“Project Runway” is down to five designers, but are they the right five? All of the eliminations are decided by judges Karlie Kloss, Elaine Welteroth, Brandon Maxwell and a number of guest judges who have cycled through over the course of the season. But while mentor Christian Siriano is able to guide the designers over the course of each challenge, he wasn’t given a Save like his predecessor Tim Gunn. Was that a mistake? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
Gunn didn’t get to critique the designers’ finished looks or decide the eliminations either. But he had something just as valuable: the Tim Gunn Save. Given his expertise and his close working relationships with the designers, he was given the power to overrule a judges’ decision and rescue one contestant from elimination, starting in season 12. And some of those saves turned out to be quite fruitful.

Yowsa! Gorgeous male models in the work room and Swatch the Mood mascot finally getting the cameo we have been longing for on episode 9 of “Project Runway’s” return on Bravo. This week, the final eight designers were tasked with what was probably the most fun challenge so far on Season 17 — making outlandish performance costumes fit for Sir Elton John circa ’70s and ’80s, whose life is the basis of the upcoming movie “Rocketman.”
As Gold Derby senior editor Daniel Montgomery notes, “First of all, I love the menswear challenges. Not just because of male models, but because it’s fun to watch the show and imagine myself in the clothes. I suppose I could wear one of those long ball gowns and really channel my inner Billy Porter at the Oscars, but menswear challenges are still more up my alley.”

Jamall Osterholm was having a steady run on “Project Runway” for the first few weeks of the season, coasting by with safe scores from the judges. But in recent weeks he’s been tripping over his own ambitious design ideas, and now we think his days might be numbered. According to the combined predictions of “Runway” fans, Osterholm is likely to be sent home tonight in episode seven. Make or update your own predictions right here.
Osterholm’s first misstep was in “High Fashion to High Street,” when he had a bold concept of streetwear that would take a young urban woman of color and place her in the luxurious finery of Elizabethan England. Unfortunately, he bit off more than he could chew and ended up with an unfinished dress that never really followed the basic concept of the streetwear challenge. But judge Brandon Maxwell reassured him that at age...

Last week on ‘Project Runway,’ luxury streetwear proved to be embullient Kovid Kapoor‘s downfall but Bishme Cromartie was inspired by his Baltimore roots to make an urban outfit whose standout piece was a sparkly blue bomber jacket (head to Nineteenth Admendment to buy a copy for $300 if you wish). Others earning high scores were Venny Etienne, whose cool outfit was inspired by a sneaker, and Garo Sparo (loved his cinched corset). But among the bottom dwellers were Jamall Osterholm, who didn’t even finish sewing his design, and Rakan Shams Aldeen, who didn’t really meet the requirements of the challenge. Let’s see if these two redeem themselves on our episode 6 recap of Season 17, “Power Play.” All times are Eastern.

Rakan Shams Aldeen has had a shaky run on “Project Runway” so far. After he was nearly eliminated in “All the Rage” he got one of the highest scores in “Survive in Style.” But then he was back to the bottom three in “High Fashion to High Street.” The judges have been frustrated by his stubborn, set-in-his-ways approach to the design challenges, so will that finally be his downfall?
As of this writing, most Gold Derby users who have made their predictions say Aldeen’s days are numbered. He gets leading odds of 46/25 of being eliminated. He didn’t listen to mentor Christian Siriano when he expressed concerns about Aldeen’s drab fabric choice in the full-body print, and he ignored Siriano again when he was confused by Aldeen’s Syrian farmer concept for the “High Fashion” streetwear challenge; the judges didn’t see any streetwear elements in his resulting look.

The “Project Runway” designers came in out of the cold in episode five, “High Fashion to High Street.” After last week’s unconventional materials challenge in the woods the dozen remaining contestants stepped up … to the streets. So who finished the challenge on easy street, and who was told to hit the bricks? Find out below in our live blog for all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
“High Street” introduced the designers to Dapper Dan, a Harlem fashion icon who brought together the worlds of sophisticated design and casual streetwear. And that was the challenge: to create their own interpretations of luxury streetwear. But that wasn’t the most difficult part. The designers also had an even bigger time crunch than usual: they only had until midnight that night to finish their looks.

