Laura Linney, Ben Semanoff and Justin Kurzel have all signed on to direct multiple episodes of the upcoming Netflix limited series “Black Rabbit.”
The trio will each direct two episodes of the series, which was picked up at Netflix in March. It will mark a reunion for Linney and “Black Rabbit” co-lead Jason Bateman, who previously starred as Wendy and Marty Byrde in the Netflix crime drama “Ozark” for four seasons. Semanoff also directed episodes of “Ozark.” Jude Law will also star in “Black Rabbit.” Law, Kurzel, and “Black Rabbit” co-creator Zach Baylin have also collaborated on the upcoming true crime film “The Order.”
The official logline for the series states that it follows “the owner of a New York City hotspot (Law) who allows his turbulent brother (Bateman) back in his life, only to realize he’s opened the door to escalating dangers that threaten to bring down everything he’s built.

The horror comedy series Shining Vale premiered on Starz back in March of 2022, then the second season reached the airwaves this past October. Unfortunately, there won’t be a season 3, as Variety reports that the show has been cancelled for the most common reason a show gets cancelled: it “did not find a large enough audience to continue.” But Starz is going further than just cancelling this show, as they’re also going to be scrubbing it from their archives. “Not only will the show be cut by the network, the first two seasons will be removed from the Starz streaming service at the end of the year.“

Starz has canceled its horror-comedy Shining Vale after two seasons.
The series, starring Courteney Cox as a woman who begins seeing and communicating with ghosts, finished its second (and now final season) on Dec. 1. In addition to canceling the show, Starz will also remove Shining Vale from its streaming library at the end of the month.
Jeff Astrof, who co-created Shining Vale with Sharon Horgan, shared news of the show’s end on social media Wednesday. “This show gave me unrelenting joy to work on. Not a single bad day. Please watch the Starz (turns out, Limited) series Shining Vale before 12/31,” he wrote.
Shining Vale earned generally positive reviews for its first season, which premiered in March 2022. It earned a renewal in May of that year, with season two premiering in October 2023. It was less successful in drawing viewers; sources say that was ultimately behind the decision to both cancel...

Starz has canceled Shining Vale after two seasons, Deadline has confirmed. Sources close to production revealed that the Courteney Cox- and Greg Kinnear-led series “did not find a large enough audience” to continue.
Both seasons also are set to be removed from the streamer’s library.
Sources said producer Warner. Bros. TV tried to sell the series elsewhere but did not succeed.
Season 1 of the series from creators Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan followed Pat (Cox) and Terry Phelps (Kinnear), a married couple who cash in their life savings and move from a cramped Brooklyn apartment to an old Victorian mansion in Connecticut, as a last-ditch effort to save their marriage after Pat’s torrid affair with the handyman. Their kids Gaynor and Jake are pissed, and as disconnected as teenagers can get. Pat is losing her grip on them, and Terry doesn’t see that Pat might...

After just two seasons, the Courteney Cox-starring horror series “Shining Vale” has been given the axe by Starz, and that’s not even the worst news about the show this afternoon.

Warning: This story contains spoilers from “Shining Vale” Season 2, Episode 1.
Courteney Cox’s Pat Phelps got out of a mental institution during the “Shining Vale” Season 2 premiere, but she’s clearly not out of the woods following her nervous breakdown (or demonic possession?) in Season 1.
The Starz horror comedy — created by Jeff Astrof (“Trial & Error”) and “Bad Sisters” scribe Sharon Horgan — followed up on the shocking events from the Season 1 finale, including Pat succumbing to the influence of demon Rosemary (Mira Sorvino) and axing her husband Terry (Greg Kinnear) in the head. The violence led to her children Gaynor (Gus Birney) and Jake (Dylan Gage) having her committed at the local asylum for a year.
But the premiere kicked off with a disheveled Pat being asked to leave treatment after only four months, once funds from her medical insurance ran out. Though she attempts to stay focused on her sanity,...

Adapted from the 2015 novel by Katherine Center, Netflix’s “Happiness for Beginners” largely takes place in the wilderness, where different kinds of people are forced to bond while braving the elements as they hike the Appalachian Trail. Led by “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “The Office” alum Ellie Kemper, the gaggle of goofballs provides laughs of all kinds as well as some heartfelt moments.
Zealous camp guide Bennett (Ben Cook) keeps everything interesting, especially when he scolds Helen (Kemper) for her careless mistakes on the hike and praises Jake (Luke Grimes) for all of his perfect moves in setting up and taking down camp. Nico Santos and Gus Birney even more humor to this romantic comedy story.
Here’s who plays who in “Happiness for Beginners”:
Helen (Ellie Kemper)
Ellie Kemper portrays Helen, who wants to start over after she divorces her husband. She experienced infidelity and a miscarriage during their marriage.

