One of the biggest American networks, ABC, has made the fans of yet another show a little bit unhappy. Despite the fact that viewers claim they aren't surprised every time the network cancels another show, they were still hoping that their beloved Alaskan show wouldn't suffer the same fate.
However, in May it was announced that Alaska Daily, Tom McCarthy's drama starring Hilary Swank, would not be renewed for a second season. The reason is simple: the show did not get the ratings the network was hoping for. But that doesn't mean the show didn't have a huge following who loved it.
What Is Alaska Daily About?
At the center of the story is Hilary Swank's character, Eileen Fitzgerald. She is an extremely talented, award-winning journalist from New York who, after a fall from grace, has decided to leave her life behind and move to Alaska with a desire to change her life.

The phrase “faith-based drama” is one to strike fear into the hearts of all but the most devout, since it usually signals endless platitudes and piety with very little drama. There are touches of that in this real-life story, but thankfully director Jon Gunn and writers Meg Tilly and Kelly Fremon Craig have kept it to a minimum, letting the kindness and charity of the characters shine without too much sermonising. It also benefits from solid performances and a genuinely heartbreaking set-up.

Times are changing. And for the better. Over the course of the past decade, the industry has achieved great heights in promoting inclusivity. The atmosphere has improved and sections who were once shunned have luckily been able to put the days of discrimination behind. It was for this reason that Hilary Swank has revealed that she would refuse to do a role that would go on to win her an Academy Award.

Hilary Swank has reflected on her role in Boys Don’t Cry two decades ago, saying changing awareness means she wouldn’t take the part today.
Swank won her first Oscar for the role of real-life transgender man Brandon Teena, murdered in a hate crime, in the movie which was released in 2000. She told The Times of London newspaper:
“Now for the most part, in most places, it’s accepted to be a trans person. [But] at that time, people weren’t even coming out as gay and lesbian, it was a career killer, or whatever. They weren’t ready to tell their family, or maybe they weren’t even ready to tell themselves. We’re in such different times — I feel like it would be a great opportunity for an actor who’s trans to play that role.”

This year’s Best Actress Oscar race is perhaps the biggest head-scratcher of all of the main categories, becoming a make-or-break race for the fourth straight year.
It all began when Lily Gladstone surprised pundits with her move up to the lead category for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” then was halted by Emma Stone for “Poor Things” at the Critics Choice Awards (after both won Golden Globes in their respective categories). Stone continued to succeed at the BAFTA Awards after Gladstone was shockingly snubbed. And it seemed that she was on a roll to victory to her second Oscar, only to be stopped in her tracks at the SAG Awards by, you guessed it, Gladstone. This push and pull between the two actresses has created back-and-forth mania over who will ultimately win out, and even though Gladstone has overtaken the lead currently in the combined Gold Derby odds at...

In Hollywood, things aren’t always what they seem. Alan Ritchson, from DC’s Titans, felt a bit overshadowed by Hilary Swank, a two-time Oscar winner, during the Ordinary Angels shoot. Even with his experience, the 41-year-old picked up on the vibe that folks thought he was a newbie.

Hilary Swank is looking back at the time when she helped rescue beloved pets amid the aftermath of 9/11.
The Oscar-winning actress, who has been open about her love of animals, recently recalled that she volunteered with the Aspca during the 2001 tragedy.
“People would go over to the piers over on West Street, and they would say, ‘My dog Simpson, or my goldfish or my rabbit,’ or whatever it is, and they’d say, ‘This is my address, this is my apartment,’ and I’d get these cards and we’d go down,” Swank said during an appearance on SiriusXM’s Literally! With Rob Lowe podcast.
The Million Dollar Baby star told Lowe that while there were many challenges and obstacles, including no working elevators, no technology and building stability risks, that didn’t stop them from saving these animals.

