Considering the sheer number of family dramas coming from Japan, most of which seem to be of the 7/10 variety, it is quite hard to find ones that stand out, even in detail. Kazuhiro Nakamura, however, who was inspired by the city of his birth and the “Amagasaki lock gate,” which protects from flood damage, seems to have managed to come up with a film in the category that does stand out, even if he does not avoid all its ‘tropes'.
Amalock is screening at Osaka Asian Film Festival
The film starts in 1994 when a young and quite loud Yuko is living with her parents in Amagasaki, somewhat idolizing her father, Ryutaro, owner of a small metalworks factory, which she considers Amalock, a kind of protector of everything and everyone around him. Years later, 39-year-old Yuko is a high-achieving and proud woman whose career ambitions have taken to Tokyo, where she has a high-caliber work.

Welcome to this review of this past Monday’s episode of WWE Raw, right here on Nerdly. Let’s see what went down on this week’s show!
Match #1: Tommaso Ciampa def. Finn Bálor The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
After Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano took out an interfering Damian Priest, Johnny Wrestling grabbed Bálor’s feet as he was suplexing his opponent back into the ring. This helped Ciampa fall onto the Judgment Day Superstar and pick up the three-count. As a result, #DIY moved one step closer to an Undisputed WWE Tag Team Title opportunity.
My Score: 3 out of 5 Match #2: Kofi Kingston vs. Ludwig Kaiser (Double Count-Out) The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
One week after Giovanni Vinci’s injury, a match between Ludwig Kaiser and Kofi Kingston ended in a double count-out. Although Kingston initiated a post-match brawl, Kaiser struck with a thumb to the eye.

Hans Niemann, the American 20-year-old chess grandmaster at the center of a scandal involving Magnus Carlsen, the game’s reigning superstar and former world champion, will not have the chance to seek damages over allegations of cheating that have hurt his professional standing. On Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge Audrey Fleissig threw out his $100 million defamation lawsuit against Carlsen, the gaming platform Chess.com and another grandmaster, Hikaru Nakamura.
Niemann did not immediately return a request for comment or indicate whether he would continue to explore his legal options in the matter,...

Yoshinobu Nakamura started out in the movie business by focusing on his love for photography, a career highlight being the shooting of promotional material for the likes of Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Grant and a myriad of other actors. Not content with still images, the talented newcomer took to the director's seat and began making films independently with his debut effort “Mono yuuni” (2021) screening at local festivals across his native Japan.
Old Photograph is screening at Japan FilmFest Hamburg
The horror genre symbolizes what Nakamura considers scary but also has ‘deep meaning rooted in the culture of the country' [it was made in]. It is no coincidence then that all his work since “Mono Yuuni” has been travelogue-type ‘travel memories' and a series of eerie short films sharing similar ryokan-themed creepiness. Starting with “Ofuda” (2021), “Twitter” (2022) and following up with this one that takes the action right back into the same infamously claustrophobic four walls.

Match #1: Shinsuke Nakamura def. The Miz The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Competing in his first Raw match since being drafted by the red brand, Shinsuke Nakamura tangled with The Miz. After settling into the match, The Miz took control, blasting Nakamura with a kick on the outside of the ring. After Nakamura tried to lock up the match with the Kinshasa, The Miz slyly evaded the maneuver, poking Nakamura in the eyes while the referee’s back was turned. The A-Lister landed the Skull-Crushing Finale on The King of Strong Style, but Nakamura wisely put his foot on the ropes. Nakamura then followed up with the Kinshasa for the victory.

The history of every city is reflected in the rich and diverse narrative told in each of its parts. What makes it so interesting and eventually engaging to explore one of the world's capitals or a metropolis on your own is to find these, and explore them on your own. Some of these places we know through pop-culture, but at the same time, the majority of them stay hidden, although their influence on local culture remains. One of the places is the Atomic Cafe in Los Angeles, which, even though it was closed in 1989, still holds a very special spot in people's hearts, especially those who were part of the L.A.'s underground scene. In their short documentary “Atomic Cafe: The Noisiest Corner in J-Town” directors Akira Boch and Tadashi Nakamura tell the story of the Atomic Cafe, its owner and its influence on the city's culture.

Many filmmakers who've experienced success with a short film are tempted to pad the initial project out into a feature. However, in the case of Japanese director Mayu Nakamura, she's taken the key themes and filmmaking principles of her successful short “Among Four of Us” (2021) and produced the touching anthology, “She is Me, I am her”. In just a brisk 70 minutes, the film explores loneliness, life in post-pandemic Japan, and the importance of human connection. Minor spoilers follow.
She is Me, I am Her is screening at Asian Pop-Up Cinema Sophia's Choice
The film is made up of four short films; the first, “Among Four of Us”, follows a phone call between three former college friends reuniting, while the second, “Someone to Watch Over Me”, concerns the relationship that develops between a delivery driver and a regular customer. With the third short, “Ms. Ghost”, we see two street workers of...

Welcome to this review of this past Friday’s episode of Friday Night Smackdown, right here on Nerdly. This week’s episode reportedly had some issues behind the scenes that meant, allegedly, the show was put together on the fly. Let’s see how that pans out…

After attacking Jinder Mahal and The Skyscraping Shanky a few weeks ago upon their SmackDown return, The Viking Raiders were looking for more carnage. Mahal and Shanky couldn’t get out the gates, with The Viking Raiders pummeling the duo until a massive Assisted Powerbomb on Mahal gave The New and Vicious Viking Raiders the win.
