Disney Plus has announced the films and filmmakers for Disney Studios Content’s second season of “Launchpad,” a collection of live-action short films.
Selected out of almost 2,000 applicants, all from underrepresented backgrounds, the lineup of filmmakers features six writers, five directors and one writer-director (Niki Ang). Their six short films, based on the theme “connection,” will debut on the streaming service in 2023.
After the successful debut of the pipeline program last year, the Disney team strived to up the ante with year two. Disney senior manager Phillip Domfeh, who runs the initiative’s second season, tells Variety that the team asked themselves, “How do we grow and expand impact? And how do we continue to take our program to the next level?”
The pipeline program therefore added a writing track, which allowed both directors and writers to apply, while the first season was geared solely toward multi-hyphenate filmmakers.

Update, November 23: NewFilmmakers Los Angeles has announced the recipient of its inaugural NewNarratives grant, a program supported by WarnerMedia’s OneFifty division created to support and develop emerging global storytellers. Filmmaker Jim Vendiola will receive $40,000 for the development of his feature “Argus,” about a disaffected private eye who is hired to reinvestigate the case of a missing teen long thought to have run away. It shifts points of view between the detective, an obsessive killer, and the pre-abduction life of the victim and is described by Nfmla as a “subversive, Bipoc, female-driven reimagining of 1970s Neo-noirs.”
The Chicago-based Vendiola, a first-generation Filipino-American, is a writer, director, and development exec who has thrice been a Newcity Film 50 honoree. He’s also a Nfmla alum

The question of work — who gets it and who doesn’t — has driven the Hollywood zeitgeist for years, from #MeToo to recent reckonings over race and equity. At the Tribeca Festival in New York City on Wednesday, Emmy winner Lena Waithe, her production company Hillman Grad and an unexpected financial partner, the global Hr conglomerate Indeed, took a step toward innovating new ways of affording work in Hollywood.
Waithe, alongside Hillman Grad’s president of film and television Rishi Rajani, presented “Rising Voices,” a collection of 10 films written and directed by up-and-coming Bipoc filmmakers. Given $1 million by Indeed, Waithe, as well as executives from Ventureland and 271 Films, tasked the filmmakers with producing 15-minute shorts in a few weeks’ time.
“We’re seeing real inclusion at work, and we’re seeing people put their money where their mouths are,” Waithe told Variety at the festival. “Hollywood is starting to wake...

Lena Waithe’s Hillman Grad Productions and Indeed have teamed up to spotlight 10 Black, Indigenous and people of color (Bipoc) filmmaker teams, debuting each of their films at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.
Under the companies’ “Rising Voices” partnership, the filmmakers have been awarded a $100,000 production budget and crew (via Hillman Grad and 271 Films) to produce a 15-minute short film.
“Whenever I talk to up and coming filmmakers they always tell me finding money is the biggest hurdle they face. That’s why I’m so grateful to Indeed: Rising Voices, for helping us give ten filmmakers both money to make their films and mentorship while they do it,” Waithe, Hillman Grad’s CEO, said in a statement announcing the selections.

Marvel is producing another fictional podcast in a partnership with Stitcher called Marvels. Marvel and Stitcher have already produced two podcasts called Wolverine: The Long Night and Wolverine: The Lost Trail. Both of those tell great stories and I’m looking forward to seeing how this new one turns out. It sounds like it’ll make for a great podcast series!
The series is part of the “celebration marking the 25th anniversary of Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross’ award-winning four-part comic book ‘Marvels,’ which was released to critical acclaim in 1994. Based on ‘Marvels,’ this podcast revisits the story of photojournalist, Phil Sheldon, as he navigates through the chaos caused by the Galactus invasion of New York City and explores what it means to be human in a universe inhabited by Super Heroes.”
