Plot: Wendy Darling, a young girl afraid to leave her childhood home behind, meets Peter Pan, a boy who refuses to grow up. Alongside her brothers and a tiny fairy, Tinker Bell, she travels with Peter to the magical world of Neverland. There, she encounters the evil pirate Captain Hook and embarks on a thrilling and dangerous adventure that will change her life forever.
Review: In their seemingly neverending quest to refresh their animated IP with live-action remakes, Disney thought they would find luck by bringing auteur David Lowery back after his updated take of Pete’s Dragon to tackle a new Peter Pan feature film. Where Lowery imbued Pete’s Dragon, a less familiar title in the overall Disney canon, with realistic characters and emotionally grounded storytelling, his Peter Pan & Wendy is a rote remake that sticks pretty close to the 1953 original. While the more problematic elements from the classic animated film have been replaced,...

Peter Pan & Wendy, David Lowery’s humanizing interpretation of J.M. Barrie’s existential classic about the boy who refuses to grow up, speaks more to the inner child of jaded adults than it does to actual kids. This version of the fairytale grounds the fundamental wistfulness of the original tale with empathetic backstories and takes care to remedy the original’s overt racism and latent sexism.
Despite criticisms lodged at Lowery (The Green Knight) in the months leading up to this film’s release on Disney+, Peter Pan & Wendy keeps much intact. Lowery and his co-writer Toby Halbrooks have a firm grasp on the enduring qualities of Barrie’s story, which, as they correctly suggest throughout the film, has nothing to do with whether or not the gang of Lost Boys includes girls. Their rendition teases out the conflicts between Peter and Wendy, diversifies the mythic leader’s ragtag group...

You can never predict what David Lowery – a straight-to-Disney+ take on Jm Barrie’s book. And after that, he’s doing another hard-pivot: returning to A24 for _Mother Mary, a movie set in the colourful world of pop music, with major talent in front of the camera and on song duties too.
As reported by Deadline, Lowery is directing from his own script, in which Anne Hathaway’s famous fashion designer. And given that the film is described as an “epic pop melodrama”, you can guess that the course of their relationship won’t run smoothly. Excitingly, for pop fans, the musical duties are falling to super-producer Jack Antonoff and boundary-pushing British pop idol Charli Xcx – sure to make sure the soundtrack is as essential as the story. The score, as ever, is down to Lowery’s regular collaborator Daniel Hart.
So, Vox Lux via A Star Is Born? A Ghost Story with bangers?...

As noted in our Best TV Shows list, there was just a lot of television in 2022. It’s so, so easy for great work to get lost in the relentless churn of new streaming content, even as reality programming bends us ever closer to the “30 Rock” universe. It’s even easier for great musical work to get lost on television, where scores are able to have an ambition and originality the rest of a legacy IP production might lack, or to embrace experimental elements viewers may not even notice while they’re watching a conventional-looking scene. We double-checked that film legends John Williams and Howard Shore came to TV to score themes this year, because it feels like a million years ago already now.

Despite the egregious snubbing of David Lowery's "The Green Knight" during last year's Academy Awards ceremony, real ones know that the film was one of the very best of 2021. The epic medieval fantasy film from A24 based on the 14th-century poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," saw Dev Patel as King Arthur's nephew Gawain, who sets out on the ultimate journey to test his bravery and come face-to-face with the titular Green Knight.
The film is about to receive a special Blu-ray collector's edition (not to be confused with the 2021 Blu-ray release) next month, and according to our friends over at Collider, one of the included special features will be a 20-minute companion short film from Lowery called "The Oak Thorn & The Old Rose of Love." The short film will loosely connect to "The Green Knight," focusing on two characters that share knowledge in "unconventional ways."

Robert Eggers’s viking epic, “The Northman,” has been out for a few weeks now, and while it hasn’t done huge business at the box office – about 31 million as of this writing – it’s an interesting release for early potential awards conversations.
Eggers burst onto the scene in 2015 when his debut feature “The Witch” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where the filmmaker received a jury prize for his direction. It wouldn’t be released by A24 until a year later, at which point it continued to achieve acclaim, winning two Indie Spirit awards in February 2017 for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay.
Eggers’s latest movie stars Alexander Skarsgård as Amleth, who, as a young Nordic prince, was chased from his home after his father, King Aurvandil (Ethan Hawke), is brutally murdered by his brother Fjölnir (Claes Bang). Decades later Amleth has become a Viking berserker, but...

