Fans have watched Yara Shahidi's "Black-ish" character, Zoey Johnson, grow up on our screens for nearly nine years - first in three seasons of the ABC show, and then through five seasons of its Freeform spinoff "Grown-ish." Now, it's time to say goodbye to the iconic character, as Freeform announced "Grown-ish" has been renewed for a sixth and final season.
In a video posted to Freeform's YouTube channel on March 29, Shahidi (who will next star as Tinkerbell in Disney+'s latest adaptation "Peter Pan and Wendy") made the announcement herself, promising the show's "day ones" that the final season will not disappoint.
"Hey, 'Grown-ish' fam. It's Yara, and I wanted to share the news with you guys, our day ones, that season six of 'Grown-ish' will be our final season. But don't be sad because we are going to do it up big," Shahidi began, before detailing...

"To be able to watch Yara, Marcus and our entire Grown-ish family grow up in front of (and in many ways alongside) us over these past several years has been both a joy and an honor."
"From the stories we've told to the talent we've fostered and, most importantly, the memories made, I could not be more proud of everything we've accomplished and the -ish family I've been a part of.

Grown-ish‘s Francia Raisa, Tom Ainsley (Versailles), Tien Tran (Space Force) and Suraj Sharma (God Friended Me) are set as leads opposite Hilary Duff in How I Met Your Father, Hulu’s straight-to-series spinoff to long-running CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother.
Created and written by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, How I Met Your Father is set in the near future, with Sophie (Duff) telling her son the story of how she met his father, much like Josh Radnor (and Bob Saget’s) Ted Mosby did in the original series. Raisa will play Valentina, Sophie’s (Duff) roommate. She’s an aspiring stylist and Sophie’s great friend.

The black-ish universe is expanding yet again, and we can't wait to see what the new world has in store for us.
Created by Kenya Barris, black-ish follows the lives of an upper-middle-class African American family as they comically attempt to navigate the social pressures of being the only family of color in their neighborhood.
The show's first spin-off series, Grown-ish, follows the oldest child Zoey Johnson (played by Yara Shadidi) off to college.
The newest spin-off series, mixed-ish, is a prequel that takes place in the 80's and chronicles the early years of black-ish mom Rainbow Cinnamon "Bow" Johnson (played by Tracee Ellis Ross).
The show's theme song, "In the Mix", was written and performed by none other than Mariah Carey, who was excited to take part in the project as a bi-racial woman working in the entertainment industry.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: If you could pick one show – old or current – that you could champion/discuss more, but haven’t for whatever reason, what would it be? Why?

Tuesday’s Emmy nominations make the answer much simpler than I would’ve hoped: “Better Things.” Pamela Adlon’s excellent FX comedy is made with such a potent combination of artistry and heart. Each piece is carefully crafted, from Adlon’s sweeping direction to the intimate vignette storytelling to the sparkling soundtrack to each individual performance and more. There are so many layers here, sliding in so smoothly one on top of the other, you don’t realize just how rich the personalities, story arcs, and overall experience is until you spend time with the series. While never a ratings juggernaut,...

When Freeform's Grown-ish returns on June 5, there will be at least one headline-grabbing new cast member. Jordyn Woods, the actress and model at the center of the Tristan Thompson cheating scandal, is set to join the teen drama's cast. The role marks Woods's acting debut; up to this point, her career has mostly been based in the modeling world. Kylie Jenner's ex-best friend is set to be a guest star, not a series regular during the second season, but the exact number of episodes she'll be in is currently unknown.
According to People, Woods will play a character named Dee, a college freshman a year below sophomore Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi). The casting notice describes Dee as a "sweet soul with a soft-spoken and sincere vulnerability." People also confirmed that Woods's first episode will come later in the season, reporting the date of her debut episode as July 24, over...

ABC has also placed a series order for Mixed-ish, a spinoff about Rainbow Johnson's experience of growing up in a mixed-race family in the '80s.
A backdoor pilot for the series, titled "Becoming Bow," was originally slated to air May 7, but the episode will now be held for next season, presumably to air as part of the first season of the spinoff.

The Johnsons will be back for another go-round. ABC has picked up a sixth season of its hit comedy series black-ish for the 2019-2020 season. In addition, the network has given an early season order to mixed-ish, a spinoff about Rainbow Johnson’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the ‘80s.
The black-ish renewal is not a surprise for the praised single-camera comedy centered on an affluent African-American family struggling to raise their kids in the largely white culture of well-to-do suburbia. Also not surprising was the pickup for mixed-ish, which had emerged as ABC’s strongest comedy pilot.
ABC had intended to air a “Becoming Bow” episode of black-ish on May 7, which could have become a backdoor pilot for a potential prequel series. With the mixed-ish series order, that episode will now be held for next season, ABC says. Bless This Mess, “The Predators...

