USC Annenberg and San Diego State University have both released end-of-year diversity reports looking at behind the scenes representation of 2022’s biggest movies. And the results found that Hollywood severely backslid over the past year.
Both studies — USC Annenberg Inclusion Initative’s “Inclusion in the Director’s Chair” report and the San Diego State Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film’s “Celluloid Ceiling” report — looked at the number of women who directed the top 100 films of the year. This year, just 10 women — Olivia Newman (“Where the Crawdads Sing”), Gina Prince-Bythewood (“The Woman King”), Olivia Wilde (“Don’t Worry Darling”), Jessica M. Thompson (“The Invitation”), Kat Coiro (“Marry Me”), Rosalind Ross (“Father Stu”), Halina Reijn (“Bodies Bodies Bodies”), Kasi Lemmons (“Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody”), Chinonye Chukwu (“Till”) and Maria Schrader (“She Said”) — helmed one of the top 100 highest grossing film’s at the domestic box office this year,...

As 2023 dawns, two major academic organizations that measure the progress of inclusion in Hollywood are looking back at the track record for 2022 in film.
The USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative’s latest “Inclusion in the Director’s Chair” report analyzes the gender and race/ethnicity of the directors behind last year’s 100 highest-grossing movies in the U.S., while the San Diego State Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film’s most recent “Celluloid Ceiling” report examined the employment of women in key behind-the-scenes roles in both the 100 and 250 top-grossing movies at the domestic box office.
In the one category shared by both studies — percentage of women directors among top 100 films – the schools came up with slightly different counts (possibly because of the criteria each group uses to compile its Box Office Mojo sampling). Sdsu reported that 11 percent of 2022’s helmers...

I was talking to another movie buff the other night when the subject of Mark Wahlberg came up. "What," he said, "you mean Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch?" It wasn't the first time I've heard people make snarky comments about Wahlberg's hip hop career before he got into acting, which got me thinking: Why just him? When the name Charlize Theron enters the discussion, no one says, "What, you mean the former winner of the Rooi Rose modeling competition in South Africa?" or makes a wisecrack about Hugh Jackman's previous job as a children's entertainer called Coco the Clown.
I think it's because people are, for whatever reason, still dubious about the talents of a guy who first tasted stardom rapping badly while frequently appearing shirtless with a baseball cap, and that was before using his buff physique to sell underpants. This is weird because he has done...

The ninth annual Miami Film Festival Gems will present Iranian filimmaker Jafar Panahi with the Precious Gem Award. The award will be presented virtually before Friday’s screening of “No Bears.”
The festival, sponsored by Miami Dade College, runs Nov. 3-10 at Mdc’s Tower Theater.
“I thank all the people involved in the Miami Film Festival, who considered me worthy of receiving this award.” Panahi stated in an audio message relayed from prison. ”But… I have dreams that go beyond all the awards in the world. I dream and have always dreamed that in the current situation my country is facing, I could be with my people and portray their struggle for freedom. I also wish that I could make films instead of receiving awards, because a filmmaker lives to make films. Anyway, I hope a day will come when I can make a film, and attend your festival with it.

Mark Wahlberg’s Father Stu is heading back to theaters next month, and this time, it will be without all those naughty words. The original cut of Father Stu was released back in April with an R-rating for “language throughout,” but Sony Pictures will re-release the movie on December 9th with a PG-13 edit.
Boasting a new title — Father Stu: Reborn — the recut movie is now rated PG-13 for “language, an accident scene, sexual references, some violence and smoking.” Based on a true story, Father Stu follows the life of Stuart Long, a boxer-turned-priest who inspired countless people during his journey from self-destruction to redemption. Written and directed by Rosalind Ross, Father Stu starred Mark Wahlberg as the title character, along with Mel Gibson, Jacki Weaver, and Teresa Ruiz.

