After an anxious wait during Saturday's draw ceremony at the Brisbane International, Rafael Nadal will now have to wait a little longer to know his first-round opponent.
The weekend's draw was inconclusive after Nadal, who is in the tournament as a wild card entrant, was drawn to face a qualifier or lucky loser in his first singles match since he hobbled out of the 2023 Australian Open with a damaged hip.
The second and final round of qualifying will be completed on Sunday, December 31st, and a couple of main draw matches will occur on the same day. Then, the qualifiers will placed into the main draw, one of whom will take on the 22-time Grand Slam champion.
The qualifying field is very competitive and features a former Grand Slam champion, Dominic Thiem. Nadal will be paying close attention to Sunday to know the identity of his first-round opponent. A meeting...

Benoit Paire competed at the 2023 Ultimate Tennis Showdown (Uts) Grand Final in London, and he really enjoyed himself at the event.
The Frenchman is a real showman, and with so many players ranked high on the Atp Tour taking part at the 2023 Uts Grand Final, it wasn't really probable that he would make it out of the round robin stage.
Paire was in the group with Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud, and Diego Schwartzman. First, Rublev booked his semifinal spot on Friday, before Ruud bested Schwartzman on Saturday to advance.
The Frenchman, on the other hand, struggled against all of the players, but he came very close to winning his first match at the event, when he lost to Schwartzman only in the "Sudden Death", losing 17-11, 13-14, 10-21, 17-16, 4-5.
After that match, Paire lost to Ruud 12-17, 9-18, and 10-16, and later in his match against Rublev, it was...

Casper Ruud will be playing in the semifinals of the 2023 Ultimate Tennis Showdown Grand Final in London after beating Diego Schwartzman.
Andrey "Rublo" Rublev was the first player to secure his spot in the Final Four of the Uts Grand Final, and on Saturday, Jack "The Power" Draper followed him into the semifinals.
After the Brit bested Gael "La Monf" Monfils, who was forced to retire mid-third quarter, Casper "The Ice Man" Ruud and Diego "El Peque" Schwartzman fought for the last semifinal spot left in Group A.
The Norwegian had a better start into the match, as he didn't allow his opponent to do much in the first quarter, winning it convincingly 16-10, establishing dominance early in the match.
However, the Argentinian was even more convincing in the second quarter of the match. Schwartzman was better than the former world no. 2 on the Atp Tour, beating him 16-7 and...

Diego Schwartzman has disclosed the private dialogue he had with football icon Lionel Messi after his four-set loss to Rafael Nadal at the 2018 Roland Garros .
Back then, Schwartzman had established himself as a Top 20 mainstay ( before his current decline ) and was a pesky grinder for the Atp 's top-ranked players. Schwartzman had rocked Nadal out of his comfort in their quarterfinal match at Roland Garros in 2018 and was seemingly on course to complete one of the biggest upsets in tennis.
The diminutive Argentine had completed half the task, taking a set and a break lead. Schwartzman had become the first player to puncture Nadal's streak of 37 successive unblemished sets when he won the opener 6-4. The Spaniard, however, averted danger and recovered from a 2-3 deficit in the second set following a rain break to level at 6-3.

The 2023 Swiss Indoors will run from October 23 to 29, assembling 32 players in a highly competitive field for the last stop of the Atp 500 events this season.
The draw for this year's tournament has been released and there are a plethora of exciting matches that could have a substantial change in the rankings and the Atp Race. In addition to vying for a huge share of €2,196,000 of prize money , 500 ranking points will be up for grabs.
Holger Rune is the top seed at the event. He has earned a rematch against Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round of the Swiss Indoors. The Serbian ended Rune's title defense in Stockholm this week , and a repeat of the same result in Basel will be a massive setback in the Dane's quest to qualify for the Atp Finals.
Another Atp Finals aspirant is Taylor Frtiz who is in Rune's half of the draw.

