Attorney General Merrick Garland slammed Republican attacks against the Justice Department in a tense House Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday.
“I will not be intimidated,” Garland said in his opening statements. “The Justice Department will not be intimidated. We will continue to do our jobs free from political influence. And we will not back down from defending our democracy.”

Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update reacted to the planned presidential debates between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, as well as an especially viral exchange in the House of Representatives this week involving Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-ga).
For a preview of the CNN debate in late June and the second on ABC in September, co-anchor Colin Jost suggested that viewers “take a bottle of Ambien and Adderall at the same time.”
Jost also mocked each candidate for their social media posts agreeing to the debate, as Biden addressed Trump with “Make my day,...

Missed Thursday’s late-night monologues? We’ve got you covered with our round-up of the night’s best laughs from across the dial.
They’re Not Booing, They’re Saying “Boo-bert”
Late night hosts, pesky hunters of hypocrisy that they are, were all over the parade of supposed “family values” Republicans flocking to Donald Trump’s trial concerning that time he committed financial fraud to cover up hush money payments to the adult film actress he slept with while his third wife recovered from childbirth. Noting how virulent anti-porn moral scolds like House Speaker Mike Johnson and Congressman Jd Vance have come rushing to give moral support to their chosen leader in his hour of humiliating need, said hosts roasted the GOP for so openly demonstrating that their only actual value is power.

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker kicked the hornet’s nest last weekend when he encouraged the women of Benedictine College’s 2024 graduate class to embrace their roles as wives and homemakers rather than putting their degrees to use. While the speech drew widespread criticism for his characterization of women and LGBTQ+ people, Butker also promoted an insidious piece of antisemitic misinformation pertaining to legislation in Congress.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he is backing the former naval pilot Aaron Dimmock as a primary opponent against his nemesis, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida).
Gaetz is one of the eight Republicans responsible for his being ousted as House speaker.
“Gaetz is the Hunter Biden of the Republican Party,” the ex-House Speaker stated during an interview with Politico. “He’s got an opponent who is pro-life, pro-Second Amendment, trained at Pensacola, went to the Naval Academy and flew jets to defend us while Gaetz was getting kicked out of high school, buying coke and paying minors for sex.”
McCarthy was speaking about the House Ethics Committee investigation, which began in 2021, over allegation the Florida representative had breached sex trafficking laws and had relations with a 17-year-old girl.
Gaetz replied to McCarthy’s support of the ex-naval aviator on the platform X.

Marjorie Taylor Greene forced a vote to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday evening, a move her colleagues in Congress quickly voted to kill.
The House voted 359-43 to table the motion, with 193 Republicans siding with 163 Democrats in striking it down.
Greene has been teasing that she will force a vote to oust Johnson despite garnering virtually no support for the move, and former President Donald Trump reportedly telling her over the weekend to drop the stunt. She seemed ready to do so yesterday, but went ahead and forced the vote on Wednesday.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) blamed congressional Republicans for squandering their leverage to tackle the border crisis.
DeSantis stated that House Republicans “surrendered” their power to address the ongoing crisis happening at the U.S.-Mexico border after the chamber had passed a foreign aid package distributed billions of dollars to American allies.
The Florida governor accused the party of handing President Joe Biden the foreign aid funds he requested while gaining nothing in exchange for securing the border.
“They basically just surrendered on the border,” he told reporters. “They now have no leverage to do anything on the border. They had an opportunity to insist that Biden accept the border if he wanted all the foreign aid, and they decided to capitulate.”
“And so he got everything he wants, and Republicans voters did not get anything with respect to stopping this problem at the southern border. Look, we’re...

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy praised GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for being a “very serious legislator” despite her remarks about replacing House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Fox News host Brian Kilmeade noted in an interview with McCarthy that Greene is hoping to oust Johnson, much like Rep. Matt Gaetz deposed him on October 3, 2023.
“Now what she’s doing is much different than what Matt Gaetz is doing – did,” the former House speaker stated. “She didn’t make it privileged, so it’s not up for a vote.”
“And the one thing I’ve always found about Marjorie is she’s a very serious legislator that deals with policy,” he added.
“And the best way to deal with anyone like that is to sit down and talk to them,” he continued. “I don’t believe the speaker has spoken to Marjorie. I think if you sit down and discuss, you understand you have Congress,...