Whether it’s a way to give a small movie a second chance in theaters or an opportunity to capitalize on a particularly quiet time at the box office, Sony is offering a surprise re-release to the Mark Wahlberg film “Father Stu” this December, where it will now open re-cut as a PG-13 version.
The new film is called “Father Stu: Reborn.” While the original film — released this April ahead of the Easter holiday — was dinged with an R-rating for “language throughout,” the new cut still features “language, an accident scene, sexual references, some violence and smoking.” A perfect evening for the whole family.
“Father Stu: Reborn” will open in theaters December 9, and it’s a choice time for Sony to take a chance on wringing a few extra dollars out of the story, as there are no other major studio releases debuting that weekend. It will open opposite Sam...

Sony is bringing a PG-13 version of “Father Stu” titled “Father Stu: Reborn” back to life – and theaters – on Dec. 9.
The Columbia Pictures and Mark Wahlberg religious drama was originally rated R by the MPAA for “language throughout.” According to a spokesperson for Sony, “Reborn” will qualify for a PG-13 rating based on its toned-down language as well as the omission of an accident scene, sexual references, some violence and smoking.
The recut version will not feature any reshot or additional material.
Based on a true story, “Father Stu” revolves around amateur boxer Stuart Long (Wahlberg) who moves to Los Angeles when an injury cuts short his fledgling career. After he begins attending church in hopes of courting a Sunday school teacher, Stu has an epiphany that he is destined to become a Catholic priest.
The film was written and directed by Rosalind Ross and co-stars Mel Gibson, Jacki Weaver and Teresa Ruiz.

Sony has moved Love Again, the romantic comedy starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Sam Heughan and Celine Dion, to May 12, 2023. It previously had a released date of February 10.
Logline for the Jim Strouse-directed movie: What if a random text message led to the love of your life? Mira Ray, dealing with the loss of her fiancé, sends a series of romantic texts to his old cell phone number…not realizing the number was reassigned to Rob Burns’ new work phone. A journalist, Rob is captivated by the honesty in the beautifully confessional texts. When he’s assigned to write a profile of megastar Celine Dion (playing herself in her first film role), he enlists her help in figuring out how to meet Mira in person…and win her heart.
Dion also has several songs in the film.

Photo: ‘Father Stu’ To follow this Easter weekend, Mark Wahlberg stars in ‘Father Stu’ as a turned priest who explores faith and redemption in the midst of hardship. In a story about the holy doctrine and the conversion into religion, the movie understands its own bias of faith while attempting to appeal to a general audience. Written and directed by Rosalind Ross and produced by Wahlberg himself, the story emphasizes character development while having lighthearted aspects throughout the movie. The premise of the film is based on faith which may only appeal to those interested in themes of spiritual absolution. It succeeds in all aspects of a man trying to find God but it also misses the potential depth and complexities that follow human connection through religion. The film overall is simple and sometimes predictable, it definitely follows the consistent theme found in previous roles Wahlberg has played where the disgruntled man turns good.

“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” the third chapter in the “Harry Potter” spinoff series, collected a muted 43 million in its domestic box office debut.
In pandemic times, those ticket sales were enough to lead this weekend’s box office charts and land one of the biggest North American openings in 2022. But it’s also a sign that magic is in short supply for J.K. Rowling’s lucrative and ever-expanding Wizarding World. Dinged by mixed reviews and growing apathy for prequel series star Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and company, “The Secrets of Dumbledore” stands as the worst start for a “Harry Potter”-adjacent movie.
The diminishing enthusiasm for “Fantastic Beasts” is problematic because witchcraft and wizardry does not come cheap. Warner Bros. shelled out 200 million to produce “The Secrets of Dumbledore,” and the studio spent tens of millions more to promote the film to audiences across the globe. Like the franchise’s earlier entries,...