The number of actors the Netflix TV series Cobra Kai has brought back to reprise their characters from the Karate Kid films has been very impressive. Not only do you have Ralph Macchio and William Zabka back as Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence, but there’s also Martin Kove and Thomas Ian Griffith as villains John Kreese and Terry Silver, Yuji Okumoto and Sean Kanan as villains-turned-allies Chozen Toguchi and Mike Barnes; Ron Thomas, Rob Garrison, and Tony O’Dell as Johnny’s former Cobra Kai buddies; and appearances by Elisabeth Shue as Ali Mills, Tamlyn Tomita as Kumiko, and Robyn Lively as Jessica Andrews. They even brought Traci Toguchi back as Yuna, the “Girl Bell Ringer” she played in The Karate Kid Part II. But one actor who might not be returning from the films is Hilary Swank, who played Julie Pierce in the 1994 film The Next Karate Kid.

For the fourth consecutive year, we’ve got a firecracker of a Best Actress Oscar race. Lily Gladstone took home the Screen Actors Guild Award on Saturday for “Killers of the Flower Moon” over Emma Stone, who had been on a roll since the two won their respective Golden Globes, having pocketed the Critics Choice and BAFTA Awards for “Poor Things.” Now they each have an industry prize and Best Actress feels like a coin-flip. Gladstone has closed the gap on Stone in the Oscar odds since Saturday. Don’t be surprised if she overtakes the top spot soon. But when the SAG Awards and BAFTAs don’t align in Best Actress, which one has the edge at the Oscars?
Since BAFTA became an Oscar precursor 23 years ago, the Brits and the actors guilds have disagreed 13 times in the category prior to the Battle of the Stones. But not all splits are created equally.

Ordinary Angels. Photo Credit: Allen Fraser Ordinary Angels is the latest film to feature Hilary Swank playing a real-life character, and it’s directed by Jon Gunn, who’s made a name for himself both writing and directing films that tell real-life stories. He’s written American Underdog, the film about former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner; I Still Believe, a film based on the life of Christian singer Jeremy Camp; and Jesus Revolution, based on a true story, while the last movie he directed, The Case for Christ, was also based on a true story. According to Swank, Gunn was the perfect choice for a movie like Ordinary Angels, and she really appreciated his approach to filmmaking. As the news gets darker and more depressing, a triumphant “against the odds” inspired by true events underdog story may be just the cure for the late Winter doldrums. And that’s exactly what this week’s new movie promises…and pretty much delivers. It’s an ode to the “help your neighbor” spirit of small-town America (not that it’s completely absent in the bustling cities). Plus there’s a bit of spirituality (right in the title) along with some folks overcoming their own personal struggles. And as a bonus, this marks a most welcome return of an actress to the big screen, in a wide release, after earning a second Oscar almost twenty years ago. In a new “real-life” role this extraordinary actress becomes the leader of a group of Ordinary Angels.

With a true story centered on everyday people pulling off extraordinary feats, “Ordinary Angels” can’t help but embrace the sentimentality at its core. It’s baked into its DNA, and is the reason why this compelling, heartstring-pulling drama made it to the big screen 30 years after taking place — in a time when we too are searching for light in a bleak world. Yet what lifts the picture beyond average inspirational fluff is the way director Jon Gunn and company control the slow release of its sweetness so as not to overpower. This technique, though forgivably manipulative, works to grand effect and, by the end, even cynics will be won over by the human kindness on display.

Annette Bening is an actor’s actor. Like many of the greats before her, she began her career in the theatre. Through the 80s, she quietly compiled a library of rich, complex characters before making her Tony-nominated broadway debut in 1987’s “Coastal Disturbances.”
Bening then made her well deserved transition over to Hollywood with John Hughes’ “The Great Outdoors.” The film didn’t perform as well as hoped, nor did Milos Forman’s “Valmont” which was released the following year, but they both paved the way for Bening’s eventual Oscar-nominated breakout as Myra Langtry in Stephen Frears’ “The Grifters.”
She got particularly close to Oscar gold with “American Beauty” in 2000. Annette bagged the BAFTA and SAG award for her iconic portrayal of the colourfully volatile wife-in-crisis, Carolyn Burnham. She lost to Hilary Swank (“Boys Don’t Cry”) though, who had edged her out at the Globes.