Grigor Dimitrov is having the best season since 2017, and he's proving it also at the 2023 Shanghai Masters , as he bested Chile's Nicolas Jarry .
The Bulgarian seemingly peaked back in 2017, when he managed to win the Atp Finals, and despite always hovering around the Top 20 since then, Dimitrov never managed to win another title.
It may seem incredible and unbelievable, but it's true, and the six-year streak may end now, at the 2023 Shanghai Masters, a tournament, where Dimitrov managed to stun Carlos Alcaraz .
After beating the young Spaniard, and previously ousting Karen Khachanov and Aleksandar Vukic, the Bulgarian took on Nicolas Jarry, who was also having a great week after beating the likes of Lorenzo Sonego and Diego Schwartzman.
But it's difficult to face someone in such for that the Bulgarian has right now. After winning 49 matches in 2017, Dimitrov never managed to get the number in the wins column past 26, yet,...

Alexander Zverev won his second-round match at the 2023 China Open in Beijing, beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina .
The German is one of the players who complained about late-night finishes this year, and he won't be happy about what happened at the Atp 500 tournament in Beijing. After a very long day, which started with a long match between Nicolas Jarry and Matteo Arnaldi, and was followed by Daniil Medvedev's win over Alex de Minaur , the German eventually got to play his match that started at midnight.
Zverev has been playing great tennis recently , and he wanted to follow up on that in Beijing. He started well in the first round against Diego Schwartzman , and to follow up on that in the second round, he had to overcome more than just his opponent.
The first set of the match saw multiple breaks from both players, but every time, it was the Spaniard who broke first.

A few days after winning a trophy in Chengdu, Alexader Zverev continued his good run at the 2023 China Open by beating Diego Schwartzman .
It was a win but a tough one for Zverev, who played Diego Schwartzman and nearly lost. Schwartzman has been far from his best for much of this year, managing only 12 wins in 27 matches, which is far from his best.
He did play a solid match here, though, against Zverev, who was expectedly a bit slow to start. He just won in Chengdu , and generally, players do have struggles the week after a trophy.
It was a close match, but much of that had to do with Zverev kind of taking a very long time to play himself into a good rhythm. Schwartzman was up an early break in the opening set but allowed Zverev to battle back and force a tiebreak.
Still, the Argentine won it...

Alexander Zverev had some troubles with Diego Schwartzman , but will he have it again when they meet at the 2023 China Open in Beijing?
Diego Schwartzman hasn't had a very good year so far. The Argentine has been a fair player for a long time, but this year's performances have been anything but good. He won only 12 of the 27 matches he played, and that's by far the worst mark in his career.
It's the lowest win total he's had since 2008, which just shows how poorly he's played. Things didn't look that good last week in Zhuhai as he retired in his first-round matchup a few games away from defeat. We don't know what's going on, but he's not been playing well.
Zverev, on the other hand, is enjoying time in China as he lifted a trophy last week in Chengdu and hopes to keep that momentum going this week. He got...

Diego Schwartzman 's slump hit a new low after the 30-year-old lost in the second round of qualifying at the Cincinnati Masters on Sunday.

Tennis is a sport you play mostly play standing up, but it's possible to play shots from various twister positions, and Aleksandar Vukic did that, saving a break point in the process.
Aleksandar Vukic from Australia has been having a superb week at the Canadian Open making his way to the 3rd round of the event. He didn't get there by chance but rather outplayed some big names such as Borna Coric and Sebastian Korda. He also defeated Diego Schwartzman in the qualifiers.
However, the run is over now. He faced Gael Monfils for a spot in the quarter-finals, and the French veteran defeated him in straight sets adding to his own superb week in the Canadian city. The crucial game of the first set was at 3-3 in the opening set when Monfils broke his opponent's serve.

Grigor Dimitrov lowkey put together a really impressive season so far, however, it won't extend in Canada as he withdrew from the Canadian Open in Toronto.
It was a rather sudden withdrawal from Dimitrov, who was in action just last week in Washington. The Bulgarian played a really solid week of tennis in the US capital, making his way to the semi-final, where he was beaten by Dan Evans.
Evans won the event in the end so it's not a terrible loss but it seems like he paid the price for his good play - an injury. According to reports, Dimitrov pulled out of the Canadian Open due to a back injury that has plagued him in the past.
There are only a few explanations here. Either it bothered him already in Washington, and it got worse so he's protecting his US Open or it's a completely new injury which would be even worse.

