Over the past week or so, Apple Music has slowly unveiled the titles included in its list of the “100 best albums.” Today, the top 10 albums were revealed, with Miss Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill claiming the No. 1 spot. Rounding out the top five are Michael Jackson’s Thriller; The Beatles’ Abbey Road; Prince’s Purple Rain; and Frank Ocean’s Blonde.
The top 10 also includes Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life; Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city (Deluxe Version); Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black; Nirvana’s Nevermind; and Beyoncé’s Lemonade.
In all honestly, it’s a pretty safe top 10, especially considering the drama that unfolded when Apple unveiled picks 11-20 and slotted Adele’s 21 at No. 15 and Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) at No. 18 — ahead of albums like Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds,...

Charli Xcx started to think about what it would be like to have a baby. The 31-year-old has always been an artist of extremes, a main character thriving on an emotional and creative knife edge. But the timing wasn’t about craving novelty, on this occasion. She’s now in her thirties and in a happy relationship of equals with The 1975’s George Daniel.
An alternative reality, one in which she would be the supporting character, was presented to her when she went to Stockholm to visit her songwriting collaborator Noonie Bao,...

When Julia Fox debuted her single, “Down the Drain,” at Charli Xcx’s Boiler Room DJ set last February, there were essentially two reactions: 1) wait, Julia Fox is making music now?, and 2) of course Julia Fox is making music now.
Not only is Julia Fox making music now (and not only does it kind of slay), but she also just dropped the video for “Down the Drain,” exclusively debuting on Rolling Stone. Directed by cowriter and producer Ben Draghi, the video is a showcase for all of Fox’s personae,...

Charli Xcx is back with “360,” her latest single and the opening track of her forthcoming album, Brat.
Featuring a percussive synth-scape that’s a signature sound of Brat producer A. G. Cook, “360” sees Charli deliver an infectious melody with crisp, hyperpop vocals. On the second verse, she name-drops Cook (“You gon’ jump if A. G. made it”) and for the chorus, she sings a memorable refrain shouting out her good friend, Julia Fox, with lyrics, “When you’re in the mirror, do you like what you see?/ When you’re in the mirror, you’re just looking at me/ I’m everywhere, I’m so Julia.”
Arriving alongside the single is a cinematic music video starting with a sketch about Charli attending a meeting to “fulfill the prophecy of finding a new ‘Hot Internet Girl,'” along with Rachel Sennott, Chloe Cherry, Richie Shazam, Gabbriette (from the band Nasty Cherry), and Fox herself.

So much of modern music feels like it was created by a computer algorithm to appeal to as many people as possible while having little artistic value. Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism is the antithesis of that. The album’s producer discussed his history of working with avant-garde musicians and why he brought the same energy to working with the “Levitating” singer.

Charli Xcx has confirmed past rumors that she was working on writing music for a potential new Britney Spears album at one point.
However, the English singer-songwriter admitted in a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live that she wasn’t too sure how involved Spears was in the process, as the “Toxic” singer had previously shut down rumors on social media.
“Um, so. Well, yes, but, it leaked to the press,” Charli Xcx said, responding to a caller’s question. “Britney then did this post where she was like, ‘I don’t have random people write for me.’ I was like, okay, go off! So I don’t know that she was part of the process.”
In January, Spears took to her Instagram to set the record straight, writing, “They keep saying I’m turning to random people to do a new album … I will never return to the...

Archival Looks, Recycled Materials and Lab Grown Jewels Puts Spotlight on Sustainability at Met Gala
Fashion’s biggest night is star-studded event all around — usually with a focus on new clothes — but this year a less talked-about topic joined the conversation at the Met Gala in a big way: sustainability.
Monday night’s event kicked off with La La Anthony, a red carpet co-host for Vogue‘s livestream, proudly declaring that she was wearing “pre-loved vintage accessories” from eBay. The announcement set the stage for some of the celebrities who Anthony and her co-hosts, Gwendoline Christie and Ashley Graham, interviewed throughout the night who also showcased their sustainable red-carpet choices.
Designer Stella McCartney was joined by actress and model Cara Delevingne, singer FKA Twigs and singer Ed Sheeran on the Met Gala red carpet. The British designer created custom looks for each of her guests, all made from 100 percent sustainable materials.
The designer’s brand collaborated with sustainable jewelry company Vrai for Delevingne’s and Sheeran’s looks.

The rumors about Charli Xcx writing songs during sessions for Britney Spears were initially dismissed by the pop icon at the beginning of the year. But during a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, the musician clarified that the part about her writing music was true — what wasn’t true, however, was the narrative that Spears had recorded any of them.
“It leaked to the press. Britney then did this post where she was like, ‘I don’t have random people write for me.’ And I was like, ‘Oh.

Barbie dolls have had a shockingly huge impact on pop music. Perhaps the most famous example is Dua Lipa‘s “Dance the Night” from the soundtrack of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Lipa explained what she was trying to accomplish with the song and how she felt making it.
Dua Lipa’s ‘Dance the Night’ is 1 of many songs inspired by Barbie
For a piece of plastic, Barbie is surprisingly musically influential. She inspired Aqua’s classic bubblegum hit “Barbie Girl” and its various derivatives. In addition, Nicki Minaj calls her fans “Barbies” and repeatedly references the doll in her songs and music videos. Avant-garde director Todd Haynes directed Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, a film with no actors other than stop-motion animated Barbie dolls.
Perhaps the doll’s greatest musical moment was Barbie: The Album. The album served as the soundtrack for Gerwig’s Barbie and featured contributions from Minaj,...

