“This is the purge, right?” Will Smith asked the crowd. “This is the cleanse, this is what happens. This is the natural reaction to the amount of light that came into the world when Barack Obama was the president.”
It was the day after Doug Jones’ stunning win in Alabama and Smith was in a Four Seasons conference room with Joel Edgerton and director David Ayer, promoting their Netflix film, “Bright.” Presumably in a nod to the film’s setting of dystopian Los Angeles, Netflix dressed down the Beverly Hills location with traffic cones, a rusty gate, and an upturned grocery cart.
While Smith never mentioned Jones or President Trump by name, he clearly had the current political climate in mind as he warmed to his subject. “We had to expect that [the pendulum] was going to go the other way,” he said. “As a cleanse — this is the darkness before the dawn.

Horror fans have been looking forward to seeing Mike Flanagan's Before I Wake since the film was teased in trailers back in 2015, but bankruptcy issues at Relativity Media delayed and ultimately brought the movie's release to a halt. Since that time, Flanagan directed two well-received films for Netflix, and the streaming service has now revealed that they will bring Before I Wake out of film purgatory and into the warm glow of the TV screen.
Netflix revealed the exciting Before I Wake news in their full announcement of titles being added to their streaming lineup in January of 2018. Starring Jacob Tremblay, Thomas Jane, and Kate Bosworth, Before I Wake will be available to watch on the streaming service beginning Friday, January 5th, marking its first official release in the Us (it was previously released internationally, including in the UK by Netflix).

Say this for 2018: It can’t be any worse than 2017, right? (Spoiler: It totally can.) At least Netflix’s first batch of offerings inspires cautious optimism in the new year, with everything from the entire “Godfather” trilogy, “Marie Antoinette,” five different “Batman” films and five different “Bring It On” movies (did you even know they’d made that many?), “Midnight in Paris,” the complete “Lethal Weapon” collection, “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,” and “The Truman Show” coming to the streaming service in January.

As for Netflix Originals, there are several: “Before I Wake” and “Rotten” are both available to stream as of January 5, “Somebody Feed Phil” and “The Polka King” premiere a week later, “The Open House” arrives on the 19th, and “A Futile and Stupid Gesture” and “Dirty Money” both debut on the 26th.

The Netflix executive who allegedly told a sexual assault victim that the company did not believe multiple claims made against recently ousted “The Ranch” star Danny Masterson has been fired, Vulture reports. The long-simmering allegations against Masterson, which now include four different women who have accused him of rape, recently came to a head after Andy Yeatman, the now-former director of global kids content, denied an alleged victim to her face.
The story was reported by The Huffington Post earlier this month, when one of Masterson’s alleged victims approached Yeatman at a kids soccer game to ask why the streaming giant had not yet cut ties with Masterson. Yeatman then allegedly told the woman, “[W]e don’t believe them,” not realizing she was one of the alleged victims.

Diane Kruger Is a Serious Actress Finally Getting the Respect She Deserves, Says Director Fatih Akin
Diane Kruger is one of the six names in entertainment being celebrated at the inaugural IndieWire Honors on Nov. 2. Kruger won the best actress prize at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival for her starring role in Fatih Akin’s “In the Fade,” in which she plays a woman whose husband and son are killed in a terrorist attack. Read more about Kruger’s experiences with the project here.
Akin shared these thoughts about how his collaboration with Kruger came together:
I first noticed Diane Kruger as an actress in “National Treasure,” but I was definitely not the audience for a film like that. It didn’t hook me. A couple of years later, I saw “Inglorious Basterds” in a movie theater in Germany. I liked the whole film, especially her small role. In 2007, I won the screenplay at Cannes for my film “The Edge of Heaven” and she was the mistress of ceremonies.

