Update: Producer and Archivist Robert Harris has reached out to JoBlo to add his take on James Cameron’s 4K releases, saying, “These films have not been restored in any way, nor was restoration needed. There should be no problems with the original elements. The work performed was a re-visualization. An entirely new digital product, which (to varying degrees of success) appears to have achieved Mr. Cameron’s goals. If these were attempts at restoration, they would fail in all regards. All best, Robert Harris.”
Not long after reaching out to us, Harris sent a follow-up email with more comments:
Allow me to chime in again and possibly clarify. Very much akin to Titanic, these films seemingly were restricted during production based upon accessible technology – be it film stock, optics – whatever.
The original filmmaker, by virtue of newer technologies, has seen fit to update the way...

After many years of being unavailable, James Cameron’s True Lies is finally out as a title we can purchase. iTunes just released the 4K remastering for Digital Download, alongside two other James Cameron classics, The Abyss and Aliens. The 4K Blu-ray will be out in March, but the movie’s possibly AI-assisted restoration is already proving to be controversial. Our own Luke Ryan, who ran the long-running Movie Endings Explained series for us on JoBlo Originals, took to Twitter (or X) to post some disturbing screenshots from the film, which suggests the film looks far different now than it did back in 1994.
James Cameron has absolutely lost his fucking mind, allowing this to be done to his films. The True Lies 4K "remaster" is out and yeah, Peter Jackson's Park Row AI treatment has been Slathered all over it. I'll say it again, this digital painting Over Film is fucking disgusting.

The Star Wars Celebration is in hyperspeed, with news covering all corners of the galaxy, including the television front. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which was officially announced last year, was given a teaser today. And although the teaser has not been made available online (yet!), positive word of mouth and a panel have worked to build buzz even further.
According to executive producer Jon Favreau, Skeleton Crew took inspiration from the ‘80s favorites, particularly those produced by Steven Spielberg, something that should hype up fans of a key demographic even more:
Next up is #SkeletonCrew at #StarWarsCelebration – as Filioni says, it’s about a group of kids going in a dangerous adventure. Favreau says Amblin’ films and The Goonies were inspirations.

Here at JoBlo, we’re gearing up for James Bond Day in style! If you read JoBlo regularly or visit JoBlo Originals, you’ll likely have noticed that we love James Bond. So when the pandemic hit in 2020, I started revisiting many of my favourite James Bond movies, which was the genesis of our show, James Bond Revisited. Each episode would go in-depth on an individual instalment in the franchise, giving each 007 entry its own moment in the spotlight. While I’m a super fan, I tried to be honest in my assessments, but overall I discovered something about the franchise. Even when an instalment in the series was “bad,” it was still pretty good. I wager there are no all-out disastrous entries into the series save for perhaps Die Another Day, but even there, I had some fun revisiting it.
I had such a good time putting the show...

Last fall, Donald Tang was on the brink of moguldom. He had been wooing Chinese investors and Hollywood executives for years, positioning himself at a critical intersection. He had just acquired Open Road Films, which he would marry with Im Global to form the makings of a studio with a worldwide footprint.
The first major release on his watch would be “Marshall,” the biopic about the Supreme Court justice. Tang was uncommonly enthusiastic about it. It was, he told people, the greatest film he had ever seen and he improbably predicted it would be the highest grossing film of all time.
Open Road had been a modest company by Hollywood standards, trying to stay afloat in the turbulent distribution business by keeping costs in check. But for “Marshall,” Tang wanted an extravaganza. He planned pre-screenings at high schools in 17 cities, and addressed students at Compton High School. He invited Fortune...

Last year I began a tradition to help my fellow Bfca members choose more wisely when it comes to the "Young Performer" category by sharing an eligibility list. My belief is they often choose poorly because this category gets no pre-voting discussion whatsoever and it can be difficult to even think of who is eligible. That said, you can safely expect to see Abraham Attah (Beasts of No Nation) and Jacob Tremblay (Room) nominated because they have leading roles in films that have been discussed. But who else should or could be nominated?
Ballots go out to the Bfca at any moment so here's a cheat sheet to help them vote. The category is Under 21... (but it should obviously be adjusted to 17 and under. Remember that year when the winner came from the sexually explicit Blue is the Warmest Color? That's what you get when you have a category with...

'Maze Runner 2' to beat Johnny Depp 'Black Mass' The 20th Century Fox release Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, the sequel to the 2014 hit The Maze Runner, and Warner Bros.' Johnny Depp star vehicle Black Mass will be battling it out at the North American box office this coming weekend, Sept. 18-20, the last (astronomical) summer weekend of 2015. According to Variety, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials will “likely” end up at the top of the U.S. and Canada box office chart. In fact, more than just “likely,” in case tracking is on target. Including Thursday evening shows, Maze Runner 2 is expected to collect somewhere around $35 million from 3,790 sites, while Black Mass should take in $22 million or so from 3,188 theaters. 'Maze Runner 2' vs. 'The Maze Runner' Maze Runner 2 will then open only about 10 percent ahead of the original,...

The first trailer for Black Mass debuted in April as the film was touted to distributors at CinemaCon, but now here comes a second taste of the true-life gangster drama, which stars Johnny Depp as the notorious James Joseph “Whitey” Bulger. This second promo also features the main man at a dinner table for its framing device, but here he’s eating with his family – wife Lindsey Cyr (Dakota Johnson) and son Douglas (Luke Ryan) – and trying to impart some important lessons to the lad. Which, given his reputation, naturally seem to revolve around getting away with everything, including murder. With Out Of The Furnace’s Scott Cooper directing, Black Mass tells the story of Bulger, who masterminded a violent gang in Boston while also reportedly turning federal informant to take down rivals. It seemed to be working out well – particularly with corrupt FBI agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) helping...
