The Cannes Film Festival will crown its Competition winners tomorrow night and the consensus seems to be building around a few titles.
All films have now been seen and it’s fair to say that things really heated up in the back nine. The Competition section took a few days to catch fire sparking rumor that this was unlikely to be a vintage crop of movies but Emilia Perez‘s bow last Saturday finally kicked the contest into another gear and since then multiple films have fared well among critics. There have been some notable highs on trade jury grids. The Palme d’Or winner is often not the movie with the highest final score on such lists but the impressively high numbers reveal a range of critically appreciated movies this edition.
One of the trends to emerge from this year’s lineup is the foregrounded position of women within the most buzzed-about films.

Netflix is in talks to acquire one of the most talked about titles at this year’s Cannes Film Festival: Emilia Pérez.
The movie, from writer-director Jacques Audiard, follows a cartel leader who hires an undervalued lawyer to help him withdraw from his business and realize a plan he has been secretly preparing for years, to transition into a woman.
Zoe Saldaña stars in the film, along with Selena Gomez and Edgar Ramirez, with breakout Karla Sofia Gascón as the title character.
The film earned a warm Cannes reception with a long standing ovation and near universal praise from critics.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s review reads: “The baseline is a drama of criminality and redemption, but then there’s an unforced current of Almodóvarian humor, along with moments of melodrama, noir, social realism, a hint of telenovela camp and a climactic escalation into suspense, ultimately touched by tragedy. All this...

On paper, it looks mad as a loose wheel. A largely Spanish-language musical about a Mexican druglord having a sex change, featuring onetime Disney teen star Selena Gomez as a gangster’s wife: nobody could deny director and writer Jacques Audiard’s giddy determination to do something different, but how could Emilia Pérez be anything but a hot mess? But here is it is on the screen, a musical marvel. Of course it’s crazy, but Audiard has set up his impossible conjuring trick and made it work.
Emilia Pérez fires up immediately with an eccentric chanson about consumption – “we buy washing machines; we buy microwaves” – that literally sets the tone for what will follow. Rita Moro Castro (Zoe Saldaña) would love to consume a little more; she is a junior barrister flatlining as her boss’ more capable helpmate. Her story is told swiftly: Saldaña delivers a deft dance with the office cleaning women,...

The Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, also known as “the Oscars of Science,” is an awards show unlike any other.
Founded and funded by Silicon Valley titan Yuri Milner and his artist wife Julia Milner, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, 23andMe co-founder Anne Wojcicki, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative co-founder Priscilla Chan, the Breakthrough Prize recognizes “scientists changing the world” with award statuettes and sizable cash prizes. And on Saturday night, at the ceremony’s 10th edition — the second in a row held on the roof of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, with the Hollywood Hills glistening in the background — presenters, performers and audience members included a collection of A-listers that could give the Oscars a run for their money.
One could turn left and spot Bill Gates and Robert Downey Jr. sitting at the same table, or right and find tablemates Bradley Cooper and Rupert Murdoch schmoozing.

"Borderlands" is one of the most popular video game franchises of the 2000s. Now, it's becoming a movie, with Lionsgate hoping to turn it into a franchise for the big screen. Directed by Eli Roth, this video game adaptation has been in the works for a long, long time, but it's finally hitting theaters this summer. That being the case, the studio brought some new footage from the film to this year's CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and I was on hand to see what Roth cooked up.
One thing the movie has going for it is a stellar A-list cast led by Cate Blanchett ("Thor: Ragnarok") as Lilith. The ensemble also includes Jack Black ("The Super Mario Bros. Movie"), Kevin Hart ("Lift"), Jamie Lee Curtis ("Halloween"), Ariana Greenblatt ("Barbie"), Florian Munteanu ("Creed II"), and Edgar Ramirez ("Yes Day"). It also, at one point, had "The Last of Us" and "Chernobyl") writer Craig Mazin attached,...

Fill the cannons with stuffed animals and watch the fluff fly as Eli Roth’s Borderlands takes the Lionsgate stage at CinemaCon! The annual entertainment event is in full swing after yesterday’s Warner Bros. panel and reveal of Todd Phillips’s Joker: Folie à Deux trailer. With film and television fans fired up about upcoming releases, Lionsgate is ready to take them to a wasteland where kooky characters try to kill each other, and a fabled vault of riches awaits.
The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin wrote the initial screenplay for Borderlands but removed his name from the project after the script was rewritten by Roth, Juel Taylor, Tony Rettenmaier, Joe Crombie, Chris Bremner, and Sam Levinson. Zak Olkewicz wrote scenes for Miller during the reshoots. Elements from drafts Aaron Berg and Oren Uziel wrote before Mazin have reportedly made their way into the film as well. So...

Before she solved murders at the Arconia alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short in Only Murders in the Building, Selena Gomez made magic happen for Disney as a part of Wizards of Waverly Place. The enchanting teen sitcom cast a spell on Mouseketeers for four seasons from 2007 to 2012, and now, toil and trouble are brewing again with a Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series under the working title Wizards.
Original stars Selena Gomez (Alex Russo) and David Henrie (Justin Russo) will take their wands out of storage to executive produce the revival project. At the same time, Gomez plans to appear in a guest role, with Henrie returning as a primary cast member for the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series. The duo plans to launch Wizards on Disney Channel and Disney+ later this year. The project comes from Disney Branded Television.

In addition to Amell, Davis also joins series regular Josh McDermitt in the pilot, whose production is scheduled to start in late March in Vancouver. She landed the role after an extensive search.

