What if Superman had turned out to be evil? That was the idea explored by director David Yarovesky’s super-powered horror film Brightburn, which was released back in 2019. Even though the movie made under $33 million at the global box office, the budget was low enough (somewhere in the range of 6 to 12 million) that producer James Gunn said they were talking about a sequel just a couple months after the film reached screens. Then we went a long time with no mentions of Brightburn 2 – until production company The H Collective, which was also behind Brightburn, confirmed that a sequel was in development last September. Things got confusing last month when Gunn took to Threads to say there are “no plans at all” for a Brightburn 2 right now… but Gunn has cleared up some of the confusion by revealing that a sequel is unlikely due to a complicated rights situation.

Brightburn, the 2019 superhero horror film produced by James Gunn, is getting a sequel. The film, which put a dark twist on Superman’s origin story, followed a young boy named Brandon who crash-landed on Earth from another planet and discovered he had superpowers. However, instead of using them for good, he became a violent and murderous supervillain.
The film was a modest success at the box office, earning $32 million on a small budget, and received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. However, it also sparked interest in the potential of a cinematic universe of evil superheroes, as the post-credits scene hinted at the existence of other super-powered beings who were terrorizing the world, such as evil versions of Aquaman and Wonder Woman.

It’s now been four years since the release of David Yarovesky’s Brightburn, a horror take on Young Superman that was notably produced by James Gunn. The film told the origin story of super-villain Brandon Breyer, and it pulled in over $33 million worldwide on a $6 million production budget. That sounds like just about enough to warrant a sequel, eh?
Deadline reports today, “The H Collective is launching H3 Entertainment, a company it says will look to integrate the Metaverse, Web3 and AI into a slate of films.”
“The company tells us it intends to incorporate new technology into the production process of projects it has in development, including a sequel to horror movie Brightburn (the IP is co-owned by H Collective and fellow producer James Gunn),” the site’s report continues.

DC Studios dropped one hell of an announcement this week when it was made public that James Gunn was hard at work on a new "Superman" film, specifically a movie centered on a younger version of the character than previously seen in the Dceu. It's an exciting time to be a fan of DC, because after the success of "The Suicide Squad," the refreshing spin-off series, "Peacemaker," and his "Guardians of the Galaxy" work over at Marvel, Gunn has more than proven he's exactly what Warner Bros. needs to usher in the new era of superhero entertainment. Most are familiar with Gunn's pre-Marvel/DC work on horror films like "Tromeo and Juliet," "Slither," "Dawn of the Dead," and the live-action "Scooby-Doo" movies, but Gunn has been making superhero films outside of the two major companies for a very long time.

After it's recent theatrical run, Brightburn is now available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. This superhero horror film stars Jackson A. Dunn in a role that mirrors the Superman origin story, but takes a Very dark turn. I had a chance to catch up with Jackson, who told me about his experience filming the movie, working with Elizabeth Banks and David Denman, and what he's like to see in the sequel.
Brightburn combines a superhero setup with more traditional “evil child” horror tropes. Do you consider yourself a horror fan? What are some of the horror movies that you enjoy watching?
Jackson A. Dunn: Yeah, I'm a big horror fan. I loved A Quiet Place, Hush… and The Babadook is one of my all-time favorites.
When approaching the character of Brandon, did you find yourself gravitating more toward superhero or horror characters when it came to inspiration?

What if someone with superpowers akin to Superman decided to use their abilities for evil instead of good? The chilling answer to that question is explored in David Yarovesky's Brightburn (which Heather Wixson wrote "soars as a gory slasher/superhero hybrid" in her 4-star review), and if you missed it in theaters or want to experience it again, you'll be pleased to know that Sony is releasing the film on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on August 20th (following an August 6th digital release), and we've been provided with the cover art and full list of bonus features:

The James Gunn-produced super powered horror thriller Brightburn was released this weekend and I’m sure many of you went to the theater to check it out. I did, and I thought it was ok.
I didn’t love the movie. I liked it, I thought it was well made with a solid script and great acting, but damn… it was a bummer of a story. There was really no redeeming value to it, it was just a dark film that left me feeling bummed out and joyless at the end.
Regardless of how it left me feeling, the creative team did a great job bringing their story to life. If their objective was to make you feel like crap by the end of the movie, they totally succeeded!