I love Kovid Kapoor on “Project Runway” for his positivity and infectious attitude, but that hasn’t translated to consistently strong designs over the course of the first four episodes this season. He has narrowly avoided elimination twice already, and now we think there’s a strong chance he’ll be eliminated in episode five. But there’s someone else we think is even likelier to be on the chopping block: Sonia Kasparian.
According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Kasparian gets leading odds of 12/5 of being sent home. We didn’t see very much of her in the first three episodes of the show, and when she was more prominently featured last week in the “Survive in Style” unconventional materials challenge, she ended up in the bottom three for her crumbling Mylar dress. Perhaps producers haven’t featured her very much because they know she’s not long for the fashion world.

Sometimes no news is good news. After four weeks of competition “Project Runway” designers Bishme Cromartie and Jamall Osterholm are the only two remaining who haven’t gotten a single critique from the judges yet. That’s good news in the sense that neither designer has gotten a low score thus far, but it also means that neither of them has stood out enough to get a high score. Are they due for recognition — or a tongue-lashing — in week five?
Flying under the radar in the middle of the pack is better than only being singled out for your mistakes. That has been the case for Garo Sparo and Sonia Kasparian, whose only critiques thus far have been negative. And poor Kovid Kapoor has been on an emotional roller coaster, landing in the bottom two, then the top three, then back to the bottom two over the last three weeks.

I think the “Project Runway” judges have been hit and miss this season, but boy did they whiff this one. In “Survive in Style,” an unconventional materials challenge, the judges eliminated designer Afa Ah Loo for making an impractical and inadequate look out of a map and a hammock, but when we asked our readers for their input hardly any of them backed up the judges’ decision. Scroll down to see our complete poll results at the bottom of this post.
The judges called Afa’s look a “shipwreck,” criticized him for a lack of creativity, and they thought it was too light on actual clothing for a survival challenge (even though other designers presented less covered looks). They rushed to the model’s aid to warm her with blankets given how little of her was covered. But other models whose looks were called safe would have been freezing their...

The great outdoors stood in for fabric emporium Mood this week as the 13 remaining Season 17 designers on “Project Runway” made a mad dash around a woodsy and soon-to-be-wet campground to scrounge up materials for the always nerve-rattling unconventional challenge. But while Gold Derby senior editors Daniel Montgomery and Susan Wloszczyna were relatively relaxed and dry while watching the contestants struggle to make high fashion out of twigs, leaves, fishing lures and sleeping bags, that did not stop them from venting their disappointment about the winning and losing designs.
“You texted me before when you watched this episode that you disagreed with the judges,” says Daniel about Susan’s fit of bad-calls pique. “I watched the episode and I disagreed with the judges. But we didn’t specifically say in what way we disagreed.”
Let’s just get to how the judges Elaine Welteroth, Brandon Maxwell, Nina Garcia and host Karlie Kloss...

After more than a decade on Lifetime “Project Runway” returned to Bravo on Thursday night, March 14, for a 17th season that once again brings together 16 designers from around the world to compete for fashion supremacy. So who made the best first impressions in “First Impressions”? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
“Runway” spent its first five seasons on Bravo before moving to Lifetime. But the fallout from the sexual abuse allegations against Harvey Weinstein resulted in Lifetime dropping the series, which was produced by the Weinstein Company. Then Bravo picked it back up. But the network switch isn’t the only big change for the show this year.

“Project Runway” fans have been in limbo since season 16 aired in the fall of 2017. The series was produced by the Weinstein Company and thus became a casualty of the sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein. After years on Lifetime (which is currently airing its final season of “Project Runway All Stars“), the show was picked back up by its original network Bravo, but without its hosts Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn. They’re making it work, however: season 17 of the long-running fashion competition premieres Thursday, March 14, at 8:00pm.
Stepping in for Klum as host is Victoria’s Secret model Karlie Kloss. And taking over Gunn’s mentoring duties is a man who understands full well how it feels to be a contestant on the series: season four “Runway” champ Christian Siriano. But they’ve got big shoes to fill. Klum and Gunn were perennial nominees at the Emmys for their hosting duties,...
