“Emily in Paris” Season 5? Not so fast.
During the amfAR Gala at the Cannes Film Festival, which raises money for research to end HIV and AIDS, Winnie Harlow and Paris Jackson appeared onstage to auction off a walk-on role in a previously unannounced fifth season of the Netflix series. The winner of the auction shelled out €250,000 to appear in the series as well as the chance to attend the Season 4 premiere in Los Angeles. Harlow and Jackson also said that Season 5 of the popular series is scheduled to begin shooting in mid 2025.
However, an individual with knowledge of the situation says that Netflix has not in fact greenlit another season of “Emily in Paris.” According to the official amfAR auction website, the walk-on role came “Courtesy of Darren Star,” the creator of the series. For crisp tension or thematic clarity, nothing in “The Balconettes” quite outdoes the nearly self-contained, minutes-long short that opens actor-director Noémie Merlant’s frenzied, heatstruck genre mashup. On a 115-degree summer afternoon in a wilting, AC-challenged Marseilles apartment block, a put-upon middle-aged wife passes out on her balcony. Roused with a splash of water by her boorish husband, who demands she get back to her chores, the poor woman breaks: Getting to her feet, she whacks him unconscious with a steel dustpan, smothers him with a towel, and sits on him for good measure until all life seeps out of his body. With not a scrap of backstory required, this immensely satisfying vignette earns the film an early round of cheers.
That’s the last we see of this character’s plight, save for a brief shot later of her being led away from the building by police. (Cue some...

Noemie Merlant, best known beyond France for her performances in Celine Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Todd Field’s Tár, made her debut as a writer-director-actor a few years back with Mi Iubita, mon amour, which starts with a bachelorette party. Merlant offers up another female-solidarity story in the shape of The Balconettes (Les femmes au balcon), a comedy with a very dark streak or a giggly drama depending on how you look at it.
Given at one point that a writer character in the film rejects the supposed rules of storytelling, which require clear acts and so forth, Merlant obviously knows she’s taking risks with a free-form, genre-bending structure, and that’s cool. It’s just a shame that the end product is so loosey-goosey it’s less a bold sui generis experiment than a hot mess.

Ghost story, body horror, feminist comedy and a freshly minted edition of that very French subgenre, How to Get Rid of a Troublesome Corpse: Noémie Merlant, familiar as a fine actress from Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire, packs a good deal into her sophomore feature as director, The Balconettes. The message is essentially Time’s Up, maxxed out to include revenge killings; the medium is Mediterranean color. Sciamma co-wrote the script with Merlant, which may come as a surprise given that this swirl of blood and wackiness, complete with a running gag about a severed penis, is about as far from the restraint of Sciamma’s own films as could be.

It’s one of those perfect Cannes mornings. The sun is shining, there’s a slight breeze off the sea and the streets are not yet stuffed with pedestrians hustling towards screenings or official festival business. Lucas Bravo matches the city’s calm energy when he emerges from a back room of an airy second-floor apartment just a stone’s throw from the Croisette. He takes a seat on the sofa opposite The Hollywood Reporter for what will be his first conversation about his Cannes Film Festival selection, The Balconettes.
Writer, filmmaker and actress Noémi Merlant, known for Portrait of a Lady on Fire, directed Balconettes, which centers on a Marseille neighborhood during a summer heat wave. Three roommates gleefully meddle in the lives of their neighbors from their balcony until a late-night drink turns into a bloody affair. Noémie Merlant’s star is rising as an actress. Baby Ruby and Tár won her international recognition across 2022 and 2023, while anticipation is growing around her starring role in Audrey Diwan’s English-language reboot of erotica classic Emmanuelle. In the meantime, Merlant is hitting Cannes with The Balconettes, her second film in the director’s chair after Mi iubita, mon amour. Set against a Marseille heatwave, the riotous comedy and gorefest co-stars Merlant alongside Souheila Yacoub and Sanda Codreanu as female flatmates who are pushed to the brink when a late-night drink with an attractive neighbor (played by Emily in Paris actor Lucas Bravo) takes a bloody turn.
Deadline: What was the inspiration for Les Balconettes?
NOÉMIE Merlant: Four, five years ago I fled my home in a sort of escape from something that was suffocating me. I sought refuge with two girlfriends who were living together and stayed for several months.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival may be lighter on glitz and glamour than in years past, but that means arthouse and international fare from emerging and established filmmakers will get a chance to shine. Still, at least two American auteurs, Francis Ford Coppola (“Megalopolis”) and Paul Schrader, have films in the main competition for the first time in decades. David Cronenberg (“The Shrouds”) and Yorgos Lanthimos (“Kinds of Kindness”) are also back at the festival, with both making personal stories in their own way: Cronenberg, here, reckons with grief over the death of his wife seven years ago, while Lanthimos appears to retreat back into “Dogtooth” territory in a film that’s almost a rebuke of the global success he’s acquired with “Poor Things” and “The Favourite.”
Sean Baker, Andrea Arnold, Ali Abbasi, Jia Zhangke, Karim Aïnouz, and Paolo Sorrentino are also back at Cannes this year with new films in the competition.

