No one would fault Glenn Weiss for heading straight home after the 95th Academy Awards telecast.
The live TV veteran and his White Cherry Entertainment partner Ricky Kirshner teamed to executive produce Sunday’s Oscars, with Weiss taking on the additional role of directing, for an eighth consecutive year. Needless to say, he had his work cut out for him on Hollywood’s biggest night, and the reviews have largely been glowing so far for the telecast’s return to form as celebration of cinema. But Weiss seemed to have a little left in the tank as The Hollywood Reporter spotted him weaving his way through a crowded afterparty alongside wife Jan Svendsen.
He granted a request for a brief interview during which he shared praise for host Jimmy Kimmel and how he kept the show moving, that stripped-down performance from Oscar winner Lady Gaga and how he’s feeling...

The Directors Guild of America revealed its winners for the 2023 DGA Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles Saturday night, with Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan taking home the top prize for Everything Everywhere All at Once.
To kick off the ceremony, Lesli Linka Glatter, the DGA’s president, offered welcome remarks before introducing host Judd Apatow, who has previously hosted the annual show three times.
During his opening monologue, the comedian delivered some punches, mocking the fact that the show was only being livestreamed “to the back of this room. This show is so irrelevant, it’s shocking Elon Musk hasn’t bought it yet.” His joke about “honoring the directors who didn’t feel a need to make a Pinocchio movie this year” received a big reaction from the audience, and he also nodded to the fact that there were no female filmmakers nominated in the top director category this year.

Glenn Weiss has said “yes.” The Emmy-winning live events helmer is back to direct the 94th Oscars for ABC. Ceremony producer Will Packer announced Weiss’ return on Tuesday morning.
“You need someone with the deep technical knowledge and creative insights of Glenn to create an Oscars show that truly celebrates a global love of film. I’m fortunate to be working with him,” Packer said.
Weiss returns from last year’s Academy Awards, which he also directed. Actually, it’s the seventh consecutive time for Weiss, who has directed six previous Oscars shows — for which he won two Primetime Emmys. Weiss also has directed 20 Tony Awards shows, which earned him three directing Primetime Emmys. He also has won eight DGA Awards for his work on the Oscars and the Tonys. Outside of the industry, he may be best known for the year he proposed to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen, while...

Television and live events veteran Glenn Weiss will return to direct the 93rd Academy Awards.
“Our plan is that this year’s Oscars will look like a movie, not a television show, and Glenn has embraced this approach and come up with ideas of his own on how to achieve this. We’re thrilled to have him as part of the brain trust,” said show producers Jesse Collins, Stacey Sher and Steven Soderbergh.
Weiss has directed five previous Oscar ceremonies, two of which earned him Primetime Emmys. He famously proposed to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen, while taking the stage to accept his award at the 70th Primetime Emmys in 2018, giving her a ring that belonged to his late mother, who had passed away two weeks prior.
In addition to the Oscars, Weiss has also helmed 19 Tony Awards ceremonies, which earned him three Emmys. Some of his other directing credits include The Kennedy Center Honors,...

Donna Gigliotti will produce the 91st Oscars telecast, with Glenn Weiss co-producing and directing the show.
The Academy Awards will air live on ABC on Feb. 24, 2019, from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center.
“Donna and Glenn will infuse new energy and vision into this 91st awards presentation, and we are excited about a broad-based creative relationship with these two artists,” Academy president John Bailey said on Monday.
Gigliotti won a best picture Academy Award as one of the producers of 1998’s “Shakespeare in Love.” She’s been nominated in the category for “The Reader,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” and “Hidden Figures.” Her other producing credits include “Beasts of No Nation,” “Two Lovers,” “The Good Night,” and “Emma.”

Outside of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” doing its best to sweep the comedy awards, the 70th annual Emmy Awards seemed determined to surprise prognosticators. Several winners, including Bill Hader of “Barry” for actor in a comedy series and Regina King of “Seven Seconds” for actress in a limited series were genuinely shocked to end up onstage with a statue in their hands, having gone up against such stiff competition that few predicted their victories. Even the highly anticipated conclusion of the Netflix versus HBO showdown ended in a draw, with both the streaming giant and premium cable favorite each ending the night with 23 wins apiece.

