If you think about it, there’s no better place to premiere “Black Twitter: A People’s History” than at South by Southwest.
The three-part Hulu and Onyx docuseries based on Jason Parham’s similarly titled “Wired” story exists at the perfect intersection of entertainment, internet, and culture — just like SXSW itself.
“When I read the article, it was not only was only something that I love, that I participated in, but I saw the power of it,” director Prentice Penny told IndieWire during the conference. “It was sort of feeling like the way my mother talks about the Civil Rights Movement. That’s what I felt like was happening on Black Twitter.”
Along with being an active platform-formerly-known-as-Twitter user, Penny (whose profile welcomes users with the subhed “Fux Yo Blue Check”) was itching to do something different after “Insecure” — something that scared him.

First scheduled to appear at the festival back in 2020, Ocean was all set to mark his return to music after a lengthy hiatus. Delayed by the pandemic, as well as a family tragedy, he finally joined Puerto Rican reggaeton star Bad Bunny and K-pop princesses Blackpink at the top of the bill for 2023’s outing. Expectations were sky high.
From the die-hard supporters who journeyed to the California desert to the fans across the world tuning into the festival’s live-stream, a lot of people were ready and waiting for his Sunday night set. What a disappointment, then, when the reality fell far short of what was promised. With Ocean coming off as nonchalant and unprepared, and eager fans left frustrated,...

Finding a favorite new podcast to follow is process of trial and error. In some ways, it can feel a bit like internet dating. There’s that initial sense of excitement and possibility you get when you scroll through a site like Audible and spot a clever title, cover art or description that strikes your fancy. So you decide to give it a shot and sample a few episodes in the hopes of finding a show that speaks to you on a personal level. On rare occasions, the connection is an instantaneous case of “love at first listen.” But more often than not, the relationship proves to be a relatively short-lived encounter that leaves you wanting just a little bit more.
The good news is that with countless podcasts currently available, and an untold number of new ones being released daily, there are a ton of amazing shows out there...

Never mind the fact that Netflix original films traffic quite heavily in well-worn tropes — the streaming service has launched the first trailer for a new comedy special called “Attack of the Hollywood Clichés!” that finds celebrities discussing, dissecting, and having fun with familiar plot beats in your favorite movies. Hosted by Rob Lowe, the one-off special features a wide range of celebrities weighing in on everything from the Meet-Cute to the Ticking Time Bomb to the Jump Scare, using iconic films like “Forrest Gump” and “Out of the Past” as examples.
“Stock characters, familiar story beats, and convenient plot devices have crept in over time,” Lowe says in the trailer. “Tonight, we celebrate the clichés that have made cinema what it is today,” Lowe adds, as Netflix is pegging the special as something between a comedy special and a celebration of cinema history. While it’s still unclear when “The New Mutants” may finally — finally! — open in theaters, fans who have waited over two years for the movie’s release at least got an extended first look at the film during its Thursday panel at the virtual fan convention Comic-Con@Home.
The 30-minute panel — featuring stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga, and writer-director Josh Boone (“The Fault in Our Stars”) — opened with a cheeky teaser trailer that acknowledged the superhero horror film’s five release dates starting with April 13, 2018, with each date crossed out in favor of a new one. The teaser ended with the promise that “The New Mutants” will open “in theaters” on August 28, 2020 — followed with a speech bubble that read “Fingers Crossed.”

“Nothing will stop The New Mutants,” reads the tag line in the new trailer for the delays-dealt Marvel movie. It’s a defiant statement that seems to address the absurd awkwardness endured by the 2017-shot film in its seemingly interminable quest to reach a release. Yet, the trailer in question also signals a crucial promotional stop: a virtual panel set for the Covid-quarantined Comic-Con@Home festivities, which are to be held in place of Comic-Con 2020.

As of June 4th, a 2011 drama called The Help ranks as the most-watched film on Netflix. The popularity of the movie – doubtlessly connected to the ongoing nationwide protests following the death of George Floyd – doesn’t sit well with many activists though, as it presents a skewed perception of African American life that doesn’t match the reality in which we find ourselves today.
Like the 1989 dramedy Driving Ms. Daisy, The Help is a pic about African Americans who find satisfaction in their position of servitude to whites, rather than act on some revolutionary desire for freedom, autonomy and fraternity. Written and directed by a white filmmaker (Tate Taylor) and based on a book written by a white author, the story of The Help can neither be considered authentic nor educative.

