thriller. “And then Steven [Soderbergh] decided to direct it and that led it to be great.”
Andy Breckman, of Peacock’s “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie,” explained to moderator Jazz Tangcay, Variety’s senior artisans editor, how he had to pad the original 2002 pilot for the detective franchise into a USA Network TV movie – because star Tony Shalhoub was contractually prohibited against starring in a competing pilot. “I had to fatten up the animal and get it to 90 minutes...

Longtime lit agent and manager Shari Smiley has died. Smiley passed away Tuesday at age 53. Cause of death is not yet known.
Smiley had a long career in book to movie circles, and most recently had restarted her Smiley Management banner. Before that she had been at 3 Arts, this after a four year stint at The Gotham Group. There, she sold the dramatic rights to several titles, notably In A Dark, Dark Wood, The Barbizon and An Anonymous Girl, all of which resulted in bidding wars. Smiley had also been a consultant for the executor of the J.R.R. Tolkien Estate.
Smiley spent the bulk of her career, 18 years worth, at CAA, where she began as a receptionist in 1993 and was soon selling more books there than some of the tenured agents. When she left that agency, she called legendary literary agent Mort Janklow to tell him, and Janklow...

Reese Witherspoon and her Hello Sunshine media company hosted its inaugural Shine Away event Saturday, featuring a number of conversations with Witherspoon’s A-list friends and collaborators.
The event, held in downtown Los Angeles, welcomed hundreds of ticketed guests to hear from participants including Jennifer Garner, Mindy Kaling, Tracee Ellis Ross, Allyson Felix, The Home Edit’s Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin, Eve Rodsky, Hannah Bronfman, Cheryl Strayed and an afternoon performance by Dove Cameron.
Fortune Feimster kicked off the day with a short stand-up set, followed by Witherspoon taking the stage to discuss her journey to launching Hello Sunshine in 2016. She recalled how few women-centered stories she was seeing at the time, despite women consuming two to three times more media than men.
“After I did a whole lot of soul searching and a lot of complaining to anyone who would listen, namely my mother, I realized what so...

Within the past four years alone, the success rate for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress Emmy nominees who have entered their ceremonies with same-year SAG Award wins under their belts has dropped from 100% to 60%. After being followed by Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”) in 2021, win-lose trendsetter Patricia Arquette might soon be joined by 2023 SAG Award recipient Jessica Chastain (“George & Tammy”), whose Gold Derby Emmy odds are significantly lower than those of her strongest challenger, Ali Wong (“Beef”).
Chastain and Wong represent half of their Emmy lineup’s first-time acting nominee majority, which also includes Dominique Fishback (“Swarm”) and Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones & the Six”). Rounding out the group, which features no former Emmy champions, are category newcomers Lizzy Caplan (“Fleishman is in Trouble”) and Kathryn Hahn (“Tiny Beautiful Things”).
In order to determine the likelihood of Chastain perpetuating said unfortunate trend, let’s take a closer look at each nominee.

This story about Hulu’s “Tiny Beautiful Things” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine and was conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The messiness of her Emmy-nominated role of Clare Pierce was part of what attracted Kathryn Hahn to “Tiny Beautiful Things,” the eight-episode drama series that was adapted from Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 novel based on her own experiences taking over an anonymous advice column in a literary magazine.
The series, created by Liz Tigelaar for ABC Signature, Hulu and Hello Sunshine, braids together Clare’s adult, teenage and childhood timelines, sketching a portrait of a woman in her 40s who is at loose ends after a painful divorce, but also flashing back to her younger self abandoning her dreams of becoming a writer in the aftermath of a traumatic childhood and the loss of her mother to cancer.

Kathryn Hahn excels at playing women without boundaries. From the moment in “Step Brothers” that she mounted John C. Reilly in the men’s room and then proceeded to urinate standing up, Hahn won our hearts playing characters who speak their unfiltered minds — and performed an impressive amount of gymnastic sex scenes in the process. She’s been brazen, promiscuous, violent and drunk — and audiences have loved every moment of it. She even got away with the worst thing a character can do — killing a dog — in “WandaVision.”
“You really hope those scenes are early on,” says Hahn about overcoming inhibitions. She points to a moment in Tamara Jenkins’ “Private Lives” in which her character is cleaning her home while naked from the waist down. She then gets in a heated argument with her husband, played by Paul Giamatti. “I was very glad that we got that over with before...