Gingrich attacked hard-right disrupters, calling them “narcissists” and “selfish idiots” while also praising the way Johnson handled an unmanageable caucus.
“[Johnson] has the narrowest majority in modern times, and it’s not a true majority because he’s got six or eight narcissists – people who think that they individually get to screw up everything,” the former GOP speaker told Politico.
He also called out Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) during this interview.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California) stated that he was removed because Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) wanted to stop the ethics investigation over his alleged affair with a 17-year-old girl.
“And I’ll give you the truth why I’m not speaker,” McCarthy shared during a recent event at Georgetown University. “It’s because one person – a member of Congress – wanted me to stop an ethics complaint because he slept with a 17-year-old – an ethics complaint that started before I ever became speaker. And that’s illegal.”
“I’m not going to get in the middle,” he declared. “Did he do it or not? I don’t know.”
The former California representative was referring to a House Ethics Committee investigation that opened in 2021 regarding allegations that Gaetz violated sex trafficking laws and had relations with an underage girl.
This investigation was tabled to allow the Department of Justice to investigate.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is enacting a revenge plot against the eight House Republicans who ousted him.
In October 2023, McCarthy was booted from his position as House speaker when a group of Republicans joined all Democrats in voting to vacate the chair.
McCarthy is out for revenge against the group that he has dubbed the “Crazy Eight” or “Gaetz Eight” and its leader, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), who introduced the motion to have the speaker vacated.
The former House speaker left Congress two months later. This ended up shrinking his party’s majority in the chamber.
McCarthy’s ally, Brian Walsh, is working to round up primary challengers to the “Gaetz Eight.”
The ousted speaker is prepared to mobilize his still-sizable donor network to arrange primary challenges. He is focusing on three representatives specifically. His allies believe that Reps. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina), Bob Good (R-Virginia) and Eli Crane...

On Friday, controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) filed a motion to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Johnson has served as House Speaker since October 2023, when he took over for Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted on October 3, when eight House Republicans and all Democrats supported a motion by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) to remove him.
It was not instantly clear how the House would act on Greene’s motion, which requires only a majority vote to remove its Speaker.
She did not file the motion as a special bill – which would have a vote forced within two legislative days – but instead, as a regular motion, which could be referred to a committee, where it would likely be disregarded.
Greene said in a speech on the House floor that the GOP majority was “a failure.”
After filing the motion, Greene spoke to reporters.
“We were promised regular order,” she stated. “That...

Updated: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga) filed a motion Friday that could lead to a vote to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson, less than a half year into his tenure.
Greene’s action came just as the House passed a $1.2 trillion package to fund the government through September and forestall a shutdown. The bill only would have passed with Democratic votes, with a majority of Republicans against it.
“Ok, deep breath America, here we go again,” CNN anchor Dana Bash told viewers after Manu Raju and other reporters interviewed Greene on the steps of the Capitol afterward.
No vote on Greene’s motion to vacate is scheduled, as she did not seek a “privileged” resolution that would have triggered a two-legislative day timeframe for a floor vote. That is what happened in October, when Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-fl) led a successful effort to oust Kevin McCarthy as speaker. What...

About a half hour after Joe Biden finished up a give-em-hell type of State of the Union speech, he was still in the House chamber, shaking hands, taking selfies and chatting up other senators in candid moments that were caught on C-Span. The president lingered for so long that some photographers joked that soon the House chaplain may show up to give the next morning’s prayer.
Finally, House Speaker Mike Johnson, still on the rostrum, called an end to the proceedings, and the TV lights dimmed. Biden got the signal that it was time to go, but even then it took him a few more minutes to exit.
The speech and even Biden’s endurance in its aftermath should have provided some reassurance to Democrats fretting about Biden’s age and agility in recent months — as one prominent Hollywood backer put it to me the other day, the term is “freaking out.

On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that states could not remove Donald Trump from their ballots using the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause.
However, the Supreme Court justices were divided about how broadly this decision would end up sweeping. A five-to-four majority wrote that no state could exclude a federal candidate from any ballot – but four justices argued that the court should have kept its opinion limited.
A five-justice majority – Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh – wrote that states cannot remove any federal officer from the ballot, especially the president, unless Congress first passes legislation.
“We conclude that States may disqualify persons holding or attempting to hold state office. But States have no power under the Constitution to enforce Section 3 with respect to federal offices, especially the Presidency,” these justices said.

