Prime Video continues to expand its game show output, announcing two more new shows on Tuesday at Amazon’s upfronts presentation: “Buy It Now,” hosted by Jb Smoove (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and the holiday-themed event “Wish List Games” hosted by Nick Cannon (“The Masked Singer”). Both feature tie ins to Amazon’s shopping portals.
“Buy It Now” and “Wish List Games” comes on top of “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” (also announced on Tuesday) and the upcoming “Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?” hosted by Travis Kelce. Prime Video also has “Beast Games,” “The Goat” (from Elon Gale and Lee Eisenberg) and “The 1% Club.”

Amazon is stacking up its unscripted orders.
The streaming service has ordered two new nonscripted series; it has ordered a U.S. version of British format Buy It Now hosted by Curb Your Enthusiasm star Jb Smoove and Nick Cannon is hosting holiday event Wish List Games.
Elsewhere, it has added names to Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?, hosted by Travis Kelce.
This comes after the streamer ordered Pop Culture Jeopardy!, a spinoff of the iconic gameshow.
Amazon has largely struggled in the unscripted world and has had few breakouts so is evidently trying to bolster its slate.
Buy It Now comes from The Traitors producer Studio Lambert and is based on a Channel 4 daytime format that seasoned and budding entrepreneurs try to win a place in the Buy It Now store featured on both Amazon.com and within the Prime app.

Indian auteur Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Slb) was hosted by Netflix’s co-ceo Ted Sarandos in Los Angeles for a dinner. The intimate dinner was hosted to celebrate the release of Netflix’s highly-anticipated title ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’, which also marks the streaming debut of Bhansali.
The two were joined by ‘SNL’ star Bill Hader, Golden Globe-winning actress Ali Wong, filmmaker J. J. Abrams, Katie McGrath (Co-CEO of Bad Robot Productions) and Dan Lin, Chairman Netflix films.
For the occasion, Slb wore his signature black kurta which he paired with a white pyjama. Ted was dressed in black shirt which he paired with denims and a pair of suede leather shoes.

Doin’ It revolves around surely the most literal interpretation imaginable of the old saying “those who can, do; those who can’t, teach.” Lilly Singh stars as Maya, who stumbles almost by accident into a job teaching sex ed, despite still being a virgin. As she schools her kids on everything from consent to gender identity to orgasms, Maya sets out to unlearn the shame that she herself internalized at that age — and maybe even to get laid for the first time.
Good intentions practically drip off the premise, which makes a convincing case for dismantling the fear and ignorance around adolescent sex ed. And Doin’ It puts its money where its mouth is — its jokes eschew pearl-clutching or coyness in favor of in-your-face crassness. But the comedy never quite settles into a comfortable rhythm, and eventually backs itself into a corner so far away from any recognizable reality that...

Some film festivals take themselves entirely too seriously. Not South by Southwest, the Austin-based multidisciplinary mega-event where amped-up crowds welcome comedies with open arms — the raunchier the better. This year, one logline stood out as especially promising: “A 30-year-old Indian American virgin gets a job teaching high school Sex Ed.” Alas, “Doin’ It” doesn’t cut it (it’s basically 2014 Haley Joel Osment comedy “Sex Ed” with a cultural spin). The concept is funny, but the execution feels forced, in part because the substitute in question (played by Lilly Singh) is supposed to be following an abstinence-based curriculum. In theory, her deep-seated celibacy should make her perfect for the job.
The movie aims to combat the shame around all aspects of human sexuality, which seems like an admirable but inevitably controversial goal. But “Doin’ It” goes too far straight out of the gate, opening with an embarrassment no teenager can...

Sex is a lot like filmmaking. You dive in when you’re ready, trust your companions, and learn from experience. Few people start out as experts, but there’s beauty in being allowed to try and fail in different environments over the years.
In her first feature film lead, comedian and former late night host Lilly Singh plays Maya, a computer engineer who takes a part-time job teaching sex education. After an incident in her teens led to her mother moving them back to India, Maya not only repressed her sexuality but grew to actively fear it — and now she’s teaching teens about sex despite having never done it herself. Singh, Neel Patel, and director Sara Zandieh co-wrote the film, which premiered at SXSW on March 12.
Sonia Dhillon Tully plays Maya’s hyperconservative single mother Veena, a role that has unfortunately been tread and retread in the South Asian-American film ouevre.

