In episode four of "The Girl From Plainville," Michelle Carter (Elle Fanning) is reeling from news that she's been indicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter in the death of her boyfriend Conrad Roy (Colton Ryan). She walks the neighborhood, listening to the "Glee" cast album in her headphones, when she imagines that Conrad is there, dressed in a varsity jacket just like Finn on "Glee." Suddenly, her clothes change into a very Rachel Berry-like outfit. They turn the song, "I Can't Fight This Feeling," into a duet, singing and dancing together in the middle of the street. When the song ends, Conrad disappears and Michelle snaps back to reality.

For Elle Fanning to prepare to play Michelle Clark, there were hours of tape to watch. That was not the case for Colton Ryan, who was cast as Conrad “Coco” Roy III in Hulu’s upcoming drama “The Girl From Plainville.” With limited content of the late teen, who died by suicide in 2014, Ryan took a different approach.
First, he read the scripts for the show and instantly connected to Roy — so much that he tells Variety he didn’t merely “want” to do the role, he had a “profound need” to take it.
“I didn’t realize until after we wrapped how essentially important it would be to me, not just as an artist, but as Colton. When I first started researching, they sent us a whole Dropbox, the research and the court documents and timelines,” he says. “But I immediately went to the pictures, and the first picture...

Luca Guadagnino has set himself quite an ensemble for his next film with Zendaya set and Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist in final negotiation to star in Challengers. MGM recently acquired rights to the package with Amy Pascal, Guadagnino, Zendaya and Rachel O’Connor of Pascal Pictures producing. Justin Kuritzkes penned the script.
The story follows Tashi, a tennis player-turned-coach who has taken her husband, Art, and transformed him from a mediocre player into a world-famous Grand Slam champion. To jolt him out of his recent losing streak, she makes him play a “Challenger” event — close to the lowest level of tournament on the pro tour — where he finds himself standing across the net from the once-promising, now burnt-out Patrick: his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend.

Ever since Steven Spielberg’s magical adaptation of “West Side Story” first started screening last November, Mike Faist has slowly been gaining momentum for his charismatic, scene-stealing turn as Jets leader Riff. Critics were quick to single out Faist’s performance in the film’s already rave reviews. “A twitchy, wiry delight” hailed Robbie Collin of The Telegraph. “His dancing has a caffeinated, angular beauty”, wrote Stephanie Zacharek of Time Magazine. David Sims of The Atlantic concluded, “Faist’s sinewy, charged work as Riff is a real revelation”.
Critics groups quickly caught onto the buzz. Of the 20 regional circles that have chimed in since “West Side Story” started screening, Faist has received 10 nominations and nabbed a 3rd place prize at the National Society of Film Critics and a win at the Phoenix Critics Circle.

To celebrate both the cinema and upcoming home entertainment release of West Side Story, we had the pleasure of chatting with star Mike Faist about bringing Steven Spielberg’s long-mooted passion project to life.
Directed by Academy Award® winner Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award® winner Tony Kushner, “West Side Story” tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City. This reimagining of the beloved musical stars Ansel Elgort (Tony); Rachel Zegler (María); Ariana DeBose (Anita); David Alvarez (Bernardo); Mike Faist (Riff); Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino); Ana Isabelle (Rosalía); Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank); Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke); and Rita Moreno.

During the climactic rumble in “West Side Story,” Riff (Mike Faist) spins away from Tony (Ansel Elgort) and right into the knife held by Bernardo (David Alvarez). Everyone is frozen in shock as Riff turns back towards Tony, his face crumpled, looking younger than ever, tears welling up in his eyes. “It’s Ok, it’s Ok,” he tells his Bff. No one would question it if we got an agonizing slow death right then, but instead, Riff smiles, his face morphs into chilling clarity — dead eyes right before he’s about to drop dead — and he coolly (no pun intended) orders Tony to “take it out.” It’s a heart-stopping, devastating beat, played to perfection by Faist, who deserves some Oscar love for putting a new twist on an old character we all thought we knew.

Saturday Am Update: Refresh for chart and more analysis As predicted, Disney-Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings refused to be slow down, firmly holding No. 1 with a $3.6M Friday, which alone makes the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed feature the highest grossing title during the pandemic ahead of Black Widow with $186.7M running total. By the end of tomorrow, Shang-Chi will make close to $12.8M, a great -41% hold, and a running total of $196M. What’s Shang-Chi‘s ultimate domestic endgame? Just under $250M seems quite conceivable.
According to box office analytics corp EntTelligence, Shang-Chi saw 19% of its patrons attending after 9Pm on Friday and near 16% showing up before 3Pm.
Meanwhile, Universal’s Dear Evan Hansen, arguably the most prolific major studio release on the fall schedule since Shang-Chi, is not doing well after a $3.3M Friday, including $800K Thursday previews, on its way to $7.3M in the No.

This review of “Dear Evan Hansen” was first published after the film’s September 9, 2021, premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
Is there something about getting through 2020 and the first eight months of 2021 that makes people want to sing and dance? You’d think so from the movies, which this year will include Steven Spielberg’s new version of “West Side Story,” Leos Carax’s wacko Sparks musical “Annette,” Christopher Ashley’s version of “Come From Away,” Jon Chu’s version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights,” Miranda’s version of Jonathan Larson’s “tick, tick … Boom!” and Stephen Chbosky’s “Dear Evan Hansen,” which opened the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival.

Five years and one pandemic lockdown after “Dear Evan Hansen” opened to acclaim on Broadway, the popular musical is finally ready to shine on the big screen.
Given the prolonged period of solitude during Covid-19, and the reality that we’re still living in plague times, the cast and director of the movie believes “Dear Evan Hansen” will take on more resonance with audiences.
“We’ve all been through this horrible ordeal, and it is ongoing. But [‘Dear Evan Hansen’] is something that talks directly to the isolation,” says the film’s director Stephen Chbosky.
Based on the Tony-winning musical, “Dear Evan Hansen” centers on an anxious high school student, whose therapist recommends he write affirming letters to himself to help alleviate his crippling social anxiety. The harmless exercise soon becomes a catalyst for tragedy when a bullying classmate named Connor Murphy steals one of Evan’s self-addressed notes and later dies by suicide.

And a week later we’re back in the messy, stress-filled, anxiety-inducing halls of high school in this new film. Oh, this has songs too, since it’s also based on a musical produced for the stage. But that may be where the similarities end. Everybody’S Talking About Jaimie is set in the UK, Sheffield specifically, with a lead character who’s fairly happy, though he yearns to follow his drag diva dreams. Across the pond, in the US in an unnamed sunny suburb, this title character doesn’t really have such long-term goals. He’s just trying to “push on” while remaining essentially invisible to his classmates. Oh, and this tale tackles life and death issues, really. Plus it was a big Tony winner back in 2015. Musical theater aficionados, Sept. 24 is going to be a good day and here’s why: Universal is debuting the movie adaptation of “Dear Evan Hansen” in theaters.
Ben Platt is reprising his Tony-winning role as the title character in “Dear Evan Hansen,” a cinematic retelling of the popular Broadway musical created by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
