After 12 seasons, Curb Your Enthusiasm has come to a close. Seinfeld co-creator Larry David played a curmudgeonly version of himself for 120 episodes of the semi-improvised cringe comedy, which was nominated for 47 Emmy Awards over the course of its run.
But all good things must come to an end, which Curb Your Enthusiasm did in April of 2024. Luckily, one of Cye’s stars has a perfect replacement series on Netflix.

Jb Smoove played Leon Black in Cye for the last half of the series. He was introduced in season 6 as the brother of Larry’s love interest Loretta Black.
After Hurricane Katrina destroys her home, single mom Loretta moves her family in with Larry. Leon ends up tagging along with his sister (even though he already lived in LA and was unaffected by the hurricane), and sticks around to be Larry’s roommate even after Loretta leaves.

Netflix’s Good Times reboot has drawn ire from audiences and national organizations such as the NAACP for its perceived stereotypical depictions of African Americans since its trailer was first released on March 27. That same day, a Change.org petition, which has gathered some 5,000 signatures, was launched calling on viewers to boycott the new show which “promotes violence, culture destruction of the Black community and alcohol abuse,” the creator of the petition wrote.
Showrunner Ranada Shepard understands the knee-jerk reaction.
“You haven’t seen J.B. [Smoove] and Yvette [Nicole Brown] and Marsai [Martin] and Jay Pharoah and Slink Johnson on couches all across America, which typically happens when you’re rolling out a show. There was no framing that the audience had, it was just: Watch this and form an opinion. And, they watched and they formed an opinion,” Shepard tells THR in the conversation below.

Parodying one’s self on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is a celebrity rite of passage, with everyone from Martin Scorsese and Bruce Springsteen to Salman Rushdie and Lt. Colonel Alexander Vindman stopping by Larry David’s HBO sitcom to celebrate their own neuroses over the past quarter century. But now that the show has finally wrapped after a 12-season run, the cast can admit that some cameos tower above the competition in the pantheon of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” history.
During a panel discussion about the show’s 12th season moderated by Judd Apatow at PaleyFest LA 2024, longtime series regular J.B. Smoove reflected on his favorite celebrity appearances on the show. He singled out Michael J. Fox’s two episodes in Seasons 8 and 9 (which aired six years apart due to the show’s hiatus), as a high point in the series.

HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is so effective at creating a plausible reality for Larry David‘s eponymous character that one could be forgiven for assuming the entire series is simply shot in pre-existing locations. While the show has unquestionably made hilarious use of dozens of Los Angeles locations over its 12 seasons, some of its most recognizable environments are sets that have been carefully designed and decorated to express character.
The guest house in which Larry’s permanent roommate, Leon Black (Jb Smoove), lives is a case in point, and its design is a subtle blend of Larry and Leon’s personalities since it’s Larry’s property but, for all practical purposes, Leon has taken it over. “The big furniture is all Larry’s,” set decorator Eden Barr told IndieWire, “but Leon has ‘Leon-ed’ it up with things that make it his happy place.” To that end, the guest...

As “Curb Your Enthusiasm” prepares to bid farewell after a 24-year run and 12 seasons on HBO, star J.B. Smoove argues there’s one mystery left unsolved that he’d love to see get the spin-off treatment: What was Leon Black up to before he met Larry David?
“I’d be a fool to say I wouldn’t be open to a spin-off,” Smoove told TheWrap. “I think this dude has levels to him. We don’t know what he does when he’s not with Larry, we don’t know where he came from. I think there’s something to this guy that’s really interesting in how he sees things.”
Leon first appeared in “Curb” during Season 6 when he decides to take refuge at Larry and Cheryl’s house after his family is displaced by a hurricane — and proceeds to never move out. Over the subsequent seven seasons, he...

Yvette Nicole Brown Defends Good Times Role, Insists ‘Edgy’ Netflix Reboot ‘Lines Up With My Values’
Yvette Nicole Brown is content to let the Good Times roll, pushing back against criticism of her involvement with Netflix’s reboot of the sitcom.
Dropping Friday, April 12, the forthcoming Good Times follow-up is an animated — and, as evidenced by Wednesday’s trailer, a noticeably raunchier — take on the 1970s classic, centered on the latest generation of the Evans family. Brown voices Beverly Evans, the wife of cab driver Reggie (J.B. Smoove), and she’s taken to social media to call out fans questioning her participation in the new series.

