This week also continues HBO’s compelling “The Last of Us,” an apocalyptic series based on the video game. The fourth episode will air this Sunday on HBO and HBO Max. Naturally, it feels apropos to continue the apocalypse theme in this week’s streaming picks.
While horror’s apocalypse starter often falls to zombies, these five apocalyptic movies showcase other means of humanity’s doom, from Gates of Hell to extraterrestrial takeovers.

Samantha Morton and Sennia Nanua are having a lot of fun this season as Catherine de Medici lures Rahima into her inner circle, gaining her trust while simultaneously educating her on the rules at court.
It's a psychological juxtaposition, to be sure.
Now, we've got an exclusive first look at The Serpent Queen Season 1 Episode 5, where Catherine entices Rahima into another mission on her behalf.
Rahima has come a long way from her first meeting with Catherine.
She has gone from a timid young woman chosen as the least likely to cause interference with the wicked queen to a trusted confidante.
What we cannot tell is how much of what Catherine shares with Rahima is true what she's saying merely to ensure that her objectives are met.
In this clip, Catherine and Rahima are strolling in the woods, far from Catherine's retinue.
Catherine is making a grave request of Rahima.

Historical figure Catherine de Medici gets the period-drama-with-a-twist treatment in Starz’s “The Serpent Queen,” as the show finds a unique way to tell the story of the Italian-born French queen, who influenced the politics of her adopted nation for decades.
Starring Samantha Morton as the grown-up queen, Catherine tells her story to a young woman employed in the kitchen at her court – Rahima (Sennia Nanua) – explaining to her (and the audience) how she’s survived, found agency and even thrived in a court initially unfriendly to a young Catherine (played by Liv Hill), and always dangerous. But while breaking the fourth wall, or at least turning and talking to camera, which often stands in for Rahima, may feel fresh for a television series, it is inspired by classic theater works.
“Direct address, it’s been around since the ancient Greeks and Shakespeare, but it makes something incredibly urgent,” executive producer Justin Haythe told TheWrap.

If you were to see the trailer or basically any promotional material for “The Serpent Queen,” Starz’s new series about the infamous life of one Catherine de Medici, you’d be forgiven for assuming it’s a showcase for Samantha Morton in a historical drama with modern touches, following in the footsteps of her recent turn in “Harlots.” Even its arresting opening credits sequence, which sees Morton stride to a throne to a heavy guitar lick as snakes slither out and toward her, suggests a show preoccupied with being Edgy and Different — a show that would consider itself to be not like Starz’s many other historical drama girls, as it were.
However: as adapted from Leonie Frieda’s biography by Justin Haythe, this perception proves to be only somewhat the case. In fact, the first few episodes of “The Serpent Queen” — which premieres Sunday, Sept. 11 — feature Morton sparingly,...

Catherine de Medici is one of the lesser known Queens despite how her family has impacted popular culture centuries later.
It's high time this misunderstood woman, the longest-reigning monarch in France's history, gets a rich and entertaining adaption of her life.
A historical drama with an edge, based in part on the book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda and brought to life by writer and showrunner Justin Haythe, The Serpent Queen puts a contemporary spin on conventional storytelling to tell the tale of Catherine de Medici's (Samantha Morton) rise to power.
Catherine's role in history may be as an evil queen, but in the series premiere, "Medici Bitch," Catherine’s tale unfolds through flashbacks as she defends her actions and imparts the lessons she’s learned to her new servant confident, Rahima (Sennia Nanua).

Family gatherings are always a rich vein to tap for drama. Populated by the shadows and echos of every interaction past and made exciting by the risk that one of the many things best left unsaid will come spilling from careless lips.
Unfolding across a single dawdling day, Frankie is just such a story. The family matriarch, Frankie (Isabelle Huppert) has brought her thoroughly modern family – of stepdaughter and son, husbands present and ex and one beloved friend – together in beautiful Sintra, Portugal because it pleases her to do so. Regardless of how much we’ve grown to love watching our favorite movies on streaming platforms, there’s no shame in adding a few new Blu-Rays to your collection, and with summer and spring pushing more people outside, the films below are great for a spooky movie night under the stars. Even though Halloween is usually sanctioned for zombie and other horror movies, you can obviously watch these movies all year long.

With the first of the big year-end holidays less than a week away, those anxieties about huge family gatherings start to kick in. You know, the old conflicts, the scandals, past injustices. We’d repeat that old phrase, “Save the drama for your mama”, but she’s right in the thick of it. Or in the case of this new film, she’s the orchestrator. Like the ensemble cast holiday flicks, she’s setting the stage for some pre-July Fourth fireworks. But in this one, it’s not a major holiday, and it’s far from the old family home and hearth. So, there’s that “travelogue” element to the tale. Literally this family and a couple of friends come from different ends of the Earth at the request (more than a whim) of the matriarch named Frankie.