Accordingly all the stars arrived in New York City donning the finest horticulture-inspired couture, with natural designs and floral garnishes abound. If the Britpop movement of the 1990s was defined by its brash celebration of authenticity, anti-commercialism, and, well, Britishness, the hyperpop movement of the 2010s was almost the total inverse. Characterized by heavy audio manipulation, cartoonishly catchy pop hooks, and gleefully artificial alter egos, the music released on A.G. Cook’s PC Music label openly embraced synthetic sounds and consumerist aesthetics. The title of Cook’s third album, Britpop, places these two movements in conversation with one another.
All music exists as a response to something that came before. Case in point: Britpop developed in the wake of the U.S. grunge explosion, which itself was a reaction to the extravagance of hair metal. That sort of push and pull is something that Cook has played with before—most notably on his 2020 cover of Tommy James and the Shondells’s “Crimson and Clover,” which Cook reimagined with massive saw synths and fuzzed-out guitars.

If you watched The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Wednesday night, you may have noticed the dome of the Ed Sullivan Theatre adorned with images of several dozen people, and wondered (to borrow a phrase from another favorite late-night show): “What up with that”?
The show was celebrating the start of Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month in partnership with the Asian American and Pacific Islander cultural collective Gold House. Those faces encircling the dome were all honorees on this year’s A100 list, which recognizes Asian Pacific leaders who have impacted American culture and society in the last year
Among the biggest names on this year’s A100 are Dev Patel, Keanu Reeves, Charli Xcx, Steve Aoki, and Celine Song.

A year ago, Legendary Entertainment’s remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death (get it Here) went into production in Louisiana, with Barbie Ferreira of the HBO series Euphoria, Dacre Montgomery of Netflix’s Stranger Things, Josie Totah of the recent Saved by the Bell revival, Jermaine Fowler of The Blackening, and singer Charli Xcx making up the cast. We haven’t heard a release date for this one yet, but it did just take a major step forward: it has gotten its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. They have announced that the Faces of Death remake has received an R rating for strong bloody violence and gore, sexual content, nudity, language and drug use.

Hey, remember that there’s a Faces of Death remake on the way from Legendary Entertainment and Cam filmmakers Isa Mazzei and Daniel Goldhaber?! It’s been a while since we’ve heard a peep about this one, but the film’s MPA rating has been handed in this week.
The upcoming Faces of Death remake is rated “R” for…
“Strong bloody violence and gore, sexual content, nudity, language and drug use.”
Musician Charli Xcx will make her feature debut in Faces of Death.
Dacre Montgomery (“Stranger Things”), Barbie Ferreira (“Euphoria”), Josie Totah (“Saved by the Bell”) and Aaron Holliday (Cocaine Bear) are also set to star.
How do you remake Faces of Death? It sounds like Mazzei and Goldhaber have come up with an interesting approach for this one. Here’s what we know about this mysterious project.

Last year the Grammys introduced a new category: Best Pop Dance Recording. The purpose of the category was to cleave the dance-oriented pop musicians out of the electronic categories and thus make it fairer for electronic DJs and producers who usually can’t compete against huge names like Lady Gaga or Beyoncé. The category seems to have been a success, giving space to acclaimed artists like Troye Sivan and Kylie Minogue to get on the Grammy stage; Minogue ultimately won for “Padam Padam.” While last year’s set of nominees was quite well-known, this year could produce an even more star-studded pack.

“Euphoria” breakout Hunter Schafer is playing yet another teen trying to outrun her familial drama, except this time, it’s a surreal matter of life or death. Schafer leads “Cuckoo,” written and directed by “Luz” filmmaker Tilman Singer.
Six years after Singer’s 2018 feature debut, “Cuckoo” centers on 17-year-old Gretchen (Schafer) who is forced to leave her American home to live with her father (Márton Csókás) in a resort in the German Alps with his new wife (Jessica Henwick) and family. Yet it’s her father’s boss Mr. Konig (Dan Stevens) and his obsession with Gretchen’s mute half-sister Alma (Mila Lieu) that unlocks a larger, more sinister presence at the resort. Gretchen becomes haunted by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family. Jan Bluthardt and Greta Fernandez also star in the horror film.

Over 200 artists including Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, Metro Boomin, and Pearl Jam have signed an open letter from the Artist Rights Alliance calling on artificial intelligence companies to cease using artists’ music without permission to train their AI tech.
“When used irresponsibly, AI poses enormous threats to our ability to protect our privacy, our identities, our music and our livelihoods,” the letter, whose signatories also included Stevie Wonder, Kacey Musgraves, Katy Perry and Imagine Dragons, said. “Some of the biggest and most powerful companies are, without permission, using our work to train AI models.

Once a rapidly growing Latin American economy, and fertile ground for influential indie pop and neoperreo movements, Chile has become the center of socio-political discord that’s swept the region over the last several years. Since October 2019, millions of Chileans have taken to the streets in waves of protests and civil unrest dubbed el estallido social, or the social outburst. Their goals: dismantle the neoliberal policies of the Seventies that fostered staggering income inequality, abandon the archaic Pinochet-era constitution, and draft a new magna carta to codify institutional gender parity...

Taylor Swift and Prince are two of the biggest pop stars in American history, but their musical styles could not be more different. Despite this, Swift compared one of the hit songs she wrote to Prince’s “Manic Monday.” Notably, Swift gave the song away to another pop icon.
Taylor Swift’s ‘This Is What You Came For’ was inspired by Prince’s ‘Manic Monday’
Every great pop star has written at least one hit song for another artist. For example, George Harrison co-wrote Ringo Starr’s “Photograph,” Kesha co-wrote Britney Spears’ “Till the World Ends,” and Charli Xcx co-wrote Selena Gomez’s “Same Old Love.” Swift checked that off of her pop star bucket list when she wrote Rihanna’s “This Is What You Came For” with Calvin Harris. At first, Swift was credited under the name Nils Sjöberg. At this point, her role in writing the song has been widely reported.