We thought there was no way Bette Midler could top her Winifred Sanderson Halloween costume from last year, but it looks like we were dead wrong. On Monday, the actress showed up to her annual NYC Halloween bash, benefiting the New York Restoration Project, dressed up as none other than Marie Antoinette. From the hair to the makeup to the outfit, everything about Bette's getup was absolute perfection. Heidi Klum better watch out, because it looks like there's a new queen of Halloween in town. Diane Kruger is one of the six names in entertainment being celebrated at the inaugural IndieWire Honors on Nov. 2. Her leading role in Fatih Akin’s “In the Fade” won her best actress at the Cannes Film Festival.
There is a scene in “In the Fade” when Diane Kruger, playing a woman whose husband and son are killed in a suicide bombing, completely melts down. She doesn’t remember it. “It was such an out-of-body experience,” said Kruger, who won best actress at Cannes for role in the German-language production. “There are scenes in the movie where I feel like I’m not acting; I’m reacting to what’s happening in front of me. I was desperately searching for the truth.”
Kruger spent six months preparing for the role, meeting with nearly 30 relatives of murder victims to get inside the headspace, and the trauma stayed with her months after shooting was completed.

It’s no secret RaeLynn loves to shine. The country star — whose debut album was No. 1 on Billboard‘s country charts last June — describes glitter as one of her “favorite things” on her website, the sparkly stuff is essential to her playful, colorful look.
So it’s fitting that the star, who skyrocketed to fame after being coached by Blake Shelton on The Voice, will now be the face of a dazzling makeup line for her longtime favorite brand: Too Faced. The new collection, called Life’s a Festival, is sparkly, colorful and unicorn-themed.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
In honor of Darren Aronofsky’s “mother!,” which just became one of the only movies to ever earn an “F” Cinemascore rating, what is the craziest movie that a major Hollywood studio has released this century?
Joshua Rothkopf (@joshrothkopf), Time Out New York
Talk about a self-answering question. Unless you can point to another movie that brews such an aggressive whirlwind of psychosexual anxiety, starring the biggest star in the world (who is also romantically involved with the director), then we’re talking about “mother!” I’m sure you’ve got “The Wolf of Wall Street” at the ready as an alternative, but how crazy is that film, given...

If you were offended by Louise Linton’s boasts about her wealth on Instagram, brace yourself: Starring in a short-lived reality show called “Hopelessly Rich,” the future wife of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin playfully demanded a suitor buy her a six-carat diamond ring — and charted a yacht to announce a breakup. TheWrap has uncovered footage of the show (above) that suggests bragging is nothing new to Linton. She has drawn comparisons to Marie Antoinette for posts about her lavish lifestyle with Mnuchin. “Hopelessly Rich,” which aired in July of 2003, featured Linton and love interest George William Randolph Hearst III, who claimed.

Louise Linton, the actress wife of U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin who has come under fire this week for her “Let them eat cake”-like online tirade over her designer-tagged Instagram photo, is no stranger to Marie Antoinette moments. One of the Scottish-born actress’ very first Hollywood roles was in a 2007 episode of “CSI: NY” in which she played a French tutor who meets an untimely end at a charity costume party where she dresses as — you guessed it — Marie Antoinette. Her character, Simone DeLille, is led to a decidedly not-fake guillotine by her teenage student — played by...

Even when you live in Los Angeles, as I do, if you’re not in the network of critics groups and press screening and screener DVDs it can be a challenge to keep up with everything you tell yourself you have to see before attempting an informed roundup of the year currently in the rearview mirror. And I also try to not let more than a couple of weeks of the new year go by before checking in, regardless of how many of the year’s big presents I have left to unwrap, though in past years I have not lived well by this dictum—let’s just say that if I’m still posting stuff on the year’s best after even Oscar has thoroughly chewed over the goods, as has happened in the past, well, I’ve overstayed my welcome.

The 2017 Sundance Film Festival wraps up this Sunday, but while most of the films in competition have already premiered, there are still a few screenings left for those still in Park City. One film that’s receiving a repeat screening is Marianna Palka’s film “Bitch,” a satirical drama about a lonely, distraught housewife (Palka) who suddenly assumes the psyche of a vicious dog while her philandering, absentee husband (Jason Ritter) is forced to take care of their four children amidst the crisis.