Over a month after securing a bevy of Emmy nominations for Prime Video’s “Daisy Jones & the Six” and Hulu’s “Tiny Beautiful Things,” Hello Sunshine president of film and TV was still “exploding with joy.”
Neustadter sat down with TheWrap over Zoom, fresh from the news of Stevie Nicks’ Instagram post praising the TV adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s best-selling book “Daisy Jones & the Six,” which took inspiration from the relationships between the members of Fleetwood Mac. The warts-and-all series chronicles the rise and fall of a ‘70s rock band and the legacy their music left behind, and received nine Emmy nominations including acting nods for Riley Keough and Camila Morrone in addition to a Best Limited Series nomination.

In Hulu’s Tiny Beautiful Things, Kathryn Hahn plays Clare, a reimagined version of Cheryl Strayed from Strayed’s memoir of the same name. Working on the story, which examines grief and family close-up, has left Hahn “forever changed” she said on Tuesday morning, shortly after receiving an Emmy nomination for her role.
However, as SAG-AFTRA talks continue, with a possible actors’ strike on the horizon in addition to the ongoing writers’ strike, Hahn said, “Everything feels very bittersweet, doesn’t it?” She recalled her love for the writers’ room on Tiny Beautiful Things and writer-EPs Liz Tigelaar and Cheryl Strayed, adding, “You know, no matter what, we’re all 100 percent behind the writers, and I am filled with gratitude. And we’ll continue to shout their names since they are unable to for a bit.”

The honest answer for why Hello Sunshine had such a prolific TV season is the pandemic.
“The timing has a lot to do with Covid because there was this moment where everything was quiet, but we were still working, so we were driving all these different things forward,” said Lauren Levy Neustadter, President of Film & TV of the media company co-founded by actress and mogul Reese Witherspoon. “When it was safe to go back and shoot, we had all of these shows that started production, and they all came together in a very similar window.”
Now the company has entered the 2023 Emmys season with not only one Television Movie contender and two Drama Series submissions but a whopping four Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series entrants — even more than some major networks. “From Scratch” (Netflix), “Daisy Jones and the Six” (Prime Video), “Tiny Beautiful Things” (Hulu), and “The Last Thing He Told Me...

Daniel Fienberg: It’s hard to tell the story of Spring TV in 2023 without discussing HBO’s Succession and Barry, as well as Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso. Those three shows, two definitely finished and one seemingly coming to an end, represented four of the last six Emmy wins for outstanding drama and comedy series, as well as many nominations for acting, writing and directing. With their shocking deaths, wild deviations in tone and, in the case of Ted Lasso, expanded episode running times, they’ve dominated social media and water cooler conversations since March.
That’s why we’re not going to focus on them here. There’s more to TV than Barry, Succession and Ted Lasso — or at least HBO and Apple hope there is after the upcoming awards season concludes.
Even not counting the holy trinity of the spring, there were buzzy returning shows — Fxx’s Dave!

The level of solidarity among striking WGA writers has been a powerful force during these first few weeks of the writers strike. Seeing it in action on picket lines is a good reminder for the industry at large that there’s a special camaraderie among those who know what it’s like to stare at a blank screen, search for inspiration and then type away at draft after draft to get the words just right.
That’s true for novelists as much as it is for screenwriters. Often those are one and the same — and because we live in an age where pre-sold IP usually makes it easier to sell a TV project, there have never been more series based on books than there are right now.
I don’t have the numbers to back me up on that, but we’re still living in peak TV times. Which means...

Comedy is tragedy plus time, as the saying goes — and in TV comedies, timing is everything. Historically, the TV Academy has considered a comedy to be a half-hour of television. But this season, several shows are blurring the lines between comedy and drama in both tone and episode length — which may impact their chances in the Emmy race.
Take, for example, Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, which picked up the prize for best comedy series for its first two seasons and is aiming for a third nom this summer. The feel-good series about a scrappy English soccer — excuse me, football — team first found a rabid fan base during the pandemic with its positive messages of collaboration and communication, themes presented via the eponymous coach played by co-creator Jason Sudeikis (who has received two Emmys for his performance). But what began as a 30-minute series has evolved into a slightly different animal,...

The 2023 Atx TV Festival is hosting an unprecedented Writers Strike Conversation in support of the ongoing WGA strike.
The strike, which formally began May 2, has led to the shut down of multiple productions in solidarity with the demonstrations. The Atx TV Festival has pivoted accordingly to announce the scrapping of certain programming with writers and showrunners unable to attend under strike guidelines. However, the festival has added a WGA on Strike! program with select WGA East and West members to address the ongoing concerns.
The Atx TV Festival announced an added conversation with some of TV’s leading writers discussing the current WGA Writers Strike. The panelists will discuss first-hand the issues at stake, the changes they’re fighting for, and why the strike is necessary to safeguard the future of not just writers, but all entertainment unions and creatives, per an official press release.

