Gavemic was born and brought up in Pondicherry. He learned the ropes of photography from the age of 11 at his grandfather's photo studio. He served in Dharamshala for 3 years and returned to Pondicherry to pursue his interests in photography.
He came to the film industry join with P. C. Sreeram and Santosh Sivan have always been big inspirations for Gavemic. P.C. Sreeram taught him the basics of cinematography for a while after that Santosh Sivan taught him about the aesthetics of cinematography, craftsmanship, the role of a cinematographer among other things. Santosh Sivan also gave Gavemic exposure to the other departments of filmmaking, particularly sound during his tenure as an assistant from 2001 to 2004. Gavemic got to work on documentaries, feature films and commercials during his tutelage from Santosh Sivan.
In 2005-2006, Gavemic branched out as a freelance cameraman assisting leading cinematographers in many commercials and films, including Mahesh Babu's Khaleja (Telugu) directed by Trivikram Srinivas. From 2007 to 2012, he worked as an independent cameraman in corporate films, documentaries and commercials.
In 2012, Gavemic started his first feature film as a cinematographer, Mastram (Hindi),. In 2013, he began working on Karthik Subbaraj's 'musical gangster story' Jigarthanda (Tamil) which remains his most famous work till date.. has received universal acclaim. Then, work on Nil Battey Sannata (Hindi) began in 2014, followed by its Tamil version Amma Kanakku. Both the films released in 2016, with a couple of months spaced in between. Bareilly Ki Barfi (Hindi) is also a noteworthy film in Gavemic's career. This enjoyable love triangle, brimming with UP nativity, was one of the successful Bollywood releases in 2017.
