Simon & Schuster, which Paramount Global recently sold to investment giant Kkr, has set a new board that include former top Disney exec Kareem Daniel and former TikTok COO V Pappas “as “it embarks on its journey as an independent standalone publisher,” said CEO Jonathan Karp.
Veteran publishing executive and investor Richard Sarnoff, chairman of media within Kkr’s Americas private equity business, will serve as board chairman. Other directors include Kkr executives Ted Oberwager and Chresten Knaff, and Madeline McIntosh, the former CEO of Penguin Random House U.S.
Daniel was exited from Disney after 18 years at the media giant along with his mentor at the company, former CEO Bob Chapek. He headed an unpopular Chapek-created division called Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution that was Bob Iger dismantled when he returned to the company in November of last year. Paramount has completed the $1.62 billion sale of book publisher Simon & Schuster to investment firm Kkr, nearly a year after a richer sale to Penguin Random House ran aground over regulatory issues.
The all-cash transaction, announced last August, makes Simon & Schuster a stand-alone private company and the only independent major trade publisher. Last year, a judge in an antitrust case ruled against the pending $2.2 billion acquisition by a direct competitor, citing monopoly concerns and negative potential impact on customers and other publishers. The deal was then officially jettisoned last November, with Bertelsmann’s Penguin Random House paying Paramount a $200 million breakup fee.
Simon & Schuster CEO Jonathan Karp will continue to lead the company, which was founded in 1924.
Paramount, like its large media rivals, is contending with a challenging operating environment in linear TV and motion pictures as it also battles to reach profitability in the ultra-competitive streaming market. Having rebranded...

After months of damaging news stories (personal and professional), dwindling poll numbers, and rising doubts from restive donors, Ron DeSantis’ big moment has finally arrived. The first Republican debate is here and, with it, a chance for the Florida governor to reclaim his vaunted status as DeFuture of DeParty.
There’s just one problem: debates have not, historically, been a very forgiving format for DeSantis.
For one thing, he just doesn’t come across as very likable. (An adviser who helped the former congressman prepare for a 2018 debate against Andrew Gillum...

After its $2 billion-plus agreement to sell Simon & Schuster fell apart last October, Paramount Global has found a new buyer for the book publishing giant at a slightly discounted all-cash price point of $1.62 billion.
Private equity firm Kkr has entered into an agreement to acquire the assets of Simon & Schuster, the companies said August 7. In opting to sell to a buyer not affiliated with the “Big Five” group of publishers — which includes prior suitor Penguin Random House along with HarperCollins, Hachette Book Group and Macmillan — Paramount appears to think this is the deal that can finally clear regulatory approval.
“We see a compelling opportunity to help Simon & Schuster become an even stronger partner to literary talent by investing in the expansion of the company’s capabilities and distribution networks,” stated Richard Sarnoff, chairman of media at Kkr.
Paramount CEO Bob Bakish added, “The proceeds will give Paramount additional financial flexibility...

Boy Meets World, starring Danielle Fishel, Ben Savage and Rider Strong, was a hit coming-of-age TV series that ran from 1993-2000. It provided plenty of young viewers on-screen proxies for their own ups and downs with adolescence and young adulthood. Without a doubt, the element that made the show so meaningful to so many was the connections between the characters.
It’s hard to imagine that the show almost didn’t include one of its most famous couples: Cory and Topanga.
On ‘Boy Meets World,’ Danielle Fishel played Topanga
Boy Meets World is remembered today for its core cast of characters. That includes best friends Cory (Ben Savage) and Shawn (Rider Strong), their teacher Mr. Feeny (William Daniels), and Cory’s brother Eric (Will Friedle). The list would not be complete without Cory’s long-time girlfriend and eventual wife, Topanga (Danielle Fishel).
Topanga was an important part of the series for its entire seven-year run.

Fox Entertainment’s ad-supported streamer Tubi has ordered the TV movie “Classmates,” from the wife and husband team of Danielle Fishel (“Boy Meets World”) and Jensen Karp. Fishel directed and Karp wrote the film, which will debut in 2023.
Anjelica Bette Fellini (“The French Dispatch”) and Kayden Muller-Janssen (“The Villains of Valley View”) star in the film as former high school classmates Anabella and Raury, who have their identities swapped on the first day of college due to a computer hack.
Per the logline: “Despite entirely different backgrounds, races, and personalities, Anabella convinces Raury to leave the mistake uncorrected. The decision to go with the flow creates a massive ripple effect when one of their parents’ shady dealings puts them both in danger. Together, the girls find themselves running for their lives and must put aside their differences if they want to survive. Of course, the best of enemies often become the best of friends,...

Paramount Global’s attempt to sell publisher Simon & Schuster to the owner of Penguin Random House has been blocked, a Washington D.C. judge ordered on Monday. The companies replied that they’re evaluating options and are looking to request an appeal.
“Upon review of the extensive record and careful consideration of the parties’ arguments, the Court finds that the United States has shown that ‘the effect of [the proposed merger] may be substantially to lessen competition’ in the market for the U.S. publishing rights to anticipated top-selling books,” U.S. Circuit Court Judge Florence Y. Pan wrote in a two-page order.
In response to the order, a Penguin Random House rep called the move a “setback” and pledged to appeal. “We strongly disagree with today’s decision, which is an unfortunate setback for readers and authors, and we will immediately request an expedited appeal,...