Tate Taylor’s 2011 drama “The Help” is the No. 1 most-watched movie on Netflix (per the streamer’s June 4 chart), which isn’t sitting right with a handful of critics and journalists as the movie’s popularity in streaming coincides with the nationwide protests over the death of George Floyd. “The Help,” based on Kathryn Stockett’s 2009 novel of the same name, has been criticized for its white savior narrative and for sidelining the perspective of black characters like the maids Aibileen (Viola Davis) and Minny (Octavia Spencer). The film was a box office hit ($216 million worldwide), an Oscar nominee for Best Picture, and an Oscar winner for Spencer’s supporting performance.
That “The Help” is pulling in such streaming numbers to top Netflix’s charts amid the George Floyd protests has prompted notable writers such as Ashly Perez, Rebecca Theodore-Vachon, and Ira Madison III to speak out against the film’s surge in viewership.

As much of America continues to self-quarantine, the propensity to go stir crazy increases with each passing day. Celebrities are no different: bored out of their minds while sitting at home indefinitely. Maybe they are ceaselessly launching Instagram Lives just for some human connection. Maybe they’re teasing us with some quarantine writing session. Most likely, they’re sitting in their very large homes, marathoning movies until their eyes glaze over. Relatable!
Celebs Are Bored highlights the absurd, inane and mundane decisions made by famous people who have an unexpectedly large amount of free time.

Ellen DeGeneres had one of her most awkward interviews in recent memory Wednesday with Dakota Johnson, with a clip of the pair’s exchange about Johnson’s birthday party going viral online.
The interview began with what was perhaps supposed to be harmless chat: DeGeneres wished Johnson a happy belated birthday and asked her when specifically it was. Right away, Johnson’s demeanor seemed to stiffen.
“It was October 4,” she replied, with a tight smile.
“How was the party? I wasn’t invited,” DeGeneres said.

A sex scene will make or break a couple if executed a certain way. Because it is all about the chemistry between a couple, and if they have a sex scene, and they don't show any of that energy, then they don't stay on our minds for too long.

[Editors’ note: The following post contains spoilers for “Game of Thrones.”]
“The Last of the Starks,” the fourth episode of the final season of “Game of Thrones,” featured numerous moments that got fans talking, from Cersei ordering the beheading of Missandei to Brienne losing her virginity to Jamie. And yet, no moment has gone as viral in the hours after the episode’s airing as the odd sight of a to-go plastic coffee cup placed on a table in front of Daenerys Targaryen. Was it a hugely obvious production gaffe or some kind of product placement? The answer is unclear, but press and “Thrones” fans delivered an onslaught of Starbucks/”Thrones” jokes on social media in reaction to the moment.
The coffee cup appeared early in the episode during the scene in which a majority of the main characters are drinking and feasting inside Winterfell following the defeat of the Night King and the white walker army. Tormund...

Just a week after Beyonce was crowned Entertainer of the Year at the NAACP Image Awards, the Beyhive has another reason to celebrate.
Netflix posted a tweet Sunday teasing its rumored upcoming Beyonce concert documentary, which will reportedly highlight her 2018 performance at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival.
The tweet did not include any teaser footage, simply a yellow title card with the phrase “Homecoming” on it, using Greek-style lettering for the E and O’s. That coloring and the Greek theme mirrors one of the outfits the “Drunk In Love” singer wore during her Coachella performance, which gave a nod to historically black colleges and universities. The card also announced that the doc would drop April 17, the week of Coachella’s second weekend.
Beyonce was the first black woman to headline Coachella, and announced the Homecoming Scholars Awards Program to coincide with the event. The initiative provides scholarships to students attending HBCUs.

In case anyone has had any doubts (Lol) about Beyoncé's upcoming role in Disney's live-action remake of The Lion King, Billy Eichner is here to confirm that Queen B is doing an amazing job as Nala. So amazing, in fact, that just hearing her voice made him tear up.
The comedian, who stars opposite Seth Rogen in the film as Timon, recently appeared on an episode of the Keep It podcast where he spoke briefly about how the movie's development has come along so far. Addressing hosts Ira Madison III and Louis Virtel's concerns that Beyoncé isn't actually in it, he said, "She's definitely in the movie because I've seen a rough cut."
Eichner continued, "I've heard her sing 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight?' with Donald Glover and, I'm telling you, it's f*cking good. And that was never my favorite song to be totally...