“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” the latest film in the Wizarding World universe and the third movie as part of the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise, brought in 6 million in its Thursday box office previews from over 3,350 screens.
While “Fantastic Beasts” looked to be a once promising franchise when it launched in 2016, the third film, “The Secrets of Dumbledore,” has been dogged by off screen controversy and is following up some tepid reviews for the previous film “The Crimes of Grindelwald.” And while independent trackers say that “Secrets of Dumbledore” could climb to between 47-50 million this weekend, that would be below the prior installment.
For comparison, “Crimes of Grindelwald” opened in November 2018 and made 9.1 million in Thursday box office previews and then opened to 62 million. It went on to a theatrical run of 154.5 million domestic and 654.8 million worldwide. The first film, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” from 2016, likewise...

Warner Bros, which has traditionally ruled the Easter weekend box office, is back, a year after Godzilla vs. Kong brought bread to reopening cinemas during the pandemic. The stateside arrival of J.K. The Harry Potter franchise spinoff has always demonstrated its potency more so abroad than stateside, so look for the magic there. An pack of intrepid wizards will duel against a tiny blue speed demon to lead domestic box office charts.
The odds-on favorite “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” the third entry in the “Harry Potter” spinoff series, is expected to debut to at least 40 million from 4,200 North American theaters. Those ticket sales should be enough to surpass the competition — unless last weekend’s champion “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” powers to another strong turnout at the movies. Paramount’s kid friendly sequel opened last weekend to huge 72 million and could add 30 million to 40 million in its second outing.
Elsewhere, Sony Pictures is getting an early start by bringing “Father Stu,” an R-rated faith based drama starring Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson, to theaters on Wednesday. The movie is projected to earn 7 million from 2,705 cinemas in its first five days of release.

While the new film Father Stu may initially come across as a simple bad guy breaks good by becoming a priest and righting his past wrongs, it also manages to tell an earnest and emotionally rewarding story. What could have been a pandering, emotion-laden tale of one individual finding his “divine” purpose in life, instead proves to be a heart-felt and well-executed story of personal discovery and salvation.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review on “Father Stu,” featuring Mark Wahlberg traveling down an unusual life path, portraying a character journey from unsuccessful boxer and actor to the priesthood. In theaters on Wednesday, April 13th, just in time for redemption on Easter weekend.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Wahlberg takes on one of his more challenging roles as Stuart Long, a ne’er do well who tries boxing and acting, which perplexes his Mother (Jackie Weaver) and is ignored by his angry Dad (Mel Gibson). While schlepping in Hollywood, he comes across a comely young lady (Teresa Ruiz) through her Catholic Church – and tries to woo her – but unexpectedly then feels a calling to be a priest. His most unlikely journey, which include physical problems, is next up in his life as Father Stu.

‘Father Stu’ Review: Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson Form an Unholy Alliance in Sloppy Religious Biopic
A faith-based drama co-starring Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson that was written and directed by Gibson’s 31-year-old girlfriend, Rosalind Ross (whose only previous credits are a short film that she co-wrote in 2014 and a guest appearance on one of Laura Ingraham’s demonic talk shows), “Father Stu” doesn’t sound like a movie so much as it does a biblical exercise in faith and forgiveness. Alas, watching this messy-as-hell biopic about a foul-mouthed boxer priest requires a Christ-like amount of both, and inspires precious little of either in return.
Of course, as an agnostic Jew who wouldn’t go within 10 feet of Gibson unless I was wearing one of those padded bomb suits from “The Hurt Locker,” I’m not exactly the target audience for a movie that aspires to feel like a “Passion of the Christ” remake directed by David O. Russell. But as a critic who’s...