Plot: Helen has always lived her life as far from the edge as possible. Finding herself newly divorced and a little lost, Helen decides she needs a reset and signs up for the “Adventure of a Lifetime!” The adventure is a backcountry survival course hiking the Appalachian Trail with a group of oddball strangers. From the beginning, Helen’s plan to be the best hiker is tested and she finds more than just herself in the wilderness.
Review: Call them schmaltzy, cheesy, dopey, or whatever other of Snow White’s pals you like, but romantic comedies tend to earn a bad rap. For every classic romcom like When Harry Met Sally or Notting Hill, there are countless of cliche and rote takes on the genre out there. With the popularity of Lifetime and Hallmark original movies, it has become increasingly challenging for quality romantic films that are also funny to...

Vicky Wight’s “Happiness for Beginners” asks a question that it answers with more authority than just about any other film I’ve ever seen: Can something still be considered a Hallmark movie if it was made by Netflix? Legally, not so much. In every other sense, however, there’s no longer even a shred of doubt.
A flat and glossy film about a newly divorced woman who decides to walk the pain away on the Appalachian Trail (a two-week excursion that finds her tripping over tree trunks and falling for a hunky ex-doctor who looks like the human manifestation of a Home Depot), this veritable “Eat, Pray, Hike” leaves no trace of originality or dramatic consequence. The advantages it has over the likes of “We Wish You a Married Christmas” and “Royally Ever After” are twofold: A likable cast, and dignified source material.

The premise of Vicky Wight’s Happiness for Beginners sounds like a promising invitation to indulge in an offbeat romantic comedy. It’s a Netflix offering with Hallmark Channel roots: A 30something woman embarks on a journey through the woods to recover from her divorce. What will she find on her sojourn? A renewed sense of hope? Confidence? Romance?
If we stick to the rules of the genre, our heroine Helen (Ellie Kemper) will have it all. Peace lies in the towering trees of upstate New York, where her wilderness survival course takes place. Hope looks like the bonds she makes with her fellow campers. Love takes the shape of a familiar face who helps her remember a past self. In exchange for our attention, we will be rewarded with a couple worth rooting for and learn some truths about life. We might even consider checking out Katherine Center’s novel,...

Sitcom star Ellie Kemper gets the chance to subvert her usually chipper screen persona in “Happiness for Beginners,” writer-director Vicky Wright’s third feature and — following 2020’s Leslie Bibb starrer “The Lost Husband” — her second adaptation of a Katherine Center novel. Kemper plays dour divorcee Helen, who as the film opens is about to head off on a group hiking vacation, in the hope that it might snap her out of her post-split blues. Unbeknownst to Helen, her brother’s hunky doctor friend Jake (Luke Grimes) has booked himself onto the same trip, for reasons that are crystal-clear to the audience from the moment an exasperated Helen tells him, “God, you’re so annoying!”
We can tell immediately that we are operating under the jurisdiction of romantic comedy rules from the fact that Helen does not find Jake appearing unannounced on her trip — with only a thinly sketched excuse for...

"If you like him, just tell him." Netflix has revealed the official trailer for a romantic comedy "adventure" called Happiness For Beginners, made by an Irish filmmaker named Vicky Wright. Netflix will release the film streaming starting at the end of July, if anyone needs something light and fun for an emotional boost nowadays. Helen has always lived her life as far from the edge as possible. Newly divorced, she joins a quirky group of strangers on a survival course for the "Adventure of a Lifetime" with the hope of learning how to live - and love - again. She discovers through this experience that sometimes, you have to get really lost in order to find yourself. Happiness For Beginners stars Ellie Kemper, Luke Grimes, Nico Santos, Blythe Danner, Ben Cook, Shayvawn Webster, Esteban Benito, Gus Birney, and Julia Shiplett. This looks nicely easy going & uplifting to watch, especially with Kemper brightening up every frame.

Earlier this month, members of the Screen Actors Guild voted to authorize a strike if their negotiating committee doesn’t reach an agreement on a new contract with major Hollywood studios by June 30. SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher released a video message this week with an update on the negotiations, telling members, “We are having an [sic] extremely productive negotiations that are laser focused on all of the crucial issues you told us are most important to you. Our projected identities—and the constant performance inherent in presenting ourselves—fuel the surrealist philosophy of Ted Schaefer’s Giving Birth to a Butterfly. The filmmaker’s directorial debut, from a script he co-wrote with author Patrick Lawler, delves into a psychedelic psychology of what truly constitutes “the self” (very fitting for a collaborative duo who met through a mutual therapist). Giving Birth to a Butterfly largely consists of a roadtrip odyssey shared by Diana (Annie Parisse), a pharmacist stuck in an unfulfilling marriage to aspiring chef Daryl (Paul Sparks), and Marlene (Gus Birney), a heavily pregnant young woman who’s dating Diana’s son Drew […]
