You’ve probably never heard of the Bigfoot horror movie Sasqua, made and released in the 1970s but completely lost to the sands of time. It’s a story that filmmaker John Campopiano (Pennywise: The Story of It, Snapper: The Man-Eating Turtle Movie That Never Got Made) is gearing up to tell in Sasqua: The Lost Bigfoot Film of Massachusetts, a new documentary that’s coming soon from production company Chapman Productions.
What’s the latest on this unique project, you might be wondering?
Campopiano updates this week, “In late 2023, the team wrapped production on interviews and filming for the documentary. Since that time we’ve engaged an incredibly talented full-time editor, Sean Tiedeman, to help us bring the story and film to life. A composer I’ve worked with before on several previous documentaries, Sean Schafer Hennessy, is back again to provide some original music. In addition, we’ve...

Sure, irradiated zombies and bloodthirsty apocalypse bikers can be pretty scary. Draculas and Frankensteins? Scary. Cthulhus… Mothmen… Graboids? The absolute worst. But for indie content creators, no boogeyman or cryptid is quite as hair-raising as the many great and monstrous leviathans ritualistically summoned by the occult and alchemical ritual known as filmmaking. Look: there’s Shaky Financing dragging itself out of the swamp, eyes burning blood red! And there: Collapsing Theatrical Market, unfurling its batwings in the rafters of the old abbey! And so on and so on.
But! As the Cryptkeeper, Vaultkeeper and Old Witch have have reminded us many times before, misery loves company. So rather than hanging on the edge of your seat anxiously peering through ragged knuckles at the current (but only temporary!) dumpster-fire state of your latest film project, instead console yourself with the fact that many of your Halloweentime horror favorites have had their own very bumpy rides.

As a monster movie loving kid growing up in New England in the 1990s, October was the Holy month. During that time my viewing diet and that of my neighborhood pals consisted of all things spooky, culminating on October 31 with the big celebration.
For me, part of the magic and excitement of that era and time of year were the seemingly countless local car dealerships, restaurants, and retail stores hocking deals via their Halloween-themed commercials – “Come on down for some Spooky Discounts!” The commercials and radio spots peppered our local Providence-area channels and airwaves throughout the entire month of October. In retrospect, they seem fairly hokey but they still possess a local flare that I find charming.
Along with these local industries getting in on the creepy fun, we also witnessed a major surge in regional haunted houses and frightful hayrides. These experiences ranged from the more legitimate haunted houses...

The Fangoria Chainsaw Awards 2023 streamed live on Shudder last night – if you missed the show, you can watch it right now! – honoring the best in horror from the past year.
While the Academy Awards may have ignored 2022’s best horror, including The Black Phone, Prey, and Nope, the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards once again served as horror’s own celebration of another incredible year for the genre. And Bloody Disgusting/Cinedigm are thrilled to report that our movies took home Chainsaw Awards in five different categories this year!
Damien Leone’s Terrifier 2 was the biggest winner of the night, winning a whopping four Chainsaw Awards. Horror fans selected Terrifier 2 as the Best Limited Release Movie of 2022, while the film also won for Best Makeup FX and Best Kill. You’ve probably never heard of the Bigfoot horror movie Sasqua, made and released in the 1970s but completely lost to the sands of time. It’s a story that filmmaker John Campopiano is gearing up to tell in Sasqua: The Lost Bigfoot Film of Massachusetts, a new documentary that’s now in the works from Providence-based production company Atomic Clock.
Described by The Boston Globe as “an obscure horror movie about a hippie commune attacked by cryptids,” the elusive Sasqua has never seen the light of day outside of a brief and localized theatrical release back in the 1970s, and Campopiano has set out to uncover as much information, and as many relevant interview subjects, as he possibly can.
The film itself, unfortunately, is considered completely and entirely lost at this point in time, with only very grainy old trailer footage surfacing on YouTube over the years. Directed by Channon Scot,...

I’ll be honest right from the start. I’m not a huge fan of the original It TV movie. I would have been seven when it was originally shown and I obviously knew about it or had at least seen the Tim Curry Pennywise image many times as I grew up, but it wasn’t until I was about thirty years old that I bought the DVD and gave it a watch. I think without nostalgia, it doesn’t hit quite the same and, for me at least, the first part of the remake blows it away. But the original has such a following and has such a cultural significance that it’s a very important movie for the horror genre.
Maybe unsurprisingly it’s...

As a documentary filmmaker and archivist, I rely on a few critical things when putting together a new film project. The first thing is patience; finding rare and rarely seen materials is often a marathon, not a sprint. The other thing I rely on is the cooperation from and collaboration with the holders of said rare material. Special FX makeup artists, script supervisors, stand-ins, and journalists have been my saving grace on nearly every documentary film project I’ve worked on. For our latest feature length documentary, Pennywise: The Story of It, there were several people who opened their archives to our team and it was this generosity that really helped us elevate the documentary. One of those people was Bart Mixon, Special FX Makeup Supervisor, and another – and the subject of this article and interview – was Canadian journalist, Steve Newton.

In the 1980s and into the 1990s, there was a creative explosion for the horror genre, with countless filmmakers picking up a camera for the first time, heading out with their friends, and making horror movie magic together. Some of these movies remain favorites here in the horror community to this day, but there are many others that you’ve probably never even heard of.
Snapper is one of those movies. And it’s the subject of a new documentary from writer/director John Campopiano (Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary, Pennywise: The Story of It) that uncovers lost footage from the film that never was, telling the tale of two friends in Massachusetts and the killer turtle they *almost* brought to life in the early ’90s.

Screambox original documentary Pennywise: The Story of It uncovered a wealth of insight into the 1990 Stephen King adaptation. Five years of work from co-directors John Campopiano (Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary) and Christopher Griffiths (Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser) paid untold dividends for horror fans.
With exclusive interviews with many of the miniseries’ key players – Pennywise himself, Tim Curry, cast members Richard Thomas, Seth Green, Tim Reid, and Emily Perkins, director Tommy Lee Wallace, writer Lawrence D. Cohen, special effects makeup artist Bart Mixon, and more – along with rare materials and never-before-seen footage, even the most knowledgeable viewers will learn a thing or two.
Here are six things I learned from Pennywise: The Story of It.
1. George A. Romero was originally attached to direct.
King and George A. Romero were fans of one another’s output, which ultimately led to their friendship and several collaborations, but both wanted to work together more.

"Rolling!" Watch out for killer turtles! Check out this official trailer for a never-finished-film documentary called Snapper: The Man-Eating Turtle Movie That Never Got Made, the latest from director John Campopiano, who is also currently working on the film Pennywise: The Story of It. This doc tells the untold story of Snapper, an unfinished early 90s film about a man eating turtle that wreaks havoc on a lakeside community in New England. Told through unearthed behind-the-scenes set footage, photos, newly digitized film reels of daily footage, and some never-before-told stories from the filmmakers. "This is a short doc (30-minutes) about the making of a creature feature that actually fell apart before becoming a true film. In many ways it's also a tiny window into DIY garage filmmaking here in New England during that era." This sounds great! And for those interested - this short is already available to watch virtually...
