With Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-in-development passion project Megalopolis recently wrapped after a smooth production, there’s been some speculation that the $100 million epic––starring Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Chloe Fineman, Kathryn Hunter, Dustin Hoffman, Db Sweeney, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Bailey Ives, Grace Vanderwaal, James Remar, and Giancarlo Esposito––could see the light of day before the end of the year, but that won’t be the case.
As announced at Wondercon 2023, Popverse reports the Syzygy, the comics publisher, will be releasing a graphic novel tie-in for Megalopolis timed with its release in 2024. Coming from Syzygy co-founder Chris Ryall and artist Jacob Phillips, who were contacted by Coppola, they spent time on set developing this adaptation. “The exciting thing is that I’ve only worked directly with him on this,” Ryall said. “This isn’t the kind of thing...

“Criminal”, Marvel’s 2006 Icon imprint title by Ed Brubaker and illustrator Sean Phillips has been greenlit fory a live-action episodic TV series adaptation at Amazon Prime Video:
“…meet ‘Leo’, who can plan the perfect heist, but only if he can be convinced the job is safe enough. See, Leo is not a shoot-first think-later guy. Leo thinks he’s a ‘pro’.
“But to some criminals, even professionals, the right payout is worth almost any risk. So when an old friend and a crooked cop approach with a plan to seize millions of dollars in contraband from an evidence transport van, Leo must make tough choices, knowing there’s nothing you can trust less in this world than a guy on the take…”

Many comic fans probably know Ed Brubaker as the man who created the Winter Soldier, reinventing long-dead sidekick Bucky Barnes. Brubaker is much more than a one-trick pony, though. He got his start writing crime comics and, after a self-imposed exile from Big Two superhero comics, he's made that his full-time gig.
He and Sean Phillips have become an inseparable writer-artist pair, putting out regular graphic novels and mini-series that always find a new way to tell Noir stories. For my money, Brubaker and Phillips' books are some of the best American comics being made right now.
"Fatale" was about a seductress whose allure is literally supernatural, while "Pulp" is about a former gunslinger who pawns off embellished versions of his escapades in early 20th-century magazines. Their definite project, though, is "Criminal," an anthology series about, well, criminals who live in the fictional Center City. Each volume tells a different story,...

Exclusive: Amazon Studios is finalizing deals for Criminal, a TV adaptation of Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips’ bestselling crime comic book series, sources tell Deadline.
Details are scarce but the project, written by Brubaker, who serves as executive producer and showrunner, is described as an interlocking universe of crime stories based on his award-winning comic book series. I hear a writers room for the potential series is up and running. A rep for Amazon Studios declined comment.
Nick Pepper, Amazon Studios’ Head of US SVOD TV Development and Series – Wholly Owned, and his lieutenant Matt King, Head of Tentpole, Genre and Universe Development of wholly owned content, are believed to have championed bringing in Criminal for development. As President of Legendary Television, Pepper signed Brubaker into a development deal there in 2019 and, along with EVP Development King, put Criminal in development at the indie studio, which is expected to...

Ed Brubaker has straddled the worlds of comic books and Hollywood for years as the co-creator of Marvel’s The Winter Soldier, as a writer on HBO’s Westworld and as an executive producer on the upcoming animated series Batman: Caped Crusader. Now, his time with filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn on the Amazon miniseries Too Old to Die Young has helped inspire a key component of his latest graphic novel, Night Fever.
The upcoming Image Comics title, which also hails from artist Sean Phillips, centers on a foreign sales agent for an American publisher who always wanted to be a writer. On a trip to a European conference, he can’t sleep one night and starts wondering the city, encountering stranger and stranger troubles as the night goes on.
Along the way, our protagonist meets what Brubaker describes as a “trickster character,” and...

Development continues on a live-action TV series adaptation of the Icon Comics graphic novel “Incognito" (2008), written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips:
"...What if you were an ex-super-villain hiding out in 'Witness Protection', but all you could think about were the days when the 'firewalls' were in place, and the rules didn't apply to you?
"Could you stand the toil of an average life after years of leaving destruction in your wake? And what if you couldn't stand it? What would you do then?..."
"'Incognito' is the story of a bad guy forced to be good," said Brubaker," and what happens when he starts to go stir-crazy from the monotony of normal life. It's a dark look at good and evil and pulp and noir all in one hard-hitting package."...

