Prolific producer and director Shawn Levy fell in love with “All the Light We Cannot See” long before he was attached to adapt the 2014 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Anthony Doerr into a new Netflix limited series, out Thursday, November 2. “I did not read it as a filmmaker. I read it as a reader,” he said to IndieWire over Zoom. “By the time I got back from whatever holiday I was on where I read that book, the rights were already unavailable, having been snatched up by Scott Rudin and Fox Searchlight.”
The story of a blind French teenager Marie-Laure and German soldier Werner connecting via radio, providing each other salvation under the devastation of WWII, caught Levy right as he’d made the deliberate decision to take a step back from directing films, and focus on producing. “I had, at that point, directed maybe like nine movies in 11 or 12 years.

The tale of the young, star-crossed lovers known as "Romeo & Juliet" has been told and retold for centuries, but Hulu and 20th Century Studios have a whole new perspective to bring to the table. In a comedic twist on William Shakespeare's classic romantic tragedy, the tale of "Romeo & Juliet" is being retold through the lens of Rosaline, the gal Romeo was exclusively dating before he ran into Juliet at a party and completely turned his entire life (and family) upside down. Rosaline is devastated when she learns that her boyfriend has left her for someone new, and goes on a mission to break the two of them up and win back the man of her dreams.
"Rosaline" looks to be taking the anachronistic approach of Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet" and inverting it, with classic period garb and set dressings injected with contemporary language and sensibilities.

Everyone knows the story of Romeo and Juliet, but what about Romeo’s spurned lover, Rosaline? She’s been pushed to the side and forgotten about…until now. The new trailer for 20th Century Studios’ Rosaline tells the story of Romeo and Juliet from Rosaline’s point of view.
The trailer shows poor Rosaline is upset that her boyfriend is using the same lovely words to woo Juliet that he used on her just three days prior. Rosaline’s the one who’s supposed to be Romeo’s great love and future wife, yet Romeo doesn’t seem to care one iota that he’s so easily replaced her with her very own cousin. Damn the man.
Emmy Award nominee Kaitlyn Dever (Dopesick) stars as the titular character and serves as an executive producer. The cast also includes Sean Teale (Little Voice) as Dario, Minnie Driver (Speechless) as The Nurse,...

Netflix has acquired Corey Mead’s true crime article “The Poet” for a feature film adaptation, the company announced on Wednesday. “The Poet” was originally published by Greg Nichols and Matthew Pearl’s Truly*Adventurous banner.
Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen from 21 Laps will produce alongside Pouya Shahbazian. Truly*Adventurous’ Nichols and Pearl will executive produce, with Becca Edelman overseeing for 21 Laps.
“The Poet” is a true story with shades of “Gone Girl” and “The Gift” that has been told in full for the first time based on hundreds of pages of never-before-seen documents and newly discovered sources. The longform article tells the story of Ruth Finley, who escaped a murderer as a teen, only to find herself on the run again decades later as the killer terrorizes her hometown. With a team of police investigators and her devoted husband intent on saving her, the identity of her tormentor is too chilling to believe.

Exclusive: In a bidding battle between multiple studios, Fox 2000 and 21 Laps have acquired feature rights to Mothers, Lock Up Your Daughters Because They Are Terrifying, an elevated horror short story written by Alice Sola Kim. The story was published in Tin House Magazine in October. I heard there were five offers as this became the latest in a pre-holiday flourish of material deals before the town shuts down for the holidays.
Mothers is the story of three girls, born in South Korea and adopted by American families, who feel isolated within their adopted families and their suburban hometown. When they discover a spell that summons the spirit of their Korean “mother,” it at first seems a dream come true. But darkness lies beneath, and this spirit may be more demon than savior.

Already, music from the high school-set sci-fi musical has generated an unprecedented amount of song streams.
Watch a couple samples from the Off Broadway production below.
I’m told that many producers chased this one over the past couple of days. Among the producers I’ve heard were Color Force’s Nina Jacobson, Imagine Entertainment, Michael De Luca, Marty Bowen’s Temple Hill, Scooter Braun, Jennifer Todd and Bob Zemeckis’ ImageMovers. Next step will be to enlist a studio. Both 21 Laps and Berlanti have their first look deals with Fox.