Stuart Long (Mark Wahlberg) in Columbia Pictures’ Father Stu.
Now here’s a new studio film release that seems a perfect fit for this time of year. After a bone-chilling winter, spring has finally, though rather slowly, arrived. For many folks, and nature-enthusiasts, it’s a time of rebirth and renewal. In the latter category, and in the wake of the big “health events”, lots of folks are considering a “do-over” or even a “fresh start”, mainly switching their line of work and professions. This aforementioned new flick has one of the most startling, and radical, “reboots” of one person’s life. A real-life, as this is based on a real person. Oh, and with Easter a few days away, the story will certainly resonate with its focus on faith. That’s because this tale is about Stuart Long, a boxer who becomes the priest known and loved as Father Stu.

In between tentpole movies, actor Mark Wahlberg has consistently found the time to venture into dramatic territory, specifically hyper-masculine narratives that allow him to play tough guys. (“The Departed” and “The Fighter” represent the best of these efforts.)
While his ideological leanings have never been a secret, Wahlberg’s latest serious role in “Father Stu,” from first-time writer-director Rosalind Ross, may be his most explicitly conservative escapade yet.
Wahlberg takes on the role of Stuart Long, a real-life amateur boxer who became a Catholic priest against all odds. Directionless since childhood, when the death of his younger brother devastated his family, Stuart leaves pugilism behind for the sudden dream of becoming an actor in Los Angeles. It’s there that a love interest, a Mexican woman named Carmen, leads him to a long-winded transformation via the Church.

The ad campaign for “Father Stu” — before-and-after photos with Mark Wahlberg looking sleazy in a mug shot, then as a clean-cut clergyman glancing up at the heavens — makes you think it’s going to be a movie about the world’s toughest priest. It is, but not in the way you expect. “Father Stu” is based on the true story of Stuart Long, who started out as an amateur boxer, and Wahlberg plays him as an innocent ruffian in shaggy hair and a handlebar mustache who’s grinding away at being a fighter because he doesn’t know what else to do. By the time the film starts, in the ’90s, he is already over the hill: a former Montana Golden Gloves heavyweight champ who can’t find a sponsor, and who walks away from each bout with lingering infections. So he decides, on a whim, to go to L.

Dropping during Semana Santa, Mark Wahlberg's latest film, "Father Stu," tells the true story of an amateur boxer turned priest whose introduction to Catholicism comes via his Latina love interest, Carmen. Father Stu star Mark Wahlberg wants to be a part of more uplifting content.
While speaking with Entertainment Tonight, he spoke about his journey filming and how the inspirational message behind the film, is opening up a new door in his career and transitioning out of the Hollywood spotlight.
“I feel like this is starting a new chapter for me in that, now, doing things like this [with] real substance can help people. I definitely want to focus on making more. I wouldn’t say necessarily just faith-based content but things that will help people. Hopefully this movie will open a door for not only myself but for lots of other people in Hollywood to make more meaningful content.”
Maybe Wahlberg is looking to make films that are seen as inspirational (like Father Stu), opposed to his more violent action cinema like Infinite, and Mile 22, or escapist films like Uncharted.

The controversial stars have teamed up for a film made by Gibson’s girlfriend Rosalind Ross about the power of redemption
Like it or not, Mel Gibson’s professional rehabilitation is gaining momentum. Ever since his career exploded in a mess of drunkenness, antisemitism, domestic abuse and a string of genuinely horrifying voicemails, Gib has slowly set about clawing himself out from the hole he dug for himself. It started small, with bit parts in sequels like Machete 2, The Expendables 3 and Daddy’s Home 2. It picked up speed with his Oscar-nominated film Hacksaw Ridge, and then hit a pothole with Fatman, where he played a grizzled and embittered Santa Claus. And now it seems unstoppable.
Gibson’s upcoming projects include a CIA thriller in which he stars alongside Jason Isaacs, a John Wick spin-off series and a Lethal Weapon sequel that he also plans to direct. But before all that comes Father Stu.

