She clarifies that her films are not about dealing with the unspoken and that she does not even think in that direction. “What attracts me to stories, from ‘Fire’ onwards are the human struggles to be seen, and how the characters go about achieving their rightful place in the human struggle,” filmmaker Deepa Mehta tells an entertainment portal.
Currently her latest documentary ‘I Am Sirat’, is doing the rounds at various international film festivals. It profiles Sirat Taneja, a transgender woman based in New Delhi who lives and works as a woman in her professional career and as a social media personality, but holds the familial responsibilities of a son to her widowed mother.

Shoojit Sircar’s films always have a certain charm of their own. Their distinctive subjects and idiosyncratic characters are a result of his writing companion- Juhi Chaturvedi, apart from his directorial decisions. What gave both of them such recognition was the 2012 release, “Vicky Donor”; which also won the National Award from that year. However, their collaborations have mostly dealt with people belonging to the middle-class from the social paradigm, who do not live in particularly grave financial conditions. Be it Piku, October, or Vicky Donor, the characters from their films were fairly privileged, largely sharing their emotional concerns. The characters in “Gulabo Sitabo”are hardly like that.
They need to hustle to fulfill their basic needs, which is what primarily interests in this new film. That is the first and foremost where the film becomes politically relevant, where the characters’ urgent needs and desires are more materialistic and less focused on their emotional being.

Gulabo Sitabo, which is streaming on Amazon Prime stars Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana. The Shoojit Sircar film tells the story of two slimy scheming foxes in a game of one upmanship, each one attracting other members to their clan and each one with an agenda of his own.
Mirza (Amitabh Bachchan) – a 78yrs old landlord, would move heaven and earth for his most prized possession – an old Dilapidated Mansion in the heart of Lucknow. But this garden of roses comes with its own cluster of ‘pricky thorns’ – tenants. Amongst them most prominently, Baankey (Ayushmann Khuranna)’ a shrewd, sly and squatted tenant, who matches Mirza bit for bit in their ceaseless bantering.
Gulabo Sitabo is a quirky slice of life where Mirza and Baankey are like Tom and Jerry – unique and unmatched, friend and foe, naughty and smart, little and large, all combine to produce chaos.

Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana star in Shoojit Sircar’s puzzling tale of class and property management
The first big Indian release of 2020 to divert towards streaming is an offbeam, strangely mismanaged parable about property management that renders its stars all but unrecognisable. The established Amitabh Bachchan is buried beneath old-age latex and thick-lensed glasses; emergent pin-up Ayushmann Khurrana is weighed down by a (presumably prosthetic) middle-aged spread. However director Shoojit Sircar’s gaze keeps drifting beyond them, to a location you couldn’t make-under: a mildewing Lucknow mansion house, lorded over by Bachchan’s shuffling miser Mirza, ever looking for ways to kick Khurrana’s collected waifs-and-strays to the kerb. The curious, altogether tentative drama that ensues may be as close as any film-maker has come to signing off on a Hindi redo of TV’s Rising Damp.
Alas, it’s also one of those cases where forced idiosyncrasy...

This is with reference to current baseless allegations that the script of Shoojit Sircar’s Gulabo Sitabo, written by Juhi Chaturvedi has been copied from another story. We would like to clarify some facts and update the media with relevant information that shows this is a misguided attempt to malign the team.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan's fans in Lucknow are in a frenzy ever since Big B arrived in the Uttar Pradesh state capital for a month-long schedule of his new film "Gulabo Sitabo".
Amitabh began shooting for the film on Wednesday at the famous Mahmoodabad House in Qaiserbagh area. He plays the owner of the palatial house in the film and actor Ayushmann Khurrana plays his tenant.
Crowds gathered in the area since morning waiting for a glimpse of the superstar.
Amitabh, dressed in a kurta-pajama and sporting a beard went almost unrecognized even when he moved around the location. Most of the shots were taken indoors and a heavy security arrangement made it impossible for fans to gate-crash.
Ravish Sinha, a student from the Lucknow University, said that he had arrived at the location at 6.a.m and wanted to shake hands with the superstar.

Director Shoojit Sircar follows 2015’s Piku with a one-sided romance pitched between The Big Sick and full-on weepie
Director Shoojit Sircar doubtless spent many hours in plush four-star hotels promoting 2015’s intriguingly low-key Piku, and the experience has inspired a film that initially threatens to be a Rossellinian departure for the Indian mainstream. For once, the focus isn’t on jetsetters swanking around rooftop pools, but the youngsters cleaning up after them for minimal wages and scant health benefits. That last detail proves significant, given that October interrupts its careful survey of a hotel’s intern programme when the dedicated Shiuli (Banita Sandhu) tumbles from a balcony and sustains severe brain damage.
What follows, however, is a shaky, perilously one-sided romance, pitched somewhere between The Big Sick and a full-on weepie. As the moody, irresponsible Danish (Varun Dhawan) steps up, scattering night jasmine blossoms around intensive care in a bid...