Disney’s live-action “Aladdin” remake is on its way to a commendable Memorial Day weekend debut with an estimated $109 million over the four-day period.
The musical fantasy starring Will Smith and Mena Massoud should uncover about $87 million in its first three days from 4,476 North American theaters after taking in $31 million on Friday. Should estimates hold, “Aladdin” will mark the sixth-highest Memorial Day weekend debut of all time, just behind 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” with $110.5 million.
Guy Ritchie directed the remake, with Smith taking on the role of Robin Williams’ Genie and Massoud portraying the titular hero. Naomi Scott stars as Jasmine, along with Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, and Billy Magnussen. Ritchie also co-wrote the script alongside John August, with Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich producing.
Also debuting this weekend is Screen Gems’ “Brightburn,” which took in $3 million on Friday and is headed for a $10 million four-day start from 2,607 domestic theaters.

Chicago – The opening to the 1950s “Adventures of Superman” TV series includes the words “strange visitor from another planet.” But because Supes had used his subsequent powers for good, he eventually was found not so strange. What if, however, he had been evil, and used his powers destructively? The new film “Brightburn” speculates on such a phenomenon.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
The premise is simple, yet could have been so easy to mess up. The creators – producer James Gunn (“The Avengers” series), director David Yarovesky, with writers Brian and Mark Gunn (James’ brother and cousin) – take care to use the situation as symbolism for adolescent emergence and emphasis an outside force (puberty?) as changing the power dynamic within this “superman.” There is so much to unpack in a tight story, there could be a new cinema wing built just to analyze it. Brightburn stars David Denman and Jackson A. Dunn on playing a dad and his son -- who happens to be a superbeing.
What if a powerful being -- the kind we usually refer to as a superhero -- came to Earth and was not interested in protecting humanity but destroying it? Brutal and bludgeoning, David Yarovesky’s Brightburn is a film designed to knock the breath from your chest and subvert expectations. An alien infant crash-lands to Kansas. A childless couple yearns for a baby. The humans come across the tiny spaceship and raise the alien-who-looks-like-a-human as their own. If you think you’ve heard this story before, that is not the case. The script (written by both Brian and Mark Gunn) is an inventive, if illogical glance at the Superman myth, a ‘what if’ re-telling of a situation we all assume we’d handle correctly.

Disney’s live-action “Aladdin” is heading for at least $100 million in North America during the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend, early estimates showed Friday.
“Aladdin” will likely finish Friday with around $30 million, including $7 million in Thursday night previews. Sony’s launch of horror-thriller “Brightburn” should pull in about $10 million for the holiday weekend and United Artists-Annapurna’s comedy “Booksmart” will open at around $9 million.
Disney’s guidance as of mid-day Friday was for a more conservative estimate of an $80 million to $90 million launch while one rival pegged the opening at $105 million. Prior to opening, “Aladdin” has been pegged to gross between $75 million and $85 million at about 4,400 sites over the four-day weekend.
Guy Ritchie directed the reboot, starring Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Will Smith as the Genie, Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Marwan Kenzari as Jafar. The original 1992 animated movie, with Robin Williams as the Genie, grossed a massive $502 million globally and won two Oscars.

Director David Yarovesky’s obsession with horror movies puts a unique spin on Brightburn.
While James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) is the big filmmaking name on the new superhero/horror hybrid Brightburn -- he produced the picture, which was written by his brother Mark and cousin Brian -- the person actually behind the camera on the movie is director David Yarovesky. A longtime friend of Gunn’s, Yarovesky cut his teeth on videos, commercials and short films before making his feature writing and directing debut with the micro-budget horror movie The Hive.
Yarovesky is still working with a relatively modest budget on Brightburn, but that’s part of the movie’s charm: in many ways it’s a bit of a throwback to the sort of mid-level horror sleepers that dominated the late 1970s and 1980s. The movie stars Elizabeth Banks and David Denman as a...

David Yarovesky’s Brightburn earns every puddle of eye juice, mangled corpse, and horrific disfigured gore effect of its *hard* R-rating. Yes, this is the “evil Superman origin” slasher promised. Gruesomely inclined to scare prospective parents off pregnancy timetables; complicated enough to thread adoption drama through rural massacre despicableness. A child discovering limitless power, lied to by society, wrestling temperamental consciousness while befalling the corruption of man. There’s a lot to savor, but the flavors end up somewhat expected despite mature adolescent horrors.
Can you kill what you love or love something that kills? Brightburn isn’t the nightmare to answer such crippling caretaker choices, but hey, here are some wicked genre kills you’ll never scrub away!

“Aladdin” comes from director Guy Ritchie and stars Will Smith as the Genie, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott and Marwan Kenzari. It opens against Sony and Screen Gems’ horror film “Brightburn,” and the raunchy teen comedy “Booksmart” from first-time director Olivia Wilde.
Disney is projecting the family fantasy film to earn between $75-85 million in its opening weekend, with independent trackers saying it could be as low as $65 million. That’s in part because social media buzz for the film has been disappointing following early looks at Will Smith’s Genie and other clips. Critics, however, while split, said that the early negative attention was overblown and that the film is better than the initial marketing gave it credit.

