The series combimed live-action with animated sequences, with Keef seeing and hearing inanimate objects talking to him as he becomes more aware of racism in his everyday life. Along with Morris, “Woke” also starred T. Murph, Blake Anderson, Sasheer Zamata and Rose McIver.

The debut season of Hulu's Woke took us through quite a journey, and, thankfully, it's not over. On Nov. 17, Variety confirmed that the series will return for a second installment, though the release date is still unknown. The renewal news came only two months after the streaming service dropped the first batch of episodes, which left us on a cliffhanger.
The show follows the story of San Francisco-based cartoonist Keef Knight (Lamorne Morris), who is forced to confront the ineluctable reality of being Black in America after a distressing encounter with the police. In season one, we see Keef - who's based on real-life artist Keith Knight - grapple with his career and identity, suddenly realizing that the world isn't so lucid and his nonconfrontational approach to life is completely off beam.
After Keef is mistaken for a suspect and aggressively apprehended by law enforcement - which leads to...

He doesn’t address race in his comics because it’s never been a big factor in his life, and he doesn’t see any reason to rock the boat. But then he’s roughly tackled and handcuffed by police because they mistake him for a mugger — and suddenly, bottles of malt liquor and pens are talking to him and...

On Hulu’s “Woke,” cartoonist Keef Knight sees his world shaken into surreality by an experience that’s sadly common. After a run-in with violent, racist police officers who stop short of taking his life but manhandle and humiliate him in the process, Keef begins to hear the accoutrements of his life — pens, photos of himself, liquor bottles — speaking to him in frank and often harsh tones. It’s an awakening to the secret language of the world that, in moments, operates powerfully on the level of metaphor. Keef finally gets it — he’s alert in a way he hadn’t been before.
Unfortunately, more often the metaphor falls flat. The rules of Keef’s new world — when things speak to him and why — are so elastic as to generate more confusion than interest, and, what’s more, they don’t tend to have much of interest to say. What...

Hulu dropped the trailer for its upcoming comedy series “Woke” on Friday, a semi-animated show that picks apart what it means to become, well, woke.
In the 2-minute, 23-second video, which you can view above, you’ll meet Keef (played by Lamorne Morris), an African-American cartoonist who is just about to break into mainstream success when get he is the victim of an incident of police brutality and his life becomes more animated.
No, really, it actually gets more animated, as you can see in the trailer, which shows Keef start to hear trash cans, beer bottles and walls talking to him after he gets his “ass beat” by the police. Soon his own cartoons are coming to life before his very eyes.
