New York Times reporter Joe Coscarelli‘s new book, Rap Capital: An Atlanta Story, is a thorough account of the rise of Atlanta hip-hop as a business and a culture. Through vignettes with the city’s eclectic cast of characters — rappers and businesspeople alike — Coscarelli paints a vivid portrait of the city’s unique wealth of talent. The book’s concern with 2013 until 2020 lands right as the forces of racism and capitalism, a constant source of tension within hip-hop, confronted the dawn of the streaming era. In the chapter on Migos,...

I don’t actually remember the first time I met Riley Gale, late vocalist of the exceedingly heavy thrash-metal band Power Trip, but I remember the second.
As with so many other stories about meeting Riley, it was outside of a punk show, at a Toronto festival called Not Dead Yet. We were hanging out between bands, probably taking sips of beer out of our jacket pockets, shooting the shit. I noticed immediately that Riley looked you in the eye. He laughed at jokes. He asked questions. He introduced you to his other friends.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a new standalone Spidey game from Insomniac Games, wowed fans during the PlayStation 5 reveal event in June. The game is set to pick up Miles’ story after the events of Marvel’s Spider-Man and further explore the character’s evolution into a web-slinging superhero.
Sony is not only touting this game as a continuation of its last superhero hit but as a powerful showcase for the PS5’s technology and innovations. “
“With PS5’s ultra-fast Ssd, players can near-instantaneously fast-travel across Marvel’s New York City, or feel the tension of each one of Miles’s web-swings, punches, web shots, and venom blasts with the DualSense wireless controller’s haptic feedback,” Sony said in a blog post. “Highly-detailed character models and enhanced visuals across the game intensify the story of Miles Morales as he faces great, new challenges while learning to be his own Spider-Man.

It's taken a couple of indie mavericks with a Martin Scorsese inspiration to bring out the essence of Adam Sandler's histrionic talent. Forever crushed by his image as a star of crass slapstick hits, Sandler finally finds a reason to surprise all in this film, with the most remarkable act yet in his career of three decades.
American indie wizards Josh and Benny Safdie have created a sparkling winner with "Uncut Gems", a crime drama that technically bears street-savvy edge even as it reveals intelligent storytelling relish to unfold a gritty suspense drama. The impact is slowburn as the crime thriller grows on you with every passing minute. A tautly executed narrative, brought to life by Ronald Bronstein and Benny Safdie's crisp editing, renders importance to every second of the film's 135-minute runtime.

The creative process that would eventually lead to the critically acclaimed Atlanta began, inadvertently, with a former child actor, porn star and viral rapper. In 2013, Abella Anderson was the center of adult entertainment, Danielle Fishel was years removed from playing Topanga on Boy Meets World, and Trinidad James was still running off “All Gold Everything” fumes. They all starred in Clapping for the Wrong Reasons, the visual prelude to Childish Gambino’s 2013 album Because The Internet.

Trinidad James doesn't think Kanye West's recent rant about slavery or wearing his Maga hat will hurt Adidas' bottom line in the long run, although it seems to have put a dent in Yeezy sales overseas already. On May 5, a Yeezy-affiliated event in Sydney, Australia was shut down 45 minutes after it began because no one showed up. It's possible it was poorly publicized, but many think it's damage done from Ye's recent rants.

Now that Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars's record-breaking hit "Uptown Funk" has officially been Petty'd, a lot of rearranging of how the royalties are being divvied up between the writers is in the works. And a fascinating look by Billboard at just how much each party is owed reveals that quite a few peoples' pockets are about to get a lot fatter thanks to Ronson and Mars's mistakes. At first, just the song's original writers — Ronson, Mars, Phillip Martin Lawrence, and Jeffrey Bhasker — were getting paid. But early on, the four reached out to Trinidad James (known legally as Nicholas Williams) and producer Devon Gallaspy to offer them credit for the song "All Gold Everything," lyrics from which "Uptown Funk" recycles. That move left the original four writers with a 21.26 percent share of the royalties, and Trinidad and Gallaspy splitting a 15 percent share. Then, along came the...

Welcome to the March 17, 2015 edition of Outrage Watch, HitFix's (almost) daily rundown of all the things folks are peeved about in entertainment. So much anger today! Top story: Daily Beast TV writer Kevin Fallon has a big problem with NBC's "One Big Happy." "As a sitcom, it’s as retrograde as it gets - a 'Three's Company' retread where instead of getting starkly different personalities, the characters get different sexualities. (Or, in Prudence’s case, an accent)," writes Fallon of the new Ellen DeGeneres-produced sitcom, which stars Elisha Cuthbert as a gay woman who decides to raise a child with her straight best friend (Nick Zano) -- only to have his hot new wife (Kelly Brook) move in. "Hijinks barely even ensue, replaced instead by broad lesbian clichés and stereotypes that are only recognized as jokes when the unsettling, maniacal laugh track kicks in." Fallon continues: "If...

If you're already anticipating the loss of Donald Glover in the fifth season of Community — the actor will only appear in five of the 13 Dan Harmon eps — here's a short film featuring the rapper-comedian, which he also wrote and produced. Directed by Hiro Murai, Clapping for the Wrong Reasons offers a day in the life peek at Glover's alter ego Childish Gambino — a moniker he adopted in college from an online Wu-Tang name generator. There are two versions of the short — an "Internet" cut, which is rather surreal, and a director's cut, about 25 minutes long (also with a loose narrative, but slightly more coherent). Costars include musicians like Chance the Rapper, Trinidad James and Flying Lotus, porn star Abella Anderson...