As seems to be the case every awards season, this year’s Oscar nominations for Best Original Score overlooked a veritable symphony of rich and adventurous movie music, from the medieval hum of Daniel Hart’s work on “The Green Knight” to the organ partitas that Jonny Greenwood leant to “Spencer.” And yet, despite the usual array of inexplicable snubs, all five of the scores nominated for the Academy Award this year are absolutely excellent — a dramatic (and very welcome) change of pace from recent editions of this category.
“Dune” marks a return to form for an ultra-prolific legend who reliably does his best work on movies capable of matching the bombast he always brings to them. “Don’t Look Up” offers another chance to celebrate a rising star in this field, his latest score bringing a sense of elegance and cohesion to a satire that falls a bit short on both.

Of all the below-the-line categories at the Oscars, Best Original Score is the most difficult to predict early on due to the finicky nature of the music branch of the academy. Scores that sound like frontrunners are disqualified for a variety of reasons, from the number of credited composers to the amount of previously recorded music used. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2022 Oscar predictions for Best Original Score.)

One of the surprises on the Oscar music shortlist was Daniel Hart’s score for “The Green Knight,” which is awash with medieval musical touches appropriate for a 15th-century tale of King Arthur’s court.
The Los Angeles-based Hart, a violinist who was once a member of St. Vincent’s band, has scored all of David Lowery’s films, including “Pete’s Dragon” and “A Ghost Story.” But “The Green Knight” posed unique challenges, not the least of which was the idea of writing songs in the ancient Middle English language.
“I didn’t know anything about medieval music, really,” Hart says. But he grew up singing liturgical music in his parents’ Dallas-area Episcopal church choirs, much of which is rooted in ancient British music, so he had a starting point.
Research into Middle English poetry, the source of most of his lyrics, followed, and songs including “O Nyghtegale,” “Be Merry,...

Oscar’s music branch was particularly broad-minded for this year’s Oscar shortlist, choosing 15 scores that run the gamut from conventional to experimental, echoing ancient times as well as anticipating the music of the future.
Academy voters were especially encouraging of women (one score) and people of color (four), statistics that are heartening and may bode well for the nominations themselves.
At this point, “Dune” would seem to be the frontrunner, as Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the Frank Herbert sci-fi classic has been acclaimed for many of its craft accomplishments. Veteran composer Hans Zimmer (already an Oscar winner for “The Lion King”) pulled out all the stops, including months of experimenting with women’s voices, having instruments designed and built, and merging it all with world-music and synthesized sounds appropriate for the desert planet Arrakis.
Also high on many prediction lists are two Jonny Greenwood scores: “The Power of the Dog” and “Spencer.

Nicholas Britell has a leading three nominations from the Society of Composers & Lyricists Awards, with Tuesday’s announcement of this year’s nominees for music in visual media finding Britell in contention for both song and score for his work on Adam McKay’s satire “Don’t Look Up,” as well as a nom for TV score for “Succession.”
The Scl’s third annual awards program is slated for Feb. 1 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
Women composers and songwriters had a surprisingly strong showing this year. Fifteen of the 35 individuals nominated, or nearly 43% of the total, are female. They are nominees in all six competitive categories, and took all three slots for the newly established David Raksin Award for emerging talent.

As Martin Scorsese once said, “Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.” Indeed, the right piece of music–whether it’s an original score or a carefully selected song–can do wonders for a sequence, and today we’re looking at the 25+ films that best expressed this notion this year.

The Sounds of 2021 mix of movie soundtracks comes in at just over two hours: a synergy of cerebral, graceful, paranoid, turbulent, and wondrous sounds from across all genres, merged to tell its own sonic story. The focus is mainly Hollywood and American indie movies, with a few excursions to Ethiopia, Chile, Japan, France, United Kingdom, Italy, and Sweden. My moviegoing practices became ever more erratic this year after a move to a new country, on-off rule changes in cinemas, and a tendency to have cinematic interests in something specific that was not part of the current slate. That being said, there was excitement in the air when it came to new cinema that felt more powerful this year than last and I hope that grows. New work from Mica Levi, Ludovico Einaudi, and a country soundtrack from Clint Eastwood’s latest film are a few of the exciting moments from...

Composers Hans Zimmer and Jonny Greenwood came in strong on the Academy’s shortlist for Best Original Score, securing two slots apiece from a total of 15. Zimmer enters the next phase of Oscars competition with his scores for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and Cary Fukunaga’s Bond film No Time to Die. Greenwood, meanwhile, moves forward with his soundtracks for Jane Campion’s Western The Power of the Dog and Pablo Larraín’s Princess Diana drama, Spencer.
Zimmer is an 11-time nominee who won an Oscar for his score to The Lion King in 1995, most recently vying for gold with Christopher Nolan’s 2018 World War II drama, Dunkirk. Greenwood—who also scored Paul Thomas Anderson’s recently released Licorice Pizza—earned his first nomination that same year with Anderson’s Phantom Thread.
The only past Oscar winner in contention this year, apart from Zimmer, is Alexandre Desplat—who nabbed a slot with The French Dispatch.

