[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Good Sam series premiere.] If you’ve been looking for something to fill the House-sized hole in your heart, CBS’ new medical drama Good Sam should do the trick. When we meet Dr. Sam Griffith (Sophia Bush), she’s convincing a patient that he’s in good hands with Dr. Rob. “Griff” Griffith (Jason Isaacs), “the best” cardiothoracic surgeon, in her opinion. “I know that you are scared. I was, too,” she says. She had heart surgery a long time ago. When the team gathers in the scrub room, Sam’s sure to tell everyone they all have strengths, only for Griff to walk in and disagree. He sees a lot of weaknesses: “pathologically arrogant” (Michael Stahl-David’s Dr. Caleb Tucker), “profoundly insecure” (Omar Maskati’s Dr. Isan M. Shah), “emotionally unpredictable” (Skye P. Marshall’s Dr. Lex Trulie), and “exceptionally vain” (Davi Santos’ Dr. Joey Costa). And as the cardiac fellow,...

CBS has finally dropped the official trailer for Good Sam, its latest medical drama.
The show finds Dr. Sam Griffith (Sophia Bush) taking on the role of Chief of Surgery when her father, Dr. Rob Griffith (Jason Isaacs), falls into a coma.
The drama picks up when Rob wakes up months later intending to resume his career where he left off.
“Sam is tasked with supervising this egotistical expert with a scalpel who never acknowledged her stellar talent,” reads the official logline for the project.
Sam's father "defies Sam’s authority and challenges her medical expertise, the big question becomes whether this father and daughter will ever be able to mend their own relationship as expertly as they heal the hearts of their patients.”
It is a compelling hook, but the success will all come down to whether the show manages to portray the fraught relationship between the father and daughter well.

It comes from executive producers David Hollander and Brian D'Arcy James, and the pilot was directed by Mark Cendrowski.
Holmes stars as an ordinary guy who turns to pro bowling to support his family after being laid off from the Gm factory.
Chi McBride and Katie Lowes costar.
Smallwood, from CBS Studios, seems like a good fit for Holmes.
He previously created and starred on Crashing that aired on HBO from 2017-19.
The Sophia Bush pilot, Good Sam, also got the greenlight.
This show was held over from last year's pilot season,...

Medical drama Good Sam, starring Sophia Bush, and bowling comedy Smallwood fronted by Pete Holmes have been picked up to series by CBS.
The pick-ups come ahead of CBS’ upfronts on Wednesday and follow a busy day of pick-ups, renewals and cancellations at ABC and NBC.
Good Sam and Smallwood are expected to be for fall, as per traditional CBS practice, but that has yet to be confirmed.
However, they won’t be joined on the schedule by CBS’ other three pilots; political drama Ways & Means, starring Patrick Dempsey, the Sarah Cooper/ Cindy Chupack single-camera comedy and Welcome To Georgia, starring Hannah Simone and Elizabeth Hurley, have all been passed on.
Both Good Sam and Smallwood were seen as frontrunners in their genre with Good Sam considered a solid medical drama for the network that has been looking for a curative franchise, and pro bowling comedy Smallwood was getting...

CBS has ordered a pair of series for the 2021-22 season, the comedy “Smallwood” and medical drama “Good Sam.”
“Smallwood,” based on the real-life story of professional bowler Tom Smallwood, is being written by Mark Gross, who executive produces with David Hollander and Brian D’Arcy James. Mark Cendrowski will direct. The logline reads: After being laid off from the assembly line at the Gm factory, a seemingly ordinary man makes the extraordinary decision to provide for his family by following his dream of becoming a professional bowler.
Pete Holmes will star alongside Chi McBride and Katie Lowes.
“Good Sam” stars Sophia Bush as a “talented yet stifled surgeon.” She embraces her leadership role after her renowned and pompous boss falls into a coma. When he awakens and wants to resume surgery, however, it falls to her to supervise this overbearing blowhard, who never acknowledged her talents — and also happens to be her father.

“She made a choice based on the fact that she loves June, she does,” Brewer tells TheWrap
(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Episode 405 of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”)
This week’s episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale” ended with a blast, literally, when June (Elisabeth Moss) and Janine (Madeline Brewer) set off together in search of the Nighthawks, following Janine’s initial decision to stay with Steven’s (Omar Maskati) rebel hangout in Chicago. An aerial bombing broke out above them, and June and Janine were separated in a blast that definitely would have been hard for either of them to survive.
But come the end of the Season 4 episode, we see June alive in the rubble, badly injured and attempting to find Janine. At which point she is discovered by her long-lost friend Moira (Samira Wiley), who is working for one of the NGOs allowed into Chicago during a temporary...

This The Handmaid’s Tale review contains spoilers.
That ending was earned. Under ordinary circumstances, the un-ironic use of Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’ over a slo-mo reunion scene would result in disciplinary action from the mawkishness police, but The Handmaid’s Tale gets away with it. This drama has been feel-bad for so long, it’s saved up enough feel-good pennies to splurge on moments just like this one: June and Moira, reunited. Drink it in.
The moment was staged by director Christina Choe with dialled-up emotion and zero edge. A silhouetted Moira emerged from the battlefield smoke like a wartime sweetheart as the love song soared. It couldn’t have been played bigger if Moira had swept a fainting June up in her arms and carried her to safety. And you know what? After what these characters have been through, she’d have been welcome to do just that. This show...