Marvel Studios has announced a whole new expanding slate of series’ and logos for Disney Plus with ‘X-Men ’97,’ ‘Spider-Man: Freshman Year,’ and ‘Marvel Zombies’ amongst them.
The announcement saw Marvel formally announce ‘Echo’ a live-action series spinning off Alaqua Cox’s character from the upcoming ‘Hawkeye’ series. Also announced were several animated series including ‘Spider-Man: Freshman Year’ and ‘Marvel Zombies’. A second season of ‘What If’ was confirmed, a Summer 2022 release window for ‘Ms. Marvel,’ new logos for ‘She-Hulk’ and ‘Secret Invasion’ were revealed, and the recently announced Agatha Harkness series finally revealed a title.

The X-Men are back — just not in live action.
Marvel Studios announced on Friday that the company is expanding its slate of animated series for Disney Plus with three new shows: “X-Men ’97,” “Spider-Man: Freshman Year,” and “Marvel Zombies.”
After Disney purchased 20th Century Fox in 2019, and the “X-Men” movie franchise was on its last legs with the poorly received “Dark Phoenix” and “The New Mutants,” many observers expected Marvel Studios to reboot the X-Men and reintegrate the characters back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Instead, for its first swing at the team of powerful mutant superheroes, the company is reaching back to its own origin story: “X-Men ’97” will be a continuation of the beloved 1990s “X-Men” animated series that ran for five seasons on the Fox network from 1992 through 1997. The show — which debuted in primetime before moving to Saturday mornings — was such a sensation that it’s widely credited for...

“I am going to commit murder. I am going to kill another human being. How easy it is to say, already I feel like a criminal. I’ve been thinking it over for weeks, but now that I’ve giving voice to my evil intention I feel comfortably relaxed. Perhaps the deed itself will be an anti-climax, but I think not.”
The box set Giallo Essentials featuring The Pyjama Girl Case (1978), The Fifth Cord (1971), and The Possessed (1965) set will be available November 30th from Arrow Video
Alongside the spaghetti western, the giallo is one of the most famous Italian export genres: films steeped in mystery and intrigue, delivered with stylised violence and unforgettable musical themes. The Possessed (1965) masterfully combines noir, mystery and giallo tropes in a proto-giallo based on one of Italy’s most notorious crimes. It tells the story of a depressed novelist (Peter Baldwin) in search of his...

Warner Bros. Pictures is considering legal action against “Line of Duty” showrunner Jed Mercurio over his new graphic novel “Sleeper.”
Warner Bros., via their subsidiary DC Comics, own the rights to another graphic novel called “Sleeper,” written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips. It was released in 2003 and has been considered for screen adaptation numerous times, most recently with Ben Affleck attached to direct.
A spokesperson for DC Comics, which is owned by Warner Bros., told Variety: “DC has no comment at this time.”

Humble Bundle is a great way to add some bulk to your digital comics (and games) collection while also doing some good in the world. They offer pay-what-you-want deals that let you divert however much of your purchase you want to charity, and if you spend at certain levels, you get more stuff. Since its inception, they’ve had bundles covering everything from G.I. Joe and Transformers comics to kids books or Top Shelf art books.
The latest bundle covers almost $1600 worth of collected editions from Image Comics, with proceeds being sent to two outstanding charities: the Binc Foundation, the nonprofit helping independent bookstores weather the Covid-related economic downturn; and the Hero Initiative, a nonprofit that helps provide a safety net to comic creators in need. But the question that might jump to mind for an overwhelmed reader is “Is this bundle actually a deal?”

It’s hard to believe it has been a decade since “Guiding Light” went off the air. The CBS soap ran for the better part of a century, lasting so long, in fact, that it actually predates television. It began in 1937 as a radio serial, then moved to the screen in 1952, beginning 57 years on daytime television. That’s more than any other drama series in American history, but CBS ultimately cancelled the show, and it came to an end on September 18, 2009.
Our forum posters have been sharing their remembrances of the show to mark the 10th anniversary of its finale. Scroll down to read some of their comments, and join the discussion here. I’ve followed Criminal on and off for a few years now, usually picking up the trades rather than waiting for the individual issues. I tend to find Brubaker is so good at leaving tantalising teases at the end of individual issues that he makes it unbearable having to wait, so I prefer to wait and read it all in one go. That being said, I suppose you lose a little of that old excitement that way, that feeling as a kid when you finished an issue of your favourite comic and had to wait an agonising 30 days to find out what happened next. So here I am, ready to pick up a single issue of Criminal, to see if that magic is still there. Perfect timing too, as this issue not only kicks off a new arc,...