The music shortlists for Oscar consideration, announced Tuesday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, might just be the most star-studded lineup in history.
Nearly all of the 15 songs on the list for potential nomination have been written or recorded by pop superstars, and the approximately 375 members of Oscar’s music branch are going to have a difficult time paring the list down to five best-song nominees.
The most interesting matchup involves spouses Jay-Z and Beyoncé (for her “Be Alive” from “King Richard”).
Three songs on the shortlist are by past Oscar winners: H.E.R., last year’s surprise victor for “Fight for You,” has “Automatic Woman” from “Bruised” in contention; “La La Land” songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are co-writers of “The Anonymous Ones” from “Dear Evan Hansen”; and Jennifer Hudson is one of the writers on “Here I Am (Singing My Way Home)” from the Aretha Franklin biopic “Respect.

Best original song Oscar contenders Beyoncé and Van Morrison are among those who received nominations in the visual media categories at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards (Hmma). The arthouse fantasy “The Green Knight” begins with a word from an off-camera narrator who disappears right after he repositions the Christian allegory of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” as a secular fairy tale.
In this pompous introduction, which sounds like a stuffier version of Mako’s preface to “Conan the Barbarian,” Gawain (Dev Patel) is compared with his uncle King Arthur (Sean Harris), though we are told that Arthur’s legend is a story for another time. Gawain is also a different kind of seeker, and the limits of his vision will come to define not only the meaning of his story but how it is told.
In “The Green Knight”, Gawain’s pilgrimage is illustrated by a series of fussily composed vignettes that hint at mysteries that Gawain and his movie’s creators are only superficially interested in. And while parts of this movie are certainly attractive,...

Post-apocalyptic dramas have become such a staple of modern storytelling that they often take the backdrop for granted, as if audiences know the way the world ends so well that it requires little elaboration. Casey Affleck’s bleak “Light of My Life” — in which he directed, wrote, and stars — falls into this loose category of talky, character-based survival dramas that may as well exist in a single expanded universe.
To be fair, Affleck has conceived an original scenario, and he’s placed it against a gorgeous, lyrical backdrop. “Light of My Life” delivers a lush variation on familiar elements, and wends its way to a tense final showdown that makes the wandering trajectory worthwhile. The movie unfolds in the wake of a disease that has wiped most of the women on Earth, while Affleck’s unnamed father defends his young daughter (astonishing newcomer Anna Pniowsky) from a man’s world.

The movie scores of 2018 have been as eclectic as the movies themselves, with any list of the year’s best forced to hop between the pep of “Paddington 2,” the swoons of “If Beale Street Could Talk,” the bloody tumult of “Mandy,” and the regal triumph of “Black Panther.” Yes, for the first time in forever, the score for a Marvel movie was worthy of being discussed alongside work from the likes of Jonny Greenwood and Justin Hurwitz. In fact, there was too much great work this year to celebrate all of it, especially in under-the-radar films like “Mary Shelley” (Amelia Warner), “Nostalgia” (Laurent Eyquem), and “Madeline’s Madeline” (Caroline Shaw). And while attention is too seldom paid to the original music in foreign films, the likes of “Burning” (Mowg) and “Capernaum” (Khaled Mouzanar) boasted indelibly evocative scores, as well.

Over the course of a long career Robert Redford has cemented his status as a living legend. Not just a great actor, but a strong filmmaker as well. Then, there’s the fact that he’s the reason why the Sundance Film Festival actually exists. Redford has done it all, even winning an Academy Award. Recently, Redford announced he was retiring, even if he sort of walked that back in days prior. If he’s to be believed, this is it. One more film. This week, that film opens in The Old Man & the Gun, a fun and light drama that perfectly utilizes the man. The movie is a charming crime caper/character study, if you can believe it. This is the plot synopsis that Fox Searchlight has put out into the world: “Based on the true story of Forrest Tucker (Robert Redford), from his audacious escape from San...

People often don’t know what’s good for them. Most of the time, the disconnect can be attributed to a lack of perspective — give someone a short-term solution, and they’ll happily create a long-term problem. It’s a phenomenon of human nature that capitalism has been all too happy to exploit, and thanks to recent “advances” in factory farming, the world is now literally eating itself to death.
So goes the premise of Christopher Quinn’s “Eating Animals,” an urgent but uncertain documentary that amplifies and expounds upon the argument Jonathan Safran Foer laid out in his 2009 book of the same name. Here’s our latest interview with a swath of Academy voters from different branches for their candid thoughts on what got picked, overlooked, and overvalued this year.
Best Picture of the Year
“Get Out” was such a great take on the genre. It was ground-breaking, the most innovative movie of the year — I’d like to see it win. And Danny Kaluuya makes a big impact. I’m now suspicious of anyone stirring their tea.
I was entranced by the subtle shifts in power between the three leads in “Phantom Thread,” and Daniel Day Lewis seemed well matched by his co-stars. With the current state of the Us, it was proper escapism to watch this intimate piece — it somehow felt more relevant than many of the films tackling current issues head-on.