Mark Wahlberg chowed down 11,000 calories a day for two straight weeks to transform from a boxer to a priest in the true story of Father Stuart Long in “Stu,” the actor revealed on “The Tonight Show.” And for the two weeks before that, he had 7,000 calories a day — a task that the actor said “was fun for about an hour.”
“It’s such a hard, physical thing to do,” Wahlberg said about his weight gain. “Losing weight, you just kind of tough it out, you just don’t eat, and exercise. And this, even when you’re full, I would wake up after a meal and have another meal. I was eating every three hours. It was not fun.”
The faith-based drama documents the journey Father Stuart Long (affectionately known as Father Stu), who was a college football player turned boxer and Montana Golden Gloves champion to actor to museum manager to priest.

Mark Wahlberg revealed on “The Tonight Show” this week that his transformation diet for the new faith-based drama “Stu” resulted in eating 11,000 calories a day for two weeks, up from the 7,000 calories he was consuming each day for two previous weeks. “Stu” marks the feature directorial debut of Rosalind Ross, who also penned the script. The film is based on the true story of Rev. Stuart Long, who was a boxer before becoming a priest.
“Unfortunately, I had to consume, for two weeks, 7,000 calories, and then for another two weeks, 11,000 calories. And it was fun for about an hour,” Wahlberg said. “It’s such a hard, physical thing to do. Losing weight, you just kind of tough it out, you just don’t eat, and exercise. Wahlberg will produce along with his producing partner and manager Stephen Levinson along with Jordan Foss. Miky Lee and Colleen Camp will exec produce.
Not much is known about the plot other then it is a faith-based film loosely based on a true story and is something very close to Wahlberg’s heart and something he had been developing for a number of years. As someone whose schedule is usually filled years out, when an opening occurred at the top of the year, Wahlberg saw this as the perfect opportunity to finally move forward with the film.
Best known for her critically acclaimed work in Animal Kingdom and Silver Linings Playbook, Weaver just wrapped a large recurring arc in Taylor Sheridan’s hit show, Yellowstone.

The producer behind Mel Gibson’s incredible WWII film Hacksaw Ridge, David Permut, is now developing a film based on Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, who is the only woman ever to have received the Congressional Medal of Honor.
The project follows Walker’s journey during the Civil War “as she struggled to be accepted and compensated in the same manner as her male counterparts in the medical field and ultimately became the first and only female recipient to receive the Congressional Medal Of Honor. Even after receiving her medical degree at Syracuse Medical College in NY, Dr. Walker was considered unfit for the Union Army Examining Board and initially was only allowed to serve voluntarily as a surgeon. While serving in the war, Dr. Walker was captured by Confederate soldiers after boldly crossing enemy lines to treat wounded civilians and was arrested as a spy – eventually being released in a prisoner exchange.

The selection of the hot titles can be fluid until the first Friday, when packages either fall together or fall by the wayside when elements drop out, or just don’t coalesce quickly enough. The latter happened on Destroyer, the WWII drama that Mel Gibson will direct from a Rosalind Ross script, with Mark Wahlberg to play Becton, the captain of the USS Laffey who skippered one destroyer sunk by Japanese Kamikaze planes during World War II, and is hellbent on not seeing it happen again. The film got a very important tax break to shoot in Australia, and has strong interest from Warner Bros for a world rights deal and Lionsgate for domestic. The film likely will be Gibson’s next directing project – the visceral war chaos he brought to Braveheart, Apocalypto and Hacksaw Ridge shows how well tailored he is to Ross’s script, but no Cannes do at this market.

Mel Gibson is eyeing his “Daddy’s Home 2” co-star Mark Wahlberg for a key role in his next directing project, the WWII drama “Destroyer,” TheWrap has learned.
Meanwhile, Gibson is circling a role opposite Wahlberg in Warner Bros.’ remake of the ’70s TV series “The Six Billion Dollar Man” — which is targeting a summer production start ahead of a release next summer and ahead of the “Destroyer” shoot.
Reps for Warner Bros., Gibson and Wahlberg declined to comment.
It’s not clear what role Wahlberg might play in “Destroyer,” which is based on the John Wukovits book “Hell From the Heavens: The Epic Story of the USS Laffey and World War II’s Greatest Kamikaze Attack.”

