Many of our greatest comedians have something hard and unrelenting under the surface. The pursuit of laughs can be mercenary; there’s a reason that standups, on a good night, will say that they “killed.” Kevin Hart, never shy about his ambition, now brings the subtext of a comedy career to the surface. His new limited series “True Story,” a violent scripted drama executive produced by Eric Newman of “Narcos” and made for Netflix, is practically glowing with anger. There’s invective directed at the public, at the hangers-on that come with fame, and especially at the character of his brother. These resentments consume “True Story” from the inside, resulting in a potent testament to self-regard.
Before chaos breaks out, we meet the comic known as “Kid,” who’s just like the star playing him, only more so: His tour draws droves of fans, all of whom want something from him.

As inspirational college sports movies go, “Heart of the Champions” doesn’t go, or row, nearly far enough off the beaten path. It’s every bit as boilerplate as its generic title might indicate, distinguished only by its focus on an underdog rowing team rather than the amateur baseball, basketball, football or hockey players usually involved in similar scenarios. There’s just so much even a fine actor like Michael Shannon can do to freshen such stale material, even when he’s given a plum role as a demanding coach who expects the impossible from his young charges. Of course, he might have been able to do more had he also been given more screen time, but, alas, we’ll never know.
The time is 1999-2000, and the place is the fictional Beeston University, an institution of higher learning that desperately needs a new coach after its rowing team finishes...

"Your are gonna learn something that can't be taught in a book or classroom." Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for Heart of Champions, a sports drama formerly known as Swing before this release retitle. This recently premiered at the Oldenburg Film Festival a few months ago. The film is about a trouble rowing crew. During their last year at an Ivy League college in 1999, a group of friends and crew teammates' lives are changed forever when an army vet takes over as coach of their dysfunctional rowing team. Michael Shannon stars as Coach Murphy, with a cast including Alexander Ludwig, Charles Melton, Alex MacNicoll, Ash Santos, Lilly Krug, and David James Elliott. This doesn't seem like it has anything new to offer, just another story of a team learning to play together to be better, like so many other sports movies before. And it's produced by the Winklevoss twins,...

Hail a different Satan?
If you just finished the “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” finale, you probably have a lot of questions racing through your mind. But the biggest has to be, “What the heck just happened at the end there?” Yes, the season closer for the eighth installment in Ryan Murphy’s FX anthology series simultaneously gave us way too much information and not even remotely enough context for that information in the last couple minutes, which resulted in us knowing even less than we did going into this finale.
So what happens here is those two teens who were kidnapped and brought to Outpost 3, who haven’t been seen since Episode 3, popped up with just a few minutes left on the clock. We see them in the new timeline after Mallory (Billie Lourd) turned back...

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the finale of “American Horror Story: Apocalypse.”)
We wondered last week how exactly Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and the rest of the creative team on “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” could possibly finish up this whole thing in just one episode. And in Wednesday’s finale, we got our answer: not that well. The “Ahs: Apocalypse” season finale speeds through the resolution to what was a pretty epic tale, leaving big plot threads dangling and not really paying off on so many points the show had set up early on.
So in order to work through our frustration with the finale, let’s take a look at the parts of the episode, and the season as a whole, that just don’t make sense now that it’s finally all over.

Spoiler Alert: The following article contains details of tonight’s season finale of American Horror Story Apocalypse.
In what could be the ultimate crossover event in American Horror Story history — actually, it’s probably the only one. There was plenty of time traveling, some surprise appearances from familiar faces (hello Marie Laveau!), a lot of bloodshed, and yes, even more time traveling. As we saw the previous seasons of Murderhouse, Coven and even a smidge of Hotel converge, it was a raucous, campy time that was totally on brand for the Ryan Murphy FX franchise.
The finale brought us back in time closer to the start of the season. At Outpost 3, Cordelia (Sarah Paulson) and the gang brought Dinah (Adina Porter), Coco (Leslie Grossman), and Mallory (Billie Lourd) back from the dead. And of course, Michael (Cody Fern), the fabulous anti-christ doing...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “The Morning After,” the second episode of “American Horror Story: Apocalypse.”
The arrival of a grown-up Michael Langdon (Cody Fern) at the end of “American Horror Story: Apocalypse’s” premiere thrust the eighth installment of Ryan Murphy’s twisted anthology series into action. The audience who knows Michael from the “Murder House” first season knows he was a devil-baby, born to Vivien Harmon (Connie Britton) from the dearly departed Tate Langdon (Evan Peters). But the characters of “Apocalypse” don’t have such knowledge, so to them, his arrival appears to be one of a savior, choosing between the Outpost’s residents to see who might be worthy of taking to The Sanctuary.
Apparently, these $100-million-a-spot Outpost bunkers are so easily overthrown that most of them have fallen by now, so Langdon is there to save the day for a few lucky citizens.

The biggest buzz surrounding the new season of American Horror Story is the huge number of returning cast members playing their characters from Murder House and Coven. But one of the most mysterious characters in American Horror Story: Apocalypse is Emily. We don't really know anything about her - not even her last name. She appears briefly in the trailer but not in a scene that gives us any clues as to who she is. Oddly enough, this mystery is sort of fitting for actress Ash Santos, who's probably not a name you've heard before.
Santos grew up in New York, and although she was interested in performing, she didn't seriously pursue it as a child. Upon moving to Salt Lake City, she began acting in indie and short films. Originally credited as Ashley Santos, she took on several smaller roles in Hallmark's Christmas rom-coms from 2015 to 2017. These included...

I keep discovering the benefits of having Amazon Prime. Free shipping seems to be only the tip of the iceberg of perks. A huge perk is the Amazon Prime Video app that has free streaming for Prime members. This app not only has some unconventional titles amidst established classics, but it also has the capability to download films and TV shows to watch offline when time may be on your side, but Wi-Fi availability isn’t. I know other streaming apps have that functionality also, but from personal experience, the Amazon one seems to be the only one that works consistently.
