With less than a week to go in final voting for the 75th Emmy Awards, the strike postponed ceremony risks getting lost in an award show pileup next year.
Moved to January 15, 2024 as the WGA and SAG-AFTRA labor actions brought Hollywood to a halt, the Emmys now fall right in the middle of Golden Globes, the Critics’ Choice Awards, SAG and PGA nominations and the Oscar nominations, to name but a few. It’s an unprecedented and messy situation.
That’s our prime topic today on TV Talk, along with some shifting predictions in the Drama, Comedy, Limited or Anthology and TV Movie categories. Take a listen to Deadline TV Critic Dominic Patten and Deadline Chief Film Critic and Awards Columnist Pete Hammond:

Not saying a midlife crisis and cherry red sportscars are in the mix, yet. However, besides the ever-tightening economic constrictions girdling the industry, the past 12 months has witnessed a maturation of narrative that enhanced even Star Wars, Marvel and DC Comics offerings.

Contradicting Alec Baldwin’s prior claims, the FBI forensic report on the Rust fatal shooting case claims that the gun used in the accident could not have been fired without pulling the trigger.
Baldwin, the film’s producer and lead actor, shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set last year. He said he believed he was handling a “cold gun” without live ammunition. However, when the gun fired, a live bullet struck Hutchins, killing her. The film’s director, Joel Souza, was also wounded in the shooting.
The FBI’s accidental discharge testing determined that .45 Colt (.45 Long Colt) caliber F.lli Pietta single-action revolver needed a trigger pull to fire.
With the hammer in the quarter- and half-cock positions, the gun “could not be made to fire without a pull of the trigger,” the report stated.
It added that the gun could not detonate “without a pull of the trigger...

“We actually have the answers,” jokes Pete Hammond on what needs to be repaired by the TV Academy in today’s TV Talk podcast. “We want to talk about what we would do fix some of these egregious problems here,” Deadline’s Awards columnist adds.
Well, perhaps Pete half jokes.
Seriously, take a listen here at what the near in-full agreement Hammond and Deadline’s Senior Editor/Chief TV Critic Dominic Patten have to say in their audio memo to the group behind the Emmys – and be warned, we poke some bears and categories:
As you can hear above, we ask Last Night Tonight with John Oliver and its esteemed host to join us in our crusade to recategorize the Emmys, and more. Not saying Succession, but kind of saying Succession, if you know what we mean?
Also, in today’s podcast Pete chats with Adrien Brody.

The New Mexico set of the indie Western Rust, where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed Thursday by a prop gun “discharged” by star Alec Baldwin, had been having a myriad of issues, including problems related to safety, before the accident, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation. That included at least one previous incident involving a misfiring of a weapon that was used days before in a scene.
“A gun had two misfires in a closed cabin,” a source told Deadline. “They just fired loud pops – a person was just holding it in their hands and it went off.”
Just hours before the fatal Thursday accident, in which Hutchins and director Joel Souza were shot, seven of the film’s camera crew packed up their personal gear and walked off the job, citing a wide range of complaints. Several of those who quit wrote letters of resignation.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about Sunday night’s season finale of Lovecraft Country.
Ever since Misha Green unleashed the wonder that is Lovecraft Country to the world in August, she, along with an all-star roster of writers and directors has immersed us in the Lccu: The Lovecraft Country Cinematic Universe. The series played out like an anthology of sorts that connect to create a 10-hour movie. The focus of Election Night will be on the swing states, the key battlegrounds that will decide who will be the next president. But other states, like Alabama and Massachusetts, will be red vs. blue polar opposites, so different in their thinking about Donald Trump and Joe Biden that it’ll make many wonder, how are we in the same country?
In his new book Overstated: A Coast-to-Coast Roast of the 50 States, comedian Colin Quinn describes the current state of the union as akin to a couples counseling session. He talks to the Deadline Podcast about his inspiration and his travels, and offers his take on whether the rifts in the country can be mended no matter who wins.
Senior editor Dominic Patten and political editor Ted Johnson also talk about the dueling Biden-Trump town halls, and why skipping a presidential debate may have been a missed opportunity for the Trump campaign.

In the weeks since Kanye West announced that he was really and truly running for president, political reporters have approached his potential candidacy with a bit of caution — not just because he would be a long shot who already missed deadlines, but also over calls by his wife Kim Kardashian for “compassion” over his mental health.
This week, a number of outlets have reported that GOP operatives have been assisting West in his efforts to get on the ballot in states like Wisconsin and Ohio, two states where polls show Donald Trump and Joe Biden are in a tight race.
In an interview with Forbes today, West did not deny that he was a “spoiler,” given that he does not have a shot at reaching 270 electoral votes. Asked by Forbes’ Randall Lane whether he was serving as a spoiler, West replied via text, “I’m not going to argue with you.

San Diego Comic-Con’s first-ever Comic-Con@Home comes to a close Sunday, ending a five-day lineup of almost entirely prerecorded virtual panels.
San Diego Comic-Con 2020 was canceled in April due to the coronavirus pandemic, marking the first time the annual pop culture event won’t happen as planned in its 50-year history. The online convention, dubbed Comic-Con@Home, will take place July 22-26, the same time span during which San Diego Comic-Con would have been held. Between 300 and 400 virtual panels are planned for the event.

Kurtzman also updated fans on the progress of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, arguably the most exciting franchise addition for long-time fans.

Exclusive: She’s Gotta Have It Netflix series actress Margot Bingham has joined season 11 of AMC’s The Walking Dead.
While the network nor sources won’t comment on who Bingham will play, odds are that we’ll finally see Bingham as Stephanie, a character she’s done the voiceover for in the season 10 episodes “Bonds” and “Morning Star”. Stephanie is an enigmatic survivor of the zombie outbreak in Charleston, West Virginia, who connects via radio with Josh McDermitt’s Eugene Porter.
When Deadline’s Dominic Patten spoke with Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang for the last episode that aired on April 5, she indicated that the series will go from being set in its usual rural backdrop to more urban environments. The series was unable to air the season 10 finale due to complications of Covid-19, but managed to finish post-production with an air date during Q4.

You can tell when its Emmy season because that also means the return of Deadline’s TV Talk Podcast, featuring TV critic Dominic Patten and awards columnist Pete Hammond. For the 2020 premiere episode, we hit numerous topics related to the changing landscape of this unique Emmy campaign year as we cover the waterfront, as it were, in discussing just how the coronavirus pandemic — and the changes it has required — will directly affect the nominations, and possibly the actual winners of television’s highest award.
Listen here:
Also discussed: Could the fact that the majority of the 25,000 or so Emmy voters are stuck at home mean people are actually watching more contenders than ever, and will that also portend some fresh nominees this year? Unlike other awards, such as the Tonys and potentially the Oscars, both taking direct hits on the content they normally vote on, the Emmys aren’t going to miss a beat.
