By now, fans of Dua Lipa know that her new album is psychedelia-inspired with contributions from Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the pop star dug deeper into the influences of her upcoming third studio LP, including the UK acts Primal Scream and Massive Attack.
In the profile, Rs staff writer Brittany Spanos reports that Lipa described the album as a “psychedelic-pop-infused tribute to UK rave culture” drawing heavy inspiration from Primal Scream and Massive Attack. Lipa named Primal Scream’s 1991 breakout album, Screamadelica, as a particular influence.

Chvrches’ Lauren Mayberry has performed her very first solo show, featuring a nine-song setlist that included new, unreleased tunes and a cover of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.” Check out the full setlist and watch videos of the performance below.
The show took place on Monday, September 4th, at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, and marked the first live performance from Mayberry since she announced earlier this year that she would begin releasing solo music. Joined by a three-piece band, her new songs came to life with floral stage decorations, high-energy arrangements, and plenty of space for her bright, clear voice to carry the melodies.
Some songs, like the opener “Bird,” had a driving feel, with ’80s-pop-esque instrumentation. Others, like the closing number “Sorry, Etc.” had a harder, punk-ish feel, with Mayberry shout-singing “I’m sorry, et cetera” on repeat. The Madonna cover came near the end of the set,...

Lauren Mayberry, frontwoman of Chvrches, has released her debut solo single, “Are You Awake?” The piano-driven ballad was written with Tobias Jesso Jr. and Matthew Koma, who also produced the song.
The track came about after a writing session between Mayberry and Jesso Jr. “I was thinking a lot about loneliness and homesickness, and as soon as Tobias started playing the chords, the lyrics and melody came to me really quickly,” Mayberry said in a statement. “I finished the song with my friend Matthew Koma, who really understood what I was trying to say.

Lauren Mayberry of Chvrches has unveiled her first solo single “Are You Awake?”
The Scottish singer-songwriter co-wrote the melancholic ballad with reigning Grammy Songwriter of the Year Tobias Jesso Jr. as well as pop-punk artist Matthew Koma, who added finishing touches to the delicate arrangement.
In a video prefacing the song’s release, Mayberry shared that “Are You Awake?” was a “happy accident” and fittingly came together on “a grey, rainy afternoon in December” when she was feeling “pretty homesick and missing everyone.” Luckily, she found a kindred spirit in native Canadian Jesso Jr as “people who are not from America living in America.” Stream the single below.
Mayberry is set to embark on her first solo headlining trek in September, along with support dates for The Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie’s joint tour. Check for tickets to all of her upcoming shows via here,

Unlike other big award shows, the top Grammy categories are devoid of a reliable precursor like how the SAG Awards called all of the acting categories for this year’s Oscars. But one indicator that many pundits look out for at the Grammys themselves is a nomination or win for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical: 11 out of the last 12 Engineered winners also took home a Grammy in their genre album category. And in the past 12 years, seven of the winners have also been nominated in Album of the Year, and five of those seven went on to win that category. This year’s Album of the Year winner, “Harry’s House” by Harry Styles, indeed took home Best Engineered Album. But checking out what else “Harry’s House” won, there might be a new category that also can give us a hint: the just-instituted Songwriter of the Year.

Este Haim, arguably the most demonstrative member of the sister-trio Haim on stage, has really been demonstrating behind the scenes what she’s musically capable of, with her move into TV and film scoring. She’s being joined in that crossover by her newfound collaborator in composing for the screen, Christopher Stracey, who is one-half of the Australian dance-music duo Bag Raiders, and, as a (primarily) electronic musician and producer, has worked with or remixed artists including Ellie Goulding, Maroon 5, Orville Peck, Conan Grey and many others.
They came together through a mutual friend who “set up a playdate” to see how they’d get along in possibly co-scoring the award-winning Netflix limited series “Maid.” That pandemic-era partnership went swimmingly, and they went on to pair up a second time for director Cooper Raiff’s “Cha Cha Real Smooth,” a top Sundance Film Festival winner before going on to open...

“When I got the call — or the ask at least — to compose for ‘Maid,’ I’m self-aware enough to know where my strengths and weaknesses are, and I knew that I needed a collaborator to help me on this composing journey,” says Este Haim about the opportunity to create the score for the Netflix limited series. This was her first composing gig for film or TV, so she reached out to her friend Tobias Jesso Jr., a Canadian recording artist, who connected her with another musician and first-time TV composer, Australian Chris Stracey. “If Tobias loved Stray, I knew I was going to love Stray.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Haim and Stracey above.

A new album from Adele has arrived.
The British singer released her anticipated fourth album 30, which she has described as her “ride or die throughout the most turbulent period of my life.”
For 30, which was delayed due to the pandemic, the Grammy-winning singer reunites with 25 co-writers and producers Greg Kurstin, Max Martin, Tobias Jesso Jr. and Shellback, with Oscar-winning Black Panther composer Ludwig Göransson among album collaborators.
The new release follows the singer’s divorce from Simon Konecki — with whom she shares her 9-year-old son Angelo — and centers on the aftermath and moving on throughout the 12 songs.

