The 9th Life Of Louis Drax is…well…interesting. Let’s put it that way. Surely you’d think a comatose boy’s adventure through subconscious waters (literal representation) would trump all, but – or, rather, instead – we’re presented an overbearing story about the dangers of infidelity. Alexandre Aja attempts to parlay his stranglehold on horror into something more darkly whimsical, which unfortunately doesn’t translate into intensified family drama.
It’s pretty harmless younger-adult material adapted from Liz Jensen’s source novelization, and by harmless, I mean a sobering lullaby that ushers in dreamland. Blame blandness, blame Jamie Dornan’s papier-mâché exterior, blame tone deaf narration – honestly, blame it all – because there’s a touching story buried underneath all this soap-opera daddy drama. One that’s damn hard to find…

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.
It feels like the window between Toronto International Film Festival screenings to our local multiplexes has compressed to non-existence. I’m not saying there aren’t a few gems with no intention of being released this side of the New Year (I’m looking at you Free Fire), but there are at least six September releases that will have been shown at Tiff mere weeks or even days beforehand. Either the cinematic quality of blockbusters has gone through the roof or festival programmers have fallen a tad too commercial.

By the looks of its film adaptation, The 9th Life of Louis Drax appears to be a very imaginative, well-written book. But popular fiction does not always translate into a good motion picture, and, sadly, it did not in the case of this story.
The plot revolves around the eponymous character, who after one accident too many has finally landed in a coma. Louis Drax (Aiden Longworth) is a calamity-prone child who ominously narrates at the outset that it was a even mistake he was born. He is protected by a beautiful young mother, Natalie, portrayed by Sarah Gadon (who had another turn as a misunderstood vixen in this summer’s indie film Indignation). While in a coma, he tells of his fantastical life and adventures, including the relationships with his estranged father Peter (Aaron Paul) and his quirky psychologist, Dr. Perez (a silly Oliver Platt).

Ten years after Anthony Minghella optioned Liz Jensen‘s The 9th Life of Louis Drax to develop cinematically, it was his son Max who saw it begin production. The younger Minghella’s first credited screenplay, probably brought to director Alexandre Aja on set of their previous collaboration Horns, it would ultimately take another two for the finished film’s release. If I were to wager a guess as to why I’d say the distributors found themselves painted in a corner unable to figure out how to sell it. Rated R for reasons that probably could have been cut to earn a PG-13 if desired, the story arrives from the viewpoint of a nine year-old boy—his dark fantasy delivered in a way that feels perfectly primed for teenagers rather than adults.
Young Louis Drax (Aiden Longworth) is an original. He’s smart, perceptive, and extremely accident-prone from the womb.

“Accident-prone” is how doctors describe the main character of “The 9th Life of Louis Drax,” a nine-year-old boy who’s survived nine near-death experiences. Louis has been electrocuted, stung by a swarm of bees, and had a chandelier fall on him as a baby, each time narrowly avoiding death to start a new “life.” Can a single child get into that many accidents, or are greater forces at work? That is the question looming over every frame of director Alexandre Aja’s mysterious thriller based on Liz Jensen’s best-selling novel of the same name. Though the movie skillfully straddles the line between the real and supernatural, it never delivers on its darkly intriguing premise.

“The 9th Life of Louis Drax” works as both a children’s movie for adults and a grownup movie for kids, a rare balancing act most young-adult fare can’t pull off. Director Alexandre Aja‘s big-screen version of the best-selling novel by Liz Jensen (adapted by Max Minghella) is the kind of film you can imagine today’s kiddos one day recalling as the first “real” movie they saw growing up, its tone dark but not despairing. The film’s titular young hero (Aiden Longworth) is as accident-prone as he is resilient: Louis has survived one near-death experience in each year of his life.

Okay, film fans let’s get serious. Really serious now. It’s September, so we’re done with all that summertime fluff. Though we’ll see another flick set in that galaxy far, far away in just a couple months, it’s now the season for those sober, somber awards contenders. And what better award bait than a literary adaptation. Y’know, bringing a big best-selling book to the big screen. This weekend another classy tome heads into theatres with The Light Between The Oceans. Oh, and the flick we’re about to discuss stars an actor who became the talk of the planet with his role in a steamy novel-turned-movie just last year. But’s what’s with this whimsical title, you may ask. Well, it may sound like a children’s story (like The Bfg) or even a “young adult” novel, but its focus quickly shifts to deceiving...

Horror film-maker Alexandre Aja turns in a tonally odd supernatural thriller which hits its stride when creepy stuff starts to happen
Actor and screenwriter Max Minghella has adapted Liz Jensen’s 2004 novel for the cinema; horror specialist Alexandre Aja directs, and the result is a supernatural mystery thriller, slightly overcooked and tonally odd – and uncertain if its juvenile lead is supposed to be cute or sinister. But it is watchable and even intriguing in its weird way.
Canadian star Sarah Gadon is in full Hitchcock-blonde mode as Natalie Drax, the mother of a strange, accident-prone boy called Louis (Aiden Longworth). Poor Louis tumbles from a cliff, after a confrontation with his violent stepfather Peter (Aaron Paul) during a family picnic, but miraculously survives in a coma and comes under the care of Dr Allan Pascal (Jamie Dornan), a specialist in sleepwalking and consciousness while in a vegetative state. Creepy stuff starts happening.

The 9th Life Of Louis Drax is a pitch-black psychological drama disguised as a romantic melodrama and shot like a family-friendly fantasy film. Remnants of director Alexandre Aja’s horror-movie past appear in startling flashes, like the sight of a child’s pale, lifeless body on a metal slab under sickly florescent light. These would be less jarring were the rest of the film not shot in a warm, golden light that gives the back of everyone’s head an angelic glow. Particularly in scenes with his psychiatrist, young star Aiden Longworth delivers dialogue laced with a precocious cynicism that’s completely missing from the cloying whimsy of his frequent voice-over narration. In other words, this movie can’t decide how it wants to look or what it wants to say. You could even call the jumble of styles and tones “quirky,” were you so inclined.