Whirledge’s score, which “erupts with discordant melodies that play off a layered sound mix rich with competing cues, overlapping dialogue, and ever-present barking that convey the sheer chaos of a stable world facing its reckoning.

As People’s Beauty Editor, I spend most days hunting, gathering and carving up celebrity beauty scoop into digestible soundbites. But last May, a celeb revelation stopped me dead in my tracks. I was just about ready to roll up my sleeves and draw inspiration from my orange-tinted forearms for a story on the pros and cons of bronzing … when Alicia Keys announced she was breaking up with makeup.
In a Lenny newsletter last May, Keys recounted how insecure she once felt at the very thought of being spotted outside without makeup on, and revealed that she’d now made...

We’re aware that models have to switch up their looks for different shoots, but these six models almost fooled us with their chameleon-like transformations. Almost.
Gigi Hadid‘s stunning new campaign for Max Mara, in which she poses upside down with her legs elevated, shows off her versatility as a model. Maybe it’s because she’s upside down or rocking Marie Antoinette hair, but it took us a few moments to recognize her.
Here are six more models who made us think, “I know her from somewhere …” until we realized who she was.

Cinderella. Mirror Mirror. Bright Star. I Am Love. Australia. Marie Antoinette. The list goes on.
The costume design branch so commonly gives films their single solitary Oscar nomination that it’s become a prognosticator mission of sorts to figure out which couture creations the branch will extend this particular honor to. They are also the branch most likely to ignore critical and commercial receptions and nominate based purely on the craft and that’s why we love them. Perhaps it is because costume designers have spent decades being the frills-and-sequin-loving daughter of Oscar when all he wanted was sons, but they use their unique privilege more wisely than others (we’re looking at you, composers!)
It was obvious, then, to me which film I should be championing here and it is Marion Boyce and Margot Wilson for The Dressmaker...

Designer Olivier Rousteing Designed the Dress Kim Kardashian Wore the Night North West Was Conceived
Typically, when you think of great romances through history there’s a shortlist of names that come to mind. Couples like Romeo and Juliet, Rose and Jack, and the greatest love affair of them all, Macaroni and Cheese. But there’s one more twenty-first century pairing you should add to that list of ever-lasting, star-crossed matches, and that is Kim Kardashian and the designer behind Balmain and the majority of her most memorable custom looks, Olivier Rousteing. And in a new video for the reality star’s website, the designer talks about why he loves this particular woman so much...

How the hell is “Lion” so damn good?
It’s one of the big questions hovering over the holiday movie season, right up there with urgent queries like “How many times have you seen ‘Moonlight?’” And it’s a question worth asking because — at least on paper — “Lion” should have been a kitschy melodrama or an exploitative disaster. Possibly both.
For one thing, it’s based on the kind of dangerously incredible true story that seems too astounding to go untold, but also — in a strange way — too banal to be dramatized. Saroo Brierley was born with a name he couldn’t remember, and in a place he couldn’t name. Raised in a squalid pocket of rural India with his single mother and older brothers, Saroo was accidentally separated from his family at age five, transported 930 miles across the country in the empty carriage of a random train, and...

Chris here. As we've been reminiscing on Marie Antoinette, it's worth calling out what an enduring fashion icon she remains hundreds of years after the fact. Her persona and iconography has been used endlessly in pop culture moments big and small, such as Madonna's iconic Vma "Vogue" performance. But naturally I'm here to talk about her influence on a particular art form: drag. The queens of RuPaul's Drag Race to be specific.
Category Is: Marie Antoinette At A Ball. Let's take a look at what the queens served when interpreting the Queen.

We're celebrating Marie Antoinette for a few more days this week. Here's abstew - Editor
The legendary figure of Marie Antoinette has been the subject of gossip and infamy for over 200 years now. Although most scholars agree that all we may think we know about the excessive queen is mostly a misunderstanding. Even the most well-known phrase attributed to her, "Let them eat cake!", has been debunked as never actually been spoken by her. Even in her own time, there were pamphlets spread around France accusing her of infidelities with both men and women. At her trial, she was accused of staging orgies at the Palace of Versailles and even committing incest with her own son. Playing off of these rumors, French director Benoît Jacquot's 2012 film about Marie Antoinette, Farewell, My Queen, based on the novel by Chantal Thomas, invents a lesbian relationship between the Queen and a duchess at court.