The constant refrain in Hollywood is that we need diversity, particularly when it comes to writers. Unfortunately, this is almost always quickly followed by shrugs of frustration that no one knows where to find unique voices because there are only so many options in the WGA. And therein lies the problem: showrunners, agents and other influential figures often realize that they need to find fresh voices from outside Hollywood, but they aren’t sure where to find them.

Fans of seeing Matthew Broderick on a TV screen, today you’ve presumably been waiting for.
Word came Friday that the actor would have not one but three fresh new roles in the coming year, all on shows with distinct comedic flavors. Perhaps most notably is an upcoming recurring part on Pamela Adlon’s FX series “Better Things.” For those more inclined to broadcast comedies, he’ll be one of the actors filling the Roseanne void on the newly unveiled “The Conners,” where he’ll play alongside fellow Broadway vet Laurie Metcalf as Jackie’s new fling. His first episode, a Halloween-themed one, is slated to air at the end of this month.
Broderick will also be going back to school for the upcoming Netflix series “Daybreak.” The show (which you may have been hearing about from writer Ira Madison III’s Twitter feed) follows a group of teenagers navigating their way through Glendale,...

In an election year marked by unprecedented grassroots energy on the left, and with just one month to go until the midterms (Nov 6th), dozens of notable cultural figures have come together in a video series launching today with the goal to drive mass volunteer action that transforms our government this November.
Amid a slew of celebrity PSAs and reminders to vote, their message is different: “Don’t just vote this year — volunteer!”
Entitled The Last Call for The Last Weekend, the video series is the last big push for The Last Weekend, a coalition campaign organized by Swing Left and backed by more than 60 other progressive organizations including Indivisible, MoveOn, Organizing for Action, and Emily’s List to enlist people from across the country to volunteer a collective 1 million hours to help get out the vote when volunteering matters most: on the last weekend before the midterm elections (Saturday 11/3 – Tuesday 11/6).

Comedy writer/Twitter superstar Megan Amram, who has worked on such Emmy favorites as “Parks and Recreation,” “Silicon Valley” and “Childrens Hospital,” is now looking to chart her own Emmy path, come hell or high water. Amram, whose day job is as a producer and writer on NBC’s “The Good Place,” is the star/creator of the new web series “An Emmy for Megan,” a hilariously meta “for your consideration” series that is the only TV show in history made exclusively to win an Emmy.
This six-episode series, all of which you can stream for free at AnEmmyforMegan.com, is being submitted in the Short Form Comedy or Drama Series category, while Amram is looking for Emmy gold in Short Form Actress. Based on the material, her plan just might work.

The first social media reactions for “Black Panther” were incredibly positive, with some critics going as far as saying the film would “save blockbusters,” but the early word was nothing compared to the universal acclaim that met the film when the review embargo broke February 6. The movie has received some of the best reviews the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever seen, and it launched with a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes following 64 reviews.
IndieWire’s senior film critic David Ehrlich praised “Black Panther” as the single best Marvel movie so far, and he’s hardly the only one. The tentpole, directed by “Fruitvale Station” and “Creed” filmmaker Ryan Coogler, is being singled out for creating a Marvel film with real purpose and for shining a blockbuster light on black identity. The ensemble cast, which features Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Daniel Kaluuya, and more, is also be singled out for praise.

Justin Timberlake once brought sexy back. But in 2018, he couldn’t bring Janet Jackson back — and regardless of whether he tried (and we actually have no idea if he did), that should have been a requirement of any Jt-fronted Super Bowl halftime show.
After all, as evidenced on Sunday by the #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay, fans haven’t forgotten what happened in 2004, when Jackson’s infamous “wardrobe malfunction” had a chilling effect on the broadcast industry — and Jackson’s career.
And not acknowledging Jackson or what happened seems particularly tone-deaf in a year of #TimesUp. Sunday’s Super Bowl halftime show seemingly kicked off by taunting his critics, starting with his latest track, “Filthy,” which begins with the line, “Haters gonna say it’s fake.”

Ed Sheeran found the purr-fect way to celebrate his Grammy wins.
Even though the 26-year-old “Shape of You” singer skipped out on attending the 60th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, he honored the big night through social media — by sharing an adorable picture of his cat.
“Woke up to the news I won two grammys last night. Thank you ! This little fluff-ball is doing a bit of a celebratory dance, lots of love to everyone xx,” Sheeran wrote on social media, Sunday, alongside a picture of his white-and-orange kitty splayed out on the floor.