Last week, the trailer for director Eli Roth’s long-awaited video game adaptation Borderlands, which is set to reach theatres on August 9th, made its way online – and while talking to Entertainment Weekly about the trailer, Roth revealed that he’s currently writing a horror script with 16-year-old Borderlands cast member Ariana Greenblatt, who plays Tiny Tina in the upcoming movie!
Roth told Entertainment Weekly that Greenblatt “loves horror, and we have a great idea, so we’re writing a movie together. That is an exclusive, nobody knows that. I don’t want to say anything about it yet, but she’s so smart I’m like, ‘Let’s write a movie together, and we’ll produce it together, and I’ll direct it, and you’ll star in it.’” Of course, Roth didn’t give away any details about the story he and Greenblatt are collaborating on. In the wake of the new trailer this week, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford has said Borderlands is merely the start of a ‘cinematic universe’.
Already a popular series of shooter videogames, Borderlands and its colourful line in humour is being brought to cinemas by Eli Roth. And, as the first trailer finally emerged this week after a series of delays – filming on Borderlands originally began in 2021 – Gearbox Software founder Randy Pitchford has said it’s but one chapter in a much larger cinematic universe.
Pitchford, whose studio made the original games and also serves as an executive producer on this summer’s Borderlands film, talked to IGN about the ambitious plans in place to turn the shooter series into a broader movie franchise.
“One of the cool things about the movie is we’ve created a cinematic universe that lives side by side with the video game universe,” Pitchford said.

The Borderlands video game franchise has been a smash success since its debut back in 2009.
And now, the saga of the magical Siren Lilith and her quest for galactic wealth is making its way to the big screen.
The film, directed by Hostel and Cabin Fever auteur Eli Roth, won't premiere until August 9, but we have a good sense of the vibe thanks to a trailer released by Lionsgate today.
Fresh off her acclaimed performance in Tár, Cate Blanchett plays a very different kind of stoic badass in her first foray into the world of video game adaptations.
As Lilith, Blanchett heads up a band of interplanetary misfits determined to retrieve a massive treasure from a “dumpster fire of a world.”
The crew includes Kevin Hart as a soldier named Roland and Jamie Lee Curtis as the eccentric researcher Tannis.
Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Haley Bennett, and Edgar Ramirez round out the cast.

Cate Blanchett’s Lilith travels to a planet she hates to find a massive treasure hidden in a vault in the first trailer for Lionsgate’s Borderlands. Lilith can’t do the treasure hunt alone and is forced to team up with an odd assortment of people on a planet that has an actual gully made of piss.

If it feels like we've been waiting ages to actually see something from Borderlands – adapting the wildly popular video game series, and that's because it's been trundling through development for years – and, while Eli Roth directed the main shoot, Deadpool's Tim Miller handled some more recent re-shoots. And with the first trailer now online, we can see the results of all that work, with Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black and Ariana Greenblatt front and centre. Take a look:
Borderlands follows Blanchett Lilith, a notorious outlaw and fortune-seeker who heads back to her home planet of Pandora (a place she was only too happy to leave in the first place) on a mission to track down the missing daughter of the wealthy and evil Atlas (Edgar Ramirez).
It doesn't hurt that the planet also boasts a reportedly huge treasure lurking with in vault, so Lilith gathers...

Filming wrapped on director Eli Roth‘s adaptation of the Borderlands video game series from Gearbox and 2K way back in June of 2021. A year and a half later, Deadpool director Tim Miller had to step in to handle the project’s two weeks of reshoots because Roth had the chance to finally – after sixteen years – make a feature based on the Thanksgiving faux trailer he put together for the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse. The Borderlands reshoots have been completed, Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Lionsgate is now gearing up to finally release Borderlands into the world on August 9th. With just over five months to go until that date arrives, Lionsgate has unveiled a trailer for the film, and you can check that out in the embed above.

An adaptation of the popular video game, Eli Roth’s Borderlands is finally set for big screen release this summer, and the official trailer has arrived as promised this morning.
Lionsgate will be releasing Borderlands on August 9, 2024.
Watch the Borderlands movie trailer below!
It’s hard to shake the off-brand James Gunn feeling that is probably inherent to this type of movie at this point, but Roth’s Borderlands does look quite fun. Gunn is a master of threading story and deep character work into all the action, and this will likely sink or swim based on how well it does the same. For now, it looks and feels like Borderlands. And that’s a good start.

At long last, the first trailer for the "Borderlands" movie has arrived. Directed by Eli Roth, this is the long-awaited adaptation of the very popular series of video games from Gearbox and 2K. Lionsgate has been getting the film ready behind the scenes for several years, and with the release date set for this summer, the studio has finally decided to show us what they've cooked up. Check it out for yourself above.

The world looks like the world of the games. It feels right in that sense. It also feels, cinematically, like a mix between Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" films and "Mad Max." Whether or not it's anywhere near as good as those...

Olivier Assayas, the celebrated French director of “Clouds of Sils Maria” and “Irma Vep,” is making his Berlinale competition debut this year with “Suspended Time,” his most personal film to date.
Speaking to Variety ahead of the movie’s premiere at the Berlinale, Assayas says the film retells his experience during the lockdown and is based on his personal diary.
“When I was writing this diary, I felt that despite my anxieties and doubts or fears, it was an idyllic period, to be confined in the countryside,” he says. “It was a time where we believed in a form of utopia and as soon as society got back in action, it dissolved.”
Narrated by Assayas and woven with archival material, the comedy stars Vincent Macaigne as the director’s alter-ego, Paul, a well-known filmmaker who is confined with his music journalist brother Etienne (Micha Lescot) and their girlfriends Morgane (Nine d’Urso...
