This year’s awards-contending films offer a treasure trove of crafts that includes transformations, exquisite sets, lavish costumes, memorable scores and songs and immersive cinematography. The contenders range from newcomers to legends — Variety breaks down the categories below.
Makeup And Hair
Prosthetic makeup designer Kazu Hiro could very well walk away with his third Oscar for his work on Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro.” Transforming Cooper into the legendary composer Leonard Bernstein consisted of five different stages to gradually age the actor. And the guild as well as the Academy love a transformation.
Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” could be a contender in this area, following in the footsteps of the first two films that landed guild nominations. The sheer volume of prosthetics and wigs went into building the characters such as the humanimals, the hybrid of humanoid and animal, and the villain, the High Evolutionary, played by Chukwudi Iwuji.

The following post contains spoilers for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."
The final chapter of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" saga introduced us to the character of Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), and while fans debate whether we got to see enough of him, you have to admit that he is visually great. I mean, look at those golden locks! Of course, his hair isn't the only thing I love, but it's a big part of the character. Look up any images of Adam Warlock from the comics, and his golden mane is very much a part of his costume, either blowing in the wind or falling artfully into his eyes.
As it turns out, the hair on Poulter was no easy task. We civilians may be able to get away with a little gold hairspray from Spirit Halloween to recreate the costume for Comic-Con, but Hair Department Head Cassie Russek...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” now playing in theaters.
Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” was a huge undertaking for makeup head Alexei Dmitriew and hair department head Cassie Russek, who used over 22,500 prosthetics, 500 wigs and 130 facial hairpieces to create the movie’s galactic creatures. That number broke the world record for most prosthetics used in a film, previously held by “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”
From Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock to villain The High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji) to the new hybrid humanimals, the duo were tasked with creating original looks as the Guardians set out on their newest mission.
It took a village of 75 makeup artists on set to complete the looks — sometimes there would be 90. “We had two people per prosthetic so we could just keep the times down,” Dmitriew says. “On this, we used 22,542 prosthetics, 117 pairs of contact lenses,...

It might sound cliché, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is literally out of this world.
The film, which premieres on May 5, set a world record for the most makeup appliances used in a single film with more than 23,000 prosthetics used across more than 1,000 actors. It beats the record previously held by The Grinch, and it far surpasses the 1,200 prosthetics used for the first Guardians film.
While the crew went into the movie expecting large-scale makeup and prosthetics, they didn’t exactly plan to set a world record.
“We always knew that it was going to be a lot because when you’re reading the script, and you’re designing the characters you’re kind of like, ‘This could be a big movie…’ I don’t think any of us truly understood the the sheer volume of work that was done until we were there,” Legacy FX co-founder Lindsay MacGowan...

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” got a big boost in the Oscar race for Best Makeup and Hairstyling by winning both of its bids at the guild honors on April 3. The Netflix film was honored for its period makeup and period hairstyling at the 8th annual Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Saturday.
One of its Oscar rivals – “Pinocchio” — claimed the special effects prize. Two of the other Oscar nominees were shut out as “Hillbilly Elegy” lost all three of its races here and “Mank” was blanked twice over. The fifth contender at the Academy Awards, “Emma,” was overlooked by the guild.
Conversely the other big winner at the Muahs Awards, “Bird of Prey,” was snubbed by the makeup and hairstyling branch of the academy. It won both contemporary categories here.

2021 Muah Awards: ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ and ‘Birds of Prey’ Are Top Makeup, Hairstyling Winners
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” captured the top period feature prizes for makeup and hairstyling at the 8th annual Muahs Guild Awards Saturday night, making it the prohibitive Oscar favorite for the dramatic transformation of Viola Davis as the titular pioneering blues singer. Davis, who landed her fourth Oscar nomination as the sexy, subversive Rainey — the most of any Black actress — was boldly uncompromising in demanding verisimilitude for Netflix’s adaptation of the August Wilson play. Davis was fitted with gold teeth, charcoal-like makeup, and a wig made of horsehair.
Winning both contemporary makeup and hairstyling feature honors at the virtual ceremony was Warner Bros./DC’s “Birds of Prey. He recreated the look of real wooden puppets for the titular hero (played by (Federico Ielapi) and his theater friends by using every prosthetic technique available.

After the cruelest year and amid the weirdest awards season in memory, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Birds of Prey applied two wins apiece to lead the film side of the eighth annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards.
With Birds of Prey not among the five nominees for Best Makeup & Hairstyling at the Academy Awards this month, Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom has emerged as the Oscar front-runner.
Pinocchio scored the night’s final prize for Best Special Make-Up Effects in a Feature at the virtual ceremony held Saturday.
On the TV side, the marquee winners included Bridgerton, The Crown, The Queen’s Gambit, The Mandalorian, Schitt’s Creek and Westworld.
The Kelly Clarkson Show and All That swept the respective make-up and hairstyling categories for Daytime Television and Children and Teen Programming. The night’s other double winners were Saturday Night Live and Hamilton.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Birds of Prey” each won two film awards at the 8th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards, which took place in a hybrid virtual gala on Saturday evening.
“Ma Rainey” won in the Best Period and/or Character Make-Up and Best Period Hair Styling and/or Character Hair Styling categories, while “Birds of Prey” took awards in the Best Contemporary Make-Up and Best Contemporary Hair Styling categories. “Pinocchio” won the final Muahs feature-film award, Best Special Make-Up Effects.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on February 18. But don’t look for four-time contender “Bill & Ted Face the Music” or three-timer “Mulan” on the list of Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling when that roster is revealed on March 15. They didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.
Of the 10 films that remain in the running at the Oscars, “Hillbilly Elegy” reaped three bids with the guild; “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Mank” earned two apiece; and “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey” and “Pinocchio” have one each.
The other four films shortlisted by the makeup artists and hair stylists branch of the academy — “Emma,” “The Glorias,”
“The Little Things” and “One Night in Miami” — were snubbed by the guild.

“Bill & Ted Face the Music” leads the way with four nominations in the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild nominations (IATSE Local 706). The film was nominated in contemporary makeup, special makeup effects, period/character makeup and contemporary hairstyling.
“Hillbilly Elegy,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Mulan” and “Mank” were also a few of the films to receive multiple nominations on the film side across categories. This bodes well for best hair and makeup Oscar frontrunners like “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and and “Hillbilly Elegy.” However, while leading in the guild, “Bill & Ted Face the Music” did not make the Oscar shortlist.
Winners for the 8th annual Muahs Guild Awards will be honored at a reimagined virtual gala on Saturday, April 3.
