Who doesn’t love watching a series that tells the true-life (or at least somewhat true-life) stories of real people? That’s what HBO’s hit series “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” provides for NBA fans, Angelenos and TV viewers alike.
“Winning Time” doesn’t feature any of the real-life people that the series depicts, though some of the actors bear striking resemblances to their counterparts.
The show has a massive cast, with Quincy Isaiah (Earvin “Magic” Johnson”), John C. Reilly (Jerry Buss), Adrien Brody (Pat Riley) and others taking center stage as leads. There were also newcomers who stepped onto the court as guest stars for the second season, included Joel Allen as Kurt Rambis, Jay Davis as Byron Scott, Quentin Shropshire as James Worthy, Matthew Barnes as Mitch Kupchak, Darryl Reynolds as Robert Parish, Andrew Stephens as Kevin McHale and Larry C. Fields III as Eddie Jordan.

Almost exactly one year ago, we heard that JJ Abrams’ production company Bad Robot was shopping around a limited series adaptation of the Stephen King novel Billy Summers (you can pick up a copy at This Link), with Edward Zwick attached to direct the series and write the scripts with Marshall Herskovitz. At the time, Bad Robot wasn’t certain how long Billy Summers was going to be, just somewhere in the range of “six to ten episodes”. Well, now we know it’s going to be something closer to two hours long. The decision has been made that Billy Summers will work better as a feature, and the movie is now set up at Warner Bros. with Leonardo DiCaprio’s company Appian Way producing alongside Bad Robot.
Deadline notes that, depending on how well development of the project goes, Abrams could end up directing the film with DiCaprio taking on the lead role.

JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot is in early negotiations to develop a limited series based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel “Billy Summers,” Variety has confirmed. Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz are set to adapt, with Zwick directing. The series will soon be shopped to streamers and high end cable networks.
“Billy Summers” will be Bad Robot’s latest series adaptation with King, following “Lisey’s Story,” “Castle Rock” and “11.22.63.” The novel follows Billy Summers, a former Marine sniper and soon-retiring hitman who takes one last high-paying job. For his last hurrah, he must pretend to be an aspiring writer to embed himself in a quiet town and hunt his target, Joel Allen, who is also a hitman. But soon Billy, who only takes jobs killing “bad” men, grows increasingly skeptical of the mobsters who hired him.

Vision Film has acquired rights to I Love Us, a romantic drama from Danny A. Abeckaser’s 2B Films. Abeckaser stars with Jackie Cruz, Katie Cassidy, Harlow Jane, David James Elliott, Robert Davi, Jasper Polish, Greg Finley, James Madio, David James Elliott, Elya Baskin and Courtney Lopez in the ensemble, which wrapped production at the end of March after a shoot in Los Angeles. It will get a 10-city theatrical run along with VOD in September.
In the script by Kosta Kondilopoulos, a seasoned thief (Abeckaser) trades in his criminal ways for a “normal” married life after falling in love with a single mother (Cassidy) that catches him off guard. But when tragedy strikes, he’s forced to take one last job to pay off old debts and keep his new family together, creating conflict all around him.
Abeckaser also produced with Wild7Films’ Kyle Stefanski and Mike Hermosa, and Above the Clouds’ Jeff Hoffman. Executive producers are Katie Cassidy, Ron Rofe, Isaac Gindi, Eddie Gindi and Gustavo Nascimento.
“I Love Us was such a passion project and a labor of love. I felt the movie deserved to be with a company that really believes and loves the movie like I do. Lisa Romanoff at Vision was the right person for this journey for myself as director along with producers Kyle Stefanski, Mike Hermosa and Jeff Hoffman. We are excited for people to see it.”

The pic, which follows the shakeup of the worldwide annual fitness competition The CrossFit Games in the midst of the pandemic, will debut on iTunes and Apple TV on July 20, followed by digital platforms and VOD on August 3.

“The collaboration among the Buttery Bros., CrossFit HQ, and Gravitas has been smooth and it’s great to get the band back together,” said Michael Murphy, President of Gravitas Ventures. “Previous CrossFit films are immediate best-sellers, and we expect the same from Resurgence which is awesome in scope, story-telling, and quality.”

Six-and-a-half years after Ethan Hawke starred in the Blumhouse hit The Purge he will return to the film’s dark, dystopian mythology via the namesake USA series. The episode airs December 17 at 9/8C .
Hawke will revives the role of security system salesman James Sandin in the cold open of “7:01 A.M.,” the Season 2 finale of USA’s The Purge. The flashback scene takes the story back to one week before the first national Purge Night, the annual amnesty day that allows citizens to kill and victimize others for 12 hours without fear of prosecution.
“The finale picks up as Purge Night rages on and Esme, Ryan, Marcus and Ben fight for their lives and their loved ones,” according to a synopsis from producers.

The Purge Season 2 Episode 7
It wouldn't be The Purge without actual Purge content, and while the second season opened with America's night to murder, it appears as though it will close with that, too. An effective, violent book-end for the series seems to be a good idea. That's what people watch for, right? Even though the second season has been solidly entertaining and suspenseful, even without the threat of violence, what the world is here for is Purge Night, either figuratively in the terms of TV viewers or literally in terms of Purge tourists rolling into New Orleans with a booked hotel room, bodyguards, and guns.
In a way, focusing on the back story to a Purge night was a bold choice. The first season leaned heavily on violence,...

