It’s always a little harder to start a work week after a holiday weekend. But one of the best things about the rise of on-demand streaming is that TV seasonality is essentially a thing of the past. There’s almost always something new to watch on streaming services, be it a new reality series or a blockbuster movie that just left theaters.

Elisabeth Moss is definitely dressed for sartorial success as MI6 agent Imogen Salter in Stephen Knight’s spy thriller “The Veil” (currently streaming on FX). The chameleon-like spy, who travels from Istanbul to Paris to London with suspected Isis terrorist Adilah El Idrissi (Yumna Marwan), sports an array of designer clothes suitable for every inconspicuous or dangerous situation. This provided costume designer Anthony Unwin (“Shoshana”) the perfect opportunity to be stylishly creative.
“The Veil” establishes a strong silhouette for the introduction of Imogene as she springs a trap on an unsuspecting enemy spy at the airport. “It was very much about creating this image in the silhouette that was quite powerful,” Unwin told IndieWire. “I used Alexander McQueen shoulders with the jacket and Jimmy Choo patent leather shoes. And then a silk Joseph blouse underneath that and pencil skirt. I was kind of creating the character from that with [mostly] British brands.

The Veil Ep1 S3 Ending Explained: Is Imogen Working for the American? ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
HBO’s latest mini-series, The Veil, is a tight thriller with themes of espionage and international crime and operations. With Elizabeth Moss as the protagonist Imogen who is hell bent on proving that Adilah El Idrissi (Yumna Marwan) is actually Djinn al Raqqa of Isis, who is planning a huge attack on the US, the series has already shown how the former has rescued Adilah from the camp she was held captive in. The two then took a detour and eventually, Imogen decided to take Adilah to Paris to reunite her with her daughter. After the DNA test conducted by the American intelligence, Imogen’s superiors are convinced that Adilah is not the fierce Isis leader they are looking for. However, Imogen does not believe it, and this week’s episode proves that she’s not wrong.

It's 2024 and one of the best British television personalities, Steven Knight, is in business like never before! Yes, admittedly, his projects these days are not as critically acclaimed as Peaky Blinders, but they always boast a high level of production and, of course, an excellent cast, which has never been wrong with Knight's TV series.
Last year's All the Light We Cannot See delighted us with the talent of young actors like Louis Hofmann and Aria Mia Loberti, as well as Hollywood colossi Hugh Laurie and Mark Ruffalo, while this March the BBC released This Town, led by the excellent British cast of Levi Brown, Jordan Bolger, Ben Rose and Eve Austin.

Hulu’s The Veil is a spy drama full of intense action and international intrigue. As such, it filmed all over the world, with location shoots taking place in Paris, London and other far-flung locales.
Which is how Yumna Marwan (Sky’s Little Birds), who stars opposite Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) in the limited series and who was a new mom at the time of filming, found herself using a breast pump on a frigid day of shooting in a snowy region of Turkey.

"The Queen of Peak TV" strikes again.
Suffice it to say, beginning with The Veil Season 1 Episode 1, this series premiere was a tour de force in acting, writing, and dialogue.
Elisabeth Moss's streak of delivering must-see TV is at an all-time high with this thriller series. There is almost no doing justice to how incredibly crafted this story is.
Even with the bar set to stratospheric, The Veil exceeded expectations by introducing audiences to the presence that is Imogen Salter.
Tomas: Everything will be completed once we get to Berlin and you have been invaluable.
Imogen: Thank you, Tomas. I don't think you'll feel the same in a moment when Interpol arrives, though.
Tomas: What are you talking about? Who are you?
Imogen: I'm the person who has recorded and memorized every move you've made and every word you've said for the last 37 days.

It’s rare to find a star whose taste you can trust beyond their performance; the kind of actor who’s proven to be as discerning in their projects’ quality as they are in choosing rewarding individual roles. There simply aren’t that many Julia Louis-Dreyfuses or Carrie Coons out there, with either impeccable résumés or a Hall of Fame-worthy batting average. But Elisabeth Moss is among them.
As a TV lead, she’s steered some of the modern era’s greatest programs: seven masterful seasons of “Mad Men,” two staggering seasons of “Top of the Lake,” one stirring season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” (and a few more she carried on her back). Even her single misfire is minor: The 2022 Apple TV+ series “Shining Girls” is more intriguing and better than its (lack of) recognition. Plus, it arrived amid a smattering of strong film work that befit her premium brand.

“The Veil” — Pictured: Elisabeth Moss as Imogen Salter. Cr: FX Copyright 2023, FX All Rights Reserved Elisabeth Moss, the two-time Emmy winner who brings us the chilling The Handmaid’s Tale, is back with a whole new kind of thrill ride: The Veil. This international spy miniseries throws her into a tangled web of secrets and lies. One woman holds a dangerous secret, another is desperate to reveal it – and lives hang in the balance. Moss stars alongside James Purefoy, Dali Benssalah, Yumna Marwan, and Josh Charles. For Moss, The Veil feels like a stark shift from the dystopian horrors of The Handmaid’s Tale. In FX’s gripping new miniseries “The Veil,” right versus wrong isn’t a straightforward calculation, and truth is more confounding than it seems. The action series follows cunning MI6 agent Imogen Salter (a captivating Elisabeth Moss), whose ability to assume a new identity in the blink of an eye makes her a singular asset for the most challenging missions. When Imogen is tasked with extricating a woman named Adilah El Idrissi (an outstanding Yumna Marwan) from a Turkish/Syrian refugee camp and enticing her to disclose her secrets, the spy finds herself analyzing her own moral code and a past shrouded in riddles. Exciting and astonishing, “The Veil” beautifully balances stunt-filled escapades and a rich narrative.
Though the series will take its audience on a journey to Turkey, through Paris, and into London, the story begins amid chaos. In the snow-covered refugee camp during a disorganized food drop, Adilah...

