Just in time for the scariest day of the year (unless you’re Justin Timberlake…that day came earlier this week with Brit‘s book), Apple TV+ is set to unleash the The Enfield Poltergeist, a genre-defying four-part series that exhumes the historic 1977-79 haunting of the UK’s Hodgson family. You may know the story as it was adapted in 2016’s The Conjuring 2, but you’ve never seen it told in such deep detail. Thanks to a curious British press at the time and the efforts of paranormal investigator Maurice Grosse, the Enfield case is one of the most-documented accounts of paranormal activity. The tale of a supernatural entity attacking young Janet Hodgson gripped the nation and sold millions of papers. That provided director Jerry Rothwell with a trove of photos and recordings from investigative interviews. “We were interested that this extensive archival record existed of a situation...

It was late November, 2016 when I visited the set of The Conjuring 2 (directed by James Wan). The reason I never wrote about it for Clothes on Film or anywhere else was because of my official role on the day: I was playing an extra (or background artist if you like) during the film’s Maida Vale pub scene. Specifically this is the moment when real life husband and wife paranormal investigator team, Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) meet with noted experts in their field to discuss the validity of their current case, aka the Enfield poltergeist. I made the finished cut, by the skin of my teeth I imagine. If you are so inclined, look out for a lightly moustachioed fella with curly hair sitting at the bar. Yes, that’s me.

Paranormal Investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren were never that deeply involved with the real life paranormal case which took place on 284 Green Street, Enfield — a borough in London, England. The Conjuring 2 is a compression of a few facts from the investigation and, as with most movie adaptations, never truly take into account all the details. Huge liberties are taken and I'm sure the real Janet Hodgson (played in the film by Madison Wolfe) does not approve of certain alterations. The case lasted for about two years instead of weeks. The investigators who spent months on this case were Spr members Guy Lyon Playfair and Maurice Grosse — the latter barely gets enough of a spotlight. While this group of researchers are modestly credited, the shift in who are the heroes is more disheartening in the long run. Psychology professor Anita Gregory received a nod in this fictional account and John Beloff is ignored. As for who were involved requires looking into the documents filed...

The term “master of horror” is one that gets thrown around a little too loosely sometimes, but there are a precious few filmmakers who very much embody that prestigious label. If he didn’t achieve that status prior to 2013, James Wan sure did with the release of The Conjuring. The film, touted by many as Wan’s masterpiece, was indeed quite masterful, and with it the Aussie filmmaker brilliantly set the stage for a franchise built around the case files of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.

James Wan’s terrifying sequel The Conjuring 2 has now arrived in theaters, and we recently caught up with two of the franchise’s newcomers, Frances O’Connor and Madison Wolfe, at the press day for the film.
During the roundtable interview, both actresses discussed their respective characters Peggy and Janet Hodgson, and Wolfe chatted about meeting her real-life counterpart on set and how that influenced her performance. O’Connor also talked about working alongside her younger co-stars, and the pair reflected on what they (and their vocal chords) endured while collaborating with Wan on The Conjuring 2.
Can you both talk about these troubled characters that you play, and if there was anything you found research-wise while preparing for these roles?
Frances O’Connor: There is so much stuff online that you can access in terms of real footage.
Madison Wolfe: Oh yeah, there are tons of videos...

Synopsis: In 1977, paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) come out of a self-imposed sabbatical to travel to Enfield, a borough in north London. There, they meet Peggy Hodgson (Frances O'Connor), an overwhelmed single mother of four who tells the couple that something evil is in her home. Ed and Lorraine believe her story when the youngest daughter starts to show signs of demonic possession. As the Warrens try to help the besieged girl, they become the next target of the malicious spirits.

The Conjuring series has developed into probably the apex of contemporary popular horror cinema, about as skillfully made as one can expect a thematically unchallenging series of jump scare setups and payoffs to be. There are times when The Conjuring 2 is an absolute blast, the paranormal chaos hitting Evil Dead levels of physicality. But while I’d like to think there’s knowing humor in, say, a smash cut from a family beholding a dresser prowling across a room of its own accord to them hastily fleeing their house, the story is for the most part strained toward a dampening seriousness.
Part of this lies in the film’s ridiculous 134-minute runtime. After a certain point, surely even necking teens would tire of this, right? A prologue involving the Amityville Horror is utterly superfluous. There’s around a solid hour of the Hodgson family being terrorized by some kind...