“Trauma bangs” are gone. Emily in Paris star Lily Collins confirmed on Instagram today that the cast of the popular Netflix comedy series have reconvened in Paris to begin production on the strike-delayed Season 4. Posing with the script for Episode 401, Collins revealed a hairstyle that harkens back to the first two seasons. In Episode 301, Emily famously chopped off her hair for what her Bff Mindy (Ashley Park) called “trauma bangs.” (You can watch the official Emily’s Trauma Bangs video below.) Emily sported the bangs for the entire season.
In her post, Collins referenced the long delay for Season 4, which was supposed to start filming last summer but was pushed to January by the WGA and the SAG-AFTRA strikes.
“Did someone say Saison Quatre?!”, Collins wrote in the caption, alongside a photo of herself with the first episode script. “Finally reunited with my @emilyinparis fam back in Paris and it feels so good.

"Emily in Paris" season four is still on the way, though it could be a while before it premieres. Filming for the next installment of our favorite Paris-based squad has been delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but Variety reported on Sept. 29 that the show is expected to start shooting in January. Time is really of the essence.
From June 2024 through that September, all shoots in Paris are barred while the Olympic Games take place, plus access to key areas in the French capital could be restricted as early as March. Production has also already been forced to switch studios. With shooting locations becoming more competitive due to the smaller shooting time frame, it'll be a frantic few months for the "Emily in Paris" crew. But we have faith they'll make it work (please!). Series star Lily Collins spilled a few details about season four in a video...

A highlight of the first weekend of the 80th Venice International Film Festival was seeing Giorgio Armani appear on the catwalk, visibly excited, moved, smiling and proudly satisfied with his work. He then advanced graceful and happy, in his impeccable blue tuxedo holding hands with the model Agnese Zogla.
The moment was experienced by the more than 500 guests at Armani’s One Night Only event, where the world of cinema flocked to pay homage to King Giorgio, with guests including Sophia Loren, who has always been his beloved friend, accompanied by her son Edoardo Ponti, actor Benicio Del Toro, actress Jessica Chastain, and directors Ang Lee, Gabriele Salvatores and Giuseppe Tornatore.
The standing ovation lasted several minutes from an audience composed of numerous couples from the Italian film star system: from Sergio Castellitto and Margaret Mazzantini and Pierfrancesco Favino and Anna Ferzetti to Raul Bova and Rocio Munoz Morales to Kasia Smutniak and Domenico Procacci.

After teaming with the French filmmaker with The Mad Women’s Ball (Le bal des folles) a TIFF selection in 2021, Amazon Prime Video France will back Sulak – Melanie Laurent‘s next feature film. Produced by Pitchipoï Productions’ Alain Goldman, production begins this summer in Paris and southern France this summer. Screen Daily reports that Lucas Bravo takes the lead role. Laurent is coming off the crime caper Voleuses – which starred herself, Adèle Exarchopoulos and Isabelle Adjani. That filmed is slated for a November release via Netflix – which means that too could land at TIFF just prior.
Co-written by Laurent with regular writing partner Christophe Deslandes, this tells the story of Bruno Sulak, a notorious real-life French criminal known for his non-violent heists on multiple jewelry stores in the 1980s.…...

“Challengers”, the anticipated tennis drama starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and “West Side Story”’s Mike Faist, will skip out on a French theatrical release and premiere on Prime Video instead.
The streamer announced the move on Monday during an upscale press event held at the Pavillon Royal on the outskirts of Paris.
Prime Video’s country managing director for France, Brigitte Ricou-Bellan, stated that the decision was made in lieu of France’s strict windowing rules, which prevents streamers from making a new film available on their services until 15 to 17 months after its theatrical roll out.

“We’re a strong partner for French cinema and well-established talent. We contribute to the National Film Board’s subsidy scheme, but streaming services have been incited to not opt for theatrical releases for our original films,” Ricou-Bellan told journalists, as per Variety.

While unveiling its slate of new French originals and acquisitions on Monday, Prime Video announced that it would skip a French theatrical release for “Challengers,” Luca Guadagnino’s anticipated tennis drama. The film, which stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and “West Side Story” star Mike Faist, will still be released in theaters in all other territories.
During a posh press event hosted at the Pavillon Royal on the outskirts of Paris, Brigitte Ricou-Bellan, Prime Video’s country managing director for France, said the strategic move by the Amazon streamer resulted from France’s notoriously strict windowing rules, which demands streamers to wait 15 to 17 months after a theatrical roll out before making a new film available on their services. The rule has led other studios to opt to skip French cinemas for new releases before, such as Disney’s decision to debut “Strange World” on streaming.