This isn’t the Good Times of your childhood.
Yvette Nicole Brown, who voices the character of Beverly Evans in the new animated version of Good Times for Netflix, promises it will be an “edgier, more irreverent” reboot of Norman Lear‘s groundbreaking TV sitcom.
After one of Brown’s followers wrote on X Wednesday that “I’m surprised you attached yourself to this project. Looks nothing like the show we grew up on,” Brown responded with a promise that the reboot will offer as much, if not more, than the original.
“This show is edgier and more irreverent than the Good Times of our childhood but it’s still a show about family, fighting the system and working to make things better despite where you start out in the world,” Brown wrote. “That 100% lines up with my values.”

Per the logline, the animated Good Times series finds the latest generation of the Evans family, cab driver Reggie (Smoove) and his wife, the ever-aspirational Beverly (Brown), scratching and surviving in one of the last remaining housing projects in Chicago along with their teenage artist son, Junior (Pharoah), activist daughter Grey (Martin), and drug dealing infant son, Dalvin (Johnson). Kevin Hart wiped away tears on stage as he looked up from the bronze bust on a pedestal to the trio of comedy legends who had come to witness his professional highlight.
In the VIP balcony of the Kennedy Center opera house, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle sat side by side, watching Hart accept the Mark Twain Prize for lifetime achievement in comedy Sunday night.
“I didn’t start doing what I was doing to get awards,” Hart said. “I just fell in love with the idea of comedy.”
Hart rose from the open mics and comedy clubs of his native Philadelphia to become one of his country’s most recognizable performers — honing a signature style that combines his diminutive height, expressive face and motormouth delivery into an arena-packing stand-up act. The final season of Curb Your Enthusiasm reunited Larry David with one of his closest co-stars when the late Richard Lewis returned to the HBO comedy after taking a hiatus over his health.
On the Feb. 18 episode of season 12, titled “Vertical Drop, Horizontal Tug,” the lifelong friends were seen riding a golf cart, talking about their Wordle streaks and golf swings. Their friendly chatter quickly turned antagonistic — as could be expected from the comedians’ Curb alter egos — when Lewis told Larry he tweaked his will and had added the Seinfeld creator to his end-of-life document. When Larry pushes back, insisting he doesn’t need his money, Lewis counters: “When I die, I want you to know how much I cared about you. You’re my best friend, you’re getting it.” Despite Larry’s insistence that he would not accept the offer, Lewis didn’t give up: “I’m giving it to you anyway,...

[This story contains spoilers from the third episode of season 12 of Curb Your Enthusiasm.]
In the world of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David is back in Los Angeles and he’s a bit famous.
The third episode of the HBO comedy’s final season brought the so-called liberal darling back from Georgia, where he made national news for violating the Election Integrity Act when he got arrested for offering Leon’s (J.B. Smoove) aunt, Auntie Rae (Ellia English), a bottle of water while she was in a voting line. He has a trial looming — and is facing up to one year in prison and a fine of $10,000 — but he has the new perk of being praised by strangers, including actress Sienna Miller, who appeared to be flirting with the famous curmudgeon.
With Larry back in L.A., the ensemble was all gathered as Cheryl Hines, Ted Danson, Richard Lewis and Vince Vaughn reunited with David, Smoove, Jeff Garlin and Susie Essman...

Until you rewatch the early seasons, it’s easy to forget that Leon Black wasn’t always part of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Larry David‘s permanent houseguest, played to delirious perfection by comedian J.B. Curb Your Enthusiasm has been part of the comedy zeitgeist since it first aired in 2000. The HBO sitcom never quite followed routine season premieres. But fans always welcomed the return of Larry David to their screens. This was the case once more on January 30, 2024, as the cast gathered with stars and producers to celebrate the 12th and final Curb Your Enthusiasm premiere.

When the stars of Curb Your Enthusiasm gathered to celebrate the show’s 12th and final season in Los Angeles on Tuesday, a question remained in the air: Is this really the end?
The HBO comedy has been on the air for 24 years — including a six-year hiatus between 2011 and 2017 — and it’s been unclear if the show would return several times throughout its history. As co-star and executive producer Jeff Garlin pointed out at the premiere event, “every year there was a chance we were not going to come back, every year.” However, he added that, in the past, creator and star Larry David “has never said the words ‘This is the last season;’ he said that this year, and when you watch the season, it’ll all make sense.”