Disney’s live-action “Aladdin” flew to $7 million during Thursday night previews in North America.
That’s well above the $5.7 million that “Pokemon Detective Pikachu” earned two weeks ago on its way to a $54 million three-day opening. Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” took in $5.5 million in previews on the same night in 2017 on its way to a $78 million opening over the Memorial Day weekend.
Sony’s horror-thriller “Brightburn” pulled in $950,000 for Thursday night previews starting at 7 p.m. in 2,257 locations. United Artists-Annapurna’s comedy “Booksmart” took $875,000 in previews.
“Aladdin” has been pegged to gross between $75 million to $85 million at about 4,400 sites over the four-day Memorial Day weekend. That would be above the $45 million opening for Disney’s live-action “Dumbo” during March 29-31, the studio’s most recent remake of its animated classic films.

What if someone discovered they had god-like superpowers and decided to use them to destroy humanity instead of saving it? Later tonight, the slasher/superhero mash-up Brightburn arrives on the big screen, which was directed by David Yarovesky and produced by James Gunn. The story, written by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, revolves around the Breyer family, who live on a farm in the quiet town of Brightburn, Kansas. Lori (Elizabeth Banks) and Kyle (David Denman) are doing their best to raise their adopted son Brandon (Jackson A. Dunn) properly, but once he hits his pre-teens, it’s painfully aware to his parents that their kid has some major issues that could potentially put everyone in danger if they cannot get Brandon and his abilities under control.
At the recent press day for Brightburn, Daily Dead spoke with Yarovesky, and he chatted about the difficulties of making familiar superhero tropes scary for today’s audiences, and the importance of nailing the look of the Brightburn character as well. Yarovesky also...

What if baby Superman crashed onto the Earth and turned out to be an evil bastard instead of a do-gooder? That’s the idea behind Brightburn, a horrorshow that doesn’t have a clue about what to do with a clever premise. Produced by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), who unfortunately left the screenwriting to his less-talented brother Brian and their cousin Mark — it’s not a good day for nepotism — this superhero/scary movie mash-up never catches fire. Director David Yarovesky (The Hive) doesn’t just demand audiences to suspend disbelief.

The reviews are in for the James Gunn-produced horror flick “Brightburn,” and while some critics enjoyed the film as a dark alternative to the Superman origin story, others pointed to its “shockingly predictable” story.
“What if Superman started out evil? And what if that was the only idea you had for your movie? Hence ‘Brightburn,’ a wafer-thin exercise in a supposedly new genre called ‘superhero horror,’ but what is really just a body-count flick haphazardly grafted onto a tweaked version of Superman’s origin story — except this version’s isolated farm boy with indestructible (and destructive) alien powers would rather lift a car not to rescue someone but to kill a grown-up who wasn’t nice to him,” TheWrap critic Robert Abele wrote in his review.

"He's not here to save the world," says Elizabeth Banks about a key character in her new film, Brightburn. Banks portrays Tori Breyer, a kindly woman who discovers an infant in the woods outside the home she shares with her husband Kyle (David Denman). Her motherly instincts move her to adapt young Brandon (Jackson A. Dunn) as her own child. Yet Brandon's actions and mysterious powers become increasingly alarming, not only to Tori and Kyle, but also to the small community where...

When Disney first released “Aladdin” in 1992, Bill Clinton was just settling in to the Oval Office, “Game of Thrones” wasn’t much more than a book idea percolating in the mind of author George R.R. Martin, and Johnny Carson was wrapping up his stint as “Tonight Show” host.
In some ways, 2019 feels like a whole new world. But Disney is hoping that even 27 years later, the prospect of seeing flashy musical numbers set to timeless tunes like “One Jump Ahead” and “Friend Like Me” will entice moviegoers young and old into theaters for an updated take on “Aladdin,” the story of a charming Arabian street rat who stumbles upon a genie’s magical lamp.
“There’s a lot of goodwill toward these characters,” said Jeff Bock, a media analyst at Exhibitor Relations. “I think it will work for families over Memorial Day weekend.”

As someone who has a deep admiration for superhero stories of all types, Brightburn was, as the kids say these days, “100 percent my jam.” It hits all the necessary beats one would expect from an origin story, but once it heads into full-blown horror territory, that’s when Brightburn transforms into a truly creepy and unsettling exploration of just what would happen if an otherworldly entity that had endless powers wasn’t bound to our society by any kind of morality code, and decided to use that to fulfill their darkest impulses.
At the start of Brightburn, we’re introduced to Tori (Elizabeth Banks) and Kyle Breyer (David Denman), who have had difficulties conceiving a child and are desperate to complete their family. One fateful night, a ship crashes on their farm in Brightburn, Kansas, containing what looks to be a tiny infant, and the couple immediately thinks their prayers have been answered.