The psychological thriller Evil Eye is now available to watch on Amazon Prime Video now. The film is based on the Audible Original by Madhuri Shekar and is directed by award winning directors Rajeev and Elan Dassani. The film is produced under actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ home banner Purple Pebble Pictures and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions.
Leading actress Sarita Chaudhry recently spoke out about what it was like working on the film co-produced by Priyanka. “What impresses me is that Priyanka, where she’s at with her career, could continue solo just thinking about her career. Evil Eye (Amazon Prime)
Starring Sarita Choudhury, Sunita Mani, Omar Maskati, Bernard White
Directed by Elan & Rajeev Dassani
There is very little reason why we should sit through this blindly fallacious fear fare. Yes, there is one good performance. And it’s always a pleasure to watch Sarita Cahoudhary ever since she made her memorable debut opposite, ahem, Denzel Washington in Mira Nair’s Mississippi Masala. We don’t see her often enough. But if this is the kind of cinema we get to see her in then we might as well not see her.
The evil in Evil Eye is such a dispensable imposition that we are left looking at a plot that seems to have been written with the sole purpose of making super naturalism look cool. Regrettably the eerie twist at the end is anything but convincing, let alone credible.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas recently spoke about her new all South Asian cast release, Evil Eye, produced under her home banner Purple Pebble Pictures and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions. The actress says the project is “a big deal” for her because of multiple aspects, one of which is the ‘two really strong female parts’, played by actresses of South Asian heritage: Sarita Choudhury and Sunita Mani.
Speaking with US-based entertainment television newsmagazine Entertainment Tonight, Priyanka weighed in on the diverse cast and said she wants to create opportunities for South Asian artists in Hollywood through her production house. “My quest in life, as a producer, is to influx Hollywood with brown people, because we don’t see enough of us. And to be able to do an all South Asian cast in a movie with Amazon and Blumhouse — who are both powerhouses — was a dream come true for me.”

Blumhouse’s “Evil Eye” is a horror film that delves deeply into reincarnation and other Hindu philosophies, and star Sunita Mani saw similarities between the film and her personal life — one that was particularly “spooky.”
“My mom’s name is Usha, so when I read that in the script, I was like, spooky!” Mani told TheWrap, referencing Sarita Choudhury’s character, who plays Mani’s mother in the film. She explained that her connection to India became ingrained in her from a very early age, living in a south Indian household in Tennessee. She was made aware of the religion and customs through her parents and letters from her cousins who still lived in India.
“I definitely grew up with the concept of Evil Eye and reincarnation and the idea that family members or my mom would check charts and astrological signs, that’s huge in conversation and something that...

Amazon Studios upcoming film Evil Eye is set to take audiences on a wild ride of twists and turns. Starring Sarita Choudhury, Sunita Mani, Omar Maskati and Bernard White, the chilling, psychological thriller Evil Eye is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now.

Any story can be a horror story with just the right twist. Such is the apparent thrust of filmmaking brothers Elan Dassani and Rajeev Dassani’s “Evil Eye,” which Shekar, who also wrote the screenplay for this latest entry into Blumhouse and Amazon’s burgeoning streaming film series, first presented the story of mother-daughter Usha and Pallavi through a series of phone calls and voicemails, all the better to build on their bond and then explode it outward into something very different. That idea doesn’t quite work in the cinematic adaptation, which tries to inject the story’s supernatural element too early — all the better to set up the film as a thriller worthy of the Blumhouse label — and robs it of the source material’s cleverness in the process.
It’s a strange pickle, to be sure. The film’s greatest strength — that it tackles a culturally specific storyline with care and respect,...

To celebrate the release of Welcome to Blumhouse, the new collection of films from Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions, we sat down with the cast of Evil Eye, one of the four features set for release this month.
We chatted with Sarita Choudhury, Sunita Mani, and Omar Maskati about the new film, itself based on the audio play by Madhuri Shekar and tells the story of a seemingly perfect romance between Pallavi (Mani) and Sandeep (Maskati) turns into a nightmare when a mother (Choudhury) becomes convinced her daughter’s new boyfriend has a dark connection to her own past. A dark, tense, and psychological film, the cast told us about their reactions to the script, which read more like a John Cassavettes film than a horror, the relationships between them, and how they envisage audiences reacting to the story.

In another timeline, Sunita Mani is dashing between red-carpet premieres, celebrating her status as the next big thing with leading roles in a pair of fall releases. In 2020, the newly minted star of “Save Yourselves” had just finished the virtual junket for the Bleecker Street comedy when she spoke to IndieWire, going for a well-deserved walk after being cooped up and staring at a computer all day. A couple of weeks later, she’ll be back at it for “Evil Eye,” a new film from horror powerhouse Blumhouse on Amazon.
The titles are very different, but Mani has embraced disparate roles from the start. She made her feature debut with a supporting part in an incest drama dedicated to Éric Rohmer, Dan Sallitt’s “The Unspeakable Act.” Two years later, she danced feverishly to great comic effect in The Daniels’ high-energy music video for Lil Jon’s hit “Turn Down...