The Supreme Court heard arguments on Thursday pertaining to whether states can throw Donald Trump off the 2024 presidential ballots if they determine he violated the 14th Amendment — which essentially disqualifies insurrectionists from holding office. The former president shouldn’t be too worried, however, as the conservative-controlled court seems unlikely to permit what Chief Justice John Roberts described as a “pretty daunting consequence.”
The justices did not seem very concerned with the question of whether Trump is actually an insurrectionist, only addressing it briefly during the proceedings. Trump lawyer Jonathan Mitchell...

In a show of support for former President Donald Trump, Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) and Elise Stefanik (R-New York) unveiled a concise resolution on Tuesday, declaring that Trump “did not engage in insurrection or rebellion against the United States.”
The one-page resolution, which boasted over 60 co-sponsors from the GOP, emerges amidst efforts by various groups across the nation who seek to disqualify Trump from the 2024 presidential election ballots.
These groups argue that Trump’s involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack constituted an insurrection, invoking the language of the 14th Amendment, which disqualifies individuals who have engaged in such acts from holding office.
In December, the Colorado Supreme Court excluded Trump from the Republican Party ballot in the state. This decision will now be reviewed by the Supreme Court.

The vote comes weeks after the state GOP unanimously voted during an emergency meeting to strip Ziegler of his official duties and lowered his salary to $1. Days before, reports emerged that Ziegler had requested a multi-million dollar buyout in exchange for his resignation.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said that he will resign his congressional seat at the end of the year, bringing to an end an often tumultuous tenure in GOP leadership.
“I will continue to recruit our country’s best and brightest to run for elected office,” he wrote in a Wall Street Journal op ed that was published on Wednesday. “The Republican Party is expanding every day, and I am committed to lending my experience to support the next generation of leaders.”
McCarthy was ousted as House speaker in October, after just 10 months, amid bitter divisions with members on the far right. He faced a decision on his future this week, the deadline for filing for reelection for his Bakersfield area congressional seat.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said that he had an uneasy feeling about George Santos, facing an expulsion vote this week, before the 2022 election and even predicted to two Fox News anchors that “something is going to come out on this guy.”
In a Q&a at The New York Times’ DeadBook Summit, McCarthy said that he tried to get someone else to run in Santos’ New York district, but “he had already kind of locked down and you couldn’t beat him.” So as the House Republican leader, McCarthy did a fundraiser for him “and I’m doing it for everybody.”
“And I listened to him and I walked back and just say, ‘We shouldn’t fund this race. I don’t know what it is. But we shouldn’t fund this race.” He noted that the House GOP superPAC did not.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy called out his Republican colleagues responsible for his removal last month and called for “consequences.”
McCarthy was ousted on October 3, when eight house Republicans joined all Democrats to support a motion by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) to remove McCarthy from the Speaker’s role.
The vote made McCarthy the first speaker in U.S. history to lose the position through a floor vote. It took the GOP three weeks to unite around McCarthy’s replacement.
In an interview with CNN on Thursday, McCarthy labeled eight of his GOP critics “disruptors” and expressed surprise that Rep. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina) and Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tennessee) had joined Gaetz to remove him from his position. McCarthy stated that the Republican Party would benefit “tremendously” if Gaetz were no longer a member of the House.

Mike Johnson is the new Speaker of the House. The Louisiana Republican won the gavel on Wednesday, three chaos-filled weeks after the party ousted Kevin McCarthy from the position earlier this month. Republicans voted unanimously to make him second in line to the presidency.
Johnson, who was elected to the House in 2016, is serving just his fourth term in Congress and is the least experienced Speaker elected to the position since the 1870s. Three other candidates, Reps. Steve Scalise (R-La.), Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), and Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) failed to convert...

Update: Rep. Mike Johnson (R-la) won the vote for speaker, ending three-weeks of Republican intra-party divisions and bitter argument that paralyzed the House.
Johnson won 220 votes while Hakeem Jeffries drew 209 votes. The manual roll call was a contrast to previous ones, as Republicans were unified in their support of the Louisiana Republican, who is little known on the national stage. Yet late on Tuesday, he managed to win a GOP closed-door vote to win the nomination, with members quickly predicting that they would finally coalesce around a speaker candidate.
“The challenge is great, but the time for action is now, and I will not let you down,” Johnson told members after taking the gavel. He said that the first bill he will bring to the floor will be a resolution in support of Israel. He also said that he planned to create a bipartisan commission on the national debt, and...