This Past Weekend:
As expected, Fede Alvarez’s thriller Don’t Breathe (Screen Gems), starring Jane Levy and Stephen Lang, won the weekend, but it did way more than we predicted, doing better than most movies released in the last weekend of August, winning the weekend with $26.4 million, pretty much double what I predicted. That’s a pretty great testament to the power of Screen Gems’ marketing campaign and that’s more than double what the movie cost to make. Jason Statham’s Mechanic: Resurrection (Summit/Lionsgate) didn’t fare as well as it opened in fifth place with $7.5 million in 2,258 theaters, about where I predicted. Of the more moderate releases, the Obama date movie Southside with You (Roadside Attractions) took in $3 million in around 800 theaters,...

It’s hard to say much about director’s Alexandre Aja’s latest movie The 9th Life of Louis Drax without spoiling some of its many twists.
Based on Liz Jensen’s novel and adapted by actor Max Minghella (who appeared in Aja’s previous movie Horns), the thriller stars Aiden Longworth as the title character, a young accident-prone boy who has survived numerous near-death experiences only to fall off a cliff while picnicking with his parents (Aaron Paul and Sarah Gadon). The fall puts Louis into a coma and as his father, the prime suspect, goes on the run, Louis’ mother starts to have feelings for his doctor (Jamie Dornan), who also wonders if there’s more to what happened than what he’s being told.

There are a fair number of odd stories coming to theaters in the next few months, but it’s going to be hard for any of them to compare to The 9th Life of Louis Drax, which hits September 2nd.
The film is based on the book by Liz Jensen, and is interestingly directed by Alexandre Aja, who managed some fine, if underappeciated, work on Horns. Neither film is likely to stand out to anyone as a powerhouse effort of direction, but Horns delivered a powerful subtlety in its conversations that bodes well here.
The film’s trailer has already been around (see below), but there’s something odd about its avoidance of the story’s titular oddity, and while posters (let’s face it) are really neither here nor there when it comes to ramping up excitement for a film, this teaser is a nice effort at laying the foundation of layering.

"Children always know so much more than we think..." Lionsgate has revealed an intriguing trailer for a psychological thriller called The 9th Life of Louis Drax, adapted from Liz Jensen's novel of the same name. The film tells the story of a boy who has survived eight near-death accidents throughout his strange life so far, and falls off of a cliff on his ninth birthday during a picnic with his parents, once again barely surviving. The cast features Jamie Dornan, Sarah Gadon, Aaron Paul, Oliver Platt, Molly Parker, Barbara Hershey, and Aiden Longworth as Louis Drax. There's some really weird stuff going on in this that makes it look like much more than just any old thriller, and it's worth taking a look at because it's so fascinating. What's up with this kid? I guess we'll have to see this (or read the book) to find out. Take a look.

Fifty Shades star Jamie Dornan ventures beyond death in the eerie first trailer for The 9th Life of Louis Drax, Lionsgate’s much-anticipated adaptation that places newcomer Aiden Longworth in the shoes of the doomed Louis Drax.
In the wake of a tragic accident (?), Longworth’s pint-sized protagonist is trapped in a coma on the eve of his ninth birthday and as more evidence begins to emerge, Dornan’s decorated neurologist Allan Pascal begins to suspect that there’s something bigger at play than a simple tumble over the edge.
As Pascal’s methods begin to stray further and further from the norm, today’s snippet begins to indulge in supernatural elements, as Dornan’s character experiments with a mind-bending technique in a last-ditch attempt to communicate with Louis Drax who is, at this point, teetering on the clutches of death.

After Alexandre Aja directed Max Minghella in Horns a few years back, they two are collaborating again. The director is helming Minghella’s first feature screenplay with The 9th Life of Louis Drax, which is based on Liz Jensen‘s book. Led by Jamie Dornan, Sarah Gadon, Aaron Paul, Oliver Platt, Molly Parker, Barbara Hershey, and Aiden Longworth, the first trailer has now landed.
A mix of psychological thriller and fantasy, there’s some interesting imagery in the film, even if it looks like Aja is working with a lower budget this time around. Shot back in 2014, the film will finally arrive this fall and hopefully the delay didn’t have to do with its quality, but we’ll find out shortly. Check out the trailer below.

Depending on how you look at it, young Louis Drax (Aiden Longworth) is either very, very lucky or tremendously unlucky. Having survived eight near-death accidents — one for each year of his life, a pretty terrible way to demarcate life-threatening injuries — Louis falls (literally) into another terrible accident when he tumbles of a steep cliff and right into a coma. On his ninth birthday. Something’s not right here, right?

Fifty Shades of Grey isn’t the only Jamie Dornan show in town. The smooth-as-a-pint-of-silk Irishman also has The 9th Life Of Louis Drax upcoming and Empire has been to the film’s Vancouver set to whip up… okay, gather some info on the supernatural thriller. Starting with this first-look still from the film that sees Dornan jumpstarting a car with his mind. At least, we think that’s what he’s doing here. Feel free to completely disagree. The film tells the story of Louis Drax, a boy in a coma (Aiden Longworth, Hector And The Search For Happiness) whose mental journeys will no doubt tease some striking visuals from the director. By his bedside is Dornan’s neurologist, Dr. Allan Pascal, who fights to awaken him from his comatose state. The twist? Louis’s injured state may not have been an accident. Aaron Paul, Louis’ dad, is prime...