Isabelle Huppert works her unique magic on Frankie, a film whose insistence on staying in a minor key robs it of the chance to achieve major dimension. Huppert and a stellar cast do their best for Memphis-born director Ira Sachs (Keep the Lights On, Little Men, Forty Shades of Blue) by offering tone-perfect performances to compliment his efforts to create an American version of a European art film.

"People seldom say 'no' to Frankie." Sony Classics has debuted the new full-length trailer for Frankie, the latest film from acclaimed American indie filmmaker Ira Sachs. This premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and they originally put out a teaser trailer just before that festival to build up some buzz. Frankie is set in the lovely town of Sintra, Portugal outside of Lisbon, where a number of palaces and castles are nestled on a hillside. The story follows three generations grappling with a life-changing experience during one day of a vacation. Starring Isabelle Huppert, along with Brendan Gleeson, Marisa Tomei, Greg Kinnear, Jérémie Renier, Vinette Robinson, with Carloto Cotta, Ariyon Bakare, and Sennia Nanua. I very much like the way this film looks and feels, so light and fresh yet it's so deeply moving and tough in its heart. This one is worth a watch. Here's the...

As a filmmaker, Ira Sachs, the director of “Love Is Strange,” “Little Men,” and (his masterpiece) “Keep the Lights On,” is like a flower that keeps sprouting new tendrils, growing ever more beautiful and complicated and delicate. His new movie, “Frankie,” may the closest that anyone has come to making an American version of an Eric Rohmer film. I say that having long compared Richard Linklater’s “Before Sunrise” and its sequels to Rohmer (and make no mistake: all three of the “Before” films are marvelous). But “Frankie,” even more exactingly, re-creates the deceptively casual and meandering but pinpoint Rohmeresque sensation of a small handful of characters wandering around, not doing much of anything but revealing, through conversation and (occasionally) through action, who they are and how, almost imperceptibly, over the course of one movie, they might change.

Sbs Distribution has debuted the first official trailer, more of a teaser trailer / sizzle reel, for the film Frankie, the latest from acclaimed American filmmaker Ira Sachs. This is premiering at the Cannes Film Festival playing In Competition later this month, and it looks incredibly promising. Easily one of my most anticipated films of the festival. Hynes’s debut as writer and director is an engaging story about a woman facing her daughter’s fears – and her own – in the ring
Everybody remembers being bullied at school, but nobody remembers being a bully. That maxim occurred to me during this stark, sober, flawed movie with which Jessica Hynes makes her worthwhile debut as writer-director. It feels like a very personal film, well acted by the A-list cast that Hynes has assembled: a cathartic meditation on the need to heal, the need to confront those who do wrong and to confront yourself when you’ve done wrong.
Hynes stars as Tina, a care-home nurse with an unhappy relationship with her elderly parents, strongly and sympathetically played by Anita Dobson and Christopher Fairbank; Shaun Parkes gives a warm and likable performance as Tina’s partner, Mick. Their sensitive daughter Emma (Sennia Nanua) is being bullied at school by...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the most overlooked and/or underrated movie of 2017?
E. Oliver Whitney, Screencrush.com, @cinemabite
Despite the critical praise, “A Fantastic Woman” only a one-week qualifying run last month, and I worry is it’ll easily be forgotten this awards season. Daniela Vega gives one of the most astounding performances I’ve seen this year, one that comes from somewhere fierce and internal, portraying the life and struggle of a trans woman that cinema has rarely shown an interest in exploring. But since you can’t see it until it has a proper release in Febraury, do check one of the year’s other...

Approaching the Apocalypse as an essential self deprecating act of survival in ‘The Girl With All The Gifts’ and ‘Planet of the Apes.’
Curiosity killed the cat. But what about Schrodinger’s feline? In Colm McCarthy’s The Girl With All The Gifts, the kitty facing extinction is a young girl stumbling into an inherited wasteland where she must answer the classical thought experiment forced upon her by scientists desperate to cling on to the last dregs of humanity. Like that cat in the box, the film also attempts to exist in two states of being. It is certainly a traditional zombie film ripe with brain chomping ghouls, but The Girl With All The Girts also reaches for the moral high ground of The Twilight Zone with a climax that proudly extends a middle finger to its audience. It joins the ranks of the original Planet of the Apes as a cinematic experience birthed from a pessimistic...

