Exclusive: Bohemian Rhapsody and The Theory Of Everything scribe Anthony McCarten has made a deal for his Muse of Fire Productions banner to reteam with financier/producer Compelling Pictures for a feature adaptation of McCarten’s upcoming play The Collaboration. McCarten has already begun writing the script for a film that focuses on the extraordinary creative relationship between artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol in the 1980s, and how contrasting beliefs became the propulsion for their work together.
Compelling Pictures is headed by Denis O’Sullivan (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Jeff Kalligheri (Submergence). They’ve made a pre-emptive deal for the film rights with Muse of Fire, with a plan to fast-track development so that the film can go into production shortly after the play completes its initial run in London in 2022.

The business of depicting genius on screen has always attracted screenwriters, directors, actors and audiences alike. There is fertile dramatic ground in the notion that those born with a gift walk in the same world as the rest of us – and the friction and awe this causes plays a huge part in many of the films on this list. Here’s our look at some of the best Movie Geniuses.
Good Will Hunting
This is the film that introduced the world to Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. It earned the boys a Best Original Screenplay Oscar in 1998 and their transformation to Hollywood big shots is visible when their stunned looks of realisation gives way to youthful exuberance. It’s a treat to watch.
The film deals with the Becoming of Will Hunting, a janitor at a college whose innate genius for Mathematics leads him to the therapy room of that late,...

Felicity Jones loves playing powerful women who have made a big impact. She talks about her roller-coaster life, being a ‘constant news-checker’, and the fun of winding up her co-stars
The actor Felicity Jones, judged by dreary national statistics, is neither tall nor short: she’s a bang-on average 5ft 3in. Measured by the slightly looser gauge in her imagination, though, Jones is a colossus, a towering church-and-steeple of a human being. She’s got a basketballer’s reach and a bodyguard’s doorway-filling bulk. Even in flat-soled shoes, this 36-year-old can go around plucking stranded cats out of trees. “Without a doubt,” she says, “I’ve always felt bigger and taller than I am.”
In the past few years especially, the actor has made good use of this inside-outside differential. Whether it was playing the pioneering American judge, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, in 2018’s On the Basis of Sex, or...

“Gone Girl” was treated rather harshly at the 2015 Academy Awards. Despite being of the most popular and well-reviewed films of the year, David Fincher‘s movie came away with just one Oscar nomination: Best Actress for Rosamund Pike. Pike was, frankly, terrifying, as Amy Dunne. She hasn’t featured in an awards race since that film, despite respected turns in “A United Kingdom,” “The Man With the Iron Heart” and “Hostiles.” She must, surely, join the Best Actress race once again for her portrayal of war reporter Marie Colvin in “A Private War.”
The Aviron Pictures film is directed by Matthew Heineman, who was Oscar-nominated alongside Tom Yellin in 2016 for Best Documentary for “Cartel Land.” This is his first feature film after a career full of documentaries. “A Private War” is a docudrama, much like “Zero Dark Thirty.” Indeed, the journalistic nature of his documentaries clearly helps here to tell...

Jane Hawking has stepped up her assertion that acclaimed 2014 biopic misrepresents her marriage
Jane Hawking, the first wife of late physicist and author Stephen Hawking, has further asserted that an acclaimed film about their lives together misrepresented their 30 year marriage.
Hawking, whose memoir Travelling to Infinity was used as a source for James Marsh’s The Theory of Everything (2014), said that despite her pleading with producers to remain faithful to her book, inaccuracies were permitted in order to keep the running time to a minimum.

These speculations might be only rumors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t follow the trail all the way to the audition room. “The Aeronauts”Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones might be pairing up again for Amazon Studios. The former onscreen couple each earned an Oscar nom for their portrayals of Stephen and Jane Hawking, and Redmayne ended up winning the statue. They’re looking to re-enter the world of science in “The Aeronauts” based on the true story about two hot air balloonists that go on a journey to discover the secrets of the heavens. Their roles are not yet confirmed, but London-based Julie Harkin is attaching talent for the film, which seems to be actively looking to fill its cast list. “Master and Commander 2”Russell Crowe is stirring up intrigue...