Jimmy Kimmel is nothing if not a true romantic. The late-night host supported love in all its glory Tuesday night when he invited Glenn Weiss, “The Oscars” director who proposed at the Emmys, and his future bride, Jan Svendsen, onto “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to have a chat with him — from their bed.
Ok, it was a set, but the late-night host feigned shock when he saw the two lovebirds sipping glasses of champagne in their PJs. Kimmel told Weiss, “no offense, but I never guessed that the Emmy winner that I would be most interested in talking to after the show would be you! I mean it’s really remarkable, you stole the show last night.”
During his acceptance speech for Outstanding Directing of a Variety Special for “The Oscars” Monday night, Weiss proposed to Svendsen, who was in the audience.

Socially speaking, there was no surprise about that surprise wedding proposal during last night’s Emmy Awards broadcast: Glenn Weiss’ romantic gesture on stage was Facebook’s top social moment during the broadcast, just as it was on Twitter.
And as of today, the “Epic Emmys Proposal” Facebook page had nearly 620,000 views. Weiss had just won the Emmy for directing the Oscar broadcast.
According to a Facebook spokesperson, the runners-up to Weiss’ proposal to girlfriend Jan Svendsen were, in order, HBO’s Game of Thrones winning Outstanding Drama Series; Westworld’s Thandie Newton winning Supporting Actress in a Drama Series; Regina King winning Lead Actress in a Limited Series for Netflix’s Seven Seconds; and Ryan Murphy’s acceptance speech after winning Outstanding Limited Series for FX’s American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace.

We've come to expect the unexpected during award shows, but on Monday's Emmy Awards broadcast, the unexpected turned out to be something incredibly heartwarming. Glenn Weiss, the winner for directing a variety/special (for directing the 2018 Oscars broadcast), gave an acceptance speech that included shout-outs to his late mother and his longtime girlfriend - touching but pretty standard stuff for award winners. But his acceptance speech soon took a turn for the adorable when he called his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen, up to the stage and proposed to her!
Unless you're a hardcore film buff, there's a pretty good chance you've never seen Svendsen or Weiss until Monday night, so get to know the couple behind the evening's most unexpected moment.

If the Emmys gave out a trophy for the most romantic gesture of the year, then director Glenn Weiss would have two statuettes for his mantel after his moving onstage proposal to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen. The moment brought the crowd to their feet and a tear to many viewers' eyes (if Twitter is any indication). But did Weiss just pull off the first award show proposal? It was definitely an Emmy first, but it seems there's been at least one other couple who got engaged in front of a Hollywood audience.

Emmys night contained plenty of highs and lows for everyone, as there were plenty of disappointments scattered throughout the night of big wins for HBO, Amazon, and FX. Watching from backstage at the Microsoft Theater, plenty of those featured shared their candid thoughts about what victory meant to them, while also revealing key bits of backstory behind the wins.
Winner: “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
“Let the backlash begin!” executive producer Dan Palladino joked as the “Maisel” team came backstage, having won nearly every award it was up for Monday night, including history-making Outstanding Writing and Directing wins for Amy Sherman-Palladino.
Production on Season 2 has wrapped, and both Palladino and Sherman-Palladino pledged that it’ll premiere on Amazon Prime before the end of 2018. While juggling her many statues, she reflected on how growing up listening to her father’s stories about the New York stand-up comedy scene was the initial inspiration for the show.

The 70th Primetime Emmys are finished, with “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Game of Thrones” taking home the big wins (you can read the full list here).
But the ceremony is a giant production, and TV viewers only get to see a glimpse of the whole shebang. Here are some moments that weren’t featured on TV that TheWrap witnessed firsthand at the Los Angeles ceremony.
1. Besides the Red Carpet, the place to be before the show is the lobby of the J.W. Marriott
While most people were walking the red carpet on a very hot Los Angeles afternoon, the place to relax and cool off before the show was the lobby of the J.W. Marriott, next door to the Microsoft Theater. The room was packed with attendees hanging out in their fancy attire, swinging back drinks and standing in line to take pictures with a giant Emmy statue.

