The recent death of Angela Lansbury reminded me of the first time I was in the great lady’s presence. Every year during the annual Tony Awards ceremony, a large squad of press professionals hunker down in rooms situated near the event’s location to report for media outlets all over the world.
Back in 1999, I was in a Tony Awards press room, covering the show for our weekly TV series, “Theater Talk.” That year the rooms were over a small French restaurant across the street from the Gershwin Theatre, where the awards ceremony was being held, because its normal venue, Radio City Music Hall, was under renovation. During the ceremony, new Tony recipients would walk across the street, usually accompanied by their publicists, to be interviewed. In between the winners’ appearances, other celebrities who were also participants in the broadcast appeared for interviews, as well.

Cults are a difficult subject to broach, because there are a lot of factors to take into consideration. Who is at the center of the cult? What type of people does this organization seek out? How is the cultural landscape at the time? It's questions like these that have oversimplified the case of Charles Manson and his followers for decades –- the hard truth is that there is no simple answer to explain how he was able to convince his followers to kill innocent people. It's a combination of class politics, racism, fandom, and perhaps several other factors that we may never know about.
So, how in the world does Angela Lansbury, who recently passed away at 96 years old, fit into this equation? How can someone so nice catch the ire of the infamous cult leader? Well, according to a 2014 interview with The Daily Mail, it was because her children,...

Angela Lansbury, the beloved Tony-winning star of “Murder, She Wrote,” and “Beauty and the Beast,” who passed away on Tuesday, was wise enough to whisk daughter Deidre Shaw away from cult leader Charles Manson before the infamous 1969 murders committed by his followers.
In 2014, Lansbury told the Daily Mail, “It pains me to say it but, at one stage, Deidre was in with a crowd led by Charles Manson.” She recalled that Deidre and her son Anthony found Manson “charismatic” and were “fascinated” by him.
Once she realized hard drugs were involved, she made the decision to move the whole family from Los Angeles to Ireland where they wouldn’t be exposed to all the “bad influences” of Hollywood. “I said to Peter, ‘We have to leave,'” she said of her late husband Peter Shaw, who died in 2003.

Angela Lansbury, who has died aged 96, once had to step in after her daughter fell in with Charles Manson.
The Murder, She Wrote actor revealed in an interview that, while based in LA, her daughter Dierdre fell in with a crowd that was led by the cult leader.
In 1969, Manson orchestrated a string of killings that were carried out by his “family” of young followers.
Manson ordered his followers to kill nine people, including actress Sharon Tate, who was pregnant at the time.
Speaking to MailOnline in 2014, Beauty and the Beast voice star Lansbury said that her daughter, who is now 69, was “fascinated” by Manson.
“There were factions up in the hills above Malibu that were dedicated to deadly pursuit,” Lansbury said, adding: “It pains me to say it but, at one stage, Deidre was in with a crowd led by Charles Manson.”

The sad news of the death of Angela Lansbury, just a few days shy of her 97th birthday, brought to an end one of the longest and most storied careers in Hollywood history. While she will perhaps be best remembered for the 265 episodes (and four feature-length movies) she spent playing best-selling mystery writer Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote, a stint that earned her a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “most prolific amateur sleuth”, Lansbury packed her eight decades on stage and screen with a host of memorable roles. To each of them, she brought a whimsical humour and gentle warmth which could sometimes mask her deceptively sharp wit.
Born on 16 October 1925 in Regent’s Park, London, Lansbury left Britain with her family after the onset of the blitz in 1940. Her mother, the Belfast-born actor Moyna Macgill, moved Lansbury and her brothers Bruce and Edgar to New York,...

Angela Lansbury passed away on Tuesday (11 October) aged 96, her family announced.
While the renowned actor will be remembered by most as mystery writer Jessica Fletcher from the CBS hit series Murder, She Wrote, she also played a starring role as the supercilious Aunt Adelaide in 2005’s Nanny McPhee.
The family favourite film starring Emma Thompson as the eponymous, magical childminder played an important role in Lansbury’s life.
In a 2013 interview with The Guardian, Lansbury credited the film and Thompson with helping her recover from the 2003 death of her husband, actor/producer Peter Shaw.
“Nanny McPhee pulled me out of the abyss. I love Emma [Thompson]. She has an enormous heart,” she said.
Thompson recalled offering Lansbury the role in a speech at the 2013 Governors Awards in Los Angeles.
“Don’t be ridiculous, that’s like asking for a slice of the moon to be delivered,” Thompson remembered when Lansbury was first pitched for the role.