The indie, which is targeting a fall production start, centers on the Battle of Okinawa in April, 1945 when the USS Laffey withstood 22 kamikaze attacks and earned the nickname “The Ship That Would Not Die.”
Gibson’s longtime girlfriend Rosalind Ross wrote the script. Gianni Nunnari’s Hollywood Gang Productions is producing “Destroyer,” which is not set up at any studio.
“The Six Billion Dollar Man” is set to go into production this summer for release on May 31, 2019. The movie is based on TV show that made Lee Majors a star as well as the novel “Cyborg” by Martin Caidin.

The story follows military officer Steve Austin (Wahlberg), who becomes part of a top-secret government program after a horrific accident leaves him near death. With the help of cutting-edge technology, Steve is brought back to life with extraordinary abilities, making him the world’s first truly bionic man.
If Gibson joins the cast, it would be the first onscreen pairing since last winter’s “Daddy Home 2” in which Gibson and Wahlberg played father and son.
Damián Szifron, who wrote and directed Argentina’s Oscar foreign-language nominee “Wild Tales,” wrote the “Six Billion” screenplay and will direct.
Gibson is repped by CAA and Hansen Jacobson. Wahlberg is repped by Wme.

Mel Gibson has found his next film project! He is set to direct another World War II film called Destroyer. Gibson most recently directed the WWII movie Hacksaw Ridge, which was an incredible film. I love that he's going to direct another war film and this next one sounds great!
Like Hacksaw Ridge, Destroyer also centers on the Battle of Okinawa. This one, however, is set in April 1945 and tells the epic story of the USS Laffey, which is a ship that withstood multiple kamikaze attacks and earned the nickname "The Ship That Would Not Die."
The movie will be based on the book by John Wukovits called "Hell From the Heavens: The Epic Story of the USS Laffey and World War II’s Greatest Kamikaze Attack." According to the report, Wukovitz used "personal interviews with survivors, the memoirs of crew members, and the sailors’ wartime correspondence to construct the story.

“Destroyer” is being produced at Gianni Nunnari’s Hollywood Gang Productions. It’s based on the John Wukovits book “Hell From the Heavens: The Epic Story of the USS Laffey and World War II’s Greatest Kamikaze Attack.”
Rosalind Ross wrote the script, which centers on the Battle of Okinawa in April, 1945, when the ship withstood multiple kamikaze attacks and earned the nickname “The Ship That Would Not Die.” Wukovitz used personal interviews with survivors, the memoirs of crew members, and the sailors’ wartime correspondence to construct the story.
“Hacksaw Ridge” also portrayed the events surrounding the Battle of Okinawa, centering on the role of medic Desmond Doss in rescuing dozens of Allied soldiers. Gibson received his third Oscar nomination for his work as director. He won Oscars...

After making a comeback with his Oscar-winning directorial effort Hacksaw Ridge last year, Mel Gibson is now stepping back in front of the camera for the new comedy, Daddy’s Home 2.
The film tells the story of a father and stepfather, played by Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, whose cozy relationship is put to the test when their fathers come to visit for Christmas. Gibson stars as Wahlberg’s old school, tough-guy dad, who is the exact opposite of Ferrel’s overly affectionate dad, played by John Lithgow.

Rosalind Ross will write the adaptation under the working title of Kamikaze.

After 80 minutes, 22 continuous air attacks and four direct bomb hits, six Japanese fighter planes crashed into the ship, setting the destroyer ablaze. Thirty-two men died and 71 were wounded that day.
The ship’s captain Frederick Julian Becton refused to give up and he and his crew fought on and ultimately won the day, earning the Laffey the name ‘The Ship That Would Not Die.’
Nunnari will produce alongside Hollywood Gang’s Shannon Gaulding.