Who knew that Emmy voters were such softies?
The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards was supposed to be “Game of Thrones” v. “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” v. “Atlanta” — but from the first award of the night, which handed Henry Winkler his first Emmy after four decades in television, voters turned it into a feel-good, four-hankie affair.
So Winkler won for “Barry.” And “The Americans,” long acclaimed but just as long ignored by Television Academy voters, got two shiny parting gifts in the form of Emmys for star Matthew Rhys and writer/creators Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg for the series’ final season. And Claire Foy scored an upset victory for “The Crown,” which will have a new actress playing an older Queen Elizabeth next year.

Turns out going with two hosts instead of one did not double the fun at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards tonight. Fronted by Saturday Night Live’s Michael Che and Colin Jost and executive produced by Lorne Michaels, this year’s celebration of television’s best and brightest quickly became mired in some of the worst tendencies of the long-running weekly variety show.

Oscars director Glenn Weiss had a pretty good idea that he’d win Monday night at the Emmys since he usually wins in the Variety Directing category. He bet on that with an out-of-blue proposal to his longtime girlfriend Jan Svendsen from the stage that took everyone by surprise. Svendsen

Svendsen hadn’t suspected a thing, and neither did the Emmys director Hamish Hamilton, whom Weiss credits for acting quickly and finding Svendsen in the audience. “He took the cue, he was right on the spot,” said Weiss. “And thank you for not playing us off.

Best: Sandra Oh as a presenter

Director and producer Glenn Weiss has walked across Emmy Awards stage 11 times in his career. But number 12 will undoubtedly be the most memorable. After winning Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special for the Oscars, Weiss turned his own acceptance speech into a marriage proposal.
“You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend?” Weiss said, looking at his teary-eyed girlfriend Jan Svendsen. “Because I want to call you my wife.” The crowd erupted in applause. Everyone from Benedict Cumberbatch to Leslie Jones was caught on camera wide-eyed and smiling with surprise.

Before Monday night, Glenn Weiss had already taken home 14 Emmys. So you couldn’t blame him for wanting to change up his acceptance speech a little bit.
The Oscars director, who was awarded an Emmy for Directing for a Variety Special at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards, used his time on stage to propose to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen, who sat in the audience.
After thanking his children and co-workers, he said:
“I’m really grateful to be here, but it’s bittersweet. The person most proud at this moment would be my mom, but she passed away just two weeks ago.

Glenn Weiss not only won the Emmy for outstanding directing for a variety special, but he also proposed to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen — a first in Primetime Emmy Awards history.
At the start of his speech, he thanked his daughters and friends at ABC as he won for directing the Oscars ceremony.
He then began to speak about his mother, who died just two weeks ago. “Part of my heart is broken. I don’t think it will ever be repaired. But she’s in me and she always will be.”
Weiss noted how his mother always believed in “finding the sunshine,” leading him to denote Svensen as “the sunshine in my life.” He continued: “And Mom was right, don’t ever let go of your sunshine. You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife.”

Glenn Weiss, the director of the 90th Academy Awards, won the Emmy for outstanding direction of a variety special, and he used his brief time at the podium accepting his award to propose to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen. “You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend, because I want to call you my wife,” Weiss said, as the crowd in attendance at the Emmys got up on their feet in roaring applause.
Weiss has won 14 Emmy awards, and now has back-to-back trophies for directing the Academy Awards. He won in 2017 for directing the 89th Academy Awards. The director has also won Emmys for filming awards ceremonies such as the Tony Awards. Weiss was favored to win given his amazing Emmys track record, so he probably knew he had a shot at executing one of the best marriage proposals in recent television history.