Washington, Aug 1 (Ians) Frenchman Gael Monfils collected just his second tour-level win of the season and the first since the French Open when he defeated American Bjorn Fratangelo in the first round of the DC Open.
The former World No.6 won 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets against Fratangelo in Washington, D.C. on Monday night.
Staying way behind the baseline, the 36-year-old Monfils used his speed and athleticism to build a defensive wall that the 30-year-old Pittsburgh native was unable to penetrate on his 2023 main-draw tour-level debut.
En route to his 527th match win, Monfils also delighted fans with two signature slam-dunk smashes, according to a report on the Atp website.
Monfils, who at No.323 in the Atp Rankings needed a wild card into the main draw, withdrew from the second round of his home Grand Slam with a left wrist injury and played his first match since Roland Garros last week in Atlanta.

In the semifinals of the event, Wu, who was one of the three Chinese players that made history at the Roland Garros , played against Ben Shelton. Andy Murray lost in the opening round of the 2023 Cinch Championships to the seventh-seeded Alex de Minaur .
No player has even won more titles at the Queen's Club than the experienced Brit. He triumphed at the event five times in singles and also added one win in doubles. Coming into the Atp 500 tournament in 2023, Murray wanted to taste success again.
And it wouldn't be a surprise if he did. The 36-year-old was coming to the Queen's Club on a ten-match winning streak . Moreover, he entered the Top 40 for the first time in 5 years , and the fans were high on hope.
But the draw for the 2023 Cinch Championships wasn't really nice to Murray. Already in the first round, he played against the seventh-seeded Alex de Minaur who he never managed to beat on the Atp Tour before.
Yet, winning 20 of the last 21 sets he played spoke in Murray's favour, but the tiredness didn't.

Stefanos Tsitsipas pulled off a mind-boggling shot at Roland Garros while defeating Diego Schwartzman.
An extraordinary spectacle unfolded at the 2023 Roland Garros, when the talented Greek pulled out one of the rarest shots in the world of tennis. The ever-creative Tsitsipas showcased a dazzling demonstration of precision and creativity during his third-round encounter against Diego Schwartzman.
The moment of magic? An unthinkable around-the-net backhand winner that left spectators, commentators, and Tsitsipas himself, absolutely spellbound. It was just one of the shots that led the Greek to a comfortable 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 win, but surely the most remembered one.
From the deep trenches of the court, Tsitsipas visualized and materialized a stroke that defied the very geometry of the game. With the ball well off-court and the net standing tall, one could only anticipate a defensive lob.
But Tsitsipas, who now spent 200 weeks in the Top 10 on the Atp Tour, had other ideas.

Alexander Zverev will be playing in the fourth round of the 2023 Madrid Open and his third-round performance was worth the spot.

Wimbledon organisers have sought to re-assure spectators over potential interruptions from climate change activists ahead of the 2023 competition.
Recent tennis events have already seen incidents of protests in the last year, with a man bursting onto the court and setting his arm on fire during a 2022 Laver Cup match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Diego Schwartzman in September. In addition, a French Open tie between Marin Cilic and Casper Ruud was suspended for 15 minutes when a protestor tied herself to the net.
Throughout 2023, sports events in the UK have also been delayed by climate change activists as the Grand National and the snooker World Championships have been affected by campaigners. The Atp draw was released for the 2023 Madrid Open which will run from April 26th to May 7th, 2023 at La Caja Magica.
Last year, Carlos Alcaraz lifted the trophy in Madrid after he defeated Alexander Zverev in the final. This year, both of the players are back to the Atp 1000 tournament in Madrid and the young Spaniard is ready to defend his title after his recent triumph in Barcelona, which preceded also last year's win.
But this year's event has been plagued by many withdrawals. It started when Rafael Nadal announced that he won't be playing, and soon after him, fellow 22-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic also pulled out of the event. With two of the greatest players ever, the draw opens up for other players.
The top 32 seeds at the tournament received a bye in the first round in a new 96-player format, and so they will start already in the second round.

