It’s been a funny year, one that started with Omicron stealing headlines (doesn’t that feel a while ago) and ended with strike action and snow causing disruption to the masses and a strange Qatar World Cup concluding with a cracking final, while Britain gets used to its third Prime Minister in the space of 12 months. In between, viewers were enchanted by dancers, singers, bomb disposal experts and a former Health Secretary eating camel penis. Here, Deadline unveils the most-watched UK TV shows of the year (excluding sport) according to 7-day-post-launch Barb data from overnights.tv, while rounding up the most-watched World Cup games at the bottom. Read on.

Strictly Come Dancing is one of the biggest shows on TV – but do the celebrities get paid to take part?
Unlike other reality shows, including I’m a Celebrity, each star who signs up to Strictly is given the same flat fee to appear and is unable to negotiate with producers.
According to a 2021 report in The Sun, every celebrity receives £25,000 just to appear.
It turns out there’s more incentive to remain in the competition until the very end – not only could you win the honour of taking home the Glitterball trophy, but fees are said to rise to £40,000 if you make it to the end of October.
Last year’s final few – EastEnders’ Rose Ayling-Ellis, BBC Breakfast’s Dan Walker, Great British Bake Off star John Whaite, Cbbc’s Rhys Stephenson and TV personality Aj Odudu – reportedly made £60,000 for getting to the quarter-finals.
Contestants reportedly earn another £15,000 if they get to the semi-finals,...

We are only on episode three of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK vs The World and already we have had some very controversial eliminations. The first to go in this season was the icon that is Lemon whose act in the talent show, while we have seen similar acts before, showcase incredible dancing abilities and wonderful leaping splits off of a set of stairs. Next Cheryl Hole was told to sashay away after a design challenge where she was clearly not the worst in the lineup. However, recently Cheryl was doing a gig in G-a-y London where she was joined on stage by none other than Adele (who hilariously pole danced for the audience) who then sang the praises of Cheryl and talked about how she shouldn’t have gone home this early in the competition so I suppose every cloud has a silver lining! If you haven’t...

After a 2020 dedicated to being stuck in our living rooms, things vaguely started returning to normal in 2021 (don’t mention the ‘O’ word) and there was plenty of time for breakout hits and established ratings giants.
Here, Deadline takes you through the five most-watched TV episodes of the year in the UK (excluding news and sports), with consolidated seven-day Barb ratings data supplied by overnights.tv. While drama and mainstream entertainment dominate as ever, there is also an appearance for that royal interview. Read on.
Line of Duty – 15.2M (BBC1 – Sunday May 2)
It may have been the most hotly-anticipated TV drama of the decade. The sixth-season finale of Jed Mercurio’s police thriller epic was admittedly met with a mixed reception from critics and viewers alike but the show had been watched by around one-quarter of the British population by the following weekend, guaranteeing it first place in the most-watched list.

Dust off your sequins and feathers because BBC’s “Strictly Come Dancing” has revealed the first celebrity contestants for this year’s two-step extravaganza.
Among the first names to be revealed are comedian Robert Webb, best known as one-half of “Peep Show” double act Mitchell and Webb, and McFly singer Tom Fletcher.
“Big Brother’s Bit on the Side” presenter Aj Odudu is also set to twirl under the disco-ball alongside “Great British Bake-Off” winner John Whaite, who will make history by competing as part of the show’s first-ever all-male partnership.
“I’m so grateful, excited, and nervous to be joining the Strictly 2021 family,” Whaite said. “I’ve been wearing sequins and jazzy attire since I was three years old and can’t wait to hurl myself, full throttle, around the most glamorous dance floor on earth. Look, we are not opposed to boxed mac and cheese. It’s cheap, easy, and you are lying to yourself if you say it doesn’t taste good.
All we’re saying is it’s actually just as easy to make it from scratch.