It goes without saying that movie music has come a mighty long way in the last 100 years or so, but the first two decades of the 21st century have nevertheless been an extraordinarily active and evolutionary stretch of time for film scores. Without discounting the bold and formative achievements of old masters like Bernard Hermann and Toru Takemitsu, it’s fair to say that the rise of independent cinema and the challenge of the digital age have provoked a true paradigm shift in how we think about musical accompaniment.
Rock and avant-garde musicians like Jonny Greenwood and Mica Levi have used narrative projects as inspiration to explore new facets of their genius, while more traditional composers such as Alexandre Desplat and Carter Burwell have risen to the challenge by delivering the most beautiful work of their careers. The movie music of 2017 has been every bit as memorable as the movies themselves. From Paul Thomas Anderson and Jonny Greenwood to David Lowery and Daniel Hart, several of the most remarkable director-composer duos in the business returned with their finest collaborations to date. Just as exciting, the year also saw a number of teams galvanizing their previous work together into true partnerships, as Daniel Pemberton has become the best reason to get psyched for a new Guy Ritchie joint, and Tamar-kali has made the wait for Dee Rees’ next film even more excruciating than it would have been otherwise. And then there were true originals like Oneohtrix Point Never mastermind Daniel Lopatin, who brought sounds to the screen that the cinema had never heard before.

During awards season, craft discussions often focus on films in which large teams of technicians create whole worlds of images, effects, and sounds. However, as we saw last year with “Moonlight,” it’s a mistake to dismiss the craft of a low-budget film.
After making Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon,” director David Lowery wanted to shoot “A Ghost Story” with a small crew of friends, in a small home, and in a limited time period. And yet from composer Daniel Hart’s evocative score that works in perfect harmony with Johnny Marshall’s sound design, to costume designer Annell Brodeur’s remarkable feat of turning a bedsheet into a practical and beautiful ghost costume, the level of below-the-line talent was just as impressive as the small cities of people who made “Dunkirk” and “Blade Runner 2049.”

If one needs more convincing of this proclamation, I’ve raved about this bold story of loss and time since seeing the Sundance premiere, and now with it available on home release, I look forward to experiencing it again (and again).
We’re pleased to present an exclusive clip from the release, which also includes a full audio commentary with Lowery, cinematographer Andrew Droz Palermo, production designer Jade Healy, and composer Daniel Hart. There’s also a deleted scene and two featurettes, which this clip comes from as the director and Casey Affleck discuss how, in a sense, this film picks up his relationship between Rooney Mara’s character in Ain’t Them Bodies Saint.
Check it out below.

Written and directed by critically acclaimed filmmaker David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Pete’s Dragon), and boasting a top-notch cast including Academy Award® winner Casey Affleck (Best Actor, Manchester by the Sea, 2016) and two-time Academy Award® nominee Rooney Mara (Best Supporting Actress, Carol, 2015 and Best Actress, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, 2011), A Ghost Story arrives on Blu-ray™ (plus Digital HD) and DVD October 3 from Lionsgate. A24 debuted A Ghost Story to critical acclaim at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, with reviewers calling it “a poetic meditation on time, memory and spiritual connection” (David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter).

Chris here. What with Nathaniel's updated Oscar predictions and my regular Soundtracking duties, my mind has been on that ever pesky Best Original Song category. How will this year shake out for the sometimes maligned category?
Per usual we haven't had many obvious contenders, though I would argue that Beauty and the Beast's "How Does A Moment Last Forever" is one of the film's bright spots - can you just imagine Celine Dion taking the Oscar stage for the first time since Titanic. Perhaps our best chance at an Original Song behemoth like last year's La La Land and Moana were is The Greatest Showman, this season's original musical. But other questions and curiosities remain: what documentary song will surprise this year? Can credits song queen Sia finally land a nomination (she'll at least have one option with Wonder Woman)?
One contender I'm already hoping has some staying power...

There is a long unedited sequence 30 minutes into A Ghost Story where a ghost, wearing a white bedsheet with two eye-holes cut out like Charlie Brown with the Great Pumpkin, is observing his sobbing widow. She sits on the kitchen floor and eats a pie. That entire pie, bite by bite, is devoured in a scene that goes on a good five minutes. I think this is where uninformed moviegoers who may have wandered into A Ghost Story expecting a conventional haunted house thriller will have their patience stretched to the breaking point. A Ghost Story is an arty meditation on love and loss, glacial in pace, and on the surface not much happens in it. It’s not for all tastes, but for adventurous film fans it is rewarding, one of those strange movies that promises to stay with you long after the end credits have rolled.