Daniil Medvedev insists he is ready to have a locker room showdown with rival Alexander Zverev over claims he doesn't take 'fair play and sportsmanship very serious'.
In an astonishing press conference following a straight sets defeat to Holger Rune at the Monte-Carlo Masters, the Russian told journalists he was prepared to have it out with Zverev if the German continued to say he was "one of the most unfair" players on the Atp Tour. The dispute comes after Medvedev won over Zverev on Thursday in an eventful last-16 match.
Coming from a set down, Medvedev appeared to irk his opponent when he made a dash for the toilet with the score at 4-3 in the deciding set. But the World No.5 rejected Zverev's claims it was a tactical move to put the German off his game, citing the fact that Zverev went on to have two match points before he claimed the win.

But the World No.5 rejected Zverev's claims it was a tactical move to put the German off his game, citing the fact that Zverev went on to have two match points before he claimed the win.

Monte-Carlo, April 12 (Ians) Fourth-seeded Casper Ruud advanced here on Wednesday with a 7-5, 7-6(1) win over Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters, the first clay-court Masters’ event of the season.
The Norwegian had to save one set point when trailing 5-4 in the second set and failed to serve for the match at 6-5, while being dominant in the tiebreak to wrap up his victory in two hours and 15 minutes, reports Xinhua.
“It is never easy to start at a new tournament and against a player I have lost to before,” said Ruud, who had lost three of four previous head-to-head meetings with the world No. 31, as the most recent one came at the Miami Masters last month.
“I was a bit sloppy and didn’t take my chances. Sometimes it is a little tricky playing someone you recently lost to, like ‘Not again’, but in this case,...

The 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters will be held from April 9th to 16th and the draw for this Atp 1000 event was released.
Last year, Stefanos Tsitsipas triumphed at the picturesque Monte-Carlo Country Club and the Greek player will want to defend his title this year. The tournament was plagued by withdrawals as Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, and Felix Auger-Aliassime all withdrew, including many other players.
On the other hand, it created a space for some players that were initially not set to compete. Andy Murray will make his first appearance in six years, and Dominic Thiem was awarded a wild card so he'll also play in Monte Carlo.
But the biggest favourite will be Novak Djokovic. The Serb won the Monte-Carlo Masters only twice in his career, but thanks to withdrawals and his incredible form in 2023, he will have a chance to add his third this year. Like all the top eight seeded players,...

The 2023 Estoril Open is held from April 3rd to 9th and the draw hints that it will be another spectacular event.
If the Atp tournaments were rated based on their location, the 2023 Estoril Open would surely be a Grand Slam. However, that's not the case but the Atp 250 event, played at the Clube de Ténis do Estoril, surely doesn't mind as it still attracts a very solid field of players every year.
In 2022, young Argentinian Sebastian Baez defeated Frances Tiafoe in the final to become the seventh different champion of this young event, which was founded in 2015. This year, he returns to defend his title but the competition is very fierce as all players in the draw will be fighting for their share of the prize money and points.
Casper Ruud is the first-seeded player in the tournament. The Norwegian can face a difficult second-round match as he may face the home wild card,...

Miami (USA), March 28 (Ians) Taylor Fritz advanced to the quarterfinals of the Miami Open for the first time on Tuesday, overcoming Holger Rune 6-3, 6-4 in the first Top 10 clash at this year’s event, here.
The American, who had never been beyond the fourth round in six previous appearances in South Florida, was dialled in from ball one inside Hard Rock Stadium. He combined fierce power with consistency to outlast World No. 8 Rune in their first Atp head-to-head meeting.
Fritz drove the ball down the middle of the court to cut off angles for the Dane and stepped forward at crucial times, striking 19 winners throughout the 85-minute clash.
He has now earned three straight sets victories this fortnight, having also defeated Emilio Nava and Denis Shapovalov.
“I couldn’t play aggressively in my first two matches because my opponents were hitting every ball as hard as they could. [Rune] still...

