Exclusive: Producer Kate Cohen (Jane Got a Gun) has tapped Oscar nominee Lesley Paterson (All Quiet on the Western Front) and Simon Marshall to script a feature adaptation of Viktor Frankl’s classic treatise, Man’s Search for Meaning. For Paterson’s husband and writing partner, Marshall, the project has taken on particular resonance of late, having just been diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer.
Translated into 50 languages, with over 16 million copies sold, Frankl’s riveting account of his time in the Nazi concentration camps, and his exploration of the human will to find meaning in spite of unspeakable adversity, has offered solace and guidance to generations of readers since it was first published in 1946. At the heart of his work is the conviction that the primary human drive is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but rather the pursuit of meaning.

The White House and the Anti-Defamation League joined a chorus of voices Tuesday to condemn Fox News and Greg Gutfeld for comments in which he defended the notion there were benefits to slavery by saying “utility” had kept some Jews alive during the Holocaust.
Gutfeld, appearing Monday on “The Five,” was discussing with the show’s roundtable of co-hosts recent guidelines Florida’s Department of Education had instituted in which public middle schools were told to teach students there were personal benefits to slavery such as work skills.
Gutfeld delivered the remarks as a counterpoint after host Jessica Tarlov asked, “Would someone say about the Holocaust, for instance, that there were some benefits for Jews?”
“Did you ever read ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’?” Gutfeld quickly asked. “Vik Frankl talks about how you had to survive in a concentration camp by having skills. You had to be useful. Utility, utility kept you alive!

The White House condemned comments made by Fox News host Greg Gutfeld during The Five, as he was discussing slavery and new teaching standards put in place in Florida.
On Monday’s show, Gutfeld was reacting to fellow panelist Jessica Tarlov, who holds the liberal seat on the show. She was talking about the new Florida curriculum, which has drawn heavy criticism for a provision that students be taught that slaves developed skills “which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”
Tarlov said that she was “fundamentally uncomfortable” with that provision, and said that it was similar to someone pointing out that Jews in concentration camps during the Holocaust “learned a strong work ethic.”
Gutfeld then pointed to Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning, and how he talks about “how you had to survive in a concentration camp by having skills. You had to be useful.

In 2016, I stood on the start line of my 263rd race as a professional triathlete waiting to dive into the Costa Rica surf and swim the fastest 1 mile of my life, mountain-bike 40 kilometers through grueling jungle trails and run 10 kilometers of hills, all in 105-degree heat. I was a five-time world champion at this event, a professional mountain biker and a cross-country running champion. When it comes to self-flagellatory endurance and dogged persistence, I’ve earned my stripes. But on that blistering morning at Playa Conchal, I had a major problem.
The day before, I crashed my bike and broke my shoulder. I couldn’t lift my left arm above my waist. I knew I could get through the bike if I strapped my arm at a 90-degree angle to the handlebars, and I could just about run if I used T-rex arms. But the swim had to be one-armed,...

Sobini Films, the production company behind soon-to-released Shields Green biopic Emperor, said it will donate $1 for every digital transaction during the first month of film’s release to the NAACP. Set for a digital release on August 18, via Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, the film is based on the inspiring journey of Green, an American freedom fighter who escaped from slavery and joined the raid on Harper’s Ferry, the key battle of the abolitionist movement which helped spark the beginning of the Civil War and alter the course of American history. “All too often vital narratives, such as Emperor, are left out of Hollywood and our history books,” said Robin Harrison, director, NAACP Hollywood Bureau. “The NAACP is inspired by this portrayal of a true American hero and grateful for the opportunity to put the proceeds from the movie to use in our modern-day fight against systemic racism and racial injustice.