The immense success of the Netflix series “Emily in Paris” has transformed a quiet, untouched square in the French capital into a tourist magnet.
In the historic Latin Quarter and just a short walk from the magnificent, domed Pantheon, tucked so deeply away that you could easily miss it, lies the Place de l’Estrapade. For diehard, beret-wearing fans of the show, this sliver of a neighborhood has become a landmark of its own.
That’s because this is where the fictional character Emily Cooper, a 20-something American portrayed by Lily Collins, lives, dines and savors French pastries from the local bakery.
The newfound attention can be disruptive for the real people who live and work here, but the show is also igniting a new passion for Paris — and even anti-Emily graffiti has become part of the attraction.

David Beckham was on daddy duty at Paris Fashion Week. The 47-year-old retired soccer star brought along his 17-year-old son, Cruz Beckham, to the Dior Homme show on Jan. 20. The dapper father-son duo sat in the front row next to the likes of Eddie Redmayne, Karlie Kloss, Gwendoline Christie, and Robert Pattinson.
David and Cruz both wore suits, albeit different iterations: the elder Beckham wore a brown slim-fit suit and patent-leather shoes, while his son wore his gray oversize outfit with sneakers. Prior to arriving at the runway show, David shared a photo of himself and Cruz posing at their hotel. "Dad & Son," the caption read. Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from Season 3 of “Emily in Paris.”
The process of designing the costumes for Season 3 of “Emily in Paris” started with a bang.
Or rather, with bangs. Lily Collins, who plays the Netflix dramedy’s title role, first cut some fringe into her hair in her own life before the look made its way into the show. Attempting to turn over a new leaf after the dilemmas created by the Season 2 finale, Season 3 begins with Emily feeling manic and grabbing a pair of scissors — an ordeal that costume designer Marilyn Fitoussi found inspiring.
“Everything starts with Lily’s bangs. She sent me a picture, and suddenly, it reminded me of French icons of the ’60s,” Fitoussi says. “New wave movies. You have Jean-Luc Godard, you have Brigitte Bardot, you have Jane Birkin — all these delicate, graceful silhouettes.” I said, ‘Jesus, she looks like Françoise Hardy!

Spoiler alert: The following article discusses the entirety of “Emily in Paris” Season 3.
Just when you thought the ship of Emily (Lily Collins) and Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) had officially sailed — I mean, we were bearing witness to the latter’s impromptu wedding to Camille (Camille Razat) — an anchor is let down: Camille, still reeling from the intensity of her relationship with free-spirited artist Sofia (Melia Kreiling), calls it all off, but not before declaring the reason for doing so is Gabriel’s buried feelings for Emily. With everyone shaken, Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) also storms out, saying he will not be a second choice. And last, but certainly not least, Gabriel and Emily reconnect, finally open about their desires, as the former declares that Camille is pregnant.

With everyone shaken, Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) also storms out, saying he will not be a second choice. And last, but certainly not least, Gabriel and Emily reconnect, finally open about their desires, as the former declares that Camille is pregnant.

Spoiler alert: Article contains major spoilers for “Emily in Paris” season 3.
“Emily in Paris” creator/executive producer Darren Star discusses some of the big season 3 storylines, as well as some of the backlash the show has faced in the past in a new interview with Deadline.
Reporter Nellie Andreeva brings up that Ukrainian immigrant storyline in season 2 in the candid chat, which saw Petra, played by Daria Panchenko, meet lead character Emily (played by Lily Collins) in French class before they went shopping together and she stole an array of expensive items.
The episode faced criticism when it was shown earlier this year, with Star now saying: “Can I say one little thing about that? We cast this actress and just asked her, where are you from? She said Kyiv, so we made her Ukrainian.
“It wasn’t written like, she has to be Ukrainian; it was written as anywhere,...

It took a moment for me to recognize Lucas Bravo in the movie “Ticket to Paradise.”
On Netflix’s “Emily in Paris,” Bravo plays Gabriel; the criminally handsome, criminally French neighbor of the titular Emily (Lily Collins), a French chef in France who speaks French and who is set up as Emily’s endgame from Season 1, Episode 1. He is kind and attractive (and French), the diet version of better romantic heroes, but not a particularly compelling or entertaining character — but it turns out Bravo has the capacity for both.
In “Ticket to Paradise,” Bravo plays easily the wildest part of an already wild film. Acrimonious divorcees David (George Clooney) and Georgia (Julie Roberts) reunite in Bali on a mission to stop their daughter from an impulsive marriage, and Bravo plays Georgia’s besotted young paramour. The character still lacks dimension, arguably, but in a way that bolsters his entertainment value...