Gee this wig weighs a ton.
Singin' in the Rain is, of course, a beloved movie about our beloved movies. There's lots of broad goofing on Hollywood history for movie buff amusement. But sometimes the gentle ribbing is actually pointed jabs. When Lina Lamont enters the shot above to shoot The Dueling Cavaliers the joke is bigger than her constant whining...

Ten years ago today Martin Scorsese's smash hit The Departed opened in theaters. I remember that day well especially that beat just past this still above when the entire sold out movie theater exploded simultaneously with shock, excitement, screaming, whooping, collective chills. A master playing the audience perfectly so it's no wonder that Martin Scorsese finally won the Oscar for it. Strangely I have few other vivid memories of the movie other than the feeling that that deep line in Leonardo DiCaprio's perma-angst expression had never and would never be put to better use again. Also something about Vera Farmiga flirting in an elevator, and the movie's perfect final shot.
The Film Experience was definitely having an "off consensus" year -- we were all about Marie Antoinette, The Fountain, & Volver so the Oscars were kind of a let-down -- but at least it was one...

Christian Grey, is that you? The designers out of Art Hearts Fashion seemingly took a page out of the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise when they recently debuted a number of bondage-inspired looks at New York Fashion Week. The models, both male and female, left little to the imagination with their barely-there ensembles of leather, lace and lots of skin. Marie Antoinette also appeared to have shaped the runway show's daring vibe, as girls rocked larger-than-life grey wigs and pale makeup while strutting down the runway in scantily-clad lingerie. The guys, on the other hand, mixed business with pleasure in edgy ties, Bdsm collars and six packs on top of six packs. We're...

Rihanna has her hands full in Cr Fashion Book's Fall/Winter issue. Photographed by Terry Richardson and styled by Carine Roitfeld, the "Love on the Brain" singer modeled provocative designs by Dilara Findikoglu, Le Vestiaire, Dior and Kunza Corsetorium. Stephane Marais did her makeup and Yusef Williams styled her hair to make Rihanna look like a modern-day Marie Antoinette. "I wanted to show that she is not just a villain to be despised or a muse to be channeled," Roitfield said of the fashion-forward photo shoot. "She is neither, actually. She is a prototype for contemporary fame, body, beauty, celebrity and femininity." No kidding. In one of the photos, Rihanna grabbed her right...

"While big-shot Hollywood producers once demanded a trophy Banksy canvas to be hanging above their faux-Spanish fireplaces, now all they want is one of [Tyler] Shields' gloriously twisted photographs," GQ has said of Shields' work. And while the photographer himself might not describe his work as "gloriously twisted," his aesthetic is certainly a unique one, with photos of Josh Hutcherson covered in mud, Teen Wolf star Holland Roden as a Marie Antoinette-esque royal and another of her as a 1960s woman reacting to the news of President John F. Kennedy's assassination dotting his CV. Shields' second book of photography,...

Most recently, West chose to compare his wife to Marie Antoinette. In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, he said, "For Kim to be photographed so much, [she] represents our modern day Marie Antoinette."
That's an interesting comparison. Who (or what) else has Kanye compared Kim to? Let's take a look.

“How are you not a big damn star?” This was the question I most itching to ask German actress Diane Kruger when we sat down to discuss her curious career and her latest lauded film, Alice Winocour’s surreal thriller “Disorder.”
A striking beauty with regal cheekbones, the tri-lingual Kruger has been awing audiences for years, thanks to turns in French prestige pictures like Benoît Jacquot’s “Farewell, My Queen” and bold American movies like Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds.” Yet somehow, Kruger’s path has not led her to A-list status. Retracing her steps from ballerina to model to internationally acclaimed thespian, we explored the whys and why bother of it all.