Lansbury is best known for her twelve season, 264 episode run as author / crime solver Jessica Fletcher on the mystery series Murder, She Wrote – a role she went on to reprise in four made-for-tv movies. Angela Lansbury has died at the age of 96.
An Oscar and Tony award-winning actress, the role she’s most famous for playing is Jessica Fletcher, the amateur sleuth at the centre of the long-running US television series Murder, She Wrote.
The crime drama aired for 12 seasons, which included 256 episodes and four feature films. Lansbury was nearly 60 years old when she was cast as a retired English teacher who takes up mystery writing in her early widowhood.
But the iconic role, which went on to define a large portion of Lansbury’s career, nearly went to another actor.
In a 2015 interview with the Television Academy, All in the Family star Jean Stapleton, who played Edith Bunker in the seminal American sitcom, revealed she was offered the role first.
“Angela will attest to that as well,” Stapleton told her interviewer of the revelation. “Every time I saw Angela in those years, she’d say,...

After 40 years, the British-born actress who conquered Hollywood and starred in TV's Murder, She Wrote is back on the West End stage. As she approaches her 90s, she's in her theatrical prime
In the play Blithe Spirit, the wildly eccentric and chaotic clairvoyant Madame Arcati, Noël Coward's most colourful creation, announces that "time is the reef upon which all our frail mystic ships are wrecked".
No aphorism has ever applied less than this does to the actress now about to don the headscarves and bangles to play Arcati in the West End at the age of 88. Dame Angela Lansbury, ennobled earlier this month, has defied the laws of nature by becoming more theatrically prolific as her years have advanced. In 2007, she was Tony award-nominated for her role in a new Terrence McNally play, Deuce, on Broadway; in 2010, she was nominated again for a revival of Sondheim's A Little Night Music; and then,...

Visiting the UK in tribute to her Labour leader grandfather, the Murder, She Wrote star reveals hope of capping her Hollywood career by appearing on the West End stage her mother once performed on
One of Britain's brightest and most durable stars of stage and screen, Angela Lansbury, is hoping to round off her Hollywood and Broadway career with a theatrical run on the West End stage where her mother performed.
"I really would love to play the Theatre Royal Haymarket, because that is where my mother played," she said. "It nearly happened last year, and if that venue could be guaranteed I would come. I only want someone to make the offer."
Lansbury, 85, is due to return to her native Britain next week to celebrate the life of her grandfather, George Lansbury, a founder of the Labour party. On the eve of her visit, she talked to the Observer about her English heritage,...

Playing the daughter to Angela Lansbury's ancient mother, the Hollywood star is unconvincing as a rejected lover
Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, directed by Trevor Nunn and the biggest opening in New York this season, is a tough gig for a Broadway debut, even for a movie star who won an Oscar for Chicago. With its complex score and no conventional showstoppers, it requires the skills of a seasoned stage actor. And while Catherine Zeta-Jones can act and sing, she can't do both at once in this production – at least not in one take.
The show is a musical interpretation of Ingmar Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night, a tangle of love affairs and mistaken intentions set in Sweden at the turn of the last century. It is also a study of self-consciousness, which sadly for its star is not the same thing as being self-conscious.

Actress Angela Lansbury fears drugs would have killed her children had a devastating domestic fire not forced the family to relocate to Ireland.
The Murder, She Wrote star and her late husband Peter Shaw endured "a terrible time" after an inferno destroyed their much-treasured California abode in the late 1960s.
Adding to their woes were children Deirdre and Anthony, who had succumbed to the temptations of narcotics and were spiralling toward an untimely death.
In a bid to consign their bad luck firmly to the past, the family uprooted to Ireland - and Lansbury is convinced the bold decision saved her kids' lives.
She says, "When my house burned down, it was a terrible time. We lost everything. But I also helped change our lives. Our children were on drugs - their friends were overdosing and dying, and the outlook was very bad.
"After the fire, with nothing to stay for, we moved to Ireland. So some good came of it. I don't think my children would have survived if we hadn't moved away from temptation."...