October
Starring Varun Dhawan, Introducing Banita Sandhu
Directed by Shoojit Sircar
In a film where everything that could possibly wrong for the characters, does go wrong, there is almost nothing that the director does that can even remotely be considered wrong.
Shoojit Sircar understands and empathizes with the pulse of the working class, their fears and anxieties. It could be an abundant sperm count (Vicky Donor) or constipation (Piku). The anxiety never ceases. In October, it is death and mortality that binds the characters in a clasp of compassion, not in any obvious way. But in the way the universe conspires to keep the world from falling apart.
Juhi Chaturvedi’s writing is so lucid I felt I knew first-hand all the characters who populate her wondrous world of alchemized pain.
The plot is about an obdurate seemingly obnoxious hotel-management trainee, played with wilful gusto by Varun Dhawan, who decides that the quiet,...

Varun Dhawan’s career has had a lot of laughs and dances with films like Judwaa 2 and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania being amongst fan favourites. However, his 2018 releases seem to be taking a shift toward more serious and heartfelt stories. October, is one of those movies. Releasing the 13th April, the romantic drama is directed by Shoojit Sircar, written by Juhi Chaturvedi and starring alongside Varun, Banita Sandhu and Gitanjali Rao in the lead roles. We imagine that knowing a hint of the story that the music for this film is likely to be tender and really aim to toy with the audiences’ heartstrings. This responsibility has been handed to Shantanu Moitra, Abhishek Arora and Anupam Roy all experienced in the art of the love song.

Varun Dhawan, who is making a special place in our hearts with his role of Dan from October, was signed from a very casual meeting with director Shoojit Sircar. When Varun Dhawan had gone to meet Shoojit Sircar at his office, the director immediately decided to cast him as Dan aka Danish Walia. Varun was in his casual attire, ruffled hair and even dropped the glass of his tea while sitting across Shoojit. Shoojit Sircar, then, clicked an image of Varun Dhawan at that moment and sent it to his producers and Juhi Chaturvedi stating that they have found Dan.

Varun Dhawan has been receiving much appreciation and love for his character Dan in Shoojit Sircar’s October. In an interview with a leading publication, Shoojit Sircar spilt the beans on how Varun was casted for the movie, debutant Banita Sandhu and thought behind the story.
Shoojit mentioned how Varun was trying to approach him since a year on text messages before their first meeting that was finally set up back in November 2016. He said, “That day I was rushing to wrap up things before flying off to Kolkata when Varun called asking if we could meet. Since he lived in Juhu, I wondered if he could come over immediately. He’d just woken up and told me he was not dressed. I told him not to bother, we’re pretty casual around here.”
When Varun met Shoojit, the actor was being his clumsy self in his ripped denims, a crumpled shirt and disheveled hair.

The much awaited trailer of Shoojit Sircar’s October is out and the beautiful story of love has created immense anticipation and so many feels. The film has Varun Dhawan in a never seen before avatar and will mark the Bollywood debut of actress Banita Sandhu.

In Shakti Samanta’s 1971 romantic classic Amar Prem, the lead pair Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore never get a chance to get intimate in the way men and women get in real and reel life….no songs, no exchange of affection, no sex….And yet Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore in Shakti Samanta’s Amar Prem were the epitome of romanticism.
I see the same same sublimity in Varun Dhawan’s eyes in October, director Shoojit Sircar and writer Juhi Chuturvedi’s most romantic association to date. The trailer is suffused in shades of green and the hues of morningtime serenity, conveying a closeness to Nature that is as bracing a walk by the riverside on a soft autumn morning.
Varun Dhawan plays a housekeeper at a post hotel in love with the idea of love. The girl whom he follows into the ICU of a hospital barely acknowledges him at their workplace.

While we are all gearing up for the trailer of the much-awaited film October, we wonder how the debutant actress Banita Sandhu, who will share screen space with Varun Dhawan was found to play the role.
Little does anyone know that Shoojit Sircar and Banita have already worked together in a commercial for Doublemint’s “Ek Ajnabee Haseena Se” song. The ad was directed by Shoojit Sircar and had Banita play the female lead. The entire song depicts love but only with expressions.
When Shoojit Sircar met her for the shoot of the ad, he was instantly convinced that Banita was the perfect choice for the film.
Shoojit Sircar shared, “Everyone was in awe of Banita from the chewing gum commercial which I had directed. While I was shooting the ad film, Juhi Chaturvedi and I were also working on the script of October. One day, I clicked a picture...