“Superman” meets “The Omen” in “Brightburn,” a watchable but super-silly mix of superheroics and evil-child horror that mashes together singularly uninspired ideas from both. Offering R-rated fantasy competition to “Aladdin” this Memorial Day weekend, it should do Ok with undiscriminating audiences seeking familiar, forgettable genre thrills. But the franchise prayers that an open-ended fadeout dangles seem unlikely to be answered, unless they’re heard in the realm of cheaper, direct-to-streaming sequels.
Not that this hopeful kickoff is exactly deluxe, though it does rep a modest budgetary leap from helmer David Yarovesky’s prior feature, 2014 sci-fi horror “The Hive.” The advertising for “Brightburn” prominently bills James Gunn, “visionary filmmaker behind ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’” That it turns out he’s just a producer here (relatives Brian and Mark Gunn are the scenarists) may lead to some annoyance among those expecting more than B-movie-level spectacle.

In 2003, Mark Millar penned a three-issue series of “Superman” comic books that hinged on one big idea: what if baby Kal-El crash-landed not in the American heartland, but in Cold War era Ukraine? David Yarovesky’s “Brightburn” offers a similar twist on the superhero mythos, albeit one less refined and much, much ickier: what if Superman was a murderous asshole? Produced by James Gunn (who has done both actual superhero films and his own twisted “Super”) and written by two of his own brethren (brother Brian Gunn and cousin Mark Gunn), the film’s bent towards revisionist superhero history is certainly compelling, but stuck in the confines of the horror genre, it flames out far more than it flies.
The Gunns’ decision to riff on the Superman story is ambitious enough, and that’s to say nothing of how transparently they go out about it: the film opens on a sleepy Kansas farm,...

As has been a recent annual tradition, Disney will release a new film for Memorial Day this weekend, and this year’s offering is Guy Ritchie’s remake of the Disney Renaissance classic “Aladdin,” starring Mena Massoud as the heroic street rat and Will Smith as his wacky Genie.
It’s one of two Renaissance remakes on tap from Disney this summer, the other being “The Lion King” in July. Both have the potential to add to the billions the studio has already grossed this year from Marvel Studios, but first “Aladdin” will have to overcome the weak social media buzz that has brewed around it, as well as a very tough set of competing films set to come from other studios in the next few weeks.

Considering how much power Superman wields, it’s often been discussed what it’d be like if he went off the deep end and used his abilities for his own benefit – or for evil. In recent years, the Injustice video games and comics have done a fine job of exploring this concept. Similarly, writer Mark Waid showed us what it’d be like if an analog for the Man of Steel, the Plutonian, walked this path in Irredeemable.
Without having to acquire any licenses from either DC Comics or Boom! Studios, screenwriters Mark and Brian Gunn have managed to bring this idea to the silver screen with the upcoming horror film, Brightburn. Even though their brother, James Gunn, is name-dropped in the marketing campaign, it’s important to note that he serves as a producer. David Yarovesky, meanwhile, handles directorial duties.

What if someone with superpowers akin to Superman decided to use their abilities for evil instead of good? The chilling answer to that question is explored in David Yarovesky's Brightburn, and ahead of the movie's theatrical release later this week, Sony released the film's final trailer, confirming that "evil has found its superhero."
Below, you can watch the final trailer for Brightburn (following its exclusive premiere on Bloody Disgusting), featuring Jackson A. Dunn as Brandon Breyer, a troubled extraterrestrial who seems more intent on wiping out mankind with his superpowers than saving it.

After the firing (and since rehiring), of director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy 3, his writer brother Brian and cousin Mark Gunn crafted this dark Superman-like origin/ spin with Jg on board as producer. In many ways, Brightburn could be interpreted as a twisted manifestation of Gunn’s burnt feelings for superhero cinema after the Disney debacle. With his family writing and director David Yarovesky (The Hive) behind the mic, Brightburn sears like a great flaming bird flip: a sit, swivel and spin on superhero franchises, crafted with an energy, ironic venom and flair to make it timely, fun and electrifying.
The film starts in Brightburn, Kansas, on the farm of thirty-something married couple Tori and Kyle Breyer (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman), who have been trying for a while to fall pregnant. Cue the mammoth fiery meteorite/ space capsule (conveniently carrying a baby) that comes crashing down into the forest near their farm.