New biopic starts where the Ballad of John and Yoko left off.
John Lennon and Yoko Ono introduced Nutopia at a press conference in New York City on April Fool's Day 1973. The conceptual country was to be a new utopia, open to all. Lennon even wrote the "Nutopian International Anthem" for his 1973 album Mind Games. The song, apparently inspired by John Cage, consists of 4 seconds of silence. John and Yoko played with art forms throughout the post-Beatles era, trying to make a universal noise. So who better to produce a John Lennon and Yoko Ono movie focusing on their love story than Universal Pictures? The studio is in negotiations to option the rights to upcoming biopic, according to Variety.

Felicity Jones is on the verge of becoming a household name thanks to starring roles in the upcoming Rouge One: A Star Wars Story and Inferno. However, the movie that jump-started her Hollywood career also brought a friendship that ended too soon.
Jones was cast in 2011’s Like Crazy opposite Anton Yelchin, with whom she formed a bond offscreen until the actor’s tragic death in June after his Jeep Cherokee rolled down the driveway to his Los Angeles home and fatally pinned him to a gate. He was 27.

Here's Murtada speculating very early on the 2017 Oscar race.
There’s usually a real life person in the best actress lineup. It’s not as prevalent as it is in best actor - 4 this year. But we do have Joy Mangano (Jennifer Lawrence). Last year there were Jane Hawking (Felicity Jones) and Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon). Recently we got everyone from Philomena Lee (Judi Dench) to Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams) and Edith Piaf (Marion Cotillard) and most famously The Queen (Helen Mirren) and her 80s nemesis Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep). Now we have two more possible candidates for the 2017 Oscar race as two interesting biopics were announced this week with two actresses well known to the Academy. French writer Colette (to be played by Keira Knightley) and Jesus disciple Mary Magdalene (Rooney Mara).
Colette in 1920s

True Story may center on the shocking connection between disgraced New York Times writer Michael Finkel (Jonah Hill) and convicted murderer Christian Longo (James Franco), but Felicity Jones still managers to shine in her small but key role in the film.
Inspired by Finkel’s memoir of the same name, True Story offers a haunting illustration of Longo’s actions after he’s accused of murdering his wife and two children – most notably, his decision to use Finkel’s name while on the run in Mexico. The puzzling act leads Finkel to begin visiting Longo in prison, luring him into a verbal game of cat and mouse. Finkel’s partner, Jill (Jones), sees right through Longo’s manipulative tactics and tries to warn him of what he’s getting into before it’s too late, but Longo’s charm is all Finkel can see.

Felicity Jones laughs and says "absolutely" when asked if she's coming up with various ways to say she can't talk about her starring role in the Star Wars spin-off Rogue One.
"I can't talk about it. It's really, really exciting but I can't talk about it," she said in a recent interview.
The film was confirmed by Disney's Bob Iger at a shareholders meeting in San Francisco earlier this month.Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) will begin directing this summer. The movie is scheduled for a Dec. 16, 2016, release.
Jones, 31, said she has had "a fantastic, fantastic few months." She was nominated for a best-actress Oscar for her role as Jane Hawking in The Theory of Everything, and she says all the women nominated in that category supported each other.
"It felt very uncompetitive which was really nice," she said. "It felt like we were all supporting each other." (Julianne Moore won for Still Alice.

Here's our guide to who we think will clean up at this year's Academy Awards, as well as who we think deserves to win...
Go into the Oscars appreciating them for what they are - awards for relatively popular, very good films - and they're a fun circus, whose mere existence ensures some movies get funded in the first place. Take them as an arbiter of what's actually the best of anything, and you're on far shakier ground. But I think most people have long accepted that.
This year alone, something as daring as Nightcrawler - a very uncomfortable, yet brilliant piece of cinema, with plenty to say - barely made it onto the Academy Awards radar. But that's democracy. Ask 5-10,000 people to choose the best thing, and many times, they're not going to choose yours.
This year's Academy Award nominations are no different in that regard, then. But...