ABC has renewed “Black-ish” for a sixth season and has also put out a series order for a prequel to the show titled “Mixed-ish.”
The spinoff series, which has been in development since February, focuses on the experience of Tracee Ellis Ross’s character, Rainbow Johnson, growing up in a mixed-race family in the ‘80s.
“Black-ish” centers on the Johnsons, an affluent black family in a predominantly white neighborhood. Parents Andre “Dre” (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow are trying to raise their kids, who are growing up in very different worlds than they did, to have the right values and appreciate their roots.
Season 5 of show has been posting solid ratings to-date, with an Live+Same Day rating of 0.80 in the key 18-49 demographic, and an average of 3.33 million viewers per episode.

Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) may not be the favorite child anymore. After a rough ride in the beginning of season two that resulted in Dre (Anthony Anderson) cutting his eldest daughter off completely, Zoey appears to be having a pretty hard time in this exclusive sneak peek of the second half of the season, which you can see below. Even her car is getting repossessed, all because her dad's mad at her for just like almost getting expelled because she admitted to cheating on a test, and maybe because she hasn't exactly been a model citizen since she got to college. But it's fine! She's handling it! Ok she's not handling it, but she'll survive, right? "Your...

Grown-ish follows the Zoey Johnson character from Black-ish as she leaves the nest and faces the new, more mature demands of college. The current fifth season of Black-ish will include a Rainbow-centric episode. The episode, which is already casting to film in March, will feature flashbacks to a teen version of Tracee Ellis Ross’ character of Rainbow. No deals are done but I hear the episode could become a backdoor pilot for a potential prequel series. Black-ish co-executive producer Peter Saji is in talks to pen the episode, set in the 1980s-90s, which will revolve around Rainbow’s growing up.
If deals make and the episode indeed becomes a planted spinoff, Black-ish creator Kenya Barris is expected to be an executive producer on the potential prequel but likely won’t have day-to-day creative involvement given his overall deal commitment to Netflix.
Black-ish already spawned one successful spinoff, Freeform’s Grown-ish, which originated as a backdoor pilot episode of the mothership series featuring Yara Shahidi’s character, Zoey Johnson, as she goes...

Online ticket sellers Fandango and Atom Tickets have launched sales of Brie Larson’s “Captain Marvel” a full two months before the Disney-Marvel tentpole opens.

Although ABC's The Middle recently ended after an admirable nine-season run - the now-canceled Roseanne reboot took away its Tuesday night time slot - it seems Sue Heck is finally getting her due. Similarly to how Black-ish spawned a spinoff about eldest daughter Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) in Grown-ish, The Middle has given way to a spinoff that will follow Sue, played by Eden Sher.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will focus on "the 20-something adventures of eternal optimist Sue Heck as she leaves the small town of Orson to navigate the ups and downs of a career and young adulthood in Chicago." The last season of The Middle, which ended on May 22, was the perfect showcase for the character, who we got to see deal with romantic relationships while finishing her final year of college.

NowThis wants 18-year-old Americans to register to vote, so it has teamed up with a famous 18-year-old who, as fate would have it, recently registered to vote. Yara Shahidi, of Black-ish fame, will "take over" the NowThis social network as part of Eighteen x 18, a voter registration initiative that will lead up to the 2018 election.
Shahidi, who portrays Zoey Johnson on Black-ish and its spin-off Grown-ish, introduced Eighteen x 18 in a video that arrived online on (you guessed it) April 18. "We are activating young people to register and vote in the 2018 midterm elections," Shahidi explains in the video, "which means every month I'll be taking over NowThis talking about the upcoming and super important midterm elections." As she does, she'll direct viewers to the Eighteen X 18 homepage, where eligible Americans can register to vote.

Riz Ahmed made history in 2017 by becoming the first man of Asian descent to win a Primetime Emmy for acting. The British-Pakistani performer won Best Movie/Mini Actor for his role in the crime drama “The Night Of.” That also made him the first Asian actor, male or female, to win for a leading role. This year Asian actors may break through again in leading categories as Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) enters the conversation for Best Drama Actress and Darren Criss (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace“) jockeys for position in the same category Ahmed just won.
The only other Asian actor to win an Emmy besides Ahmed was Archie Panjabi, who is of Indian descent. She won Best Drama Supporting Actress for “The Good Wife” in 2010. However, one may also count Iranian actress Shohreh Aghdashloo, Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actress winner in 2009 for “The House of Saddam.” Middle Eastern countries...
