Gold Gala is the type of weekend where you can share an intimate booth at L.A. culinary hotspot Yangban with a Pulitzer winner (journalist Jose Antonio Vargas) and a top festival exec (TIFF chief programming officer Anita Lee) on Friday night and then mimosas and a sound bath at the Four Seasons the next morning with an Olympic figure skater and a former Miss Universe (Madison Chock and R’Bonney Gabriel, respectively) – all as part of mere pre-gaming to the titular main event, which took place at the Music Center in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday night.
Ostensibly a cultural celebration and awards dinner from Asian Pacific power broker network Gold House, the third annual Gold Gala was simultaneously an haute couture showcase (fashion designer Prabal Gurung served as its creative director) and a family reunion, with 600 Api talent and leaders from across multiple industries turning out in their finest “heritage black tie,...

KollywoodFrom 'Sigappu Rojakkal' to 'Psycho', here's a list of serial killer films which have made a splash in Tamil cinema.Sowmya RajendranKeerthy Suresh's Penguin is up for release on June 19. Directed by Eashvar Karthic and produced by Karthik Subbaraj's Stone Bench Films, the promos so far have suggested a disturbing thriller about a serial killer. Within thrillers, serial killers have not been a popular sub-genre in Tamil cinema. It could be that these films -- which are likely to be violent and gory -- were thought to be unsuitable for the family audience, and would therefore not attract enough footfalls in theatres. In recent times, however, quite a few of these films have been made. The 1967 film Athey Kangal is often credited to be the first serial killer film in Tamil cinema. However, though the film revolves around multiple murders, the motive is revealed to be revenge.

KollywoodWhile the first 'Uriyadi' was original and intense, the second film falls back on too many cliches.Sowmya RajendranYouTube screenshot Vijay Kumar's Uriyadi, which came out in 2016, caught the audience by surprise. Here was a debut director, who had also cast himself in the lead, and made an experimental film in a genre that's difficult to crack. Uriyadi was about four college students who are sucked into the political warfare around them. The film looked and felt new, with unexpected humour and twists in the plot. Uriyadi 2 comes three years later and while Vijay Kumar has retained his name from the first film - Lenin Vijay - and says he studied in Vrdh, the same college where the last film was set, Uriyadi 2 is about a new set of characters. This is a different story but there are plenty of echoes from the first film, including the soundtrack.

KollywoodThe 2016 film 'Uriyadi' was hailed as Tamil cinema's finest political thriller, and the second film will hit the screens this Friday.Anjana ShekarDirector Vijay Kumar is apologetic when we finally get him over the phone after a missed call and a short wait later. “Sorry, I nodded off. I've barely got any sleep in these past few days,” he says, a note of fatigue in his voice. And for someone who distances himself from the spotlight the minute the curtains come down, the past few weeks have been a whirlwind, he admits. “I usually stay away from the industry when I’m not working. I feel it eats into my time that could otherwise be spent on work,” - confessions of a workaholic? Perhaps this explains why we saw or heard very little of him since his first film in 2016. But Vijay Kumar tells us that soon after the film’s release,...

You’d think, with their potential, they have the chances to become someone memorable. You see a young actor on screen, playing the role of the main lead’s friend or sister or brother, and you’d think to yourself that you might possibly get to see more of them in future. People who listened to Ar Rahman’s Roja in 1992 probably thought that the young and new music director had “a very bright future”. You get our drift?
