Amazon has ordered seven new originals from down under as part of its latest Australian originals slate.
Deadline revealed earlier this evening that Sigourney Weaver is starring in and exec producing a series based on The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart. This will be joined by a slew of new shows including a bushfire feature doc from director Eva Orner and exec producer Cate Blanchett.
It comes as the streamer revealed that it has invested $150M in local productions in Australia since 2019.
Burning, which is Amazon’s first Australian Original feature-length documentary, looks at the deadly Australian bushfires of 2019-2020, known as ‘Black Summer’. Burning is an exploration of what happened as told from the perspective of victims of the fires, activists and scientists. Produced by Propagate Content, Dirty Films and Amazon Studios, Burning will launch in 2021. Orner, who helmed Netflix’s Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator, directs and exec produces alongside Blanchett.

Nick Boshier.
Nick Boshier and co-creators Anthony MacFarlane and Jarod Green are developing a long-form series of their animated comedy Beached Az.
That will be a sequel to Beached Aziversary, which Robot Army produced last year for Facebook, YouTube and Instagram, marking the 10th anniversary since Beached Az premiered on the ABC.
The 10 x 3′ online series followed the bizarre adventures of a philosophical, Kiwi-accented whale and his cocaine-addicted, murderous seagull friend. The unlikely couple had a steamy love affair which spawned a love child.
As part of the re-boot, the team launched a beer range, Beached Az Brew, in partnership with Sydney-based brewery Modus Operandi. A significant percentage of profits goes to charities which clean up beaches around Australia.
As lead writer Boshier is crafting the treatment and pilot for the Beached Az TV series with David Webster’s Cheeky Little Media and Ian Collie’s Easy Tiger.

Nick Boshier.
Nick Boshier knows quite a bit about crafting comedy for the millennial generation, cutting his comedic teeth in the flourishing days of YouTube with the viral surprise Trent from Punchy.
The mock-reality satire which hit YouTube in 2008 has since clocked 8.6 million views. Boshier and his co-conspirator on Trent, Anthony MacFarlane, then partnered with Jarod Green to create animated phenomenon Beached Az via their production entity The Handsomity Institute.
That was ten years ago and the crudely drawn, philosophical, Kiwi-accented whale and his seagull friend have since been reanimated to take on ocean health and sustainability in a new ten-part series, Beached Aziversary, for YouTube.
“Ten years is a unique denomination; it’s an anchor of some description and it holds significance. But when we first discussed the ten year Aziversary thing internally we questioned, why the dickens are we doing it?,” Boshier tells If.

‘Nice Shorts.’
Nick Boshier and Jazz Twemlow are leading the team of comedy writers/performers who will create Nice Shorts for Bunya Entertainment.
The online sketch comedy of 16 episodes, ranging from 3-10 minutes, will tap into national and international conversations to create videos for weekly release via social platforms.
Apart from Boshier and Twemlow the team includes Nazeem Hussain (Legally Brown), Greta Lee Jackson (Wham Bam Thank You Ma’am), Penny Greenhalgh (The Lost Tapes) and Bjorn Stewart.
The Bunya Group is not looking to monetize the low-budget online series, instead using it as the first opportunity to work with comedy creatives and as the first foray into comedy for the new banner Bunya Entertainment.
“Like the dramas we’re best known for, the quality of writing in Nice Shorts will be the hallmark of this show,” says Bunya Group CEO Sophia Zachariou.
Bunya Entertainment is developing seven narrative comedies including one with Adam Zwar.