Jimmy Fallon thinks he may have found a solution for the Republican Speaker of the House problem: the Amazon Alexa House Speaker. “The Tonight Show” host cut to a fake commercial for the product on Monday night.
The commercial advertised some of benefits of the robotic speaker, including its ability to vote on bills and heckle the President during the State of the Union by saying “Let’s go Brandon,” a nod to the Republican outburst that occurred in February. Much like Kevin McCarthy, the speaker also has the ability to lose its jobs after just a few weeks.
“It’s time to listen to the speaker that’s been listening to you since 2014,” the commercial’s announcer cheerily says. Watch the segment above.
On Monday, the Republican-led House of Representatives hit its 20th day of being locked as it continues to search for the new Speaker of the House.

Former House speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California) scolded Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) in a closed-door GOP conference meeting.

McCarthy reported that in the meeting, there was a moment when he mentioned Gaetz.
Gaetz stood up to interrupt him and say something. McCarthy then fired back at him, “Sit … down,” which prompted Gaetz to respond back.
Gaetz said that he thought McCarthy was “yielding to me since he had mentioned me.”

Update: Back to square one: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Oh) is out as the Republican nominee for Speaker of the House.
Jordan fell short in roll call votes this week, and lost even more ground in a third ballot Friday.
“We need to come together and figure out who are speaker is going to be,” Jordan told reporters today.
Members are leaving for the weekend. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-Nc), who is serving as speaker pro tem, said there will be a candidate forum Monday night and conference elections to select a nominee on Tuesday morning.
“We’ll have to go back to the drawing board,” said Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-ca), who was ousted as speaker earlier this month. “What history will look at, the crazy eights, led by [Matt] Gaetz, the amount of damage they have done to this party and this country, is insurmountable. … We are in a very bad position as a party.

Update, 11:57 a.m. Pt: The Republican leadership chaos continues, as a plan to designate a temporary speaker has been sidelined and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-oh) made plans for another floor vote.
Jordan, who has failed in two votes to become speaker, earlier today embraced a plan in which a resolution would be offered so that the current speaker pro tem, Patrick McHenry, would get additional powers through January. Jordan would have still been in the speaker race, but it would have given him more time to win over holdouts, which numbered 22 on Wednesday.
But in the closed door Republican conference meeting, there was a revolt among some members, particularly those on the far right, who viewed it as a coalition plan that would give additional power to Democrats.
After the temporary speaker plan was presented, “We decided that wasn’t where we were going to go,” Jordan told reporters.

Jimmy Fallon isn’t exactly impressed by Jim Jordan’s second loss for Speaker of the House. During the second round of voting, the Ohio representative lost by even more votes than in the first round.

Among the many big names at the premiere of the “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” concert film was none other than Beyoncé, prompting fans of both pop queens to go feral. With two huge stars in one place though, Jimmy Fallon has a suspicion that Adele was named the “designated survivor” of the night.
For those unfamiliar, “designated survivor” is a real duty in the United States. During any event where multiple major government officials will be in attendance, like a State of the Union or presidential inauguration, one person in the presidential line of succession does not attend, and instead stays at an undisclosed secure location. The concept was even turned into a TV series in 2016, starring Kiefer Sutherland.
“That’s right, Taylor and Beyonce were at the premiere, while Adele stayed in Vegas as the designated survivor,” Fallon joked. “We need to have someone safe at all times.

Stephen Colbert has a good idea of what went on during the “therapy session” that took place between roughly 150 lawmakers earlier this week.
The closed-doors meeting took place Monday, two days before the planned vote. Multiple GOP lawmakers described the meeting as “mostly civil, yet cathartic,” according to Politico. However, the meeting ended with House Republicans no closer to agreeing on who should replace Kevin McCarty as Speaker of the House after his recent ousting.

In her newly published book Enough, former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson claims Rudy Giuliani groped her during her time working for former President Donald Trump.
Hutchinson, 26, who delivered testimony to the congressional committee that investigated the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, claims that Giuliani groped her on the day of the riot.
In her book, Hutchinson described meeting with Giuliani backstage at a speech of Trump’s before a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol building in a protest against the results of the 2020 election.