Emma Stone won the Best Actress Oscar in 2017 for her role as an actress trying to make it big in Damien Chazelle‘s “La La Land.” Stone has also earned two Best Supporting Actress bids, the first in 2015 for “Birdman” and the second for “The Favourite” in 2019. She reteams with the latter’s director, Yorgos Lanthimos, for Searchlight Pictures’ “Poor Things.” The film, which is out in US theaters on Dec. 8, follows Stone as Bella Baxter — a woman brought back to life by a scientist (Willem Dafoe) and subsequently goes on a journey of self-discovery, meeting a variety of people along the way including a lawyer (Mark Ruffalo) and a potential suitor (Ramy Youssef).

The married filmmakers Jimmy Chin and Chai Vasarhelyi made their names with docs about extreme athletic accomplishments — see 2015’s Meru, 2018’s Free Solo (for which they won the best documentary feature Oscar) and 2021’s The Rescue — and have now made their narrative directorial debut, Nyad, about one woman’s decades-long pursuit of one of the greatest of all: becoming the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without the benefit of a moving cage to keep away sharks, jellyfish and other dangerous sea creatures.
As with, say, Argo, Sully or, well, The Rescue, I suspect that most people will know, going in to Nyad, how it ends. Spoiler alert: Nyad realized her dream, some 35 years after she first tried to, at the age of 64. But I suspect that most will not know, going in, just how many personal and professional obstacles Nyad had to overcome in order to do so.

As of this writing, based on the combined Oscar predictions of Gold Derby users, Fantasia Barrino is the front-runner to win Best Actress with 9/2 odds for playing Celie in “The Color Purple.” Currently in seventh place with 11/1 odds is Annette Bening for “Nyad.” Bening is long overdue for her first win. So could this be similar to 1985 when another overdue veteran beat an actress playing Celie in “The Color Purple?”
In “The Color Purple,” Barrino plays Celie Harris Johnson, an African-American woman struggling to live in the South during the early 1900s. In “Nyad,” Bening plays Diana Nyad, a real-life swimmer who, at age 60 and with the help of her best friend and coach (Jodie Foster), commits to achieving her life-long dream: a 110-mile open ocean swim from Cuba to Florida.

MGM’s raunchy high school comedy Bottoms by Emma Seligman, a surprising teen girl version of Fight Club, is punching into a lot more theaters this week, expanding from 10 to 715 nationwide. The numbers so far look solid and MGM might be hoping for anything in the $2.5 million-plus range over the three days.

Hillary Swank rallies her entire town to help out a neighbor in the latest trailer for Lionsgate’s true-life faith-based drama “Ordinary Angels.”
The two-time Oscar winner plays a hairdresser who inserts herself into the life of a grieving widower with a critically ill daughter. The kid needs a new liver, and the dad just needs a little help. As revealed in the trailer, circumstances change when a new organ becomes available for transplant, but it requires a cross-country flight and happens to occur during a once-in-a-generation cold front.
Swank won two Best Actress Oscars, one in 2000 for “Boys Don’t Cry” and one in 2005 for “Million Dollar Baby.” Although she never really became a bankable draw, she has made a career out of mostly top-billed leading roles in films like “Amelia,” “The Core” and “The Gift.” Moreover, she almost never found herself just playing the love interest or the lone woman in a macho melodrama,...

The episode of Revisited covering Buffy the Vampire Slayer was Written, Edited, and Narrated by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
With the recent passing of Paul Reubens, it got me thinking about the first role I ever saw him in, funny enough, without even knowing it was him until years later. It’s the one as a long-hired rocker with a penchant for blood. It’s a fun supporting role, acting alongside the legend that is Rutger Hauer. So, today I’d like to revisit a goofy, light-hearted, and charming vampire flick – from the early 90s. So raise your glass and raise it high. Today we talk about Buffy the Vampire Slayer (watch it Here).
First things first, I understand the show is the most accurate, and Buffy‘s true form is considered the television format, so I don’t...

