On Aug. 8, wildfires exploded across the Hawaiian island of Maui, burning entire neighborhoods and forcing thousands of people to flee their homes. A series of fires broke out across the island over four days, creating billions of dollars of damage, scorching thousands of acres, and killing at least 115 people, per the Associated Press. The fires have destroyed entire communities, ruining countless livelihoods, leaving hospitals overflowing with burn victims, and forcing thousands of people into shelters, according to CNN.
On Aug. 31, Dwayne Johnson and Oprah Winfrey announced that they'd come together to support recovery efforts by kicking off a new fund with a $10 million donation. The fund, called The People's Fund of Maui, will provide Hawaii residents above the age of 18 who were affected by the fires with a monthly $1,200 stipend. A dozen Los Angeles professional sports organizations are teaming up to donate $450,000 to help people affected by the wildfires in Maui, it was announced today.
The Angels, Angel City Football Club, Chargers, Clippers, Dodgers, Anaheim Ducks, LA Galaxy, Lafc, Kings, Lakers, Rams and Sparks have come together to support the American Red Cross relief efforts for those in need.
The Rams will use their preseason game Saturday against the Las Vegas Raiders at SoFi Stadium to help those affected by the wildfires. The team said money raised through both the sale and auction of custom-made “Malama Maui” shirts as well as the in-game 50/50 Raffle will support Red Cross efforts.

“This is the worst disaster that Maui has ever faced, probably that Hawaii has ever faced,” says Maui native Kainoa Horcajo, a Hawaiian cultural advisor and the co-owner of consultancy The Mo’olelo Group. With the death toll reaching 111, and 1,000 people still unaccounted for amid the devastation and destruction, the Maui disaster is officially the deadliest wildfire in the U.S. since 1918. “Businesses come second. The people and the families are first,” says Horcajo. “We know a lot of people want to come out here. But we need to focus our resources on taking care of our local families, on making sure that our visitor industries, our hotels have the ability to help in the community. That we’re all working together.”

Six days in, the wildfire on the Hawaiian island of Maui is one of the deadliest in U.S. history. The flames started on Aug. 8, and spread quickly, soon encompassing major residential areas and leaving evacuating residents plagued by spotty information and hazardous roadblocks, the Associated Press reports. The death toll has been raised to 96, but doesn’t include the thousands more unaccounted for amidst active search and rescue operations.

Kevin Federline and his family are safe in Hawaii amid the raging fires on Maui that have claimed the lives of at least 55 and displaced thousands of residents and tourists.
A source tells Et that Federline, his two sons — Jayden, 16, and Sean, 17, whom he shares with Britney Spears — and his wife, Victoria, are not physically affected by the wildfires “because they live on one of the neighboring islands, where they moved two weeks ago.” The source added that Federline and his family are settling into their new rental home, “but it has been upsetting and traumatic for them to see all the death and devastation on Maui.”
Federline and his family just recently moved to Hawaii. Spears, who is “sad” and “disappointed” by the move, signed off on the children’s move back in May. Mark Vincent Kaplan, Federline’s powerhouse attorney, tells Et, “Everyone is grateful that Britney approved...

Oprah Winfrey has joined in handing out emergency supplies to citizens of the Hawaiian island of Maui.
At an emergency centre set up within the war memorial stadium in Maui’s capital, Winfrey joined in efforts to support those left homeless by the fires that have sprung up in several areas, including the historic town of Lahaina which has been devastated with landmarks burnt to the ground.
The entertainer and media mogul helped to distribute supplies on Thursday, and she told the BBC:
“It’s a little overwhelming. But I’m really so pleased to have so many people supporting, people bringing what they can and doing what they can.”
Winfrey told the BBC that she had earlier visited the centre to ascertain what people needed, before going shopping and returning with goods including pillows, diapers, shampoo, sheets and pillowcases.

“These are the kind of times that really test you,” said Maui Film Commissioner Tracy Bennett in an interview with Deadline today about the wildfires that have swept the island and, specifically, leveled historic Lahaina Town. Bennett, who has been in the job 10 years, related a number of harrowing details from the past few days, but his chief message was one of strength, hope and community.
“Hawaiians are about Ohana, family,” he said. “In times like this, it really shows their resilience.”
Bennett is hoping that another sort of family, the entertainment community, will also pull together and support Maui in its time of need.
Hawaii Gov. Josh Green estimated the cost to rebuild would be in the billions, and some have already stepped up to help. Amazon Executive Chairman Jeff Bezos and fiancée Lauren Sánchez, vice chair of the Bezos Earth Fund, are establishing a $100 million fund to “help...