[Editor's Note: This post is presented in partnership with Movies On Demand. Catch up on this year’s Awards Season contenders and past winners On Demand. Today's selection is the Oscar-nominated drama "The Theory of Everything." This interview was first published last fall.] In "The Theory of Everything," opening November 7, Felicity Jones plays Jane Wilde, the first wife of Stephen Hawking. The drama's much buzzed-about performance is, of course, Redmayne's, whose physical transformation into Stephen Hawking is a remarkable thing to watch. But Jones is not one to be relegated to just playing the wife of a genius. Jane goes through her own changes throughout the film, and Jones was determined to get her transformations, both physical and emotional, just right. Jones sat down with Indiewire to discuss her own exploration of Stephen and Jane Hawking, which included an on-the-spot shift into Jane's vocal patterns. Read More: Watch: New 'The Theory of...

He spent nearly a decade trying to get the story of Stephen and Jane Hawking on screen and with The Theory Of Everything burning through awards season, it’s perhaps not surprising that writer/producer Anthony McCarten is seeing some movement on another dream project. Darkest Hour, the story of a crucial moment in Winston Churchill’s life during the height of World War II, is now set up at Theory production company Working Title.Darkest Hour is set in 1940, when Churchill was in his first days as Prime Minister. With Britain under serious threat from Germany and the tide looking likely to turn further, Churchill was under pressure to strike a deal with Hitler that would see Britain effectively become a Third Reich puppet stake. He wrestled with the decision and ultimately decided... Well, you know where history proceeds from here so no-one should be calling for a spoiler alert.

Screenwriter Graham Moore and author Andrew Hodges received the 27th-annual USC Libraries Scripter Award for The Imitation Game. Selection committee chair Howard Rodman announced the winners at the black-tie event on Saturday, Jan. 31, at USC’s historic Doheny Memorial Library.
Moore based his adaptation on “Alan Turing: The Enigma,” a 1983 biography by Hodges of the brilliant British World War II code-breaker and computer pioneer who was later persecuted for his homosexuality. Rodman accepted the award on behalf of Hodges, who teaches mathematics at Oxford University’s Wadham College.
“Alan Turing never got to stand on a stage and hear people applaud his name,” Moore said in his acceptance speech. “And I do right now, and that is a profound injustice. All that I can do is spend the rest of my life endeavoring to repair it.”

The Imitation Game has won the USC Scripter Award for adapted screenplay.
The award honours the writers of adapted screenplays as well as the authors of the original material that the films are based on.
Screenwriter Graham Moore picked up the award at the event on behalf of himself and Andrew Hodges, author of Alan Turing: The Enigma.
"Alan Turing never got to stand on a stage and hear people applaud for his name," Moore said.
"I do right now. That's a profound injustice, and all that I can do is say that because of this, I can spend the rest of my life endeavouring to repair that."
Other nominees for the award included Gone Girl by author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn, Inherent Vice by screenwriter Paul Thomas Anderson and author Thomas Pynchon, and The Theory of Everything by screenwriter Anthony McCarten and taken from Jane Hawking's Travelling To Infinity: My Life With Stephen.

Los Angeles — It may be hard to believe, but the USC Scripter Award is honoring its 27th recipient this year. The Scripter is the equivalent of an Adapted Screenplay honor for both the screenwriter and the author of the original source material. The last five winners were "Up in the Air," "The Social Network," "The Descendants," "Argo" and "12 Years A Slave." Your 2015 winner? The duo behind "The Imitation Game." Andrew Hodges, author of "Alan Turing: The Enigma," wasn't on hand, but screenwriter Graham Moore was and the Oscar nominee seemed to be caught off guard by the win. "I need to thank the man who made 'The Imitation Game,' my director Morten Tyldum," Moore said in accepting the award. "I would do an impression of his Norwegian accent, but all he'd say was, 'Good job Gra-ham!' Our producers Nora Grossman and Teddy Schwarzman, whose tireless dedication brought...