American Taylor Fritz delivered a no-nonsense performance against Canada's Denis Shapovalov, securing a spot in the fourth round of the 2023 Miami Open.
The ninth-seeded Fritz showcased his remarkable composure and skill in a straightforward 6-4, 6-4 win over the 24th-seeded Shapovalov, who has seen a decline in form and rankings in recent times.
Shapovalov, once a rising star with a promising future, has experienced a rocky journey over the past few years. Despite remaining within the Top 20 from 2019 to 2022, the Canadian prodigy has struggled to make a significant impact on the biggest stages. His subpar performance in Miami only adds to his mounting woes as he'll likely face a further drop in the rankings.
Meanwhile, Fritz arrived at the Miami Open hungry for redemption after a disappointing quarterfinal loss to Jannik Sinner at Indian Wells. Determined to make a statement, he began his campaign with a decisive victory against...

Rising tennis star Holger Rune has made an impressive statement at the 2023 Miami Open, powering past Diego Schwartzman in a thrilling third-round encounter.
After a disappointing third-round exit at Indian Wells against Stan Wawrinka, with who he shared another exchange of words at the net, Rune was eager to prove his mettle in Miami, and he did so with a dominating performance.
The 2023 season had been unkind to Schwartzman, who entered the match with a paltry 3-7 win-loss record. However, Rune showed no mercy as he confidently outplayed the struggling Argentine, leaving no doubt about who the superior player was on this day.
From the outset, it was clear that Rune was in control. The young Dane fired off 23 winners throughout the match, while limiting his unforced errors to a mere 15. Schwartzman, on the other hand, found it difficult to hit through Rune's solid defense and consistent baseline play.

Thanasi Kokkinakis has great form in 2023 but unfortunately for him, he always meets the best of the best.
It happened to him at Australian Open when he lost to former world no. 1 and in Indian Wells, the Australian was outplayed by the top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz. After an early exit from the first event of the Sunshine Double, Kokkinakis opted to compete in the so-called second-chance event.
That's the Arizona Tennis Classic, which is an Atp Challenger 175 played in Phoenix, Arizona, United States, and this year, it's attended by many players that lost early in Indian Wells such as Matteo Berrettini, Gael Monfils, and Diego Schwartzman, therefore the 'second chance' label.
Since the draw is full of star names, the Australian couldn't expect an easy first-round match. He took on world no. 47 Jiri Lehecka, who defeated Andrey Rublev in Doha last month. The young Czech player was the sixth-seed in Phoenix,...

The 2023 Arizona Tennis Classic is an Atp Challenger event and it's held in Phoenix, Arizona, United States from March 13th to 19th. In the past, the event enjoyed it's share of attention as Matteo Berrettini won the inaugural tournament in 2019 and last year, the likes of Lorenzo Musetti, David Goffin, and Benoit Paire competed in Phoenix.
The tournament has a special place in the Atp calendar, as it offers a 'second chance' to the players who didn't do well in Indian Wells and experienced an early exit. By playing the Challenger event, they can earn some valuable ranking points and prepare for the upcoming 2023 Miami Open.

Casper Ruud has explained the difficulties of facing Rafael Nadal on clay and Novak Djokovic on hard courts ahead of the Indian Wells tournament.
Ruud has faced Nadal and Djokovic a combined six times in his career and failed to win any match against the pair. The Norwegian also faced Nadal in the 2022 French Open final and lost the match in straight sets.
Speaking ahead of his second-round clash against Argentinian Diego Schwartzman at Indian Wells, Ruud reflected on his final clash with Nadal last year and felt he was second-best against the 22-time Grand Slam champion.
"Rafa on clay has been the one that really, I felt clueless what to do and chanceless as well, It was really a one-way show, we played at Roland-Garros last year, and particularly best-of-five sets is really difficult."