“If it’s fueled by love and fueled by something good, then it’s harder to write off as a mistake or a misstep,” declares Sarah Pidgeon about how she interprets one of the last lines in the Hulu limited series “Tiny Beautiful Things,” in which series star Kathryn Hahn says “the best thing you can do with your life is tackle the mother-f****** s*** out of love.” For our recent webchat she adds, “I’m in my mid-twenties right now and it feels like there’s so much coming at you and everything’s feels so precious and each decision I make is do or die, and I think that can sometimes lead me to a place that can arrest you in a way. I think this idea that the series leaves you in is that moment of moving towards the things that are good, the people that love you,...

Sarah Pidgeon had a major task when it came to Hulu's "Tiny Beautiful Things." The actor, who previously starred in Amazon Prime Video's "The Wilds," plays Clare, a college student dealing with the sudden loss of her mom. Kathryn Hahn also inhabits the character - an older version of Clare, who is dealing with that trauma from her youth and trying to move forward for her own family. They're joined by Merrit Wever as Frankie, Clare's mom. Pidgeon tells Popsugar, "I'm still pinching myself" about working with such great actors. "I feel really, really grateful that I was able to have my name even close to those people on a credits list."
She admits she was "really nervous," but the veteran actors were "so comforting and kind." Before filming began, she says, "[Hahn and I] had worked together, with really the whole main cast, sort of figuring out what...

“To have two shows that I’m actually a part of,” sighs Quentin Plair in our recent webchat, adding that “it’s really been kind of this really eye-opening and a beautiful and validating process that is still going on right now.” Plair is having a real moment this season, co-starring in not one, but two acclaimed roles in two very different but equally high-profile series — playing an exotic dancer in the glitzy and tawdry semi-autobiographical “Welcome to Chippendales” and an emotionally numb father and husband in the intimate comedy/drama “Tiny Beautiful Things,” both streaming on Hulu. You may not readily group Cheryl Strayed with Elizabeth II, Elvis Presley or Annie Wilkes, but the self-help author could soon have at least one thing in common with them. If Kathryn Hahn (“Tiny Beautiful Things”) receives an Emmy nomination for playing a version of the role that nabbed Reese Witherspoon (“Wild”) an Oscar bid in 2015, Strayed will join that list of real and fictional personas whose depictions have garnered multiple actors awards recognition across media.
Two-time Emmy winner Merritt Wever could also crash the Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress race for playing Strayed’s mother, a role that earned Laura Dern her second Oscar nomination. According to Gold Derby’s Emmy odds, the two are safer bets than the show itself, which has yet to crack the Limited Series top 10.

Now that “Tiny Beautiful Things” is streaming on Hulu, the Kathryn Hahn hive can look forward to seeing the actress in the Marvel Cinematic Universe again in the upcoming TV show “Agatha: Coven of Chaos.”
The new Disney+ series is a spin-off of Marvel Studios’ first TV show, “WandaVision.” That series starred Elizabeth Olsen and told more of Wanda’s backstory as she wove together a complex web of magic in the fake town of Westview, New Jersey to cope with her intense grief of losing Vision (Paul Bettany). Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) was introduced in Westview as Agnes, Wanda’s friendly neighbor, but by the end of the season, we discovered Agnes was actually a powerful witch who wanted Wanda to attain her full power potential (it was Agatha all along).

This week’s guest is Cheryl Strayed.
We dig deep into the author and advice columnist’s thoughts on love, life and creativity, plus there’s some juicy intel on her involvement in a new Janis Joplin project. Add to that, she reveals the best and worst advice her grandmother ever gave her, her best memories and her worst fears.
Back in 2012, Strayed published her memoir Wild, which then became an Oscar-nominated film starring Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern. Now all three have banded together as EPs, with showrunner Liz Tigerlaar (Little fires Everywhere), to adapt Strayed’s book Tiny Beautiful Things into a Hulu series.

People often imagine which actor they'd like to see play them in a movie or TV show about their life, but author Cheryl Strayed is the rare person who had that happen to her, twice. In the 2014 movie "Wild," based on her best-selling memoir, Reese Witherspoon plays her as she dares to hike the Pacific Coast Trail alone. And in Hulu's new series "Tiny Beautiful Things," based on Strayed's best-selling book of advice columns, Kathryn Hahn and Sarah Pidgeon team up to play a fictionalized version of Strayed named Clare.
Something else that connects "Wild" and "Tiny Beautiful Things" is that they were produced by Witherspoon. "Wild" came to be through Witherspoon's old production company, Type A Films, while "Tiny Beautiful Things" is one of many her Hello Sunshine projects. Strayed, talking to Popsugar, praises Witherspoon for one of "the women in Hollywood who have really blazed a trail.