Among the thousands of Maui residents impacted by the fires there over the past few days is Mick Fleetwood. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer lost his waterfront restaurant, Fleetwood’s, in the blaze that tragically reduced much of Lahaina to rubble.
“This is a devastating moment for Maui and many are suffering unimaginable loss,” wrote the musician. “Fleetwoods on front (sic.) Street has been lost and while we are heartbroken our main priority is the safety of our dear staff and team members.”
The multi-level restaurant was a local landmark and adorned with Fleetwood Mac memorabilia which is also now, assumedly, lost. In the photo below, the footprint of the restaurant sits at about the center of the frame near the 90-degree “L” formed by the coast. The status of Fleetwood’s home, which is also in West Maui, is unclear, according to the New York Times.

Update Sunday 9:04Am after Sunday 6:20Am and Saturday Am post: Even with yesterday’s good news about New York’s plans to reopen cinemas on Oct. 23, albeit sans NYC, we’re still a ways off from seeing the domestic box office back on its feet. Roughly 16% of the nation is still closed: Los Angeles County still needs to open, and San Francisco health officials need to Ok the sale of concessions for exhibitors to come back in the City by the Bay. Oh, and Regal needs to turn its lights back on. Then what we need is a fire-breathing, all appealing tentpole, but one that’s boosted by a mega 360-degree mega marketing campaign.
For now independent distributors on a budget are braving the way and providing exhibition with titles in an effort to keep the lights on.

Liam Neeson’s thriller “Honest Thief” limped to first place at the domestic box office, debuting with $3.7 million. Those ticket sales, among the lowest ever to land at No. 1, came in slightly ahead of Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” and Robert De Niro’s family comedy “War With Grandpa.”
“Tenet,” now in its seventh week of release, grossed $1.6 million, bringing its U.S. haul to $50.6 million. The sci-fi epic, from Warner Bros., continues to fare better overseas. “Tenet” generated $5 million at the international box office for a global haul of $333.9 million.
Overall, it was another quiet weekend at the weekend box office as theaters that reopened have resorted to reduce hours of operation or closing down again entirely due to low attendance. Apprehension among moviegoers, coupled with the lack of new potential blockbusters are to blame for lackluster ticket sales.

In a pandemic moment where The War With Grandpa gets headlines for topping the weekend box office with just $3.6 million, is it possible for films with stars and reasonable budgets to make a go of it while the two biggest theatrical markets, New York and Los Angeles, remain closed? Next to try will be Honest Thief, the Liam Neeson action film that opens Friday. Distributor Open Road tells Deadline that the film will go with a wide theatrical release, and no VOD. It will open in four different formats: Imax, Dolby Vision, 4Dx and D-Box.
Tom Ortenberg, who reemerged at Open Road when Josh Green’s Raven Capital relaunched the distributor, said that the film has secured over 180 Imax screens to go with about 2400 theaters in the U.S.

It is Michael Langdon's world, and we are all just living in it.
Not for long though, if Michael's involvement with this new cult gathering is meant to foreshadow exactly how destruction started for the rest of the world.
During American Horror Story Season 8 Episode 8, Michael found himself lost when all the power that he had disappeared. From there he stumbled upon a cult that is planning to bring about the end of the world and found a way to bring Mead back at the same time.
This all circled back to American Horror Story Season 8 Episode 1, our formal introduction to the present day characters and situations, by allowing us to see how some people had ties long before Outpost #3 existed.
There were also teases of how the end of the world came to be, specifically the role that Michael found himself playing because of other people's expectations.

Corrections Officer Desi Piscatella is still causing problems in Orange Is the New Black season six . . . and he's not even alive! A piece of the new season is figuring out who killed the abusive Co, and the main suspect is Tasha "Taystee" Jefferson. However, it wasn't Taystee who pulled the trigger, and it wasn't even an inmate.
We don't doubt that karma played a role in Piscatella's death. During the riot of season five, Piscatella breaks into Litchfield to seek revenge on some inmates. He captures a bunch of them, including Piper, Alex, Big Boo, Nicky, Red, and Blanca, and tortures them in an empty room. When the tables turn and the women tape him up in the abandoned pool, it seems to take a lot to stop themselves from shooting him with his own gun. Red decides to let him go, and he is free to walk out.