Curb Your Enthusiasm fans should start getting their core in shape because comedian Jb Smoove says season 12 of the HBO series is an absolute gut-buster.

Prettay… prettay… prettay… bad?
“Curb Your Enthusiasm” may be coming to an end after 12 seasons, after two producers hinted on social media that they had wrapped production on the series for good. According to a now-deleted tweet from producer Jon Hayman, the crew finished “shooting the last scene of the last episode of the final season.”
Hayman attached an image to his since-deleted tweet (see below), in which David looks at a monitor displaying the apparent final scene. In the scene, Larry appears to be sitting on a plane next to J.B. Smoove’s character Leon, which, as GQ notes, is reminiscent of the Season 8 ending, when the longtime pals leave the United States to jaunt around Paris.
Maybe you love the show. Maybe you hate the show. Maybe you don't give a shit. In any event, shooting the last scene of the last episode of the final season.

Netflix just aired its first-ever live special, and from a pure production standpoint, it went off nearly without a hitch. "Chris Rock: Selective Outrage" will surely grab headlines for its final ten minutes, as the comedian capped off an intermittently funny hour with an extended tirade during which he delivered low blow after low blow aimed at Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. There's plenty to be said about those anger-filled moments and all the good, bad, and ugly that came before them (look out for more coverage from /Film that will dig into the details), but it's also worth unpacking the live production elements that mark a brand new step for the streaming giant. Did Netflix pull this whole thing off? Should they keep experimenting with live TV?

If J.B Smoove had it his way, he’d cast himself as the lead in a biopic about the late comedian Dick Gregory. “In another world, another life, if I was 20 years younger, I would love to play that man,” says the Emmy-winning actor and stand-up comic. “He really had an amazing, fascinating life.”
Smoove (né Jerry Brooks) did a deep dive on Gregory’s life when he narrated the six-part Audible Originals podcast Funny My Way, uncovering the lives of six Black comedy legends: Gregory, Flip Wilson, Paul Mooney, Moms Mabley, Rudy Ray Moore and Redd Foxx. His performance has earned the Curb Your Enthusiasm star an Ambie nomination for best podcast host.

What does Harley Quinn love about Valentine’s Day? It’s the only day when there’s a built-in excuse for doing cheesy sh*t for your partner. (Her words – not mine!) Before they can count down ("'Blockbuster' on three!"), jaded employee Eliza (Melissa Fumero) pauses to point out the irony of a once-monopolizing video store chain that put mom-and-pop stores out of business now being positioned as an underdog. It's an apt footnote and a rare moment of self-awareness for a series that, despite being quite funny, often has trouble reconciling the odd space it takes up in a late capitalist world.
There is, for example, the inherent contradiction of the show's own premise. "Blockbuster" sets itself up as a series that's all about the scrappy fight to keep physical media alive, but it's streaming exclusively on Netflix, the company that was,...

J.B. Smoove was a rather late addition to the "Curb Your Enthusiasm" cast. He joined the show in its sixth season in 2007, by which time it was already a well-established hit with copious Emmy nominations. When he went in for his audition, Smoove had to make an impression, and he did it in a way that is probably not advisable outside a controlled improv setting.
The threat of physical violence — specifically, a slap to creator and star Larry David's face in a comedy context — is what landed Smoove his role as Leon Black opposite David's fictionalized self on "Curb Your Enthusiasm." Smoove related the story of his audition in an oral history of the show via The Hollywood Reporter, where he said:
"I go in there as Leon. They said, 'Ok, J.B., you're going to improv with Larry directly.' And I had no idea I was going...

Streaming platform Roku has officially picked up its first Emmy Awards nominations.
The company’s free, ad-supported Roku Channel was recognized with two Emmy nods for rom-com movie “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas” — for television movie and choreography for scripted programming — while Bill Burr landed a nomination for actor in a short-form comedy or drama series for comedy anthology series “Immoral Compass.”
Roku picked up the streaming rights to “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas” from Lionsgate, after NBC canceled primetime musical comedy series “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” after two seasons. And “Immoral Compass” was originally set at Quibi, the defunct mobile streaming service whose assets Roku snapped up in January 2021 for under 100 million.
While both projects were rescues, the Roku Channel’s Emmy nominations are a feather in its cap as the company vies for attention and competes against larger streamers with multibillion-dollar budgets.