“Part of being a spy is being a shapeshifter,” Elisabeth Moss told us when she and executive producer Denise di Novi stopped by TV Insider’s interview suite at the Television Critics Association press tour to discuss their new spy thriller, The Veil, written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders). Being able to slip into different identities is something Moss could relate to in her character, fearless British MI6 agent Imogen Salter. “She’s all these different people, and when she’s being that person, she’s not lying. She’s telling the truth. She’s an actor. I know exactly who this person is.” Salter is trying to stop a terrorist attack on a major American city and must get information from Adilah El Idrissi (Yumna Marwan), who could just be the world’s most dangerous woman. Their game of cat and mouse plays out from Istanbul to Paris to London.

The Veil is another example of why we are in the golden age of brilliant female characters on screen. These strong, smart, and cunning female characters own the screen and set them ablaze. It just so happens that many can be found on FX. A network that celebrates edgy and innovative storytelling, with great female roles at the series center.
Often, these roles subvert female stereotypes. You have Anna Sawai’s brilliant performance in Shōgun, one of the greatest roles in television history, who gives a thoughtful, sumptuous, and cunning performance. Then, last year, in A Murder at the End of the World, Emma Corrin brought to life one of the most complex characters on television in recent memory.

We meet Elisabeth Moss’ Portia in the first scene of FX’s new Hulu drama The Veil, striding confidently through a busy international airport, stiletto heels precariously high, her mouth a gash of crimson lipstick. She’s meeting a shady businessman named Tomas, and they toast to a transaction successfully made. But several seconds later, Interpol rushes in and she chides Tomas for all the criminal details he spilled in the previous 37 days. She walks away, leaving him fuming and in custody.
Her name isn’t actually Portia. As she leaves, aspect and tone instantly changed, she’s already arranging her next destination — Istanbul — and her next identity, telling a person on the telephone, “I would like my name to be Imogen.” She will be Imogen for the rest of The Veil.
It’s here, two minutes into the show, that eagle-eyed viewers and English majors should already be putting together certain pieces.

If nothing else, The Veil is certainly efficient. While streaming series tend to stretch out their plots for far too many episodes and multiple seasons, Elisabeth Moss’ new Hulu thriller (premiering next Tuesday, April 30 on the streamer) is told across six lean episodes that mostly clock in well under an hour. Having seen all six, I can say it’s an effectively tense and propulsive drama that scratches that Homeland itch, with its tale of a damaged spy forming a close bond with a possible terrorist. But even in six hours, it still finds time for unnecessary subplots and bizarre...

If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

"This is my house and I'm not selling it!" Greenwich Entertainment has revealed an official US trailer for an indie drama from the country of Jordan called Inshallah a Boy, the acclaimed feature directorial debut of Jordanian filmmaker Amjad Al Rasheed. It first premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in the Critics' Week sidebar, also playing at the TIFF, London, Montclair, Thessaloniki, Stockholm Film Fests. Inshallah a Boy (which translates to "God willing a boy") is about Jordan's inheritance culture under which women are pressured to relinquish their rights to any property to male relatives. A widow named Nawal pretends to be pregnant with a son in order to save her daughter and home from a relative exploiting Jordan's patriarchal inheritance laws. It is also Jordan's official submission for Best International Film at the Academy Awards this year. Mouna Hawa stars as Nawal, joined by Haitham Omari, Yumna Marwan, Salwa Nakkara,...

When a man dies, intones the leader of a women’s wake, the light goes from the home. Nawal (Mouna Hawa), who has woken to find her increasingly tired husband Adnan has died in the night, bows her head with her accustomed piety as her very existence is erased by this prolonged eulogy to the man who is gone.
She still is here caring for their daughter, working long hours in a wealthy house as a nurse to an elderly woman with advanced dementia and maintaining a welcoming home in the flat they bought and were paying off together, using her inheritance as a deposit. That life isn’t mentioned, however. Nawal’s primary duty is to “safeguard the reputation” of her husband by staying inside for four months and 10 days. And if that is impossible, not to be outside the house after dark. “The devils roam the world after sunset,...

In Inshallah a Boy, a new film from Jordan, a young mother faces some grueling events. It’s set around the bustling capitol, Amman, a place where temperatures are rarely low. One morning, Nawal (Mouna Hawa) goes to wake her husband but finds him lifeless. She soon learns she is set to inherit their house and his truck, but also four overdue payments for the vehicle. The money is owed to the man’s brother, Rifqi (Haitham Omari), who, benefiting from the country’s Sharia inheritance system, can also claim a slice of Nawal’s home. To make matters worse, it transpires that her husband hasn’t been working in weeks and Nawal’s income won’t come close to cutting it. Our hero has two options: sell the truck and pay the debt or convince them all that she’s pregnant with a boy.

At the memorial gathering for her husband Adnan, 30-year-old Nawal (a riveting Mouna Hawa) is offered many empty words of support and so-called comfort by friends and family. “When a woman loses her husband, she loses her lover, her partner, everything in her life,” clucks a commiserating neighbor. What she fails to mention is how much is not lost, but can, under the Jordanian legal system so scathingly exposed in Amjad Al Rasheed’s fluid, gripping “Inshallah a Boy,” be taken. Employment, home, child, dignity – all can be summarily stripped from a widow who has committed the grievous crime of never having borne a son.
Al Rasheed’s precision-tooled movie is a social-realist drama rendered as an escape thriller where the labyrinth that Nawal must navigate is the Jordanian social order itself, a massive bureaucratic, patriarchal maze designed to ensure that any woman trying to evade its clutches will batter...