Steve Bannon said Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has “ruined his career” over his support for Oprah Winfrey during her Golden Globes speech, but also seemingly praised the Time’s Up movement, calling it “anti-patriarchy.” According to Vanity Fair, the foreword of the paperback version of Bloomberg journalist Josh Green’s book “Devil’s Bargain: Steve Bannon, Donald Trump and the Nationalist Uprising” chronicles a conversation held between Green and Bannon as they sat down to watch this year’s Golden Globes. As actresses walked down the red carpet wearing black dresses and used their acceptance speeches to denounce the behavior of men in Hollywood, Bannon...

Exclusive: The distributor has picked up North American rights to Kerstin Karlhuber’s Lgbt feature debut.
The drama premiered at The Human Rights Campaign in Washington D.C., and has played a number of festivals.
Tom Wopat, Michael Grant, Josh Green and Gregory Harrison star in Fair Haven, about a piano prodigy out of ex-gay conversion therapy pressured by his father to run the family farm.
Breaking Glass CEO Richard Wolff and Amanda Rae Simon negotiated the deal with producer Tom Malloy, the film’s international sales agent Robbie Little of The Little Film Company, and Robert L. Siegal.
“Spreading the message of acceptance and tolerance is our mission,” said Karlhuber. “If we can help young people gain confidence in their differences and maybe open a few closed minds we’ll have achieved our goal”, said director Kerstin Karlhuber.

Instantly forgettable but inoffensive fluff… you know, for kids. And “inoffensive” is better than can be said for many movies aimed at children. I’m “biast” (pro): didn’t hate two of the three previous installments…
I’m “biast” (con): …but the most recent one was awful
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
After a detour into terribleness with their third outing, Chipwrecked, the CGI singing rodents Alvin and the Chipmunks return to form with their fourth film, Road Chip. Yes, I have seen all entries in the cinematic oeuvre of the Chipmunks — it’s not all fun and games in this film-criticism racket — so I know that there is a “usual” to them: instantly forgettable but inoffensive fluff… you know, for kids. And since “inoffensive” is better than can be said for many movies aimed at children, the Chipmunks yet again eke out a pass.

The grating, helium-pitched sound of barely passable children’s entertainment returns to movie theaters in a familiar and mercifully brisk package. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip is the as clever-as-its-title fourth (yes, fourth!) installment of this live action and CGI hybrid franchise, in which Dave (a dejected Jason Lee) plays guardian to the trio of singing, farting forest animals.
Alvin, Simon, and Theodore (voiced respectively by Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney – not that you can tell) worry that Dave might replace the ‘Munks after he introduces the boys to his new girlfriend Shira (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) – the kind of open heart surgeon who wears her stethoscope to mini-golf – and her “evil” son Miles (Josh Green). After Alvin finds Dave with an engagement ring, the Chipmunks team up with their new nemesis Miles to travel to Miami and stop their parents from marrying.

They’re less annoying than the Minions, their version of Uptown Funk will make you smile, and this silly movie has an old-fashioned vaudeville romp at its heart
If you can get past the fart jokes, the poop jokes, the hashtag Twitter jokes and all the furious product placement (and this is just the first 10 minutes) there is, I swear, a slightly charming, old fashioned, vaudeville-inspired romp at the heart of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip. While this kiddie pic never reaches the self-aware levels of cheeseball entertainment found in Raja Gosnell’s first Smurfs movie, The Road Chip shares a similar worship of 70s/80s Muppets, meaning what drives it is that spark to dim the lights and put on a show. It’s a slightly more noble calling than just making squibbly noises for a laugh like those irritating Satan spawn known as the Minions. The...

Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Road Chip is crashing into theaters a little early this Christmas.
Alvin, Simon and Theodore are very pleased to now be opening on December 18th, 2015.
When asked if it concerned them their Road Chip adventure was opening on the same weekend as a certain other giant mega movie, Alvin simply responded, “Do or do not. There is no try.” No one was quite sure what he meant.
In addition to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Universal Pictures’ Sisters will also debut on December 18.
