In director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s new biopic Back to Black, British costume designer PC Williams took on the monumental task of dressing Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse, as well as the rest of the cast. Named for Winehouse’s second and final studio album released in 2006, the film spans eight years in the life of the iconic singer, who passed away in 2011 at just 27 years old.
Winehouse left a tall fashion legacy with her unique mix of retro va-va-voom styles and sportswear. Caricature-like proportions were another signature — from a giant beehive, bold gold jewelry and teetering peep-toe pumps to diminutive halter dresses and ultra-skinny jeans. In 2010, the singer even collaborated with one of her favorite British labels, Fred Perry, on a 17-piece capsule line. The brand, featured heavily in the film, continues an ongoing collection to benefit the Amy Winehouse Foundation. A 2021 Julien’s Auctions sale of some of the...

While Leeds Fc have refused to confirm Ferrell’s arrival in its boardroom, saying they never comment on individual stakeholders, The Sun reports that the comedic actor had paid the club’s US owners 49ers Enterprises, that his involvement will be unveiled in a few days and quotes an insider confirming: “It’s true – Will Ferrell owns a share of Leeds. The 29-year-old British star Jacob Collier has risen to fame from YouTube all the way to the Grammys, earning six trophies throughout his career. While Collier was a Grammy favorite from his first album, “Djesse Vol. 3” was the one to put him on the radar for a lot of folks, earning three Grammy noms including for Album of the Year. That nomination was quite unexpected and launched Collier to a lot more fame, especially as his fusion of jazz/R&b/pop is quite unique and not what many would expect to cross over to the Grammy mainstream. Despite not being a huge commercial artist, Collier might be looking at his biggest year ever at the Grammys with his new album, “Djesse Vol. 4.” But just how much recognition will Collier get?

Celebrated singer-songwriter Sampha picked Steve Lacy’s hit “Bad Habit” for his customary cover during an appearance on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge.
Sampha delivered a pared-back, practically delicate rendition of the song. Instead of the original’s thumping drum beat, Sampha used only a spare, skittering percussion track which provided a steely counterweight to the tender thrum of his piano and vocals.
Along with his rendition of “Bad Habit,” Sampha also performed his own song, “Only,” off of his recent LP, Lahai. The LP, released last week on Oct.

Mercury Prize-winning singer and producer Sampha returned Wednesday with “Spirit 2.0,” his first solo song in over six years.
While Sampha’s acclaimed 2017 album Process found the singer tackling grief head-on, “Spirit 2.0” strikes a more optimistic tone.
“It’s about the importance of connection to both myself and others, and the beauty and harsh realities of just existing. It’s about acknowledging those moments when you need help – that requires real strength,” Sampha said of the track in a statement.

Not too long ago, the British girl group Flo were a newly signed act trying to persuade their label to drop a song called “Cardboard Box” as their debut single. The label wanted to try other songs first, but Jorja Douglas, 21, Stella Quaresma, 21, and Renée Downer, 20, collectively agreed that the lively R&b breakup track was the one.
“It’s just a thing between us three,” says Douglas. “When we’re all on the same page, we’re a force to be … what’s the word?”
“Reckoned with,” finishes Quaresma.

Shawn Mendes is back on the stage after over a year.
On Saturday, he surprised many fans at Ed Sheeran’s concert in Toronto as the “U.N.I.” singer called the Canadian musician onstage. They then performed an acoustic version of Mendes’ song “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.”
Last year, the 24-year-old canceled his Wonder World Tour to focus on his mental health and said that considering he began his touring days at age 15, “it’s always been difficult to be on the road away from friends and family.”
“I feel a bit speechless about it, to be honest right now,” Mendes said on stage as he and Sheeran talked about their performance.
As the two singers discussed the fans’ reactions to the concert, Sheeran said, “I’ve had that three times in my life at gigs.”
He then listed the three gigs, “Paolo Nutini in Glasgow, Stormzy...