Director James Wan has done it again and created another horror movie masterpiece with The Conjuring 2. Wan has made one great movie after another, and it seems like he’s perfected the craft of bringing horrific and nightmarish stories to life on the big screen. Wan is one of my favorite directors working in Hollywood today because he has yet to disappoint me.
Judging from what I saw in the trailers for The Conjuring 2, I knew the movie was going to be solid. The first movie was a fantastic film, and I’ll admit, I was a little worried that this sequel wouldn't be as good and hit the bar that was set with the first film, but I’m happy to say that it did and even raised it!

“Less Ed and Lorraine” and “more cheese and cardboard” is precisely the last direction a sequel to the classy original should have gone in. Yet here we are. I’m “biast” (pro): liked the first film, love Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
The first Conjuring movie, in 2013, distinguished itself in a genre full of cardboard characters and predictable jumpscares by approaching horror from a more psychologically incisive perspective than we’re used to seeing. The real-life “ghostbusters” Ed and Lorraine Warren were almost certainly con artists who duped the credulous, but the dramatized depiction of them in The Conjuring did at least make us feel that they believed, via the fantastic pairing of the always marvelous Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as the couple, who were deeply warm and engaging. The film follows along as the Warrens learn about a case involving a family plagued by the so-called Enfield poltergeist. (The family lived in a north London neighborhood known as Enfield.) What was happening? In this clip, young Janet Hodgson (Madison Wolfe) learns how difficult it is keep a chair where you want it when a paranormal creature is present. Warner Bros. has released a new featurette for The Conjuring 2 that might actually send chills down your spine. The video reportedly contains actual audio that was recorded by Lorraine and Ed Warren of Janet Hodgson, who was possessed by an evil spirit. The video isn’t very long, but it’s incredibly haunting and strange to listen to. This kind of stuff has always fascinated me, and it’s pretty cool that these recordings are being allowed to be shared with the public to help promote James Wan's horror film.

Universal Pictures has released a crazy creepy featurette for James Wan's upcoming horror film The Conjuring 2. This film tells the true story of a family who was terrorized by a poltergeist, which became known as The Enfield Poltergeist. This featurette is called "Strange Happenings in Enfield," and it focuses on the true story aspect of the film. It includes interviews with the victims who were actually involved with this nightmarish event, including Janet Hodgson, the girl who was actually possessed, and of course, legendary paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren.
One of the creepiest and most unsettling parts of the featurette was listening to an actual recording of the possessed 11-year-old girl. It's pretty damn haunting. It definitely adds some credence to the movie. Of course, the movie is going to embellish the story, but I would love to see a documentary that tells all the gritty details of this paranormal event.

The Conjuring 2 is coming out soon and if you weren.t already getting chills from the trailers maybe this new featurette will do the trick. It goes into the real-life story the film is based on, in which two young sisters are haunted in their home in Enfield, England by some kind of evil spirit. I won.t debate whether or not this family was really haunted or not, because - real or fake - I.m a little creeped out. That.s mainly from the footage of the movie, but it.s a good touch having the real people involved in the story playing parallel to the film. It.s legitimately freaky when Janet Hodgson (the girl who was possessed) shakes with fear while remembering what happened, and then seeing the girl in the film get spooked a man who jumps out of the darkness. Also, why did...

Hello again, dear readers. I hope the year is off to a good start for all of you. It’s coming to you later than I intended, but here’s the first Trailer Trashin’ column of 2016. Now let’s take a look at the teaser trailer for director James Wan’s upcoming horror sequel The Conjuring 2.
Premise: Husband and wife paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) travel to north London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits.
My take: Ever since I first saw The Conjuring (2013), it’s been one of my favorite horror movies. Inspired by the work of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, it was a smartly written, sharply directed film with good scares, a talented cast playing characters we actually cared about, and which made good use of its period 1970s setting.