Strayed said Saturday at the Deadline’s Contenders Television awards-season event that the trio ended up becoming “very dear friends” adding that their work is something that she “deeply admired” and women who she could trust would honor her memoir.
Executive producer Liz Tigelaar said that she had been a fan of Strayed’s work and when she was approached by Witherspoon’s producing partner Lauren Neustadter about the adaptation she immediately said, “Yes, I’m in! And then, I was like, ‘I have no idea, how do you adapt advice columns?'”

Cheryl Strayed’s “Tiny Beautiful Things” was the opposite of an obvious adaptation.
Composed of advice columns addressed to relationship aficionado, Sugar — an alias that Strayed took on through literary magazine “The Rumpus” — the Hulu adaptation weaves three timelines together of the life of Clare Pierce (played by Kathryn Hahn). Creatives across Hulu, ABC Signature and Hello Sunshine put their heads together to weave the letters and details of Strayed’s life into a reimagined version of Strayed who hadn’t hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, allowing Tigelaar to create what she calls one of her beloved “Little Families.” Tigelaar encouraged the team to think beyond the typical TV formula.
“With most pilots… by the end of the pilot, [Clare] has to unequivocally decide she is taking on this advice column… that’s ingrained in me from a storytelling perspective,” showrunner Liz Tigelaar told TheWrap. “It was really important to me...

“Tiny Beautiful Things” showrunner Liz Tigelaar and author Cheryl Strayed designed the show’s central character Clare (Kathryn Hahn) based on the question: what would it have looked like if Strayed hadn’t hiked the Pacific Crest Trail.
Clare’s life mirrors Strayed’s before she became a well-known writer, taking on the mantle of an anonymous advice column called “Dear Sugar” from an old colleague in “Tiny Beautiful Things,” just as Strayed did in real life for the online literary magazine “The Rumpus” in 2010. The Hulu adaptation comes from Hello Sunshine, the production company of Reese Witherspoon, who portrayed the version of Strayed that did make the 1,100-mile solo hike in “Wild” based on Strayed’s 2012 memoir.
“We have this narrative of this adult character who isn’t me, but then that young character very much acts out many of the most painful, powerful, beautiful, true scenes from my own life.

Hulu's "Tiny Beautiful Things," which premiered April 7 on the streamer, follows Kathryn Hahn as Clare, a struggling middle-aged woman who reconnects with her love of writing as her marriage and family fall apart. The new series, which also features "The Wilds"'s Sarah Pidgeon as the younger version of Clare, Quentin Plair as her husband Danny, and Tanzyn Crawford as her daughter Rae, is based on the book of advice columns by Cheryl Strayed. Back in the 2010s, Strayed anonymously wrote the "Dear Sugar" advice column for the website The Rumpus, doling out wisdom that was eventually collected in the book "Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar." And while Strayed sought to help those who chose to write in, she also pulled from the story of her own life. In the show, Clare becomes Sugar, trying to help others while her life is also falling apart.

Tiny Beautiful Things may end with a moment of closure, as Kathryn Hahn's Clare stares down her grief and says a proper goodbye to her late mother (Merritt Wever), but the Hulu adaptation by no means ties up its stories with a neat bow. Various narrative threads are left dangling as the eight-episode limited series concludes, including Clare's failing marriage to Danny (Quentin Plair) and her decision to turn her Dear Sugar advice column into a full-time job. But while creator Liz Tigelaar has left room for exploration, it would do a disservice to the show, and Cheryl Strayed's essay collection that inspired it, to renew Tiny Beautiful Things for Season 2.

Just like the entire series, the ending of “Tiny Beautiful Things” — adapted from Cheryl Strayed’s best-selling book — is messy.
The eight episodes follow Clare Pierce (Kathryn Hahn) as she starts writing for an anonymous advice column called Dear Sugar, while her own shifting personal life both fuels her responses and brings up other emotions. Clare attends marriage counseling with her husband, Danny Kinkade (Quentin Plair), as the two are not seeing eye to eye in their marriage. At the end of the series, Danny shows Clare a letter that she wrote as Dear Sugar that encouraged the advice seeker to “just go” and let go of something if they knew deep down that it was time.
“Danny has to re-find himself. He has to re-find the man he was that attracted Clare in the first place,” Plair told TheWrap. “I don’t think until he can do the work on himself,...

