Exclusive: Jude Law’s Riff Raff Entertainment has received “significant funding” via a new TV development deal with France’s Newen Connect.
Unveiled at Newen’s London TV Screenings event, the deal sees Riff Raff, which the two-time Oscar nominee co-founded with Ben Jackson, handed a cash injection to develop a slate of TV projects, while giving the company a distribution pipeline.
The development partnership has already spawned three early-stage projects: political thriller Foreign Desk starring Law and written by Marek Horn, a female-led show from Pure writer Kirstie Swain and a “talent-led TV project with acclaimed playwright Chris Urch.”
The investment figure was not disclosed but is referred to as “significant.” It is being underwritten by European studio-financier Anton, which separately invested €50M ($54M) in Newen in early 2022 that allowed the French major to move into features.

Ella Purnell (“Yellowjackets”) will star in and executive produce “Sweetpea,” a female driven original drama series from pay TV operator Sky.
The series is adapted from C.J. Skuse’s novel of the same name by writer and executive producer Kirstie Swain (“Pure”), and written by Kirstie Swain (“Run”) and Krissie Ducker (“Killing Eve”), alongside Laura Jayne Tunbridge (“Nights”) and Selina Lim (“Sex Education”). The series will be directed by Ella Jones (“The Baby”), who also serves as executive producer.
Purnell stars as Rhiannon Lewis, who doesn’t make much of an impression – people walk past her in the street without a second glance. She’s continually overlooked for a promotion at work, the guy she likes won’t commit, and her dad is really sick. Then everything in her life turns upside down. BBC Three Comedy Pilots Includes Latest Female-Led Project From ‘Fleabag’ Producer Two Brothers Pics
BBC Three has revealed a slate of four Comedy Slices pilots, which include Dinosaur, the latest female-led project from Fleabag producer Two Brothers Pictures.
The 22-minute comedy is written by Elizabeth McGovern and Simon Curtis’ daughter, Matilda Curtis, and centers on Ashley Storrie-portrayed Nina, an autistic woman who has never sought any kind of diagnosis.
Nina’s always felt a little different from other people but she finds happiness in the world thanks to her passion for paleontology and her friendship with her bubbly younger sister Evie. However, when Evie asks Nina to be her maid of honor, Nina decides to step out of her comfort zone with a challenge: to find herself a date to bring to the wedding.
Dinosaur is executive produced by Harry Williams and Jack Williams, who will be hoping to repeat the Emmy-winning success of Fleabag. The show is one of three other female-led comedies unveiled by the BBC.

Throughout “Pure,” Marnie keeps telling herself there’s something wrong with her. Regardless of the situation — a family gathering, a crowded Tube car, or alone in her rented walk-in closet — certain thoughts keep winding their way into her consciousness.
Even though “Pure” chooses an effective way to show how Marnie (played by Charly Clive) is beset by her own imagination — subliminal flashes of face-licking, wayward fingers, and strangers in throes — it’s a compelling series just as much for the rest of her story. In showing one woman’s tumultuous first few weeks in a new city, “Pure” is a solid case study in how to build a show from scratch.
The audience gets dropped in right in from the outset, starting with Marnie (a relatively recent college grad) already midway through an excursion to distance herself from the small Scottish town. After a disastrous anniversary for her parents — her...

Update: Sky has confirmed an eight-episode order.
Exclusive, October 30, 2019: Top of the Lake producer See-Saw Films is adapting C J Skuse’s novel Sweetpea for Sky Atlantic.
The company, which also makes SundanceTV’s short-form series State of the Union, is developing the comedy drama, which is described as American Psycho-meets-Fleabag, written by Pure writer Kirstie Swain. The hope is that it will turn into an eight-part order.
The book, which was published in 2017, chronicles a year in the life of an ambitious but bored young woman living and working in a small British town. By day her job as an editorial assistant is demeaning and unsatisfying, but outside of work she turns to altogether darker, grislier pursuits. Because the girl everyone overlooks might just be able to get away with murder.

Exclusive: Sid Gentle Films is looking to build on the international smash hit Killing Eve with another crime adaptation. The British producer has secured the rights to Watching You, the first installment in Swedish author Jan Arnald’s latest series of detective novels, Deadline can reveal.
Better known by his pen name Arne Dahl, the Scandinavian writer first published Watching You in 2016 and the novel tells the story of Stockholm-based detective, Sam Berger, and his attempts to find a serial killer following the disappearance of a 15-year-old girl. As the case unravels, it reveals sinister connections with Berger’s own life.
Berger has gone on to appear in two other novels, Hunted and You Are Next, much like the recurring characters in Dahl’s Intercrime novels, which were the subject of a major Scandi-noir TV series last decade, titled Arne Dahl. That series was made by The Bridge producer Filmlance...

The year 2019 was a particularly good year for Brits in Hollywood, culminating in half of the Primetime Emmys heading to the other side of the pond with the likes of Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Succession creator Jesse Armstrong winning big.
British and Irish writers have always done well in the U.S. both in television and on the feature side, but the last few years have been particularly kind to those making the 6,000-mile trek to Tinseltown, from The Mentalist and Gotham’s Bruno Heller to Saving Mr Banks and Terra Nova writer Kelly Marcel and Catastrophe co-creator Sharon Horgan.
As such, Deadline is taking a look at the next generation of British and Irish writers who are making waves in the UK and stand a good chance of landing a hit U.S. series.