Adele candidly explained the stories behind her highly anticipated fourth album 30 in the December cover story for Rolling Stone. Her first album in six years will be released on Nov. 19.
In the new interview, the Grammy and Oscar-winning singer-songwriter revealed that much of the album is an open letter to her son Angelo, specifically so that he has a better understanding of who his mother was during the period of her life that surrounded her separation from her husband Simon Konecki. She began writing in early 2019, as her marriage was dissolving,...

Jimmy Kimmel happens to be next-door neighbors with Dakota Johnson, which is pretty convenient for a talk show host who can’t come within six feet of his guest.
To play it safe, the movie star, who stars in the upcoming film “The High Note” (read TheWrap’s review here), chatted with Kimmel from at least 12 feet away on the other side of her backyard fence.
Kimmel asked Johnson about the other neighbors she’s had in her life, seeing as the “50 Shades of Grey” star grew up next-door to Hunter S. Thompson, who was a friend of her father, actor Don Johnson. She remembers the “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” author bringing her strange gifts like fishing rods, goggles, and bird collars.

The theme of Haim's music video for "Hallelujah" can only be described as "an aloof crew of magicians performing magic tricks in gorgeous silk shift dresses," and honestly? I'm here for it.
The trio - sisters Alana, Danielle, and Este Haim - belt out the somber tune in the video directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, which takes place on the stage of a theater in Los Angeles. "Why me, how'd I get this Hallelujah?" the band asks as they float in mid-air and manage to send chairs flying across the stage. "I had a best friend but she has come to pass / One I wish I could see now / You always remind me that memories will last / These arms reach out."
Watch the poignant video for the new track above, which was co-written with Tobias Jesso Jr., who's also worked with Adele, Sia, and Florence and the Machine. I...

Haim have released a new song “Hallelujah,” and no, it’s not a Leonard Cohen cover. The sister trio dropped the song accompanied by a video directed by their frequent collaborator, Paul Thomas Anderson.
The stripped-down track was co-written by Tobias Jesso Jr. and produced by Ariel Rechtshaid, Rostam Batmanglij and Danielle Haim. The video opens with Danielle alone on a dark stage, playing acoustic guitar. “I met two angels but they were in disguise,” she sings, before she tosses a chair to Este, who takes over on lead vocals.

When Adele Was Young, She Was Just Cute Little Toothless Adele Adkins, As Seen on Her New Single Art
Adele wasn't always Adele, world-dominating, foulmouthed diva. (Okay, she probably always swore.) Once upon a time, she was just widdle Adele Laurie Blue Adkins from Tottenham, brought up by the River Lea. And in all her hometown glory, she, too, went through a phase where all she wanted for Christmas was her two front teeth. Just look at her! On Friday, Adele officially released the Tobias Jesso Jr.–penned "When We Were Young" as 25's second single, sharing with it the most adorable, toothless photo of Yung Adele you've ever seen:And if you happen to take a casual stroll 'round London, you might even come face to face with baby Adele. Just like you always wanted! What's more is, even though the live version of "When We Were Young" has been out since before the album, you can finally stream the official version. You know, just in case you're one...

Pop music has been looking toward indie music with increasing regularity for its songwriters: Tame Impala's Kevin Parker helped out Mark Ronson on this year's Uptown Special; Chairlift's Caroline Polachek was tapped for Beyoncé’s “No Angel"; at one point Grimes was writing songs for Rihanna. Tobias Jesso Jr., the 30-year-old Canadian indie balladeer behind what Adele called her favorite song she's ever written during her Radio City concert earlier this week (“When We Were Young”), is just the latest example. Jesso Jr. claims to be militantly uncool. Upon the release of his debut Goon earlier this year, he garnered comparisons to '70s songwriting greats like Harry Nilsson and Randy Newman, both considered de rigueur reference points for a certain class of indie rock in recent years. But Jesso Jr. wasn't thinking of those folks when he was making his album, as he was instead influenced by Paul McCartney...

In a new 60 Minutes Australia promo, Adele sings "When We Were Young," a collaboration with singer/songwriter Tobias Jesso Jr. for her upcoming album 25, and to be honest, it's all right. Just kidding! It's so goddamn good, Adele has to point a diva finger to Heaven when she belts out those high notes. This one's for you, Heaven! Your grandma, Abraham Lincoln, and Bea Arthur are currently all sitting around, sobbing over how good this song is. And now you can watch her full performance above, in all its heavenly glory.

Adele can do no wrong. The British singer's full live performance of "When We Were Young" premiered Tuesday. Paul Dugdale directed the video, which was taped at The Church Studios in London, where some of the tracks for her third album, 25, were recorded. Adele co-wrote the song with Tobias Jesso Jr. Adele teased the performance Monday in a promo for her upcoming interview with Australia's 60 Minutes. Speaking to SiriusXM Monday, Adele said the song was about attending a house party when you were older and "seeing everyone that you've ever fallen out with, everyone that you've ever loved, everyone that you've never loved, and stuff like that. And where you can't find the time to be...