Santa Barbara — Controversy was at the forefront of discussion Saturday at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival's annual Writers Panel featuring behind-the-keyboard talent involved with some of the year's most celebrated films, all of them nominated for Academy Awards for their work. With "American Sniper" lighting up the box office and a tempest swirling around who Chris Kyle was, screenwriter and former actor Jason Hall claimed his work wasx was a willful dissection of a soldier "back home, but not back." Moderator Anne Thompson framed a question regarding negative response to the film quite favorably for Hall, calling it a "Rorschach" reflective of personal politics, so anything regarding Kyle's reported racism wasn't directly addressed. But Hall did say that the late soldier's memoir should be considered in a certain context. "This book is out in the world, so people think this is Chris Kyle," he said. "But this guy was back from the war,...

Only one of this year’s adapted screenplay nominees isn’t adapted from a book, and that’s Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash, which is adapted from his short film of the same name that took home the jury prize for short film from the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. The other four adaptations all come from books, three non-fiction and one fiction.
American Sniper is based on Chris Kyle’s (portrayed in the film by Bradley Cooper) autobiography of the same name, which he wrote with Scott McEwan and Jim DeFelice.
The Imitation Game is adapted from Alan Turing: The Enigma, written by Andrew Hodges, a mathematician and author. Turing is played by Benedict Cumberbatch in the film.

The Imitation Game features Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing, a mathematician and computer science pioneer who, along with his fellow code-breakers, broke the Nazi Enigma code to help end World War II. Though Turing was hailed as a hero, he was eventually arrested and prosecuted for homosexuality, along with 49,000 other British men and women. Turing chose to be chemically castrated rather than face imprisonment, so he could continue his work, and it is believed that he committed suicide a few years later. Queen Elizabeth II posthumously pardoned Turing in 2013.
On Jan. 21, Stephen Fry led a discussion about the The Imitation Game following a screening of the film for BAFTA voters, discussed Queen Elizabeth’s pardon and suggested that the 49,000 persecuted men and women should be as well. Chad Griffin, the president of Human Rights Campaign, which is honoring The Imitation Game at its Human Rights Gala on Jan.

If you're betting on "Boyhood" to win big at the upcoming Academy Awards, think again! Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" was deemed to be the big Oscar frontrunner but a double-dose of guild awards over the weekend tamed those prospects down. First, the Producers Guild of America gave their top honor to Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Birdman," and the Screen Actors Guild followed suit!
"Birdman" took home the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award! But, since the movie is about acting, this award is just fitting.
My biggest surprise, and it'a welcome surprise indeed, was "The Theory of Everything's" Eddie Redmayne taking home the Outstanding Male Actor trophy. Sorry Michael Keaton! I think Redmayne truly gave the Performance of the Year award!
The usual suspects took home the movie acting awards with wins for Julianne Moore for Best Actress in "Still Alice," J.K. Simmons for Best Supporting Actor for "Whiplash,...

Thelma Adams chats with Best Actress frontrunner Julianne Moore ("Still Alice") in a compelling profile: "One of the script’s central attractions was that Ms. Moore’s character drives the narrative, which is currently rare for women in Hollywood. Said Ms. Moore, 'This is a subjective story about a woman’s journey through a degenerative disease; why wouldn’t I do it? When do you get this opportunity?' Another element of Alice’s experience to which Ms. Moore connected was the sense that it’s been a challenge and a struggle for her generation of women to rise in their careers, whether it’s as a professor or an actress." Working Title producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are Oscar perennials ("Les Mis," "Atonement," "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy," "Anna Karenina"). Both are in the Oscar race, along with the film's director James Marsh (Oscar-winning doc "Man on Wire," "Shadow Dancer") and New Zealand-born screenwriter and Hawking obsessive Anthony McCarten, who nurtured for many years his adaptation of Jane Hawking's memoir "Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen Hawking." I interviewed Redmayne and Jones in Toronto right after their movie's rousing debut (video below).