The Girl With All The Gifts is meatier than your average zombie tell-all. Much like how 28 Days Later brought a militant, survivalist perspective to infection-based terror, director Colm McCarthy does cinematic justice to Mike Carey’s novel of the same name. This isn’t an “Omg we’re trapped and have to survive” horror flick (not totally). Jump scares play second-fiddle to a child, her volatile situation and McCarthy’s building towards something bigger. Enjoy a genre watch that has more to offer than decapitations, gore and petty exploitation. This is undead drama with the heartbreak to sustain. Coming-of-age meets flesh-tearing monsters. Why the hell is this being buried in late February?
Young Sennia Nanua stars as Melanie, said girl with said “gifts.” Civilization has been crippled by a fungal disease that turns people into cannibalistic drones (aka zombies), but Melanie represents hope. She’s a hybrid child who harbors infection,...

The Girl With All The Gifts is anchored by one central image, one striking enough to show up on the poster and pop up every few scenes in the film itself: a beautiful little girl in a Hannibal Lecter mask. Devoid of context, the image is intriguing, promising something utterly original and deeply fucked up. Once you find out what’s going on—the girl is a “hungry,” this film’s term for zombies—it’s still interesting enough, if not quite as powerful. That’s basically what you’re in for with this British postapocalyptic survival horror tale, which starts off strong but dilutes its impact with every consecutive reveal.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Presidents' Day weekend was an interesting one at the box office, and as with most holiday weekends, it was particularly difficult to figure out how things might fare, other than The Lego Batman Movie, which remained at #1 with almost $45 million over the four-day weekend. Fifty Shades Darker followed with $21.3 million, about a 50% drop. Last week, I thought that the Ice Cub comedy Fist Fight would beat The Great Wall, although it seemed like it could be a close race. Nope. Matt Damon’s action epic came in third place with $21.6 million, which is a couple million more than my original prediction, but The Fist Fight fell short of my prediction by almost $10 million, grossing $14.5 million in its first four days.

Over the past few years, moviegoers have clocked eyes on girls with dragon tattoos and unassuming girls riding along on trains, but in 2017, director Colm McCarthy will introduce The Girl With All the Gifts,
Otherwise known as Melanie, in McCarthy’s post-apocalyptic thriller, Sennia Nanua’s gifted individual is at once our greatest threat and only hope. Forced to undergo a series of harrowing experiments at a military base in rural England, it’s here that Nanua’s youngster begins to display a handful of those special gifts, placing the likes of Miss Justineau and the gruff Sergeant Parks – Gemma Arterton and Paddy Considine, respectively – on red alert.
And though it may tout many of the tried-and-tested tropes of the zombie genre – the barren, bleak environments, the Messiah figure – The Girl With All the Gifts has been scoring positive reviews ahead of its bow later this month. M.R. Carey...

One of the highlights of last year's festival film viewing was watching The Girl with All the Gifts stunning a sold out audience. The post-screening reaction was one of incredulity and chief among the things everyone seemed to agree on, besides the fact that this is by far the best zombie anything in some time, was that the movie's young starlet Sennia Nanua is down-right amazing.

After Train to Busan helped re-ignite the zombie genre this summer, another promising flesh-eating flick will land next month. Director Colm McCarthy, who has helmed a batch of TV episodes, including Sherlock and Peaky Blinders, has made his feature debut with an adaptation of the best-selling novel by M.R. Carey, The Girl With All The Gifts. Ahead of a release in late February, the U.S. trailer has now arrived.
The story follows Melanie (newcomer Sennia Nanua), a young girl living a post-apocalyptic world who has a special bond to a woman (Gemma Arterton). Contained in an army base research facility with other children, Melanie is released when a revelation means she could be the ray of light the world needs.

An awesome trailer has been released for a new film called The Girl With All The Gifts. This is a zombie thriller that looks unlike any other zombie movie that I've seen before. On top of it being a unique take on the zombie genre, it's also been getting positive reviews from people who got to see it at Fantastic Fest last year.
The Colm McCarthy-directed film is based on the novel of the same name written by M.R. Carey. The story is set in a zombie apocalypse in which society has collapsed, and the humans who survived are looking for a cure to the zombie plague. One of the main characters is a young girl who has the zombie virus, but has also managed to basically stay human, save for the craving of human flesh.

Saban Films has debuted an official Us trailer for the zombie horror adaptation The Girl with All the Gifts, which already opened in the UK last year. The story is about a girl, named Melanie, who is being kept at a military base that is one of the only remaining safe havens in a zombie apocalypse. When the base it overtaken, she goes on the run with a few other people, attempting to survive in a hostile world. The movie stars Sennia Nanua as Melanie, along with Gemma Arterton, Glenn Close and Paddy Considine. I saw this film at a genre festival in Berlin last year and really enjoyed it, one of the most refreshingly original updates to the zombie genre I've seen in a while. I highly recommend it, for the performances alone. This Us trailer contains some spoilers and crops the footage, but the UK trailer is still available to watch.