ABC has canceled Hilary Swank-led drama series Alaska Daily after one season. The news is not surprising as the freshman series was not able to establish itself and find a sizable following.
From Tom McCarthy, the series follows fiercely talented and award-winning investigative journalist Eileen Fitzgerald (Swank) who leaves her high-profile New York life behind after a fall from grace to join a daily metro newspaper in Anchorage on a journey to find both personal and professional redemption.
As a reporter for a local metro newspaper, Eileen is investigating a cold case stacked with missing indigenous women with scarce details in desperate need of fresh eyes. The dark spaces where she has to investigate reveal the city’s seedy underbelly that could prove to be dangerous for Eileen as she begins to uncover secrets many would rather stay buried.

Actor Hilary Swank was widely recognized for her award-winning performance in Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby. But while filming she once experienced an illness that almost became more severe than she initially realized.
How Hilary Swank had a death scare while filming ‘Million Dollar Baby’ Hilary Swank | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Million Dollar Baby remains one of actor Hilary Swank’s most coveted roles. It won Swanks her second Academy Award, having previous won one for the film Boys Don’t Cry. But Million Dollar Baby wasn’t her easiest film to get into, as the feature saw Swank pushing herself to her limits both mentally and physically. This was necessary since Swank was playing a boxer in the movie, and needed to adjust her body to the film’s demands.
But although that type of training could be hard on the body, Swank found herself experiencing the wrong kind of pain.

Scottish actor Gerard Butler has been headlining some of Hollywood's biggest, most successful, and most talked-about blockbuster releases for three decades. If any 2000s action star has a claim to A-list status, it's him. However, it still feels like not enough people discuss his acting talents.
For most of his career, Butler has prioritized a kind of unapologetically corny and popular cinema that often skews ... controversial, to say the least. Good and campy fun is Butler's bread-and-butter -- whether it's action, romance, adventure, or a musical. The key to appreciating him as a performer is to understand this fact and fall in love with the easy-watching pleasure these movies provide. However, it's also worth noting what deeper dimensions Butler brings to these roles, too. So here's an appraisal of the 12 best Gerard Butler movies. For the unacquainted, these picks will help viewers fall in love with the man's unique brand of crowd-pleasing entertainment.

Marie Antoinette’s reign at PBS begins on March 19. The public broadcaster’s new series about the infamous French queen stars Emilia Schüle as the young Austrian archduchess who is married off to Louis, the dauphin of France (Louis Cunningham). It’s just the latest on-screen depiction of the legendary royal. Here are five movies about Marie Antoinette to watch before you binge the new show.

Gina Rodriguez says the “Not Dead Yet” team went above and beyond to help her hide her pregnancy.
The actress’ new comedy series debuts this year in February, but the road to release was bumpy as her pregnancy and filming for the show began at the same time.
“It’s my first time experiencing this, and they’ve been so loving and supportive of me, you know, accidentally getting pregnant right before the show started,” she said of her crew at a panel at the Television Critics Association Press Tour, via People. “Me and my husband are obviously very excited about it, but it definitely wasn’t planned.”

Fashion trends at the 2023 Golden Globes ranged from all shades of pink to a profusion of sleek black gowns and a decidedly minimalist approach to jewelry. But if one accessory ruled the night, it was the baby bump.
A quintet of Hollywood women who are expecting made high-profile appearances on the gray carpet at the Beverly Hilton, each proving that pregnancy doesn’t automatically mean a woman must abandon her personal aesthetic. Haute couture and other custom gowns were the style of choice among this enceinte group, who often chose romantic, flowing looks or sophisticated designs imbued with ultra-feminine details. And while comfort was understandably key, there’s no denying each woman was a bona fide rock star, walking the carpet and sitting through a telecast that ran three-plus hours.
