Exclusive: We told you two nights ago that buyers were circling. Now the eagle has landed. Tom Hanks comedy A Man Called Otto has sold to Sony in a record EFM worldwide rights deal pegged around $60M.
Sony has taken global rights to the red-hot package from CAA Media Finance and is lining up a wide domestic theatrical release this Christmas, we understand.
Buyers have been clamouring for this one heading into the virtual EFM. There were multiple big offers on the table from studios, indies and a couple of streamers but it ultimately came down to Sony vs international buyers in a close run thing. In terms of EFM records, the deal moves past the $55M Netflix paid last year for Christian Bale thriller The Pale Blue Eye. A big reason Sony got the film is its continuing commitment to theatrical. The film will open year end in around 2000 screens.

Forster’s directing credits include “Neverland,” which was nominated for a best picture Academy Award; “Christopher Robin”; “World War Z”; “Quantum of Solace”; “The Kite Runner”; and “Stranger Than Fiction.” He will direct “White Bird” from a screenplay by Mark Bomback.

The Disney Studios lot morphed into the Hundred Acre Wood on Monday night as stars gathered for the world premiere of the live-action “Christopher Robin.”
A garden-themed red carpet lined the entrance to the theater, with Winnie, Piglet, Eeyore, and Tigger sitting in lawn chairs at the start of the carpet.
“Christopher Robin” takes place after the eponymous character (Ewan McGregor) has grown up and lost touch with the important things in life. His childhood friends – Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, and Piglet – venture into the real world to help Christopher rediscover the joys of family, friendship, and appreciating the simple pleasures of life.
That’s a message that’s very relevant today, McGregor told Variety on the red carpet. “I felt very much it was a timely movie for me,” he said. “I felt that way before I read when it when (director) Marc (Forster) described what he wanted...

Will Smith and director Marc Forster have teamed up to acquire Telepool GmbH, the German licensing and distribution company that is a major European player in theatrical and multi-platform distribution. Beyond that preexisting business, Telepool will become a development, financing and distribution partner for projects involving the duo. The acquisition was made by The Smith Family Circle, Will and Jada Smith’s Family Office, and Elysian Fields, a Zurich-based investment holding company co-founded by Forster. Purchase price was not disclosed.
The team-up and acquisition target seems unusual, but both Smith and Forster are entrepreneurial multi-hyphenates who are taking the initiative at a disruptive moment to diversify and better control the product they generate in German-speaking territories. Telepool’s core business is the acquisition, sale and promotion of narrative and gaming content as well as merchandising and licensing of publishing and excerpt rights for German-speaking territories.