The Purge Season 2 Episode 3
A saying has reverberated throughout season two of The Purge. What happens on Purge Night, stays on Purge Night. As we've seen throughout the series, that's not exactly true. For Ben and Ryan, what happens on Purge Night has, and can, determine the very course of their lives in the wake of a pair of impulsive, desperate actions undertaken on a night in which all that sort of thing is legal. For everyone else, the axiom holds true, but they're not the ones struggling with the consequences of the decisions made in the heat of the moment.
For Tommy, the reckless decision to go back for a bag of cash ends up getting him a death sentence according to the Nffa justice system.

The Purge Season 2 Premiere
James DeMonaco and company have slowly been filling in all the gaps regarding The Purge. We've seen how it ended, and we've seen how it has begun, but one of the few things that hasn't been revealed is what happens on the other 364 days in between Purges. The focus has been on the killing and mayhem, but what happens during the hangover period? That's the question that season two of The Purge seems to be focusing on, offering up an all-new cast of characters and discussing just how they deal with all that time when you aren't allowed to kill anyone who bothers you.

USA dropped the first trailer for the second season of “The Purge” on Friday, and it seems like the powers-that-be may be realizing that letting people slaughter each other without consequence may not have been their best idea.
Based on the hit movie franchise, “The Purge” revolves around a 12-hour period when all crime, including murder, is legal. Season 2 explores how a single Purge night affects the lives of four interconnected characters over the course of the ensuing year, all inevitably leading up to the next Purge.
“The Purge is making people more violent, not just on Purge but every day of the year,” one character warns in the trailer. Who could possibly have seen that coming?

The first thing that came to my mind after watching Never Goin’ Back was “oh, it’s a female version of Dude, Where’s My Car?” and I didn’t really know what to make of that. As mainstream films constantly celebrate the culture of the straight white male slacker, women have always appeared on the periphery as accessories in the advancement of the men’s plots/desires. And in many ways, just by giving us female characters who are also slackers, writer/director Augustine Frizzell is sending out a strong feminist message. But to what end?
The film’s plot is quite simple: BFFs/stoners/roommates Angela (Maia Mitchell) and Jessie (Camila Morrone) want to spend a few days in Galveston. They dream of eating donuts and relaxing by the beach, but they need to come up with a little bit more money to make this come true. As...

Two young women are looking to escape a dull Texas town. That’s the essence of “Never Goin’ Back,” the zany stoner comedy that marks the directorial debut of Augustine Frizzell, and it’s such a plausible goal that it sustains the movie through many tired tropes.
In between outrageous scatalogical gags and a mixed bag of insult throwdowns, best friends and roommates Angela (Maia Mitchell) and Jessie (Camila Morrone) wander a landscape of greasy-spoon diners and convenience stores populating a gray landscape. As they hustle to maintain their waitressing jobs while plotting to skip rent for a trip to Galveston, the absurd gamble remains tethered to a very real place. If only they didn’t waste so much time getting high.
In the pantheon of the genre’s greatest hits, the A24-released “Never Goin’ Back” is pitched somewhere between a socially realistic “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle...

As the Cyndi Lauper song catchily blared, girls just want to have fun. And one of them — writer-director Augustine Frizzell — wants girls to have their own Texas-baked, Linklater-smoked-and-exhaled female buddy romp. That comes in “Never Goin’ Back,” her geographically constricted, misadventure indie-comedy that is as likely to tickle chemically-altered after-party crowds as to scare the living daylights out of after-school church groups.
Frizzell’s unrepentantly filthy, frisky celebration of lipsticked bestie-dom in the face of desperation and humiliation won’t win any awards for comic originality: The bad-day-genre standbys of “oops” drug intake, dumb schemes, and digestive mishaps are all present and accounted for. But “Never Goin’ Back,” which Frizzell has admitted is in ways an honest, personal reckoning with incidents in her own fumbling adolescence, has something many comedies simply fail to care about: a spark-filled joie de vivre about the stupidity of youth that lifts it above many...

"Well, well, well, look at this!" A24 has debuted the first official red band trailer for a wild teenager stoner comedy titled Never Goin' Back, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. I heard great things about this film, but didn't have a chance to catch it myself during the fest. The film has elicited some odd but accurate comparisons to American Honey or Spring Breakers, two other films released by A24 already. Jessie and Angela, high school dropouts, are taking a week off to chill at the beach. Too bad their house got robbed, rent's due, they're about to get fired, and they're broke. Maia Mitchell and Camila Morrone star, and the cast includes Kyle Mooney, Joel Allen, and Aristotle Abraham II. This looks hilarious and crazy awesome in all the most wicked, amusing ways possible. Get the bong ready and enjoy. Here's the first official...

This morning both the Sundance Institute and Picturehouse announced this year’s programme for Sundance Film Festival: London. Female stories and filmmakers shine brightly in this years line-up as seven out of the twelve films showcased at this year’s Sundance Film Festival: London were directed by women. Along with a thrilling array of female leads on screen, the selection champions female voices and highlights some of the broad and excellent women-led work direct from Sundance Utah.
The Festival, which will take place between the 31st May – 3 June at Picturehouse Central, will open with the UK premiere of Jennifer Fox’s The Tale, starring Laura Dern and Elizabeth Debicki. The festival also honours British talent once again, this time by premiering Idris Elba’s directorial debut, Yardie. Women in Film takes centre stage at this year’s event, as movements such as Time’s Up and #MeToo continue to highlight inequality in the film industry.