Exclusive Preview: Superheroes tend to get most of the attention in the comic book industry (maybe it’s all those bright red capes), but for 13 years now writer Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips have been the prolific vanguards of noir storytelling while producing a truly killer stack of bestselling crime comics, including Criminal, Fatale, Kill or Be Killed and The Fade Out.
Brubaker & Phillips make a return to the scene of their earliest crime together with issue No. 5 of their new monthly Criminal series for Image Comics. The issue hits stores this week with the story called “The Night of the Hunter,” and we have an exclusive excerpt below. The Night of the Hunter kicks off the Criminal: Cruel Summer story arc, which will be the longest in the brand’s illustrious history, which dates back to October 2006.
Instead of chronicling a central, linear story, Criminal has more of a mosaic approach.

The DC Universe is bringing out the dead. Meet the DC zombies in this exclusive first look at DCEased #1 from DC Comics.
DCeased feels long overdue. The global zombie phenomenon really took off almost ten years ago when The Walking Dead first aired, but it has been an ongoing comics concern for more than 15 years. The Walking Dead’s first issue came out in 2003 before kicking off a television phenomenon in 2010, and since then everyone from Marvel to Idw’s Hasbro licenses have done big zombie events. Marvel Zombies in particular holds up well to this day. Criminal's Sean Phillips on art with obvious choice writer Robert Kirkman unsurprisingly told very effective and horrifying zombie stories using popular superhero characters.
It looks like this unlikely trend will continue with DCeased. Goofy name aside, it looks like the book is going to work because it has some real...

Get ready for a major soap swap. It was recently reported that Michelle Stafford is leaving “General Hospital” and will be returning to the role that made her a star: Phyllis Summers on “The Young and the Restless.” Unfortunately, that means the actress currently playing Phyllis, Gina Tognoni, is out. What do you think of the actress switch? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
Stafford played Phyllis on and off for almost 20 years, first joining the cast in 1994 and ultimately leaving in 2013. In that time she earned 10 Daytime Emmy nominations, winning Best Supporting Actress in 1997 and then Best Actress in 2004. After her exit from the CBS soap she joined the cast of “Gh” as Nina Reeves in 2014, and she’s been playing her ever since.

“Oh this is some bull,” tweeted Rolling Stone TV critic Alan Sepinwall about Netflix’s announcement on March 14 that they’re cancelling “One Day at a Time” after three seasons. Well, Sepinwall tweeted a gif of Justina Machado from the show saying that, but the sentiment applies across the internet, from Twitter to our own forums.
Netflix‘s statement on Twitter read, “We’ve made the very difficult decision not to renew ‘One Day at a Time‘ for a fourth season. The choice did not come easily — we spent several weeks trying to find a way to make another season work but in the end simply not enough people watched to justify another season.” Though the streaming service has been notoriously mum about what the viewership figures for its shows and movies actually are.

Nearly a year after its surprising drop on Netflix after the Super Bowl, The Cloverfield Paradox arrives on both Blu-ray and DVD this week, making it just one of the highlights of this week’s batch of home media releases. The Possessed will be available on Blu-ray February 5th From Arrow Video
The Possessed is a wonderfully atmospheric proto-giallo based on one of Italy s most notorious crimes, the Alleghe killings, and adapted from the book on that case by acclaimed literary figure Giovanni Comisso.
Peter Baldwin stars as Bernard, a depressed novelist who sets off in search of his old flame Tilde, a beautiful maid who works at a remote lakeside hotel. Bernard is warmly greeted by the hotel owner Enrico and his daughter Irma, but Tilde has disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Bernard undertakes an investigation and is soon plunged into a disturbing drama of familial secrets, perversion, madness and murder…
Co-written by Giulio Questi and co-directed by Luigi Bazzoni, The Possessed masterfully combines film noir, mystery and giallo tropes, whilst also drawing on the formal innovations of 1960s art cinema (particularly the films of Michelangelo Antonioni). A uniquely dreamlike take on true crime,...

Let’s get this out of the way right now. This list is wrong. Although I try to be as objective as possible when putting it together there is no way to make it completely void of my subjective opinion. So why do this? For one I enjoy doing it as it pushes me to read comics I would not normally read. The biggest reason is that my favorite thing is to recommend comics and this allows me to do just that. Lastly, I hope it shows just how varied comics can be and the amazing content there is each year.
The other part of this is the criteria used to create this list. Comics provide a unique challenge in end of year list creation due to the many different formats they are released. You have straight graphic novels that are self-contained stories, ongoing monthly titles, one shot, mini-series, webcomics,...