In Tiny Beautiful Things, some of the most powerful dialogue happens in voiceover. Kathryn Hahn’s meditations open and close most every episode, ranging in sentiment from anguished (the very first establishing shot of the series is accompanied by her character Clare Pierce’s desperate letter to the advice column Dear Sugar) to sanguine (by the final scene of the pilot, she’s dispensing advice to her 22-year-old self as Sugar). “What would I tell my 22-year-old self?” she asks. “Stop worrying whether you’re fat — feed yourself, literally. The people worthy of your love will love you more for this.”
Fitting the haphazard nature of her character, these voiceovers — that see Hahn’s character navigating her own painful divorce and grappling with all of her professional dreams deferred while attempting to pay it forward — were done in Hahn’s makeup trailer during whatever downtime they could find on set.

In preparation for her latest production, “Tiny Beautiful Things,” costume designer Alana Morshead “stalked every book [Cheryl Strayed] wrote and everything [she] ever said, and put it into this show.”
Hulu’s newest limited series “Tiny Beautiful Things” released all eight episodes on April 8, and is based on Strayed’s best-selling collection of her “Dear Sugar” advice column, “Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar.” Kathryn Hahn stars as Clare, a mother and wife whose world begins to crumble — just in time for her to become an advice columnist.
Morshead immersed herself in the author’s previous work, diving into “Wild” and “Brave Enough,” in an effort to bring Strayed’s story to life through costuming nods and references to the author’s personal history. “It’s such a personal story,” Morshead told Variety. “I just wanted everything that Cheryl told me to be in the show.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from “Love,” the finale of the limited series “Tiny Beautiful Things,” now streaming on Hulu.
Hulu’s “Tiny Beautiful Things” ends on a serene note, with a hospital bed in the middle of a horse pasture and a single spoken word: “love.”
The moment is one of the few shared between Kathryn Hahn and Merritt Wever in the limited series, which is based on author Cheryl Strayed’s life and her time writing an advice column called “Dear Sugar.”
Wever plays Frankie, the free-spirited mother of Hahn’s character Clare, who (like Strayed’s mother) dies suddenly of lung cancer at the age of 45. Kathryn Hahn hadn’t read Cheryl Strayed’s book “Tiny Beautiful Things” before signing on to the Hulu limited series. But she knew from the moment she got to know the lead character that she wanted the role.
Clare is a writer whose life is in shambles — her marriage isn’t in a good place, she’s still grieving the death of her mother and she’s struggling to connect with her teenage daughter. When a former colleague offers her to be come Sugar, a popular, anonymous advice columnist, she reluctantly takes a chance.
“Clare doesn’t know all the answers and is a work in progress herself, like we all are. It’s through her shame, and grief and depths of self unworthiness, she finds this shockingly awake and honest voice that she doesn’t know that she has. But I think it’s so pure and hilarious,” says Hahn.

Both Clare (Kathryn Hahn) and Danny (Quentin Plair) are haunted by their past, and it’s affecting their present in Hulu’s new Tiny Beautiful Things (all eight episodes dropped April 7). In the limited series, based on Cheryl Strayed’s best-selling book, Claire is a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart. Her marriage to Danny is limping along (barely), while her teenage daughter Rae (Tanzyn Crawford) is pushing her away. She takes that new job because her once-promising writing career is non-existent. Taking on the mantle of Sugar leads to her life unfurling in a complex fabric of memory, exploring her most pivotal moments from childhood through the present day. Clare’s mother, “her beloved, light of her life, foundation, her rock, her everything, every single thing, passed away from cancer when she was 21,” Hahn explained to TV Insider in the video interview,...

Hulu’s Tiny Beautiful Things starts off with a bang… and a thud… and an expletive, as Kathryn Hahn‘s drunken Clare crawls through a window to break into her own home. Why, you ask? Well, her life is completely and totally falling apart.

But before that happens, we witness a confluence of Clare’s interpersonal, professional and familial life that depicts nothing short of ruin: She’s been kicked out of...

Cheryl Strayed likes getting to know people, so perhaps it shouldn’t have been all that surprising when she began our interview by directing questions at me. The vaunted author, screenwriter, columnist, and podcast host wrapped her preceding press assignment a few minutes early, and rather than enjoying some alone time during a busy day at Austin’s SXSW Festival — where she later co-led a featured talk with “Tiny Beautiful Things” showrunner Liz Tigelaar — Strayed invited me to her table. Pleasantries were exchanged, coffee ordered, and the weather commented upon, but before five minutes passed, the consummate conversationalist had me speaking openly about my parents, relationships, and career.
It’s a strange feeling to hear the topics you’ve been sent to elicit from someone else come tumbling out of your own mouth, but Strayed likely has a similar reaction when fielding questions from reporters. While no stranger to sharing...