The 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival — which runs March 8–16 in Austin, Texas — has cooked up an eclectic spread of studio crowd-pleasers, enterprising TV premieres, and indie gems aiming to break through. Here is some of the most promising fare.
Babes
The canon of Ilana Glazer-led indies about childbearing expands. Following 2021’s “False Positive,” Glazer plays pregnant once again in “Babes,” this time from a film script she wrote with Josh Rabinowitz in Pamela Adlon’s feature directorial debut. The Neon comedy follows Eden (Glazer), who gets pregnant from a one-night stand and seeks help from Dawn (Michelle Buteau), a married mother of two. In other words, “Babes” lets the “Broad City” star do what she does best: lean heavily on the support of a best buddy.

Dune: Part Two star Rebecca Ferguson recently revealed that she was screamed at on the set of a film early in her career by a huge star. The actress mentioned that she later told the star to “F off” after the altercation and refused to work with them, which drew flack from the producers as the other actor was ‘Call Sheet No.1’.
While Ferguson did not reveal who the screamer was, the Internet has gone with speculations. The actress assured that it was neither Tom Cruise nor Hugh Jackman while Dwayne Johnson, her Hercules co-star seemingly cleared his name. A recent clip with Star Wars star Ewan McGregor showed Ferguson being extremely comfortable with the actor, clearing his name too.

As beloved as The Muppets are, they can’t seem to catch a break on Disney+. It was reported today that The Muppets Mayhem has been canceled by the streaming service after one season.
Developed and written by The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg, Bill Barretta, and Jeff Yorkes, The Muppets Mayhem follows “The Electric Mayhem Band — Dr. Teeth on vocals and keyboards, Animal on drums, Floyd Pepper on vocals and bass, Janice on vocals and lead guitar, Zoot on saxophone and Lips on trumpet — on an epic, music-filled journey to record their first-ever studio album. With the help of a driven young music executive, Nora Singh (Lilly Singh), the old-school Muppet band comes face-to-face with the current-day music scene as they try to finally record their first studio album.“
Disney+ never revealed the ratings for The Muppets Mayhem, but it’s clear they weren’t quite what the studio had hoped.

The Electric Mayhem Band is breaking up after Disney+ canceled its latest Muppets show.
The streamer has axed live-action series The Muppets Mayhem, which comes from The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg, after one season.
The ten-part series was released in May but Disney+ never disclosed any ratings for the show.
The cancellation marks a blow for plans for a wider Muppetverse; Goldberg previously expressed interest in branching out using the classic IP, which includes some of Disney’s most recognizable characters.
It is the latest cancelation at Disney+ this year; other shows to have been axed include The Spiderwick Chronicles, which has since been shopped to Roku, National Treasure, Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., Willow, Big Shot and Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.
Developed and written by Goldberg and Muppets veteran Bill Barretta and Jeff Yorkes, the series followed The Electric Mayhem Band as they went on an epic musical journey...

Faced with the possibility of potentially not committing mass crimes, this crew of baddies has to do the unthinkable and save Christmas by becoming stand-in Santas.
“Let’s go do some good so we can be bad,” Wolf (Michael Godere) says in the trailer.

Philanthropic organization Social Impact Fund celebrated its 10-year anniversary in Los Angeles on Tuesday night and, in typical charitable fashion, used the occasion to gift a $50,000 donation to the Entertainment Community Fund. Annette Bening, the new chair of the Ecf, was on hand to accept the grant and get frank about the need for financial assistance as both the writers and actors strikes rage on.
Noting that the Ecf (formerly known as the Actors Fund) has given out $4.8 million in grants for immediate needs to people in the industry since the WGA strike began in May, Bening told the crowd, “The situation is really serious out there for those of us in show business. There are a lot of people who are in dire financial conditions, so this fund that we have, this is one of the things that we do; it’s emergency cash and the average distribution is...

In the world of celebrity giving, the road to scandal is often paved with the best intentions. Consider the case of Brad Pitt’s Make It Right Foundation, which built homes for Hurricane Katrina survivors, only to face a class-action lawsuit over major structural defects. Or Sean Penn’s Core, a disaster-relief nonprofit that has been lauded for its work around the world and has a positive rating on Charity Navigator, but which faced accusations of labor violations (one case was dismissed by a judge earlier this year while a class-action suit was settled this week) and allegations of financial mismanagement (which the organization denies). There is little reason to doubt the genuine goodwill of such stars, but just as fame can draw attention to a worthy cause, it can amplify the reputational hit when things go wrong and undermine the aims of their nonprofits.