It was three years ago that Avelino announced – his words – “the greatest rap debut in British history”. This Friday, the north-London-based artist’s album is released at last. So, what took him so long? “You can’t rush greatness,” he says with a cool shrug. In the event, God Save the Streets could hardly have been better timed. Out less than a month before the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla, it is loaded with nuanced ruminations on poverty, mental health and authority, with the new monarchy serving as a dubious backdrop. The title’s obvious reference to the Sex Pistols’ 1977 single “God Save the Queen” is deliberate. “Rap is the new punk,” Avelino declares.
“You look back at [the Seventies] and that was the music of their generation, the music of the streets.” He captures its defiant spirit on single “Vex”, a sizzling concoction of trap beats and futuristic-sounding synths:...

Joanna Lumley, the BAFTA-winning British actress, has said that women would lose out if award ceremonies switched to gender-neutral prizes.
The Absolutely Fabulous and Paddington performer said she was unsure about the drift away from segregating awards on the basis of gender, saying it was “a bit weird.”
Ceremonies including the Brit awards have embraced gender-neutral categories, while BAFTA has said it is actively considering the issue. Emma Corrin, who identifies as non-binary, is a vocal supporter.
Lumley is less sweet on the idea, telling TalkTV: “I know that if my name was just put up as best actor against lots of men, I wouldn’t have a chance. But as best actress, you might.”
The Brits was criticized this year after its award for artist of the year featured an all-male list of nominees, including Stormzy and Harry Styles.
Others in the industry think the gender-neutral move is inevitable.

Sam Smith was reportedly ‘furious’ ahead of their performance at the Brit Awards on Saturday night (11 February).
According to reports, their performance had to be delayed and was nearly abandoned entirely after technical issues caused problems on set.
Smith performed their song “Unholy” alongside collaborator Kim Petras at the O2 Arena.
The impressive show saw an array of dancers performing on cars in a garage set, including one that jolted up and down.
According to reports, this car was the root of the problem.
With the issues ongoing, Stormzy reportedly had his performance moved forward to cover the problems.
Brit Awards host, Mo Gilligan hinted at technical issues when he directed viewers to an archive performance of Adele from the previous year.
Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Smith was apparently worrying over the forthcoming performance’s fate.
“Sam’s performance might have appeared seamless but behind-the-scenes it was a nightmare,” a source toldThe Sun.

The Brits 2023 are officially over for another year, and it was Harry Styles's night. As predicted, the "As It Was" singer took home artist of the year, song of the year, best pop / r&b, and album of the year - marking the start of a very good 2023 for the former One Direction member, having won the best album award at the Grammys just a week earlier. Wet Leg and Beyoncé both won two Brits, while The 1975, Aitch, and Becky Hill also scooped the top prizes.
Styles sweeping the board even saw him enter an exclusive club, unofficially named the "4 Brits Club." Dave Rowntree, the drummer of Blur, tweeted on Feb. 12, "I'd like to welcome @Harry_Styles to the #4BritsClub. It's been a bit lonely with just us and @Adele these past years. Next meeting in March – you can bring the biscuits." While there are artists who have won...

Like Harry Styles, Charli Xcx criticized the Brit Awards’ voting body for failing to nominate any female artists for one of the event’s most prestigious awards.
When asked by the BBC about the snub of female artists in the British Artist of the Year category, Charli Xcx responded, “I was an album cycle and I had a Number One album [Crash]… so yeah there’s many of us… We’re doing everything right, I don’t think it’s our fault, I think it might be theirs,” alluding to the...

Awards ceremonies like the Brits can always do better, but by now they’re just an excuse for a party
There was a five-headed elephant in the room at what was otherwise a strangely flat affair at the Brit Awards. As is tradition with music ceremonies, a row flared up over representation after the nominations were announced. The gender-neutral Artist of the Year category was entirely made up of male artists: Central Cee, Fred Again, George Ezra, Harry Styles and Stormzy.
The switch from gendered categories was implemented in 2021 after Sam Smith – who came out as non-binary two years earlier – urged awards shows to be “reflective of the society we live in”. At the first non-gendered awards show in 2022, Adele walked away with the Artist of the Year prize, for which Little Simz, Sam Fender, Dave and Ed Sheeran had also been nominated.
Women fared well across the board, with Olivia Rodrigo winning Best International Song, Wolf Alice taking home the British Group prize, Becky Hill for British Dance Act,...
